To perform the whip attack, aim Rose’s Arcana Whip at an enemy, activate the grapple, then press the normal attack button while Rose is still being pulled toward the target. The reliable cue is just before the whip reaches the enemy. Pressing after Rose arrives is too late, so the attack must be queued during the approach.

What the whip attack is—and what it is not
Belmont’s Curse uses the whip for two related but different actions. A normal whip traversal swings Rose between hooks or anchor rings. That movement does not automatically damage an enemy. The attack version is a grapple chained into an attack while Rose is traveling toward an enemy.

Controls and button setup
The control scheme has a dedicated Arcana Whip grapple action and a separate normal attack input. The labels shown on screen depend on the platform, controller and any remapping you have applied. Open the game’s controls menu before practicing and identify both commands rather than relying on a generic label such as “whip.”
Confirm these two commands
- Find the input assigned to the Arcana Whip grapple.
- Find the ordinary attack input for Rose’s current weapon.
- Test each one independently in a safe area so you know which button starts the grapple and which button performs the follow-up attack.
Frame-rate differences can change how the timing feels. A button press that seems comfortably early at one frame rate may feel closer to contact at another, so judge the visual approach in your own setup instead of copying a fixed rhythm from a video.
Step-by-step: perform the grapple attack
- Choose an enemy target. Face a target that the whip can reach. An anchor or ring is useful for movement, but it will not produce the enemy-damaging grapple attack.
- Aim the Arcana Whip. Position the targeting direction over the enemy and activate the grapple input.
- Wait for the approach to begin. Rose should be pulled or fly toward the target. This moving phase is the attack window.
- Press normal attack just before contact. Use the moment when the whip is about to connect as your cue. The press should occur before Rose reaches the enemy.
- Let the animation resolve. If the input landed during the approach, the current weapon’s grapple attack plays. If Rose simply reaches the enemy without an attack, the press was probably late, aimed at a non-enemy anchor, or assigned to a different button than expected.
The NoobFeed guide gives the same practical instruction: hit the standard attack button “right before the whip actually connects with the enemy.” A community explanation describes the interval as pressing attack immediately after the whip button while Rose is traveling; it agrees that pressing after arrival misses the window, but it should be treated as corroboration rather than frame-accurate data.
How to read the timing window
The important distinction is not “before or after pressing grapple.” It is “during travel or after arrival.” Pressing attack immediately after the grapple can work when the target is close, but the safest general rule is to watch Rose’s movement and press shortly before contact.

- The whip launches toward the enemy.
- The grapple catches and begins pulling Rose.
- Rose is visibly moving through the air toward the target.
- The whip is nearly at the target and contact is imminent.
- Press attack during step 3 or, most reliably, at the end of step 3 just before step 4 finishes.
- Rose performs the weapon’s grapple attack instead of merely completing the movement.
PC Gamer characterizes the whip attack as having a lengthy wind-up and notes that the timing can feel early. That description explains why waiting for a visible hit or impact animation is unreliable: the input belongs in the approach, before the apparent point of impact.
No authoritative source in the available documentation publishes startup, recovery, contact or invulnerability frame counts. Do not treat a particular number of frames, milliseconds or controller taps as universal. Distance to the target, frame rate and your input device all affect the rhythm you perceive.
A practice method that makes the timing repeatable
A stationary enemy is the best training target because it removes most of the variables that make the window difficult to judge. You are learning the relationship between whip travel distance and the moment of the attack press, not trying to react to a moving opponent.

- Find a stationary enemy in an area where a missed grapple is not immediately fatal.
- Stand at a repeatable distance and keep the target near the center of your aim.
- Activate the grapple and watch the whip’s travel rather than Rose’s eventual arrival.
- Press attack just before the whip reaches the enemy.
- If the attack fails, move the press earlier on the next attempt. Do not wait longer.
- Repeat from a slightly different distance to learn how the approach changes.
- Once the timing is consistent, practice against a moving enemy and then during a real encounter.
Use the first successful hit as a visual reference. You are looking for the same pre-contact position each time, not for a memorized button interval. If you change frame-rate settings, display hardware or controller, recalibrate by repeating this exercise.

Why the grapple connects without attacking
A successful grapple does not prove that the attack input was accepted. Several distinct situations can produce a simple pull-in with no strike.
The attack was pressed after arrival
This is the most common timing error. Once Rose has reached the enemy, the airborne approach has ended and the follow-up window has closed. On the next attempt, press while Rose is still moving and bias the input earlier.
The target was an anchor or ring
Traversal points support movement, not the enemy-damaging grapple attack. Aim at an enemy when you want the strike. If you are swinging from a hook or ring, the normal traversal action is working as designed.

The grapple and normal attack are separate commands. Reopen the controls menu and verify the current binding, especially after changing controllers, presets or platform layouts. Test the attack button outside a grapple to confirm that it produces Rose’s ordinary attack.

The press was too late because you waited for a hit animation
The attack has a wind-up, and the visual impact occurs after the input window. Use the whip’s approach as the cue; do not wait for contact sparks, a damage reaction or Rose’s arrival.
The timing feel changed with frame rate
The controls guidance warns that frame-rate differences affect how the timing feels. If the same button rhythm worked previously but now misses, watch the approach on the current setup and retrain the press rather than assuming the control has stopped working.
The grapple did not target a valid enemy
Check that the whip actually latched to the intended enemy and that the target is within the grapple’s usable range. A missed or redirected grapple cannot be converted into the enemy attack.

The attack is most useful when the enemy’s position and the whip’s path are clear. It is not necessary to force the grapple attack every time the whip connects; traversal and combat are separate choices.
Practical timing adjustments
For a close target
The approach is short, so the attack input may need to follow the grapple almost immediately. Start watching for the first visible movement toward the enemy and press before the whip reaches it.
For a distant target
You have more travel time, but that does not mean you should wait for arrival. Track the whip and press as it nears the enemy. The correct moment is still pre-contact.
When the target moves
A moving enemy can change the distance after the grapple begins. Keep the attack press tied to the current visual approach, and be prepared for a miss if the enemy leaves the line. Practice on stationary targets before relying on this against fast movers.

If hazards or multiple enemies make the visual cue difficult to read, use a normal attack or reposition first. The grapple attack rewards deliberate timing; it is not safer simply because the whip has already connected.
What is known—and not known—about the exact frames
The available guides agree on the functional window: attack while Rose is flying or being pulled, immediately before contact. They do not provide authoritative numeric frame data. There is therefore no verified universal value for startup, recovery, contact timing or invulnerability frames to apply across platforms and frame-rate settings.
That limitation does not prevent reliable use. A visual, pre-contact cue is more portable than a fixed frame count because it adapts to target distance, display timing and the player’s current configuration.
Quick checklist before retrying
- Did I grapple an enemy rather than a hook or ring?
- Did Rose begin traveling toward the target?
- Did I press the normal attack button while she was still moving?
- Was the press just before whip contact, not after arrival?
- Are the grapple and attack buttons still mapped as expected?
- Has my frame-rate or display setup changed?
Once those checks are satisfied, repeat the maneuver on a stationary enemy and move the attack press earlier whenever the grapple connects without producing the strike.
