UPI payments in India can start in three different ways: scan a payee’s QR code, enter the recipient’s UPI ID (also called a VPA), or choose UPI during an online merchant checkout. In every route, your UPI app shows the payment details before authorization; check the recipient and amount, then use your UPI PIN only to approve a payment.
You generally need a UPI-enabled app, a bank account supported by that app, and the mobile number registered with your bank. Menu names and screens differ between apps and banks, but the checks and authorization principles are the same.

Choose the right UPI payment method
Use the option that matches what the person or merchant has given you. A QR payment begins with a code displayed on a counter, invoice, screen, or another device. A UPI-ID payment begins with an address such as name@bank. An online checkout begins on a merchant website or app that offers UPI.

| Route | What you need | Where payment starts | What may be prefilled |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR code | A QR code displayed by the payee or merchant | Your UPI app’s Scan, Scan & Pay, or QR feature | The merchant’s UPI ID and, in some QR codes, the amount and other merchant information |
| UPI ID/VPA | The recipient’s exact UPI ID | Your UPI app’s Send Money or UPI ID/VPA option | Payee details after the app resolves the address; the amount is normally entered or confirmed by you |
| Online checkout or payment link | A merchant checkout that offers UPI, or a payment request supplied by the merchant | The merchant website or app, followed by your UPI app | The merchant, order and amount can be supplied by the checkout; the exact hand-off and approval screen vary |
These are different ways to initiate the same kind of bank-account payment. None is established by official guidance as universally safer or faster than the others. Your protection comes from verifying the details shown in the app before authorizing.

What you need before making a UPI payment
A supported app, bank account and registered mobile number
Install a UPI-enabled app and link the bank account from which you want to pay. The phone number verified in the app should be the same number registered with your bank. If the numbers do not match, account discovery or verification can fail. Your bank must support UPI for the account and the app you are using.
NPCI’s BHIM setup guidance illustrates the usual sequence: select the SIM associated with the bank-registered number, link an account, and set a UPI PIN. Treat those as BHIM-specific labels rather than a universal screen-by-screen requirement; another app may ask for the same information in a different order.
A working UPI PIN
The UPI PIN is the authentication credential used to authorize a payment from your bank account. Set it through your app’s bank-account or UPI settings if you have not done so. Never disclose it to a person, merchant, caller, chat contact, or support agent. A legitimate payment never requires you to tell another person the PIN.

Enough information to identify the payee
Before you begin, know whether you are paying a person, a shop, a service provider, or an online order. For a QR code, use the code supplied by the intended payee. For a UPI ID, copy it carefully; one wrong character can point to another account. For online checkout, start from the merchant’s own order page and confirm that the order amount makes sense.
How do I pay using a UPI QR code?
Scanning is the practical choice when a shop, individual, invoice, or website displays a UPI QR code. NPCI describes UPI QR as a payment mode and notes that merchant information such as a UPI ID and amount can be encoded in the code. The amount may therefore appear automatically, or the app may ask you to enter it.
Step-by-step QR payment
- Open your UPI app. Unlock the app and choose Scan, Scan & Pay, or the equivalent QR option. Allow camera access if the app requests it.
- Scan the intended payee’s code. Point the camera at the complete QR code until the app reads it. Do not scan a code sent by an unknown person who promises a reward, refund, prize, job, or account upgrade.
- Wait for the payment screen. Let the app resolve the code. Read the payee name, UPI ID or other identifying information. If the app cannot resolve the code, stop and obtain a fresh code or another payment method from the intended payee.
- Check the amount. Some codes carry an amount; others leave the amount blank for you to enter. Type the amount yourself only when you have independently confirmed what you owe. Check the currency and decimal placement before continuing.
- Review every visible detail. Compare the displayed recipient with the shop, person, invoice, or order you intended to pay. If the name is unfamiliar, the amount is unexpected, or the app shows a warning, cancel and clarify instead of authorizing.
- Select the bank account, if prompted. If more than one account is linked, choose the account you intend to use and verify the last few digits or account label shown by the app.
- Authorize in the app. Enter your UPI PIN only on the genuine UPI authorization screen. The PIN authorizes money leaving your account; it is not a code for receiving money.
- Keep the result screen. Wait for the success, pending, or failed status and note the transaction reference. A screenshot can help you match a payment to an invoice, but do not treat a screenshot supplied by someone else as proof that your payment succeeded.
When a QR code contains the wrong amount
Static codes often require the payer to enter an amount, while a merchant can provide a code that carries transaction information. Regardless of how the amount was supplied, the value on your app’s final review screen controls your decision. If it does not match the bill, cancel and ask the merchant to correct the request. Do not “fix” an unexpected amount by making a second payment unless you have first established what happened to the original attempt.

When a QR code will not scan
- Increase light or move the phone so the entire code is visible without glare.
- Use the app’s built-in scanner rather than a general camera app if the UPI app provides one.
- Ask the payee to display a new code; a damaged or incomplete code may not resolve.
- If the app opens a payment page but cannot identify the recipient, stop. Request the recipient’s UPI ID and verify it separately.
How do I pay using a UPI ID?
A UPI ID, also called a virtual payment address (VPA), identifies a UPI account without requiring you to type a bank account number and IFSC code. NPCI’s BHIM information includes sending money by UPI ID. The recipient should give you the complete address exactly as displayed in their app.
Step-by-step UPI-ID payment
- Open Send Money. In your UPI app, choose Send Money, Pay, UPI ID, or VPA. Labels differ by app.
- Enter the address exactly. Type or paste the recipient’s UPI ID, including the characters before and after the
@. Do not rely on a contact name alone when the app offers an address field. - Let the app verify it. Continue only after the app displays the payee details associated with that address. If the app reports that the ID is invalid, inactive, or belongs to an unexpected name, ask the recipient to confirm the address.
- Enter the amount and optional note. Type the amount you intend to send. Add a note only if it helps you and the recipient identify the payment; never put your UPI PIN, one-time password, or other secret in a note.
- Review the payee and amount. Check the resolved name or business, the UPI ID, the amount, and the account you will debit. A familiar-looking name is not enough if the address is different from what the recipient supplied.
- Authorize with your UPI PIN. Enter the PIN only after the app’s final review is correct. The app should then show a success, pending, or failure result.
- Share confirmation carefully. If the recipient needs a reference number, share the transaction reference or the app’s receipt. Do not share your PIN or any login credentials.
Common UPI-ID mistakes
- Typographical errors: Recheck letters, numbers, punctuation and the handle after
@. Ask the recipient to send the ID in a copyable format. - Saved-contact confusion: A contact’s name in your phone does not prove that the linked UPI ID is current. Verify the address and payee details in the app.
- Multiple linked accounts: Confirm which bank account will be debited before entering the PIN.
- Unexpected collect request: If a request arrives from an unfamiliar address or for an amount you did not agree to, decline it and contact the alleged sender through a trusted channel.
How do I pay through a UPI payment link?
Online merchants can offer UPI at checkout, sometimes alongside cards, net banking and wallets. NPCI’s UPI FAQ describes an online flow in which you enter a payment address and receive an authorization request in the BHIM app. That description does not establish that every payment link opens the same screen or follows the same sequence. The merchant, app, operating system and bank can change the hand-off.
Step-by-step online UPI checkout
- Open the genuine order page. Use the merchant’s website or app and confirm that the order, seller and total are the ones you intended. Be cautious with links forwarded through unsolicited messages.
- Choose UPI at payment. Select UPI, Pay by UPI, or the equivalent option. The checkout may request a UPI ID, offer an app choice, show a QR code, or create an authorization request.
- Follow the displayed hand-off. Depending on the merchant and device, the page may open your UPI app, ask you to enter a payment address, or require you to approve a request that appears in the app. Do not assume a link is legitimate merely because it opens a familiar-looking screen.
- Inspect the request inside the UPI app. Verify the merchant or payee, order reference where shown, amount, and bank account. If the app displays a different recipient or total than the checkout, cancel and return to the merchant rather than authorizing.
- Enter your UPI PIN to approve. Use the PIN only on the app’s authorization screen. No payment link should require you to reveal the PIN to the merchant or type it into a chat message, phone call, or web form outside the trusted app.
- Return to the checkout and check the order status. Wait for the merchant page and the UPI app to report the result. Save the transaction reference if the order page does not update immediately.
If the payment link does not open the app
Do not repeatedly tap a link or install an unrequested application to complete payment. Open the merchant’s official app or website directly, locate the order, and start checkout there. If the merchant supports another UPI option, use the displayed UPI ID or QR code only after matching the amount and payee shown in your app. Ask the merchant’s official support channel to confirm the order status rather than sending your PIN or banking credentials.

What to verify before entering your UPI PIN
The final review screen is your decision point. Check these items every time, even for a small payment or a familiar merchant:
- Recipient: The displayed person, business or merchant matches who you intended to pay.
- UPI ID or VPA: Where shown, the address matches the one supplied by the recipient or the merchant checkout.
- Amount: The value, decimal placement and any fee or adjustment shown are expected.
- Debit account: The selected bank account is the one you want to use.
- Purpose: The request corresponds to a purchase, bill, transfer or order you actually initiated.
NPCI’s official UPI FAQ states: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” Treat any request for the PIN outside the app’s authorization step as a fraud warning.

Fraudsters may send a QR code or link while pretending that you will receive a reward, refund, cashback, prize, job payment, or account credit. NPCI’s Fraud Awareness guidance warns about links and QR codes that persuade people to enter a UPI PIN. Scanning a QR code and entering the PIN is a payment action: it authorizes money to leave your account. It is not a method for receiving money.
Best Value
Never do these things
- Never share your UPI PIN, one-time password, card PIN, app passcode or screen-lock code.
- Never enter a UPI PIN because a caller says it is needed to receive money or reverse a payment.
- Never approve a collect request you did not create or understand.
- Never let an unknown person control your phone or watch while you authorize a transaction.
- Never trust a payment screenshot as proof; check the transaction inside your own app and bank notifications.
NPCI’s BHIM information also makes clear that bank support will not ask for your UPI PIN. If someone claiming to be a bank, merchant or app representative asks for it, end the interaction and contact the institution through a verified channel.
What to do when a UPI payment is pending or uncertain
UPI payments are designed to be instant and are available 24/7, but a confirmation can be delayed by the app, bank, network or merchant. A pending screen does not tell you to pay again.
- Check the transaction history in your UPI app. Open the relevant payment and read whether it is successful, pending, failed, reversed, or otherwise marked by the app.
- Check your bank notification or account statement. Look for a debit and the matching transaction reference. Compare the amount and recipient.
- Check the merchant order page. For online purchases, refresh the order only through the genuine merchant app or website. Do not use a second link sent by an unknown contact.
- Wait for the status to resolve instead of duplicating the payment. Sending another payment while the first is unclear can create two debits. First establish the status in the app and bank records.
- Contact your bank if confirmation has not arrived within an hour. NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting the bank when a delayed confirmation has not arrived within that period. Provide the transaction reference, date, time, amount and recipient details.
- Contact the merchant separately when the bank shows success but the order is not updated. Give the merchant the reference number through its official support channel, but do not disclose your PIN or login credentials.
If the app says failed but money was debited
Record the reference and check the account before trying again. A bank or app may update the final status later. Ask your bank how it handles the failed debit and reversal, and give the merchant the reference if an order is waiting. Do not create a second payment simply because the first screen looked unsuccessful.
If the recipient says they did not receive a successful payment
Compare your app’s final status, reference and debit entry with the recipient’s records. A screenshot or verbal confirmation is not a substitute for the transaction status. If the status is pending or disputed, contact the bank before repeating the transfer.
Setting up UPI when you are new to it
Although each app uses different labels, setup normally follows this pattern:
- Install a reputable UPI-enabled app from your phone’s official app store and open it.
- Allow the app to verify the mobile number registered with your bank. Keep the bank-registered SIM active in the phone if the app requires SIM verification.
- Choose the bank and account the app finds for that number, then link the account.
- Set or enter the UPI PIN using the verification information requested by your bank. Keep the PIN private.
- Send a small, intentional payment only after confirming that the app displays the correct account and your bank’s notifications work.
NPCI’s BHIM page documents SIM selection, account linking and PIN creation for BHIM. Other UPI apps and banks may combine, rename or reorder these steps, and some accounts or features may not be supported. If the app cannot find your account, first confirm that the phone number matches the bank’s records and then ask the bank about UPI eligibility.
Quick Recap
QR code, UPI ID or online checkout: which should you use?
| Situation | Most direct starting point | Checks that matter most |
|---|---|---|
| A shop or person shows a code in front of you | Scan the QR code in your UPI app | Payee name, amount and account shown after scanning |
| A trusted recipient gives you an address | Enter the UPI ID/VPA in Send Money | Exact address, resolved payee name, amount and debit account |
| You are paying for an online order | Choose UPI at the merchant’s checkout | Official order page, merchant name, order total and in-app authorization request |
| A link or QR code promises money back or a reward | Do not authorize it | Remember that entering a PIN sends money; verify any offer through an official channel |
| The first attempt is pending | Check status before doing anything else | App history, bank notification, merchant status and transaction reference |
Practical checklist before you pay
- Use the UPI app’s own Scan, Send Money or checkout hand-off.
- Confirm that the mobile number used for setup is registered with your bank.
- Read the recipient and amount on the final in-app screen.
- Choose the intended linked bank account.
- Enter the UPI PIN only to authorize a payment you initiated.
- Keep the transaction reference until the purchase or transfer is settled.
- If status is unclear, check the app and bank first; do not make a duplicate payment.
- Contact the bank through an official channel when a delayed confirmation remains unresolved, especially after an hour.
