You can pay for coffee with Bitcoin only when the merchant currently accepts it. Ask which method the shop supports—usually a Lightning invoice or an on-chain Bitcoin payment—then use a compatible wallet, verify the amount and destination, approve the request, and wait for the merchant’s point-of-sale confirmation. A directory listing can help you find a shop, but it is not proof that acceptance is still active.
Check that the merchant accepts Bitcoin today
Bitcoin acceptance is a merchant-by-merchant decision, not a feature every coffee shop automatically supports. Ask before ordering: “Do you accept Bitcoin, and do you take Lightning or an on-chain payment?” The distinction matters because the two systems require different wallet capabilities and have different checkout timing.

Bitcoin.org points users to BTC Map for discovering businesses that may accept Bitcoin. Treat a listing as a lead rather than a guarantee. A business may have changed its payment setup, paused Bitcoin payments, or support only one payment method. Confirm with staff before preparing a transaction, especially if you need the purchase to settle quickly.
- Ask about the method: Lightning invoice, on-chain Bitcoin address, or another checkout flow.
- Ask when payment is considered complete: some merchants accept a wallet’s payment notification, while others wait for a point-of-sale confirmation or blockchain confirmation.
- Confirm the currency and amount: the request may show a Bitcoin amount, a local-currency conversion, or both.
- Check practical limits: a merchant may impose a transaction maximum or decline payments that do not complete within its checkout window.
Do not send Bitcoin to an address or QR code from an old receipt, social-media post, or unrelated invoice. Use only the payment request presented for your current order.

Lightning and on-chain Bitcoin are different checkout paths
Lightning payments
Lightning is designed for quick, relatively small payments. The merchant presents an invoice, commonly as a QR code. A Lightning-capable wallet reads the invoice and displays the requested amount and payment details before you authorize it.
A Lightning invoice carries payment information such as the amount, destination and validity period. Completing the payment also requires the sender and recipient to be online and a route to be available. When those conditions are met, Lightning can settle in seconds and is intended to use minimal fees, but no merchant should promise identical timing or cost for every wallet and situation.
On-chain Bitcoin payments
An on-chain payment is sent through the Bitcoin blockchain to a payment address or request supplied by the merchant. Your wallet needs to support an on-chain send, and the merchant must be prepared for that type of transfer.
On-chain transaction fees depend on the amount of transaction data, not simply on how much Bitcoin you send. Choosing a higher fee can encourage faster confirmation, while the actual confirmation time depends on the transaction and network conditions. That makes an on-chain transfer less predictable for a purchase that the merchant expects to complete immediately.
| Comparison | Lightning | On-chain Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant handoff | Invoice, often displayed as a QR code | Bitcoin payment request or address, often displayed as a QR code |
| Typical speed | Designed to settle in seconds when a route is available | Confirmation depends on the transaction and network conditions |
| Fee basis | Designed for small payments with minimal fees; the wallet may still show a routing fee | Depends on transaction data size rather than the payment value |
| Wallet requirement | A wallet that can pay Lightning invoices | A wallet that can send an on-chain Bitcoin transaction |
| Best use at a coffee counter | Use when the merchant presents Lightning and your wallet can pay it | Use only when the merchant supports it and its confirmation timing is acceptable |
Bitcoin.org describes QR codes and payment links as common ways to pay. The QR code itself does not tell you whether the request is Lightning or on-chain; your wallet should identify the payment type after scanning.

How to pay with Bitcoin through a Lightning QR invoice
- Confirm the shop’s Lightning support. Ask the cashier to create the invoice for your current order. Do not assume that a shop accepting Bitcoin on-chain also accepts Lightning.
- Open a Lightning-enabled wallet. The wallet must be able to pay Lightning invoices, not merely display a Bitcoin balance or receive on-chain funds.
- Choose the scan function. Use the wallet’s QR scanner, or use its option for opening a payment link if the merchant provides a link instead of a printed code.
- Scan the invoice shown by the merchant. Keep the phone pointed at the current checkout screen. If the code is blurred, partially covered, or from a previous order, ask the cashier to generate a new one.
- Inspect the payment request. Check the Bitcoin amount, any displayed local-currency amount, the destination information and the invoice’s validity. Compare the amount with the order before tapping the approval button.
- Review any wallet fee. Lightning is designed for minimal fees, but a wallet can show a routing or service charge. Make sure the total is acceptable before authorizing.
- Approve the payment once. Because Bitcoin payments are irreversible, do not tap repeatedly while the wallet is still processing. Repeated attempts can create confusion about whether one or more payments succeeded.
- Wait for the merchant’s confirmation. A “sent” or “paid” status in your wallet is useful evidence, but the cashier’s point-of-sale confirmation is the practical signal that the order can be released.
- Keep the receipt or payment record. Save the wallet’s transaction details until you have received the order and resolved any amount discrepancy.
- If the invoice fails, stop before sending again. Show the wallet status to the cashier and ask for a fresh invoice. An expired or rejected request should be replaced by the merchant rather than paid through an improvised address.
The payment cycle can fail even when the QR code is readable. A route may not be available, one side may be offline, or the invoice may have expired. Those conditions are different from a wrong amount, so read the wallet’s status before deciding what to do next.
How to pay when the merchant accepts only an on-chain transfer
- Ask how the merchant handles confirmation. Some sellers may require a blockchain confirmation before treating the sale as final. If you need to leave immediately, make sure that policy is acceptable before sending.
- Open an on-chain Bitcoin wallet. Select the send function that uses the Bitcoin network, not a Lightning payment option.
- Scan or paste the merchant’s current request. Prefer scanning the QR code presented at checkout. If you paste an address, compare the first and last characters with the merchant’s display and verify that the wallet identifies it as a Bitcoin address.
- Enter the exact amount. Check whether the merchant specified Bitcoin or a local-currency amount converted at checkout. Confirm the decimal placement before continuing.
- Review the network fee and timing. The fee is driven by transaction data size. A higher selected fee can encourage faster confirmation, but it does not guarantee an exact completion time.
- Authorize only after the details match. An on-chain transaction cannot normally be reversed after broadcast. Treat a last-minute address change or payment request sent through an unofficial channel as a reason to pause.
- Show the transaction status to the cashier. A wallet may show that the transaction was broadcast while the merchant is waiting for a different status. Follow the shop’s stated confirmation policy.
- Do not create a second payment for a pending transaction. First determine whether the original transaction is unconfirmed, rejected or completed. Ask the merchant for instructions if the checkout screen does not update.
For a small coffee purchase, an on-chain payment may be practical only when the merchant explicitly supports it and accepts the associated confirmation delay and fee. The amount of the coffee does not by itself determine the network fee.
What the United States Square checkout flow looks like
Square documents a specific Bitcoin checkout flow for sellers in the United States. The seller selects Bitcoin as the checkout method and displays a Lightning invoice QR code. You scan that code with a Lightning-enabled wallet, review the invoice and approve it.
Square says these payments settle in seconds, with funds appearing in the seller’s dashboard, and currently lists a $600 transaction limit. These are Square’s U.S. product details, not a universal limit or timing rule for every local merchant and country.
Square support states that a transaction taking more than five minutes is declined and that the seller must create a new cart. If your wallet appears to be waiting near that limit, ask the cashier whether the cart has expired before attempting another payment.

Square’s support material lists a 0% seller processing fee through December 31, 2026 and 1% afterward. That is a fee charged under Square’s seller schedule. It is not a promise that customers pay no wallet or network fee, and it is not the Bitcoin network fee for merchants using another checkout provider.

Lightning costs
Lightning is intended for small payments with minimal fees. The final amount can still depend on the wallet, the route used and the merchant’s checkout arrangement. Read the wallet’s confirmation screen instead of assuming that “minimal” means zero.
On-chain costs
On-chain fees are calculated from transaction data size. Sending a larger amount does not automatically create a larger fee, and sending a tiny amount does not guarantee a cheap transaction. Your wallet normally shows the proposed fee before broadcast. A higher fee can encourage faster confirmation, but network conditions still affect timing.
Merchant processing charges
A payment provider may charge the seller a processing fee. That fee is separate from what your wallet displays and should not be treated as a universal customer charge. The documented Square schedule illustrates why you must distinguish a provider’s seller pricing from Bitcoin transaction costs.
Neither Lightning nor on-chain Bitcoin should be advertised to yourself as universally free or guaranteed to settle within a particular number of seconds. The merchant’s method, your wallet and the current payment conditions determine the result.

How to verify a payment before it is irreversible
- Read the amount twice. Compare the wallet request with the cashier’s total, including any tip or adjustment.
- Check the destination. The wallet should show the recipient or invoice destination. Never approve a request that changes after you have already verified it.
- Use the current invoice. Lightning invoices have a validity period. An old invoice may no longer be payable or may not represent the current order.
- Confirm the network. An on-chain address and a Lightning invoice are not interchangeable payment instructions.
- Protect wallet access. Keep recovery information and signing keys private. Anyone who obtains the credentials controlling the wallet may be able to spend its funds.
- Expect public records. Bitcoin transactions are recorded publicly and permanently. A Bitcoin address is not a guarantee of anonymity.
After approval, practical recovery is limited. Bitcoin.org notes that payments are irreversible and that users are responsible for securing their wallet keys. If you sent the wrong amount or paid the wrong request, contact the merchant immediately, but do not assume a provider or the network can reverse it.
Troubleshoot the most common checkout failures
The QR code will not scan
Ask the cashier to increase the screen brightness or generate a fresh invoice. Make sure your wallet is using its payment scanner rather than a camera function that only copies text. If the code remains unreadable, ask whether the merchant can provide a payment link or another supported method.
The wallet says the Lightning invoice is expired
Do not edit the invoice or send to an address from memory. Ask the merchant to create a new cart or invoice for the same order, then scan and verify the replacement.
The wallet cannot find a Lightning route
A readable invoice does not guarantee that a route is available. Confirm that both sides are online, as the Lightning payment cycle requires, and ask the merchant for a new invoice. If the shop also supports on-chain Bitcoin, use that option only after checking its confirmation policy and fee.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your wallet says paid but the cashier sees nothing
Show the wallet’s payment details and ask the cashier to check the point-of-sale screen. Do not immediately pay a second time. In a documented Square flow, the seller’s dashboard receives the settled payment; a transaction that takes more than five minutes is declined and requires a new cart.
Best Value
An on-chain payment is still pending
Give the cashier the transaction status and follow the shop’s stated confirmation requirement. A higher fee may encourage faster confirmation, but it cannot guarantee a fixed completion time. Never send a duplicate transaction merely because the first one has not confirmed.
The amount is wrong
Stop before approving if the wallet and register disagree. Ask the merchant to cancel the current request and issue a corrected one. If you already approved an incorrect payment, retain the wallet record and contact the merchant; the transfer itself is not normally reversible.
Find local businesses without relying on an outdated listing
BTC Map is a useful starting point for discovering businesses that may accept Bitcoin, as Bitcoin.org explains. Use the map to identify candidates, then verify the details directly with the business. A listing may not show whether the shop accepts Lightning, on-chain Bitcoin or only a discontinued setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When calling or asking in person, use specific questions:
- “Do you accept Bitcoin right now?”
- “Is the payment Lightning or on-chain?”
- “Do you require a confirmation before handing over the order?”
- “Is there a transaction limit or checkout time limit?”
These questions are especially important when traveling, because payment availability, provider support and product terms can vary by country. A method documented for a U.S. seller does not establish that the same method is available at a merchant elsewhere.
What the merchant-adoption statistic does—and does not—tell you
River’s 2026 Bitcoin Adoption Report presents 74% merchant-adoption growth in 2025 as its tracked merchant-adoption measure. That figure describes the report’s defined measure; it is not a census showing that 74% of coffee shops accept Bitcoin, and it cannot confirm acceptance at a particular store. For an actual purchase, the merchant’s current answer and checkout screen matter more than an industry-wide percentage.
A practical decision rule at the counter
Use Lightning when the merchant presents a current Lightning invoice, your wallet can pay it, the amount matches your order and the cashier can confirm settlement. Use an on-chain payment only when the merchant explicitly supports it and you accept the fee and potentially slower confirmation. If neither condition is met, use another payment method rather than sending Bitcoin to an unverified address or hoping an unsupported checkout will recognize it.
