You can pay for coffee with bitcoin when the café accepts Lightning and presents a Lightning payment request. Before joining the queue, install a wallet that can send Lightning payments and put bitcoin in it. At the register, scan the café’s Lightning QR code (or paste its invoice text), verify the amount and merchant description, and tap Pay or Send. The café’s point-of-sale system should confirm the payment; keep your wallet receipt until the order is complete.
Some supported checkout hardware also accepts an NFC tap. That option is hardware- and wallet-dependent, so ask whether the café takes Bitcoin or Lightning before ordering rather than assuming every Bitcoin QR code supports the same payment method.

What you need before ordering
A coffee purchase over Lightning has two sides: your wallet must be able to send a Lightning payment, and the café must be able to generate and receive one. Both conditions matter. Having bitcoin in a wallet that only sends on the base Bitcoin network will not let you pay a Lightning invoice at the counter.

A Lightning-enabled wallet
Choose a wallet with an explicit Lightning send or pay function. Open it before you reach the register and make sure you can see a spendable bitcoin balance. Menus vary by wallet, but the relevant action is usually labelled Send, Pay or Scan for Lightning.

Bitcoin in the wallet
Fund the wallet before you order. A payment request is normally created for a particular amount, and the wallet cannot complete it if it has no usable balance. Allow time for any transfer or wallet setup to finish; standing at the counter while a balance is still unavailable creates avoidable pressure.
A café that accepts Lightning
Ask the cashier whether the shop accepts Bitcoin or specifically Lightning. Acceptance, checkout hardware and geographic availability differ by merchant. A café may display a Bitcoin sign but still support only a particular payment flow, so confirm before the order is prepared.
The counter-to-confirmation payment flow
The following sequence works for the common QR-code checkout and matches the payment checks described in the Bitcoin Design Guide and LND’s documented invoice flow.

- Request the Lightning option. Tell the cashier you want to pay with Bitcoin over Lightning. On a supported Square Register checkout, the seller selects Bitcoin, or you select Bitcoin on the customer-facing display.
- Wait for the payment request. The register generates a Lightning invoice and displays a QR code. Some checkouts also show the invoice as text.
- Open the wallet’s scanner. Select the Lightning scan or pay function and point the camera at the entire QR code. If scanning is inconvenient, copy the invoice string from the register and paste it into the wallet.
- Inspect the request. Confirm the amount, destination information shown by the wallet, merchant description and expiry before authorising. Do not approve a request whose details do not match the order.
- Send and wait for confirmation. Tap Pay or Send. The wallet routes the payment through Lightning. The register should change to a paid or confirmed state; retain the wallet receipt until the café has handed over the order.
Square Register’s documented checkout
Square documents a Bitcoin option in which the seller chooses Bitcoin on the register or the buyer chooses it on the customer-facing display. The register then presents a Lightning QR code. Square also documents an NFC tap flow for a second-generation Square Register when the payer uses a Lightning-enabled wallet.

What a Lightning invoice and QR code contain
The QR image is not a generic Bitcoin address. It encodes a Lightning invoice, which is a payment request carrying the amount, destination and an expiry. The wallet reads that data and asks the Lightning network to find a route to the recipient’s node.
Bitcoin Design describes an invoice as the basis of payment requests on Lightning and as a single-use request with a built-in expiry. Its current guide gives 60 minutes as the default expiry. A merchant can create a replacement request, so the effective lifetime shown by your wallet is the value to follow rather than assuming every invoice lasts exactly an hour.
When a Lightning payment settles, the recipient can verify it with the payment hash and the cryptographic preimage. You do not need to calculate either value to buy coffee, but these mechanisms are why a wallet can report a specific invoice as paid instead of merely showing that a QR code was scanned.

Scanning the café’s QR code
Make the code easy for the camera to read
Keep the whole code inside the camera frame. If the wallet cannot recognise it, turn up the register screen’s brightness and zoom out so the complete pattern and its quiet border are visible. Moving the phone slightly farther away often works better than pressing it close to the display.

Use the invoice text when scanning fails
Many checkout screens provide both a QR code and an invoice string. Select the text, copy it exactly and paste it into the wallet’s Lightning payment field. This avoids camera problems and preserves the same payment request; it does not create a new amount or destination.
Gillespie Coffee describes this QR-and-text arrangement for its Strike checkout and gives the same brightness, zoom and copy-and-paste advice. The cashier can usually regenerate the request if the displayed one is no longer usable.
Can you tap your phone instead?
Sometimes. NFC is a separate checkout path from scanning a QR code. Square documents NFC acceptance only on a second-generation Square Register with a Lightning-enabled wallet. It is not available on Square Terminal, Square Stand or mobile devices according to Square’s support documentation.

If the cashier’s reader does not support the NFC flow, switch to the QR code or invoice text. Do not assume that a contactless symbol means a Lightning payment will be accepted from every wallet.

What to do when the invoice expires
A Lightning invoice is normally single-use. Once its expiry has passed, the wallet should not treat it as a valid request even if the QR image is still on the screen. Ask the cashier to generate a new invoice for the same order, then scan or paste the replacement and check its amount and expiry again.
Do not keep retrying an expired string. A fresh request is the correct recovery because it gives the café a new payment hash and a new validity window.
When the wallet says paid but the register has not changed
Wait briefly while the wallet and register update, then show the cashier the wallet’s payment result and ask them to verify the point-of-sale status. Square says the buyer and seller displays show confirmation after a Lightning payment, so a register that remains unpaid should be checked rather than ignored.
Square’s support guidance also says a transaction taking more than five minutes can be declined and requires a new cart or invoice. If that happens, have the cashier create a new cart, obtain a new Lightning request and follow the wallet’s status carefully. Keep the original wallet receipt so you can distinguish the first attempt from the replacement.
Do not pay the same invoice repeatedly
Before making another attempt, look at the wallet’s history or invoice detail. Confirm whether the first request is marked paid, pending or failed. Present that status to the cashier. A second payment should be made only against a newly generated request after the first attempt’s state is understood.
Static Lightning identifiers versus café invoices
A Lightning Address or an LNURL-Pay identifier can look like a reusable destination. These systems use a static identifier to fetch a fresh invoice when someone starts a payment. They are different from the amount-specific invoice normally generated by a café’s point-of-sale system.
For a coffee purchase, expect the register to create an invoice containing the current total. Treat each displayed invoice as a one-time request even if the café also advertises a reusable Lightning Address for donations or general payments. The reusable identifier does not make an old, already-paid café invoice safe to reuse.
Keeping a useful payment record
Leave the wallet’s confirmation or receipt visible until the order is complete. It gives you the amount, invoice status and timing of the attempt if the cashier needs to reconcile the register. Once the café’s display confirms payment and the order is handed over, you can close the wallet.
If you need to explain a problem, provide the cashier with the wallet status and the time of the attempt rather than scanning the same QR code again. The goal is to let the merchant match one checkout request to one settled payment.

- Wait for both wallet and register confirmation.
- Keep the receipt until the order is complete.
