There are two separate ways to use an iPhone or Apple Watch on the Bee Network. You can add a Bee Card to Apple Wallet and buy a supported ticket in advance, or you can use an eligible bank card in Apple Pay for contactless pay as you go. The first is a pre-purchased transit ticket; the second calculates individual fares and applies the relevant Bee Network caps.
For buses, tap once when you board. For trams, tap in before boarding and tap out at your destination. If you use contactless capping, keep using the same physical card or the same phone or watch for every journey.

Choose the right Apple payment method
Apple Wallet and Apple Pay are not interchangeable on the Bee Network. A Bee Card in Wallet represents a ticket you have selected and paid for. Apple Pay contactless uses an eligible Visa or Mastercard payment card as your pay-as-you-go travel medium.
| Feature | Bee Card in Apple Wallet | Apple Pay contactless |
|---|---|---|
| What you are using | A Bee Network transit card with a purchased ticket | An eligible bank card stored in Apple Pay |
| How fares work | According to the ticket product you buy | Journey fares with applicable adult bus, tram or combined caps |
| Where tickets come from | Purchased during the Wallet setup flow | No ticket is purchased in advance; the payment card is charged for travel |
| Bus validation | Tap when boarding | Tap once when boarding |
| Tram validation | Tap in at the platform and tap out when leaving | Tap in at the stop before boarding and tap out at the destination |
| Child eligibility | Wallet offers adult or family products; availability depends on age and account eligibility | Not suitable for children because it charges adult fares |
| Cash value top-up | Not supported in Apple Wallet | Not applicable |
If you already know the exact period and zones you need, a Bee Card ticket can be predictable. If you want pay-as-you-go travel and the protection of daily or weekly capping, contactless is usually the more flexible route, provided you follow the same-device rule.

How to add a Bee Card to Apple Wallet
TfGM’s Apple Wallet guidance provides the setup flow for iPhone and Apple Watch. The labels below are the current Wallet labels identified by TfGM; Apple can change surrounding screens, so follow the on-screen prompts if your device presents a slightly different confirmation page.
Set up a Bee Card on an iPhone
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the plus button to add a card.
- Choose Travel Card.
- Select Bee Card from the available transit cards.
- Tap Continue.
- Choose the Bee Network ticket you need.
- Confirm the purchase using Apple’s payment and authentication prompts.
The Bee Card is created in Wallet after the purchase completes. Apple Wallet does not support adding cash value to this Bee Card, and TfGM says a physical Bee Card cannot be transferred into Apple Wallet. If you already have a plastic Bee Card, you must use that card through its supported channel rather than importing it into Wallet.
Set up a Bee Card on Apple Watch
TfGM also documents an Apple Watch route through the Wallet add-card flow. Open Wallet on the watch, use the add-card control, select Travel Card, choose Bee Card, continue, select a ticket and confirm the purchase. If the watch asks you to complete part of the process on the paired iPhone, follow that prompt and wait for the card to appear on the watch before travelling.

Check device and software requirements
Supported Apple devices and minimum operating-system versions can change. TfGM lists the current requirements on its Apple Wallet page, so check that live page immediately before setting up a card, especially after an iOS or watchOS upgrade or when using an older device. Do not assume that every iPhone or Apple Watch model supports the transit-card feature.
Which Bee Card tickets are available in Apple Wallet?
TfGM’s Wallet page lists these products. Availability, zones and eligibility are tied to the ticket name, so read the description before confirming the purchase.

A Wallet Bee Card offers adult or family products rather than the full range of child products available through every Bee Network channel. TfGM says children aged 13 or older who have their own Apple Account can add a Bee Card, but younger travellers may need a child ticket through the Bee Network app or another channel. Check the current young-person guidance before buying for someone under 18.
How to use a Bee Card in Wallet on a journey
On a Bee Network bus
- At the entrance, hold the top of your iPhone or the display end of your Apple Watch close to the bus reader.
- Wait for the acceptance indication on the reader and the checkmark with Done on your device.
- Board and keep the same device available until the journey is complete.
There is no bus tap-out. The tap at boarding validates the ticket stored on your Bee Card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOn a Bee Network tram
- Before boarding, hold the top of the iPhone or the Apple Watch display near the tram platform reader.
- Confirm the reader accepts the tap and that your device shows the completion checkmark.
- Board the tram.
- At the destination, tap the same Bee Card at the platform reader before leaving the platform.
Tram journeys require both entry and exit validation. If you transfer between trams, TfGM says you do not need to tap at the intermediate stop; tap out at the end of the tram journey instead.
Use Express Mode when it is available
TfGM says Express Mode is enabled by default for the first Bee Card. With Express Mode, that card can be presented without Face ID or Touch ID, which is useful at a busy bus door or platform gate. Keep the phone or watch positioned close to the reader until the transaction completes rather than pulling it away immediately.
How to use Apple Pay contactless on Bee Network buses and trams
The Bee Network accepts Visa and Mastercard contactless cards and eligible digital payment devices using those networks. TfGM lists Apple Pay among the accepted digital devices. American Express is not supported for this contactless service. You need a bank card that is eligible for contactless use and successfully added to Apple Pay; simply having an Apple device does not make every card usable.

Bus: one tap when boarding
- Choose the bank card in Apple Pay that you intend to use for the day or week.
- When boarding, present the iPhone or Apple Watch to the contactless reader.
- Wait for the acceptance signal.
- Do not tap out when leaving the bus.
Bus contactless travel has a single boarding tap. A second tap when you leave is unnecessary and could create confusion about the journey you intended to pay for.

Tram: tap in, then tap out
- At the tram stop before boarding, present the same iPhone, Apple Watch or physical card to the platform reader.
- Wait for acceptance before boarding.
- At your destination, tap out at the platform reader with the same device or card.
- If you transfer between trams, do not tap at the intermediate stop; tap out only when the tram journey ends.
A tram journey is not complete until the exit tap is recorded. TfGM says an incomplete tram journey may be charged at the maximum applicable single fare and will not contribute to a fare cap.
How contactless fare capping works
Contactless tap and go is priced at full-paying adult fares. The system applies the relevant adult cap across bus travel, tram travel or combined bus-and-tram travel when your journeys qualify. The exact fare table is subject to change; check TfGM’s current contactless page and its terms before relying on a particular price.
Use one payment identity for every trip
For a cap to combine your journeys, use exactly the same payment card or the same Apple device each time. A physical bank card and that card in Apple Pay are not treated as one identity. TfGM says its system sees a device number for a smartphone, so the phone can count separately from the physical card. The same principle applies when switching between a phone and watch: use one device consistently for the journeys you want grouped.
- Do not start the day with the physical card and then switch to the iPhone.
- Do not tap in with the iPhone and tap out with a different card on a tram.
- Do not alternate between an Apple Watch and iPhone if you want all journeys counted toward one cap.
- Choose one payment device and keep it available for the whole fare period.
Contactless terms describe fare periods and payment-device treatment in more detail at TfGM’s contactless payment terms and conditions.

What to do if a tap fails
The reader does not accept the tap
- Hold the top of the iPhone or the Apple Watch display directly over the reader and wait for the acceptance signal.
- Make sure you are presenting the intended card or Bee Card, not another Wallet card selected accidentally.
- Check that the device has power and that the card or ticket was added successfully.
- If the tap still fails, use another payment method or buy a valid ticket before travelling. TfGM lists cash or card payments, Bee Network app tickets and smart cards among its other options.
Do not board or continue through a tram journey while assuming a failed tap will be corrected later. A journey without a valid recorded payment can lead to an inspection problem or an incomplete fare.
The phone or watch battery is low
Keep the device charged and accessible for the entire trip. TfGM expects a traveller using a phone or watch to be able to present that payment device if inspected. A small power bank can be a practical personal accessory, but it is not required by TfGM and does not replace carrying a valid payment method.
You forgot to tap out on a tram
An omitted exit tap can produce the maximum single-fare charge and the journey may not count toward a cap. If you notice the problem, review the journey or contact TfGM through the current support route shown on its contactless page. For future trips, make the exit tap part of your platform-leaving routine.
Inspections, penalties and keeping proof of travel
During an inspection, present the same physical card, iPhone or Apple Watch that you used to tap in. Showing a different card or device does not prove that the journey was paid, even when both cards belong to you. Keep the Bee Card ticket or contactless device available until you have left the tram platform or completed the bus trip.

Children, family travel and alternatives
Do not use Apple Pay contactless tap and go for a child: TfGM says it charges full adult fares. A Bee Card in Wallet can provide adult or family products, but its eligibility is narrower than the complete range of child tickets. The Apple Wallet guidance says a child aged 13 or older with their own Apple Account can add a Bee Card; younger children may need the Bee Network app or another ticket channel.
For current child and young-person options, consult TfGM’s fares and passes guidance. For non-Apple alternatives, the Ways to pay page lists the available cash, card, app-ticket and smart-card channels.
A practical pre-travel checklist
- Decide whether you need a pre-purchased Bee Card ticket or contactless pay as you go.
- If using Wallet, add Bee Card through Wallet’s Travel Card flow and purchase a listed ticket before travelling.
- Check TfGM’s live Apple Wallet page for supported device and operating-system requirements.
- For contactless, confirm that your card is Visa or Mastercard; American Express is not supported for this service.
- Use one physical card, iPhone or Apple Watch consistently if you want fare capping.
- Tap once when boarding a bus.
- Tap in before boarding a tram and tap out at the destination.
- Keep the device charged and ready for inspection.
- If a tap is rejected, do not travel on the assumption that it will be fixed automatically; switch to another valid payment method or buy a ticket.
