Yes—sometimes you can reduce what the recipient learns when you pay by UPI. Use a UPI ID that does not contain your phone number when your app offers one, and review the payee and amount shown before authorizing a QR payment. In BHIM, NPCI documents a control that lets you disable the mobile-number@upi address after you create a secondary UPI ID. These measures limit voluntary disclosure to the recipient; they do not make a payment anonymous to your bank, payment service provider, app, or the wider payment system.
Can I pay by UPI without sharing my phone number?
Often, yes. A UPI payment can be routed through a virtual payment address (VPA), also called a UPI ID. If the ID you select is an alias that does not contain your phone number, the recipient need not receive your number as part of the identifier you used. The exact choices depend on the app and the account setup.

Do not treat an alternate UPI ID as an anonymous payment method. Banks and payment-system participants still need transaction and account information to route, authorize, settle, prevent misuse, and keep required records. The practical goal is narrower: disclose no more to the person or merchant than is needed to complete that payment.
What the recipient can and cannot learn
The recipient sees the payment identity and amount that the app presents for confirmation and settlement. A phone-number-free UPI ID can prevent the number from being obvious in that identifier, but recipient-facing screens vary by app, bank, merchant setup, and transaction type. The official material cited here does not establish one universal list of name, number, or account fields that every recipient sees.

For a QR payment, NPCI says merchant information—including the merchant UPI ID and amount—is stored in the merchant QR and shown on the payment page after scanning. That makes the confirmation page your final opportunity to stop a payment addressed to the wrong person.
How UPI identifiers affect privacy
UPI supports several ways to identify a beneficiary. They are routing methods, not promises about what the banking system will retain or what every app will display.
| Payment route | What you enter or scan | Privacy implication for the recipient | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI ID/VPA | An address such as an alias chosen or issued by the app | A non-phone-number alias can avoid voluntarily displaying your mobile number in the identifier | Availability, naming rules, and recipient display differ by app |
| Account number plus IFSC | The beneficiary’s bank-account details and branch code | Does not use a phone-number UPI ID, but it requires sharing bank-routing details with the payment flow | NPCI describes this as a supported route; it is not anonymity |
| Aadhaar number | An Aadhaar-based payment route where the service supports it | Substitutes another identifier for a phone number; it is not a way to hide identity from payment participants | Use only where your bank and app explicitly support the route |
| QR code | Scan a merchant or person’s QR, then review the populated payment page | The QR can encode merchant information, including UPI ID and amount; your selected payer identifier remains relevant | Check the payee and amount before entering the PIN |
NPCI states that beneficiary registration is not required for the described UPI routes. That means you may be able to pay without saving a recipient as a registered beneficiary; it does not mean the payment lacks a record or that the beneficiary is unable to identify the payer through information displayed by the app or bank.

1. Look for a UPI ID that omits your number
Open your payment app’s UPI or bank-account settings and inspect the IDs associated with the account. Look for a secondary or custom address whose text does not include your mobile number. Select that address when the app lets you choose a payer ID during setup or payment.
- Read the complete ID rather than assuming every alias is phone-number-free.
- Check which bank account is linked to the alias before using it.
- Use the app’s current privacy, UPI ID, or account settings; labels can change between releases.
If the app offers only a mobile-number-linked address, do not assume another app will provide an equivalent alias. A secondary-ID feature, its visibility rules, and the ability to disable an address are app-specific.

2. BHIM: create a secondary ID, then disable the mobile-number ID
NPCI’s BHIM documentation describes a specific control. When a secondary UPI ID exists, a user can disable or enable the mobile-number@upi ID. The QR associated with a disabled ID is disabled as well.
- Open BHIM and go to the UPI ID or profile area associated with your bank account.
- Create or select a secondary UPI ID if the current version offers that option.
- Use the control for the mobile-number-linked ID and choose the documented disable action.
- Confirm that the secondary ID is the address you intend to share or use for payments.
- If you previously distributed a QR for the disabled ID, replace it with a QR for the active secondary ID.
The wording and location of these controls may change. If your BHIM screen does not match these labels, rely on the current in-app instructions and account disclosures rather than guessing. Most importantly, do not generalize this documented BHIM control to every UPI app.

3. Other apps: verify instead of assuming
Official material cited for this guide does not provide a complete, current app-by-app comparison. Before relying on an app for phone-number privacy, verify four things in its own settings and help pages:
- Can you create or select an identifier that does not contain your phone number?
- Can the phone-number-linked ID be disabled?
- Does disabling that ID also disable its QR?
- What payer information appears on the recipient’s confirmation or receipt screen?
If an app cannot answer these questions clearly, use the least revealing identifier it actually offers and explain to the recipient that the displayed ID is the one you chose for payment. Do not invent an alias by editing an ID yourself; UPI addresses must be issued and managed by the participating service.
What to check before paying a UPI QR code
A QR code is convenient, but scanning it does not prove that the payment will reach the intended person. Follow this sequence every time:

- Scan in your trusted payment app. Avoid authorizing from an unexpected link or an app screen you did not intentionally open.
- Wait for the payment page to load. NPCI says merchant information, including the merchant UPI ID and amount, is stored in the merchant QR and displayed after scanning.
- Match the payee identity. Compare the displayed merchant or recipient name and UPI ID with the business, invoice, or person you intended to pay. If the identity is unfamiliar or inconsistent, stop.
- Check the amount. Confirm the exact amount, including any decimal places, before proceeding. A QR can populate a value that is different from what you expected.
- Confirm the linked account and payer ID. If your app lets you choose among accounts or UPI IDs, select the phone-number-free alias you verified earlier.
- Authorize only after all fields match. Enter your UPI PIN privately on the official payment screen.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the transaction reference or receipt available in the app so you can identify the payment if a dispute or correction is needed.
A QR that points to the wrong UPI ID cannot be made safe by hiding your phone number. Recipient verification and identifier privacy solve different problems: the first prevents misdirected payments, while the second reduces unnecessary disclosure.
Protect your UPI PIN—and never use it to receive money
The UPI PIN authorizes a bank transaction. NPCI’s exact guidance is: Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.
Treat requests for the PIN as a stop signal, even when the requester claims to be a merchant, courier, buyer, bank representative, or friend.
- Enter the PIN only in the payment app’s authorization screen after checking the payee and amount.
- Do not tell another person the digits, type them into a chat, or show them on a call.
- Do not enter the PIN merely to receive money, verify an identity, unlock a refund, or accept a payment. The PIN is for authorizing a debit from your account.
- If another person is helping you pay, keep the PIN private and complete the authorization yourself.
Using a secondary UPI ID is ineffective if you disclose the PIN or approve a payment addressed to a fraudulent QR. Identifier privacy reduces exposure; PIN discipline protects the transaction itself.
Is UPI anonymous?
No. A UPI ID that omits your phone number can reduce what a recipient learns, but it does not hide you from the institutions that process the payment. The Reserve Bank of India’s FAQ on payment data identifies categories such as customer data, payment-sensitive data, payment credentials, and transaction data among information that can be gathered, transmitted, or processed in payment messages.
Those categories explain why a UPI payment can remain traceable to payment participants even when a recipient sees only a less revealing alias. The cited RBI material describes data relevant to payment-system storage; it does not establish exactly which fields every recipient-facing screen displays or how every app uses each item.

NPCI’s UPI FAQ also describes the platform retrieving account details linked with your mobile number in a masked manner: the UPI app cannot see all the details, the exchange occurs over secure banking networks, and the FAQ says the platform does not store or use that retrieved information. Read that statement narrowly. It describes the account-detail retrieval process addressed by the FAQ, not a guarantee that no bank, app, payment service provider, or network processes personal or transaction data elsewhere in the payment lifecycle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What India’s data-protection rules mean for extra app requests
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 says consent-based processing should be specific, informed, unconditional, and limited to personal data necessary for the specified purpose, subject to the Act. That principle is useful when an app asks for information unrelated to the payment you are trying to make.
It does not establish that you can refuse data needed to execute, authenticate, settle, secure, or legally record a payment and still use the service. Nor does the cited statutory text by itself determine how a particular UPI app must configure its screens, what every provision’s commencement status is, or whether a particular request is lawful in a specific situation. Read the app’s privacy notice and permissions in context, and distinguish optional personalization from information required for the transaction.
Can someone see my name or phone number when I pay?
There is no single answer for every UPI app and recipient. A phone number may be part of a mobile-number-linked UPI ID, while a secondary alias can omit it. The recipient’s app, bank, merchant account, and receipt format determine what additional identity fields are presented. The official sources cited here do not support a universal promise that your name will always be hidden or always shown.

Use this practical rule: assume the recipient can see the identifier and payment information that your app displays before confirmation, and avoid using an identifier containing your number when you do not want to volunteer it. Then check the confirmation page yourself; it is more reliable than a general claim about what “UPI” displays.

Choosing the least revealing payment method
| Your situation | Prefer | Why | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are paying a merchant that gives you a QR | Scan, review the merchant UPI ID and amount, then use a phone-number-free payer ID if available | Separates recipient verification from unnecessary number exposure | The displayed payee and amount match the invoice |
| You are paying an individual who knows your phone number already | A verified UPI ID or QR, with an alias that omits the number when practical | Prevents adding the number to the payment identifier unnecessarily | The recipient identity and account are correct |
| Your app offers a secondary UPI ID | Use that alias for payments and keep the mobile-number ID disabled where the app supports it | Creates a clearer separation between your number and the payment address | Whether disabling the primary ID also disables its QR |
| Your app offers no alternate alias | Use the safest supported route and do not claim anonymity | A made-up or unverified workaround can misroute funds | The app’s current settings and privacy disclosure |
Account number plus IFSC or an Aadhaar-based route may be available in some services, but changing the identifier does not remove payment records. Choose those routes only when you understand what information the recipient, bank, and service require.
Common problems and how to handle them
The app shows only my phone-number-linked ID
Do not assume a hidden setting exists. Check the app’s UPI ID-management screen and current help material. If no alternate ID is available, you can still verify the payee and amount and keep the PIN private, but you cannot honestly promise the recipient will not see the number associated with that ID.
I disabled an ID but someone still has its old QR
For the BHIM control documented by NPCI, the QR for the disabled mobile-number@upi ID is disabled too. Ask the payer or merchant to use the active secondary ID’s QR instead. For another app, verify its own behavior; identical QR rules are not established.

Cancel before entering the PIN. Re-scan the correct QR or request a fresh UPI ID from the intended recipient. Never authorize first and try to correct the destination later.
Someone asks for my PIN to send me a refund
Decline and keep the PIN private. NPCI says the PIN authorizes bank transactions; it is not a credential another person needs in order to credit your account. Use the merchant’s documented refund process without revealing the PIN.
I want a guarantee that no one can trace the payment
No supported privacy setting provides that guarantee. The purpose of a phone-number-free alias is to reduce unnecessary disclosure to the recipient, while payment-system participants still process the information needed for the transaction and applicable records.
A two-minute privacy checklist
- Is the UPI ID you will use free of your phone number?
- If you use BHIM, have you created a secondary ID before disabling
mobile-number@upi? - Did you verify which bank account and payer ID are selected?
- After scanning, do the payee identity and amount match the intended payment?
- Are you entering the PIN only to authorize this debit, never to receive money?
- Have you avoided describing the payment as anonymous?
These checks address the part of privacy you can control: what you voluntarily reveal and whether you approve the correct transaction. They do not erase the records and processing required by the UPI ecosystem.

Use a UPI ID that does not contain your phone number whenever your app provides one. BHIM users can create a secondary ID and, according to NPCI’s documentation, disable the mobile-number@upi ID; its QR is disabled along with it. Before every QR payment, confirm the payee and amount shown in the app, and never share or enter your UPI PIN to receive money. These steps make a payment less revealing to the recipient, not anonymous to the bank, app, payment service provider, or payment network.
