How to Pause or Schedule Windows Updates on a Work PC

You can pause Windows updates from Settings only when your organization allows the control. On a managed work PC, the button may be missing or greyed out; that is an administrator policy, not a fault. If you need an update to install outside working hours, use Windows’ active-hours and restart options when available, or ask IT to schedule or defer it through Group Policy or mobile-device management (MDM). Do not bypass a company policy by editing the registry or disabling update services.

First, identify which kind of control you need

“Pause updates,” “schedule a restart,” “active hours,” and an administrator’s deployment policy solve different problems. Choosing the wrong one can leave a quality update installing while you thought only a feature release was delayed, or it can postpone a restart without preventing Windows from downloading an update.

Control Who normally controls it What it changes Documented duration or limit Important qualification
Pause updates in Settings Employee, if enabled by the organization Temporarily stops the update offer for the user device Seven days in Microsoft’s Group Policy guidance An administrator can remove the control; feature and quality updates are both covered when the user pause is available.
Administrator pause or deferral IT through Group Policy or MDM Pauses or defers a managed feature or quality update deployment Up to 35 days from the administrator-specified start date in the cited policy Pausing a feature update still allows quality updates to be offered.
Active hours User or administrator Protects the period when Windows should avoid an automatic restart Depends on the Windows release and configured policy Active hours do not create an indefinite delay; a deadline can require a restart during those hours.
Scheduled installation Administrator Restricts installation to a specified time on managed devices Until the configured deadline is reached The schedule can be overridden by a deadline and enforcement policy.
Deadline and grace period Administrator Sets the latest point by which installation and restart must occur Configured by the organization After the effective deadline, Windows can force action even when a preferred schedule or active-hours setting would normally protect the user.

Microsoft describes these as Windows Update client policies for Windows 10 and Windows 11 Pro, Education, and Enterprise editions. Group Policy and MDM products such as Microsoft Intune are administrative configuration methods, and the current documentation uses “Windows Update client policies” rather than the older “Windows Update for Business” name. See Microsoft’s Windows Update client policies documentation.

  • Your company has enrolled the computer in device management or provided it as a corporate build.

Management status does not always mean every option is blocked. Your organization may permit active-hours changes while still enforcing update deadlines. Treat each control independently and follow the policy shown on screen.

Pause updates from Windows Settings

Use this route when the control is visible and selectable. Labels vary slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but both versions expose Windows Update through Settings.

  1. Save open work and connect the PC to its normal company network or VPN if your employer requires that for policy status.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. In Windows 11, select Windows Update in the left pane. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
  4. Look for Pause updates and open its duration selector.
  5. Choose the available pause period. Windows shows the date when updates will resume.
  6. Record that resume date in your work calendar. Install updates before the pause expires if your schedule permits, because the control is temporary rather than a permanent opt-out.

Microsoft’s Group Policy guidance states: “Users with access to update pause settings can prevent both feature and quality updates for 7 days.” That is a policy duration, not a guarantee that every Windows build or company configuration exposes a seven-day button. A company policy can shorten, remove, or otherwise control the user-facing option.

Pausing is not the same as uninstalling an update already installed. It also does not give an employee authority to ignore a company deadline. If Windows offers only a shorter period, use the period shown by your device.

When Pause updates is missing or greyed out

A disabled control is usually intentional. Microsoft documents that administrators can remove users’ access to pause settings; when they do, the controls are greyed out and Windows indicates that an organization manages some settings.

  1. Take a screenshot of the Windows Update page, including any deadline or organization message.
  2. Tell your manager or IT service desk when the restart or installation would interrupt work.
  3. Ask whether IT can approve a maintenance window, adjust active hours, schedule installation, or provide a documented exception.
  4. Keep the device connected and powered as instructed so the approved policy can apply.

Do not edit policy-controlled registry values, stop Windows Update services, use scripts intended to defeat management, or disconnect the PC from company management. Those actions can violate security rules, leave the computer unpatched, and cause policy or support failures. The safe remedy for a blocked work-device control is coordination with the administrator.

Use active hours to protect your working day

Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the computer, reducing the chance of an automatic restart during that period. They do not stop Windows from downloading updates, and they do not postpone a restart forever.

Let Windows choose active hours

Windows can use intelligent active-hours behavior based on device activity. Microsoft’s device-type guidance recommends the default intelligent behavior where it adequately covers the period the device is in use. This is usually the least disruptive choice for a laptop whose schedule changes from day to day.

Set fixed active hours

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update (Windows 11) or Update & Security then Windows Update (Windows 10).
  2. Open Advanced options, then find Active hours. The exact label can vary by release.
  3. Choose the option to adjust active hours manually.
  4. Enter the start and end time that covers your actual work period, including meetings when an unexpected restart would be costly.
  5. Apply the setting and leave a separate maintenance window outside those hours for a restart.

Fixed hours are appropriate when the intelligent defaults do not protect a predictable work period. On shared devices or machines used across shifts, ask IT to set organization-wide hours rather than relying on one employee’s local preference.

Schedule a restart when Windows offers the choice

When an update is pending, Windows may show a notification with options such as restarting now, choosing a time, or scheduling for the next available window. If the option is present:

  1. Open the Windows Update notification or return to the Windows Update page in Settings.
  2. Select the option to schedule the restart.
  3. Choose a time when applications can be closed and the computer can remain powered on.
  4. Save files, close software that cannot recover automatically, and leave the device connected to power.
  5. Check the Windows Update page afterward to confirm the scheduled time and any displayed deadline.

An administrator-set deadline can remove or override this flexibility. The exact restart experience depends on the Windows release and the policies configured for the device, so do not promise a colleague that a chosen time will always be honored.

What IT can schedule or defer

For a fleet of work PCs, scheduling is primarily an administrative task. An administrator can configure Windows Update client policies through Group Policy or MDM, select when a managed device may install updates, and define deadlines and grace periods. Microsoft’s guidance covers policy configuration for Windows 10 and Windows 11 Pro, Education, and Enterprise editions.

Managed installation windows

A scheduled install time restricts a managed device to installing at that specified time until the deadline is reached. This is useful for a computer that must remain usable during a known production shift. The administrator should also account for the restart that follows installation, not merely the download or install start.

Administrator pause and deferral

Microsoft documents a policy pause of up to 35 days for a feature or quality update, measured from the start date specified by the administrator. The categories are independent: pausing a feature update still allows quality updates to be offered. IT therefore needs to state whether the request concerns a large feature release, a monthly quality update, or both.

MDM and Intune-managed devices

An organization using MDM can deliver the equivalent policy remotely, including through Microsoft Intune. Employees normally cannot change an MDM-enforced value locally. Send IT the business reason and requested maintenance window; the administrator can decide whether the policy supports an exception.

Understand deadlines and forced restarts

Deadlines are the backstop that prevents a device from remaining unpatched indefinitely. A policy can specify when an update must be installed and when a restart must occur, sometimes with a grace period. As the deadline approaches, Windows increases its prompts and reduces the user’s ability to defer.

Microsoft’s deadline documentation is version-specific. For Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, separate policies exist for quality-update and feature-update deadlines. The restart experience should not be generalized to every Windows build or every company configuration. Beginning with the December 10, 2024 update for Windows 11 22H2 and later, Microsoft says Configure Automatic Updates is respected before the deadline and ignored after it. That means an administrator’s deadline can ultimately take precedence over a preferred schedule.

A forced restart may occur after the effective deadline even during active hours. Plan for this possibility by saving work, enabling application recovery where allowed, and arranging a maintenance window before the deadline rather than waiting for the final warning.

Choose the least disruptive, policy-compliant option

Your situation Best next action Why
You need a few days and Pause updates is available. Use the Settings pause and note its resume date. This is the supported employee-facing control.
You work predictable hours and restarts interrupt meetings or production. Set active hours and schedule a restart outside them. It reduces interruption without attempting to disable updates.
The pause button is unavailable. Contact IT with the desired maintenance window. The organization has likely removed user access deliberately.
A deadline or forced-restart warning is visible. Save work and arrange installation before the deadline, or request an approved exception immediately. Active hours and a user-selected restart may not override enforcement.
You administer company devices. Use Group Policy or MDM to configure deferral, scheduled installation, active hours, and deadlines. These controls are designed for centralized management.

Troubleshoot common update interruptions

The computer restarts during active hours

Check whether a deadline or grace period has taken effect. If so, active hours are no longer an absolute block. Capture the notification and ask IT whether the policy can provide a maintenance window that ends before the deadline.

The pause ends sooner than expected

Read the date shown in Windows Update rather than relying on a generic “seven days” expectation. Organization policy, an administrator-selected start date, or a different Windows release can change the available duration.

Only a feature update appears paused

That behavior is expected under the documented administrator policy: pausing feature updates still permits quality updates to be offered. Ask IT which update category is being deferred if the monthly update is the concern.

The schedule option disappeared

A deadline policy, a restart already required by compliance, or a change in management configuration can remove local choices. Do not attempt to restore the option with registry edits; send the current Windows Update status to IT.

The device is shared or used by several shifts

Local active hours set by one user may not protect everyone. Request an administrator-managed schedule that reflects the operating calendar and includes time for installation, restart, and verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare for an approved update window

  • Save documents and verify that cloud or network files have synchronized.
  • Close applications that can lose unsaved sessions, especially virtual machines, data-entry tools, and long-running analyses.
  • Connect portable PCs to power and keep the approved network connection available.
  • Record the deadline, scheduled restart time, and IT ticket number.
  • Allow extra time after the restart for sign-in, device-management checks, and application startup.
  • If a business-critical application fails after the update, report the symptoms and update time to IT rather than rolling back or disabling Windows Update yourself.
