To postpone a Samsung Galaxy update, open Settings > Software update (or System updates on some devices) and switch off Auto download over Wi‑Fi if that control is available. Samsung recommends keeping software current because updates include security features and fixes. Postponement is therefore best used to avoid an inconvenient restart, preserve a scheduled work session or wait until you can back up and charge the device—not as a permanent way to avoid security maintenance.

Step-by-step: stop an automatic download
- Open Settings. Swipe down for the Quick panel and tap the gear, or open Settings from the app screen.
- Open the update page. Tap Software update. Some carriers or software builds label the same area System updates. Samsung’s US instructions show both names, and the exact menu can vary by device and carrier: Samsung’s Galaxy update guide.
- Find the download control. Look for Auto download over Wi‑Fi. If it is present, turn the switch off. This prevents the automatic Wi‑Fi download behavior described by Samsung; it does not promise to block every type of update.
- Leave the page. Your choice is normally retained immediately. If the switch is absent, your model, carrier or software version may not provide that control; use the installation steps below instead.
Turning off the switch does not remove an update that has already been downloaded. It only changes whether the device automatically starts that download over Wi‑Fi. Samsung’s support instructions describe the control in those terms, rather than as a complete update-disable feature.
Step-by-step: postpone an update that is already offered
- Return to Settings > Software update (or System updates).
- Read the available actions before touching the confirmation button. If you want to defer the update, do not tap Install now. Samsung says installation begins when the user chooses that action, although wording and prompts differ between builds.
- If the page shows Schedule install, tap it and select a time when the phone or tablet can be idle. Confirm the schedule.
- If neither a schedule nor a defer button appears, close the prompt without starting installation. Reopen the update page later to choose an installation time manually.
- When you are ready, revisit the same page and start the installation. Keep the device sufficiently charged and avoid interrupting the process once it begins.
A downloaded package can occupy storage while it waits. The available evidence does not establish one universal retention period or a single cancellation button for all Galaxy models, so do not assume that clearing a particular notification will delete the package.
Using Schedule install when it appears
Schedule install is model-dependent. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 service manual documents a scheduled-install option, but also notes that the option may no longer appear once the latest software has downloaded. A Galaxy phone, a different tablet, or a carrier-customized edition may show different choices.
Choose a practical time
- Pick a period when you do not need calls, navigation, authentication codes or other device functions.
- Allow time for the restart and post-update setup rather than scheduling immediately before an appointment.
- If your device offers only a time picker and no date picker, treat the schedule as the next available installation window shown by that device.
If the schedule option disappears
Do not infer that the update has failed. The Tab S10 manual specifically warns that the option can disappear after the latest software has downloaded. Leave the package pending and use the normal installation prompt later, or check the update page again after restarting only if the device itself offers that action. Samsung does not publish one schedule workflow that applies to every Galaxy model.
Menu names and software-version differences
Samsung’s US support page uses Software update and says some devices or carriers may use System updates. Samsung Ireland’s instructions cover several Android generations and likewise caution that settings differ. That page was updated on 14 July 2026 and mentions Android 16 and One UI 8.5; those versions are not evidence that your particular Galaxy has received them. Carrier firmware can change which controls are visible and when an update is offered. Two Galaxy devices with similar names can therefore show different buttons. The reliable approach is to identify the stage—download or installation—and then use whichever control your device actually presents.
Emergency security updates are an exception
Do not promise that every update can be postponed indefinitely. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 manual contains this warning:

This is a documented statement for the Tab S10 manual, not a guarantee that every Galaxy behaves identically. It does mean that switching off automatic Wi‑Fi downloads cannot be treated as a universal block against urgent security remediation. If your device begins an emergency update without presenting the usual approval screen, allow it to complete rather than attempting to interrupt the process.

What switching off Auto download over Wi‑Fi does not do
- It does not uninstall or delete an update package that has already downloaded.
- It does not cancel an installation that is already running.
- It does not guarantee that mobile-data, carrier-managed or emergency security behavior will be blocked.
- It does not make the device permanently immune to update prompts.
- It does not change the update’s contents or make an unsupported software version safe to install later.
Think of the switch as a narrow download preference. Installation remains a separate decision, and Samsung’s implementation can change with the model, carrier and software build.
How to postpone safely
Before you defer
- Check why you are postponing. Avoiding a restart during a trip or presentation is different from delaying a security fix for weeks.
- Make sure you know where your important data is backed up before eventually installing.
- Note the update notification or version information so you can recognize it when you return.
While the update is pending
- Keep enough free storage for the eventual installation; deleting the pending package is not a universally documented option.
- Do not repeatedly start and cancel installation, because the available controls differ by device.
- Recheck Settings > Software update when your schedule allows. The page may show a changed prompt after the package downloads.
When you are ready
- Open the update page and review the offered version and installation controls.
- Choose Install now or set a schedule if the device still offers one.
- Leave the device undisturbed until the restart and installation finish.
- Afterward, return to the update page if you need to confirm that no further update is waiting.
Understanding the limits of postponement
There are three different outcomes that are easy to confuse. Turning off the Wi‑Fi toggle prevents one documented automatic download route. Declining Install now postpones an installation prompt after a package is available. A scheduled installation changes the time of installation only when the device exposes that feature. None of these actions is the same as uninstalling a downloaded package, rolling back software or refusing every future update.
If the notification returns, that does not necessarily mean your earlier choice failed. The package may already have been downloaded, the device may be presenting a new prompt, or the carrier may have supplied a different update workflow. Start again by checking whether the screen is asking to download, install immediately or schedule installation.
Cost, data and equipment
Postponing uses Samsung’s built-in settings and has no separate purchase requirement. Samsung’s instructions do not identify a paid tool, accessory or subscription that improves the process. Troubleshooting common cases
The toggle is not visible
Look for System updates instead of Software update. If neither page contains Auto download over Wi‑Fi, the carrier or software build may not expose that control. You can still postpone installation by declining Install now when the prompt allows it.

There is no Schedule install button

Postponing is appropriate for timing, not as a substitute for updating. Samsung says updates provide security features and fixes, and its emergency-update warning shows why an update may eventually proceed without the normal agreement screen. Once you have a suitable time, install the offered software through the built-in update page and keep the device on the current supported release shown there.
