How to Patch Ivanti Connect Secure and Verify the Appliance Is Running a Fixed Version

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Patch Ivanti Connect Secure (ICS) with an authorized Ivanti service package that matches the appliance platform and a supported upgrade path. In the administrator console, open Maintenance > System > Upgrade/Downgrade, install the package from a local file or staged package, allow the integrity and compatibility checks to finish, and plan for the required reboot. When the appliance returns, open System > Status, record the exact release and build, and compare those values with the target release notes and their fixed-CVE list.

A package name or a successful upload is not proof that the fix is active. The post-reboot status page is the authoritative proof of what the appliance actually booted, and the installation result plus event and administrator logs provide the audit trail.

What you need to establish before patching

There is no single safe target version for every ICS deployment. The correct target depends on four facts: the appliance type (hardware or virtual), the current release, the current build, and the vulnerability or advisory you are remediating. Gather those values before downloading anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the platform and running build

  • Record whether the gateway is a hardware appliance or a virtual appliance.
  • From the administrative interface, record the currently running release and build exactly as displayed.
  • Note the management interface and access method approved by your organization, because the console will be unavailable during reboot.
  • List the CVE, Ivanti advisory, or internal finding that triggered the change.

Keep this information with the change ticket. A target that is valid for one platform or source release can be unsupported for another.

Use release notes as the decision authority

Read the release notes for the candidate target release before scheduling the change. Confirm that the notes identify your source release and platform as supported, list the vulnerability fixes you need, and describe whether the operation is an in-place upgrade or a fresh installation. Ivanti explicitly requires supported upgrade paths and rollback procedures. Bypassing version validation can create incompatibilities between installation scripts and platform utilities and can lead to installation failure.

The release notes also define the build number that implements a fix. Treat that build number—not a marketing label, a file name, or a date—as the value you must verify after reboot.

Choose a target release without guessing

Compare candidate releases against the same operational criteria. The following worksheet keeps the decision tied to documented facts rather than to the newest-looking package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis What to confirm in Ivanti documentation Why it matters
Supported source Your current release and build are listed as an allowed starting point. An unsupported jump can fail validation or leave platform utilities and installation scripts incompatible.
Platform The notes cover your exact hardware model or virtual-appliance type. Platform-specific restrictions can change the procedure or require a new installation.
CVE coverage The release notes name the CVE or advisory you are remediating. A successful upgrade is not evidence that a particular vulnerability is fixed unless the notes say it is.
Published build The notes provide the precise release/build combination. You will compare this value with the post-reboot System Status page.
Installation method The notes state whether an in-place upgrade is supported or a fresh install is required. A fresh install changes the change plan, data-preservation steps, and outage risk.
Rollback or downgrade Documented rollback procedures exist for your source, target, and platform. Some current releases restrict or remove downgrade operations.
Compatibility impact Client, configuration, authentication, and integration compatibility notes. The gateway can be patched yet still disrupt dependent services if compatibility is ignored.

Examples of documented build identifiers

Ivanti’s 2024 release notes identify ICS 22.4R1.1 Build 2165 and ICS 22.4R2.1 Build 1725. Those strings illustrate the level of precision required: record both the release and the build, and use the build associated with the fixes in the release notes you selected.

Prepare a controlled maintenance window

Service-package installation takes several minutes and requires a reboot. The administrator console is unavailable while the appliance restarts, so notify users of the expected gateway interruption and arrange an approved way to reconnect afterward.

Pre-change checklist

  • Open the change record and attach the current release/build, platform, target release notes, and CVE or advisory.
  • Obtain the service package through Ivanti’s customer download channel. Do not use a third-party mirror or an unverified copy.
  • Verify that the package is intended for the appliance platform and supported source release.
  • Confirm that you have administrative credentials and an approved management path after reboot.
  • Record the current System Status page and any required configuration or operational evidence before starting.
  • Define a stop point: if validation fails or the target is not supported, do not bypass the check; stop and obtain the correct package or support guidance.

Ivanti’s interface reports integrity and compatibility checks during installation. Those checks are a control, not a nuisance. A warning or failure should be treated as a reason to stop rather than as an invitation to force the package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the Ivanti service package

  1. Sign in to the administrator console. Use the approved management interface and confirm that the appliance identity matches the change record.
  2. Open Maintenance > System > Upgrade/Downgrade. This is the documented service-package workflow.
  3. Select the source. Choose From File for a package available through the console’s file picker, or From Staged Package when the package has already been staged on the appliance.
  4. Choose the authorized package and click Install. Recheck the file name, target release, platform, and change ticket before confirming.
  5. Read the Service Package Installation Status page. It summarizes integrity checks, compatibility checks, status indicators, start and end times, and the software version being installed. Wait for the process to finish; do not close the session or power-cycle the appliance.
  6. Leave Deletes unselected for a normal upgrade. Ivanti documents the Deletes option for downgrade behavior, not for an ordinary upgrade.
  7. Allow the reboot to complete. The console will be unavailable during the restart. Reconnect only through the approved administrative path when the appliance is ready.

What the installation status tells you

The status page records what the installer checked and when it started and ended. Preserve it in the change record. A completed installation result shows that the package process completed; it does not replace the separate post-reboot check of the running build.

Verify that the fixed build is running

Verification has two parts: establish what booted, then establish that the booted build is the one whose release notes contain the required fix.

Read the post-reboot version from System Status

  1. After the appliance is reachable, sign in to the administrator console.
  2. Open System > Status.
  3. Record the exact release and build displayed on the page, including punctuation and revision notation.
  4. Capture the page or export the available status evidence according to your change-control policy.

Ivanti describes System Status as the dashboard for system version information, capacity utilization, uptime, and summary user information. It also provides a link to download the package corresponding to the software currently running on the system. Use the displayed running version as your evidence; do not substitute the package file name, a pre-upgrade screenshot, or the version chosen in the installer.

Match the running build to the fixed-CVE record

  1. Open the target release notes and record their title, revision or publication date, and the fixed-CVE section.
  2. Confirm that the release/build shown in System Status is the release/build described in those notes.
  3. Confirm that the CVE or advisory being remediated appears in the notes for that release.
  4. Write the result in the change record as an explicit mapping, such as “System Status shows release X, build Y; the release notes identify build Y as containing the fix for advisory Z.”

If the page shows a different build from the one documented as fixed, the remediation is not proven. Investigate the installation result, platform branch, and release selection before closing the change.

Handle platform and release-branch differences

Virtual appliances that require a fresh installation

Some virtual-appliance paths have special restrictions. Ivanti’s 22.8R2 notes, for example, limit supported paths and state that some virtual appliances require a fresh installation. If the notes specify a fresh install, do not treat the normal Upgrade/Downgrade procedure as an equivalent shortcut. Plan the replacement, configuration preservation, testing, and cutover as a separate change with its own rollback design.

Releases with restricted downgrade behavior

Ivanti’s 25.1.3.0 notes state that downgrade operations are no longer supported after storage-mounting restriction changes and direct administrators to supported upgrade and rollback procedures. A rollback plan must therefore be based on the documented mechanism for that branch, not on selecting an older package and checking Deletes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When source and target branches differ

Do not infer that a build number from one branch is portable to another. For example, Build 2165 in the 22.4R1.1 notes and Build 1725 in the 22.4R2.1 notes are separate release/build identifiers. Select the branch whose supported path, platform statement, and CVE coverage match your appliance.

Troubleshoot common outcomes

The package fails integrity validation

Stop the installation. Re-obtain the package from Ivanti’s authorized customer download channel, confirm that the transfer is complete, and retry only after verifying the package identity. Do not disable validation or use an unverified mirror.

The package fails compatibility or version validation

Compare the current release, build, platform, and target release with the supported-path matrix in the release notes. A failed check can indicate that an intermediate upgrade is required, that the package is for another platform, or that the target is not supported from your source. Ivanti warns that bypassing version validation can cause installation-script and platform-utility incompatibilities and installation failures.

The console is unavailable after Install

The console is expected to be unavailable during the reboot. Wait for the maintenance window’s defined recovery period, then reconnect through the approved administrative interface. If the appliance does not return, follow your documented escalation and rollback procedure; do not repeatedly power-cycle it or start an unapproved downgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System Status shows the old build

Do not close the change as successful. Confirm that you are viewing the correct appliance, review the installation-status result, and check whether the appliance completed the reboot. If the package process ended without the intended software version, preserve the evidence and obtain Ivanti-supported remediation steps.

The running build is correct but the CVE is not listed

Recheck that you opened the release notes for the exact branch and revision installed. The build can be genuine while the selected release does not contain the advisory fix you needed. Escalate for a supported target rather than claiming remediation from the build number alone.

A repeatable change-and-verification runbook

Use this condensed sequence for future maintenance windows:

  1. Identify hardware or virtual platform, current release/build, and the vulnerability.
  2. Read the target release notes and confirm supported source, platform, CVE coverage, build, installation method, and rollback behavior.
  3. Obtain the authorized service package from Ivanti’s customer channel.
  4. Schedule the outage and ensure post-reboot administrative access.
  5. Open Maintenance > System > Upgrade/Downgrade, choose From File or From Staged Package, and click Install.
  6. Let integrity and compatibility checks complete; leave Deletes unselected for a normal upgrade.
  7. Allow the reboot and reconnect through the approved interface.
  8. Open System > Status and record the exact running release/build.
  9. Compare that value with the target release notes and fixed-CVE list.
  10. Attach the status page, installation result, release-note reference, and relevant logs to the change record.

When to involve Ivanti support or an authorized partner

Escalate before installation when the supported path is unclear, the platform is a restricted virtual appliance, the target requires a fresh install, or rollback is not documented for your branch. Escalate after installation when validation fails, the appliance does not return, or System Status does not match the fixed build. A specialist can validate the path and execute a controlled change, but the final proof should still be the appliance’s post-reboot System Status and the corresponding release-note entry.
