Patch the gateway to a vendor-confirmed fixed release, verify that the running process—not merely a lockfile or image tag—uses that release, then rotate every secret the process could read if unauthorized access is possible. For the current LiteLLM case documented by Check Point Research, versions earlier than 1.83.9 are exposed to CVE-2026-35029 and CVE-2026-59823; upgrading to LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later is the stated fix for those two findings.
Do not treat this as a routine dependency update. An LLM gateway brokers requests and often stores provider keys, database credentials, UI credentials and cloud tokens. A successful gateway attack can therefore become a compromise of multiple provider accounts and internal systems. The runbook below covers discovery, containment, trusted rebuilding, edge controls, credential rotation and verification.

What the current LiteLLM findings mean
Check Point Research describes two separate flaws in LiteLLM releases before 1.83.9:
Recommended Free Tools
| Finding | What it enables | Severity reported | Remediation identified by the advisory |
|---|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-35029 | An authorization problem that can expose administrative functions. | CVSS 8.7/10 | Install LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later and verify the artifact that is actually running. |
| CVE-2026-59823 | Server-side request forgery (SSRF), allowing requests to attacker-controlled servers. | CVSS 5.3/10 | Install LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later, then apply network and input restrictions. |
A separate GitHub-reviewed advisory for CVE-2026-84377 recommends configuration and edge controls rather than relying on version replacement alone. Set general_settings.allow_client_side_credentials to false, limit proxy keys to trusted callers, and block client-supplied api_base, base_url, model_list, fallbacks and provider-credential fields at the reverse proxy or API gateway.

The version boundary is specific to the two Check Point findings. Your gateway may have other advisories, backports or provider-specific fixes, so inventory every deployed version and compare it with the current notice for that component before declaring the incident closed.
Why a gateway patch can require a credential incident response
The gateway is a high-value control point. It may hold provider API keys in environment variables, configuration files, a database, a secrets manager or an administrative interface. It can also retrieve credentials at request time. Microsoft’s incident observations included model-provider API keys, the LiteLLM master key, database connection strings, UI credentials, tokens, passwords and other secret-like fields.
That means a vulnerability is not limited to the gateway host. If an attacker could reach administrative functions, influence routing or cause an outbound request, assume the blast radius includes every secret readable by the gateway process until logs and access controls prove otherwise. Check Point Research specifically advises rotating AI-provider keys stored in LiteLLM when there is any indication that unauthorized users accessed the gateway before patching.

Search the places where a deployment can hide
- Container registries, image manifests and running pods or tasks.
- Python lockfiles, constraints files, virtual environments and build caches.
- CI/CD images, reusable workflows and self-hosted runners.
- Internal agent frameworks, MCP servers and developer utilities.
- VMs, systemd services, scheduled jobs and notebooks that can reach provider keys.
- Infrastructure-as-code variables, secret-manager entries and deployment charts.
Use package-manager and platform inventory commands as aids, adapting them to your environment. For a Python environment, python -m pip show litellm and python -m pip freeze can reveal an installed distribution. Searching lockfiles and image build definitions for litellm helps identify indirect inclusion. In a container platform, inspect the image digest and the package metadata inside the running container; a source repository or a tag alone does not prove what is executing.
Record evidence before changing anything
- Instance name, owner, environment and network exposure.
- Running image digest or package hash, not only a mutable tag.
- Process start time, deployed configuration and mounted secret names.
- Gateway, reverse-proxy, database and provider-access logs.
- Recent configuration changes, failed logins and unusual outbound destinations.
Preserve logs, container images and relevant snapshots before cleanup. Keep a copy in a location the potentially compromised gateway cannot overwrite.
Step 2: Contain exposed instances while preparing the fix
Containment buys time without destroying evidence. Restrict public access first, then narrow the remaining path to authenticated, trusted principals and networks.
- Remove unnecessary internet exposure. Place the gateway behind the existing private network path or an allowlist. If public access is required, permit only the documented client addresses and administrative jump hosts.
- Separate administration from inference traffic. Administrative routes should not be reachable through the same broad client policy used for model requests. Enforce role checks at the gateway and, where possible, at the reverse proxy.
- Reduce egress. Permit outbound connections only to approved provider endpoints, telemetry destinations and required internal services. SSRF risk is materially lower when the process cannot reach arbitrary internal or external addresses.
- Freeze nonessential changes. Pause automated redeployments and dependency refreshes that could overwrite the vulnerable image or logs while the incident record is being assembled.
- Preserve the original state. Capture logs and image or package metadata before replacing the instance. If exploitation is suspected, isolate a copy for investigation rather than continuing to run it.
Do not assume that a private address makes the instance safe. A compromised internal caller, a transitive project or a stolen proxy key can still reach it.

Step 3: Choose between a hot patch, isolation or a rebuild
The right remediation depends on exposure and evidence, not on downtime preference alone.
| Option | Use when | Advantages | Risks and required checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot patch in place | The instance is private or tightly restricted, there is no evidence of tampering, and the package or image provenance is trusted. | Fastest recovery and least configuration drift. | Leaves uncertainty if the host, virtual environment or secrets may already be altered. Verify the running version and inspect logs. |
| Temporary isolation | The gateway is internet-facing, exploitation is possible, or evidence must be preserved before replacement. | Stops further access while retaining the original system for analysis. | Inference traffic may be unavailable. Keep a documented emergency path for essential workloads. |
| Full rebuild | Credentials may have been read, package provenance is uncertain, or the host cannot be trusted. | Recreates the service from a known artifact and clean configuration. | Requires tested backups, secret replacement, consumer updates and a controlled cutover. |
Use six decision axes: whether the service was internet-facing, evidence of exploitation, the number and privilege of reachable credentials, artifact provenance, acceptable downtime and your ability to test least-privilege behavior after the change. When any of the first four are unfavorable, isolation followed by a clean rebuild is safer than an in-place edit.
Step 4: Upgrade from a trusted artifact and verify the running release
For the two Check Point findings, deploy LiteLLM 1.83.9 or later. Build from a pinned, trusted package or image and record its digest or hash. Do not rely on a package name, an unpinned dependency range or a mutable container tag.
- Select the source. Use the approved package index, repository mirror or vendor image used by your organization. Validate signatures, checksums or image attestations when your platform supports them.
- Pin the dependency. Update the direct requirement or lockfile to the chosen fixed release and regenerate the lock data in a controlled build. Review the resulting dependency tree for unexpected upgrades.
- Build without inherited secrets. Keep provider keys, database passwords and cloud credentials out of build arguments, image layers and logs. Inject them only at runtime through the approved secret mechanism.
- Deploy to a clean target when compromise is possible. A new container, virtual environment or host prevents an attacker’s changes from surviving an upgrade.
- Verify the process, not just the source. Query the application’s reported version or inspect package metadata inside the running workload. Compare the image digest or package hash with the approved build record. A changed lockfile does not prove that an old pod, worker or sidecar has been restarted.
- Roll out in stages. Test one isolated instance, then a controlled percentage of traffic, watching errors, authentication failures, outbound destinations and provider usage before completing the rollout.
There is no single command sequence that fits every Kubernetes, Docker, VM or cloud deployment. Use the platform’s documented rollout and rollback procedure, but retain the verification requirements above.

Step 5: Enforce authorization and remove client-controlled routing
Version replacement does not substitute for authorization design. Apply the controls from the advisory for CVE-2026-84377:
- Set
general_settings.allow_client_side_credentialstofalse. - Restrict proxy keys to trusted callers and issue only the scopes each caller needs.
- At the reverse proxy or API gateway, reject client-supplied
api_baseandbase_urlvalues. - Reject client attempts to alter
model_listorfallbacks. - Block provider-credential fields from request bodies, query strings and headers unless an explicitly approved internal path requires them.
- Require authentication and authorization for administrative routes, and keep those routes off the general inference listener when the platform permits it.
Apply these rules before traffic reaches the application. Edge rejection reduces the chance that a parser, fallback path or future application bug will process an unsafe parameter.
Step 6: Decide whether credentials must be rotated
Rotate credentials when unauthorized access cannot be ruled out, when the gateway ran a compromised package, or when logs show suspicious administration, configuration changes, outbound requests or provider usage. Do not wait for proof of data theft; the relevant question is whether the process could read or use the secret.
Revoke before replacing
- Create an incident list of every secret reachable by the gateway account, including secrets mounted indirectly through a sidecar or cloud identity.
- Revoke or disable the old credential at its issuing system. Record the exact revocation time so provider logs can be correlated.
- Issue a replacement with the narrowest permissions and shortest practical lifetime.
- Store the replacement only in the approved secret manager or runtime injection mechanism.
- Update the gateway and every dependent application, worker, scheduled job and CI environment.
- Restart or reload all consumers so no process retains the old value in memory.
- Test normal traffic with the replacement, then confirm that the old credential fails and that no client still depends on it.
Rotate the complete reachable set
- Model-provider API keys, including keys for every configured provider and fallback.
- The LiteLLM master key and any administrative signing or session secrets.
- Database usernames, passwords, connection strings and database-side tokens.
- UI credentials, session secrets and service-to-service authentication values.
- Cloud access keys, workload identities, temporary tokens and object-store credentials.
- CI/CD tokens, registry credentials and deployment-system secrets.
- Kubernetes service-account tokens or equivalent workload credentials.
- SSH keys, host credentials and other secrets readable by the gateway user.
Rotating only the visible model-provider key leaves the rest of the blast radius open. If a secret cannot be rotated immediately, disable the associated integration or isolate the gateway until it can be replaced.
Best Value
Step 7: Update consumers without creating a second outage
Map each secret to its consumers before revocation. A gateway may serve production applications, batch jobs, notebooks and local development tools that are not represented in the main deployment repository.
- List consumers from configuration management, secret-manager access logs, service catalogs and gateway authentication logs.
- Deploy the new secret to a staging or canary consumer and confirm successful authentication.
- Roll out to production consumers in dependency order, keeping the old credential disabled only after the replacement is present.
- Search repositories, images, CI variables and logs for accidental copies of the old value. Never paste secret material into an issue or chat transcript.
- After the cutover, monitor provider errors, throttling, spend and request volume for each account.
Provider-specific revocation APIs, cloud identity procedures and Kubernetes token rotation differ by platform. Follow each issuer’s current documentation for the actual disable and replacement operation.
Step 8: Verify that ordinary users cannot reach administrative routes
Verification must test behavior, not merely configuration files. Use a disposable low-privilege account and a test gateway or an approved maintenance window.
Authorization checks
- Send an ordinary inference request and confirm only the intended model operation succeeds.
- Attempt each administrative route with the same account. The expected result is a consistent authorization failure, not a redirect to a login page that still exposes data.
- Attempt the same routes with a valid administrator account from the approved management network and confirm that the administrative workflow still works.
- Check that changing a proxy key, role, model configuration or provider setting is denied to the low-privilege account.
- Repeat through every listener and ingress path, including internal service names, health-check routes and legacy ports.
Input and SSRF checks
- Submit requests containing blocked routing fields such as
api_base,base_url,model_listandfallbacks. The edge should reject them before application processing. - Confirm that client-side credential fields are ignored or rejected when
general_settings.allow_client_side_credentialsisfalse. - Use an approved, monitored test endpoint to verify that arbitrary destinations are not reachable. Do not probe internal metadata services or third-party systems without explicit authorization.
- Review reverse-proxy and application logs to ensure rejected requests contain no secret values and are attributed to the correct caller.
Secret checks
- Use the old provider key in a controlled test and confirm the provider rejects it.
- Confirm that the new key has only the required provider permissions and account scope.
- Search process environments, mounted files, build logs and image layers for unintended copies of old credentials.
The March 2026 compromised-package incident
LiteLLM’s security update says PyPI releases 1.82.7 and 1.82.8 were compromised and removed. It also says customers using the official LiteLLM Proxy Docker image were not impacted by those packages because that image pins its dependencies. The repository incident record warns that transitive, unpinned dependencies could pull LiteLLM into AI frameworks and MCP servers that never deployed it as a standalone service.
The compromised releases were exposed for approximately 40 minutes. If either package ran in a build, CI runner or production environment, treat all secrets reachable by that process as potentially exposed. Inspect build caches and generated images, invalidate artifacts derived from the compromised packages, rotate reachable credentials and rebuild from a trusted source. “We did not deploy the proxy directly” is not a sufficient exclusion if an indirect dependency installed or executed it.
Evidence to review after recovery
Set a review window that starts before the first suspected exposure and ends after all replacements are active. Correlate:
- Gateway authentication failures, successful logins and administrative actions.
- Changes to model routes, fallback configuration, provider endpoints and credential settings.
- Unexpected outbound destinations, DNS lookups and large response transfers.
- Provider request counts, token usage, spend, error rates and newly observed models.
- Database access, secret-manager reads, cloud API calls and CI/CD activity by the gateway identity.
- Image pulls, package downloads, process launches and shell access on the host.
Look for activity that continues after patching. A clean replacement does not erase evidence of prior use of a stolen key, and provider-side logs may be the only record of requests made with a copied credential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick Recap
Common remediation failures and their fixes
| Failure | Why it fails | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Updating a lockfile but not restarting workers | Old processes continue serving requests with the vulnerable code. | Verify the version inside every running workload and replace stale pods, containers or virtual environments. |
| Upgrading from an untrusted or mutable artifact | The build may contain the compromised package or an attacker’s modification. | Pin the source, record hashes or digests and rebuild through the approved pipeline. |
| Rotating only one provider key | Other provider, database, cloud or administrative secrets may remain usable. | Rotate every secret readable by the gateway process and update all consumers. |
| Relying on application authorization alone | Unsafe routing or credential parameters may be processed before role checks. | Reject them at the reverse proxy or API gateway and test each ingress path. |
| Assuming a private deployment was unaffected | Internal callers, transitive deployments and stolen keys can still reach it. | Review internal access logs, dependency trees and secret-manager reads. |
| Deleting the old instance immediately | Logs and artifacts needed to determine exposure are lost. | Preserve evidence, isolate the instance and keep a trusted copy for analysis. |
Completion checklist
- Every direct and transitive gateway deployment is inventoried.
- Public exposure is removed or restricted to approved callers.
- Logs, image digests, package metadata and configuration evidence are preserved.
- Each affected instance runs the vendor-confirmed fixed release from a trusted artifact.
- Client-side credentials are disabled and proxy keys are limited to trusted callers.
- Routing, fallback and provider-credential parameters are blocked at the edge.
- All reachable provider, gateway, database, UI, cloud, CI/CD, Kubernetes and host secrets are revoked and replaced when exposure is possible.
- Every dependent application has received the replacement values.
- A low-privilege test account cannot reach administrative routes through any ingress path.
- Provider usage, billing, gateway logs and outbound traffic are monitored after recovery.
