In an interactive Claude Code prompt, copy an image to your clipboard and press Ctrl+V. On macOS, use Ctrl+V, not Cmd+V; Cmd+V is the text-paste shortcut. If clipboard paste is unavailable, drag the saved image file into the terminal. Then tell Claude Code exactly what to inspect, explain, or change.
The two ways to attach a screenshot

Anthropic’s Claude Code user FAQ, dated August 7, 2026, documents both paths: drag the image into the terminal or press Ctrl+V. It does not publish a complete compatibility matrix for every terminal emulator, SSH client, or multiplexer, so behavior outside a local interactive terminal can vary.
Step-by-step: paste a screenshot from your clipboard
- Capture or copy the image. Use your operating system’s screenshot tool, or copy an existing image so it is available on the system clipboard.
- Open an interactive Claude Code session. Start Claude Code in the project directory where you want it to work, or focus an already-running prompt.
- Make sure the prompt has focus. Click the Claude Code input rather than another terminal pane, editor, shell, or tmux window.
- Press Ctrl+V. This is the image-paste shortcut documented for Claude Code. On a Mac, hold the Control key; do not substitute Command.
- Wait for the attachment to appear. The terminal should show that an image was attached. If nothing appears, use the file method below.
- Give Claude a specific task. State what the image contains and the result you want. For example: “Read the error message in this screenshot, identify the likely cause, and tell me which file to inspect first.”
- Supply missing context. Add the relevant command, log excerpt, browser size, expected behavior, or recent code change. A screenshot provides visual evidence, not all of the surrounding project state.
How to use the drag-and-drop fallback
- Save the screenshot as a file, preferably with a clear name such as
login-error.pngormobile-layout.jpg. - Focus the interactive Claude Code prompt.
- Drag the file from Finder, File Explorer, or your Linux file manager into the terminal window.
- After the file is attached, write the inspection request in the same prompt.
Dragging is the documented fallback when the image is not on the clipboard or when your terminal does not pass image clipboard data through. It is also the most reproducible option when another person needs to use the same file.
macOS, Linux, Windows and WSL notes
macOS
Use Control+V in the Claude Code prompt. According to Anthropic’s FAQ, Command+V pastes text, so it will not perform the documented image-paste action. If the control-key shortcut does not attach the image, save it and drag the file into the terminal.

Linux and other local terminals
Ctrl+V and drag-and-drop are the documented approaches, but terminal emulators differ in how they expose clipboard contents and desktop file drops. Keep a saved PNG or JPEG available as a fallback.
Windows through WSL
Claude Code is documented as supported on Windows through WSL. The published FAQ does not provide a terminal-by-terminal shortcut matrix for WSL hosts, so use Ctrl+V when your terminal exposes the image clipboard and use drag-and-drop when it does not. If the WSL shell is remote or nested inside another terminal, test the attachment path in a small session before relying on it for a long debugging run.
Prompts that produce useful screenshot analysis
A pasted image works best when the request defines the job, not merely the subject. Use one of these patterns and replace the bracketed details:
- Error diagnosis: “Read every visible error in this screenshot. Explain the most likely cause, list two checks I can run, and identify the project file that is most likely involved.”
- UI implementation: “Compare this screenshot with the current implementation. List the visual differences in order of impact, then propose the CSS or component changes needed.”
- Responsive review: “This is a [device or viewport] capture. Identify overflow, spacing, typography, and accessibility problems. Do not change code until you describe each issue.”
- Design handoff: “Extract the visible states, labels, and interaction cues from this mockup. Turn them into an implementation checklist for the existing [framework] project.”
- Whiteboard or flow: “Transcribe the readable text, describe the diagram’s relationships, and mark anything ambiguous instead of guessing.”
Ask follow-up questions when the screenshot omits code, logs, dimensions, or intended behavior. For example, provide the browser viewport and the exact command that produced an error instead of expecting Claude Code to infer them from pixels.

When Ctrl+V does not work
Cmd+V pastes text on a Mac
This is expected behavior under the documented shortcut. Return to the Claude Code prompt and press Ctrl+V. Do not use Command+V for the image clipboard path.
Nothing appears after the shortcut
Check that the Claude Code input has focus. A different terminal pane, editor, shell, or tmux window may have received the keystroke. If focus is correct, save the image and drag the file into the prompt.
Drag-and-drop is ignored
Your terminal or remote session may not support desktop file drops. Save the image on the machine running the interactive terminal, try a local terminal window, or copy the file through your normal remote workflow before attaching it.
SSH or tmux behaves differently
SSH and tmux can change clipboard and mouse-event handling. The FAQ discusses copy/paste and mouse issues in these environments but does not establish a universal image-paste rule. Treat attachment support as environment-dependent and keep a file-based fallback.

The screenshot is hard to read
Retake it at a larger scale, crop unrelated regions, or provide the underlying text and logs alongside it. Ask Claude to distinguish readable text from uncertain details rather than silently filling gaps.
Security and reproducibility checks
- Review the image for API keys, access tokens, customer information, email addresses, and private URLs before attaching it.
- Crop browser tabs, notification banners, and unrelated project data when they are not needed for the task.
- Keep the original file if you need to reproduce the analysis or share it with a teammate.
- Describe the expected result and the current result separately; this prevents Claude from treating an intentional design choice as a defect.
