How the Xbox Nano Controller connects
The connection method depends on the host. Xbox consoles use Xbox Wireless, while Windows PCs, Android devices, iPhones, iPads, and compatible Smart TVs use Bluetooth. The official Xbox specification lists support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android, iOS, tablets, and compatible Smart TVs.

When the controller is searching, the Xbox button flashes. Microsoft describes that flashing state as the controller looking for a host. When pairing succeeds, the light stops flashing and remains lit.

- Check the battery. A very low charge can prevent the controller from completing discovery. Charge it before troubleshooting an apparently missing Bluetooth device.
- Keep the controller close. Place it next to the console, computer, phone, or tablet during discovery. Move it farther away only after the light remains steady.
- Use a supported host. The documented computer support is Windows 10 and Windows 11. Mobile support covers Android and iOS, and television support applies to compatible Smart TVs rather than every television with Bluetooth.
- Stop another host from claiming it. If the controller was recently used with another device, turn Bluetooth off on that device or remove the controller from its saved Bluetooth list before starting a new pairing attempt.
- Have a game or app ready for testing. A successful system-level pairing only proves that the host recognizes the controller. The game or app must accept controller input as well.
Pair with Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One
Xbox consoles use the controller’s Xbox Wireless connection, not the Bluetooth pairing menu used by phones and PCs. Perform the console step first so the console is actively listening.

- Turn on the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
- Press the console’s Pair or Sync button. Its location varies by console model, so use the physical button marked for wireless controller pairing.
- Turn on the Nano Controller by pressing its Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds. Release it when the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Wait while the console and controller discover each other. The flashing light indicates that the controller is searching for a host.
- When the Xbox button stops flashing and stays lit, open a controller-compatible game or the console interface and test the sticks, buttons, and triggers.
If the light never becomes steady, repeat the sequence with the console’s Pair/Sync button pressed immediately before putting the controller into discovery mode. Keep both devices nearby and make sure the controller has enough charge.
Pair with a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC
Windows pairs the Nano Controller as a Bluetooth game controller. Microsoft documents the same basic sequence for both supported Windows versions, although wording and layout can vary slightly between individual builds.
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds, until the Xbox button flashes.
- On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and wait for Windows to scan.
- Select Xbox Nano Controller when it appears in the device list.
- Wait for Windows to report the connection and for the controller light to remain on. Test it in a game that supports controllers.
Keep the controller close to the PC until pairing is complete. If Windows does not list it, cancel the scan, put the controller back into flashing discovery mode, and start Add device again. Microsoft also recommends keeping the controller firmware updated when compatibility or connection problems continue.

Both versions use the Bluetooth pairing flow, but an update can move a toggle or rename a page. Look for the area labeled Bluetooth or Bluetooth & devices, then use Add device and choose the Bluetooth option. Do not select a different connection category such as wireless display or printer when adding the controller.
Pair with an Android phone or tablet
Android uses Bluetooth for this controller. Manufacturers place the setting in slightly different locations, so the menu may be called Connected devices, Connections, or simply Bluetooth.

- Open the Android device’s Settings.
- Open Connected devices or the device’s Bluetooth page.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Turn on the Nano Controller and hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes.
- Wait for the controller name to appear in the available-devices list, then tap Xbox Nano Controller.
- Accept any pairing prompt shown by Android.
- Wait until the controller light remains on, then launch a game or app that accepts controller input.
If the name does not appear, leave the Android Bluetooth page open, move the controller closer, and repeat the three-second Pair-button hold. Turning Android Bluetooth off and on before scanning again can clear a stalled discovery scan.
Pair with an iPhone
On an iPhone, pairing is completed in Apple’s Bluetooth settings rather than in the game itself.

- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Turn on the Nano Controller.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds, until the Xbox button flashes.
- Look under Other Devices or the available-devices area.
- Tap Xbox Nano Controller.
- Wait for the Xbox button to stop flashing and stay lit, then open the intended game or app and test it.
If the controller is absent from the list, keep the Bluetooth screen open while repeating discovery mode. A previous phone, tablet, or computer can also reconnect first; turn Bluetooth off on that earlier host or remove its saved controller entry before trying the iPhone again.
Charging the controller
The Nano Controller has an internal rechargeable battery. It requires a USB-C charging cable, and Xbox states that the cable is sold separately. Check that you have a suitable USB-C cable before relying on the controller away from a console or computer.
- Connect the USB-C cable to the controller’s charging port.
- Connect the other end to a compatible powered USB source.
- Leave the controller connected until it has enough charge for pairing and play.
- Disconnect it and repeat the relevant Xbox Wireless or Bluetooth procedure.
The published specifications do not state a battery-capacity figure, charging time, or playtime estimate. Avoid treating a brief connection to power as proof that the battery is fully charged; if discovery repeatedly fails, charge it longer and retry.

What happens after pairing
Pairing makes the controller available to the operating system or console, but it does not guarantee that every title will respond. Xbox’s product information limits use to controller-compatible games. A game may also require controller input to be enabled in its own settings, particularly on mobile devices and Windows.
For a clean test, use a title that explicitly lists gamepad support. If the system shows the controller as connected but the game ignores it, close and reopen the game after pairing, check its input settings, and verify that the title supports external controllers. The controller can also be supported by compatible Smart TVs through Bluetooth, but the television’s operating system and individual app still determine whether gamepad input is accepted.
Switch the controller to another device
A controller that is still remembered by a nearby host can appear to be unavailable on the device you actually want to use. Prepare the old host before pairing the new one.
- On the old phone, tablet, or PC, turn Bluetooth off temporarily, or open its saved Bluetooth devices and remove the Nano Controller.
- On an Xbox console, make sure the console is not being paired with a different controller and press its Pair/Sync button when you are ready.
- Turn on the Nano Controller.
- Hold its Pair button for about three seconds until the Xbox button flashes.
- Start the pairing flow on the new host and select the controller when it appears.
If the old device reconnects immediately, keep its Bluetooth disabled until the new pairing is complete. You can turn Bluetooth back on afterward, but leaving both hosts active may cause the controller to return to the previously saved connection.
Troubleshoot pairing problems
The controller does not appear in the list
- Confirm that the Xbox button is flashing. A steady light means the controller is already connected to a host; hold Pair again to start discovery.
- Charge the controller and retry. A low battery can interrupt discovery.
- Move the controller close to the host device.
- On a PC, phone, or tablet, turn Bluetooth off and on, then reopen the Add device or Bluetooth page.
- Check that the host is using the documented platform: Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One through Xbox Wireless, or Windows 10/11, Android, iOS, or a compatible Smart TV through Bluetooth.
- Turn off Bluetooth on the previous host or remove its saved controller entry.
- Repeat the Pair-button hold for approximately three seconds rather than tapping the button briefly.
The Xbox button keeps flashing
Flashing means the controller is still searching for a host. On Xbox, verify that the console’s Pair/Sync button was pressed first. On Windows, Android, or iPhone, leave the Bluetooth discovery page open and select the controller as soon as it appears. If no host finds it, charge the controller, move it closer, restart the relevant pairing screen, and repeat discovery mode.

It connects to the wrong device
Disable Bluetooth on the device that captured the connection, or remove the controller from that device’s saved list. Then put the controller into flashing discovery mode and pair it from the intended host. This is especially important when a previously paired phone or laptop is nearby with Bluetooth enabled.
It is connected, but a game does nothing
Check the game’s controller-support statement and input settings. Some apps accept touch input only, even when the operating system reports a Bluetooth controller. Reopen the game after pairing so it can detect the controller during startup.
The controller will not charge
Use a USB-C charging cable. Because Xbox lists the cable as a separately sold accessory, confirm that the cable is present and correctly connected before diagnosing a battery fault. If the controller still has insufficient charge after using a known-good powered USB source, retry pairing only after it has had time to charge.
Windows shows different labels
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both support the Bluetooth method, but a build update can change the exact wording. Navigate to the Bluetooth settings area, choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and then choose the Nano Controller. The labels may not match the wording in an older screenshot while the sequence remains the same.

Compatibility problems continue after pairing
Microsoft recommends keeping the controller firmware updated when compatibility or connection problems persist. Install available controller updates through the supported Xbox or Windows update path, then repeat pairing if the host no longer recognizes the device.

Size, portability, and availability
Windows Central’s announcement dated October 14, 2026 described the Nano Controller as a pocket-sized model measuring approximately 5 inches long and weighing about 3.5 ounces. Those figures explain why it is convenient for travel, but they do not change the pairing procedure or the host requirements.
Retail pricing and availability can vary by seller and region. The supported-platform information establishes how the controller connects, but it does not establish a universal price, release inventory level, or bundled-cable policy beyond Xbox’s statement that the USB-C charging cable is sold separately.

The essential signal is the same everywhere: a flashing Xbox button means discovery is active, and a steady Xbox button means the connection has completed. If discovery fails, charge the controller, keep it close, clear the old host’s Bluetooth connection, and repeat the correct host-specific sequence.
