How to Pair Sony WH-CH720N Headphones with a Phone, Computer, or TV

Turn on the WH-CH720N. The first time you use the headphones, or after you initialize them, they enter Bluetooth pairing mode automatically. For a later pairing, press and hold the power button for about five seconds or longer until the blue indicator flashes twice repeatedly and the voice guidance says “Pairing.” Open Bluetooth settings on your phone, computer, or compatible TV, choose WH-CH720N, and enter 0000 if a passkey is requested.

Keep the source device within 1 m (3.2 ft), charge the headphones, and complete the registration within five minutes because pairing mode then cancels. The exact TV procedure depends on whether the television supports Bluetooth audio output.

What you need before pairing

Pairing registers the headphones with a source device. It is different from connecting: after registration, the source can usually reconnect without repeating the full discovery process. Use this checklist before opening Bluetooth settings:

  • Charge the WH-CH720N sufficiently. A low battery can interrupt setup.
  • Place the headphones and source device within 1 m (3.2 ft) of each other while registering them.
  • Turn on Bluetooth on the phone, computer, or TV.
  • Disconnect another source that is currently using the headphones if the target device cannot take control.
  • Have the passkey 0000 ready in case the source requests one.

The headphones can remember up to eight paired devices. Registering a ninth replaces the device with the oldest connection date. Remembered devices do not provide simultaneous playback: the headset plays music from only one paired device at a time.

Put the WH-CH720N into pairing mode

First pairing or pairing after initialization

Press the power button to turn on the headphones. On first use, and after the headphones have been initialized, they enter pairing mode automatically. The source device should be able to find WH-CH720N immediately.

Pairing a second or later device

  1. Turn on the headphones.
  2. Press and hold the power button for about five seconds or longer.
  3. Watch for the blue indicator to flash twice repeatedly.
  4. Listen for the voice guidance announcement, “Pairing.”
  5. Start a Bluetooth search on the source device and select WH-CH720N.

If you do not finish registration within five minutes, pairing mode is canceled. Repeat the power-button procedure before searching again.

Pair the headphones with a phone

Android phones

  1. Put the WH-CH720N into pairing mode using the procedure above.
  2. Open the phone’s Settings and go to its Bluetooth section. Depending on the Android version and manufacturer, this may be under Connected devices, Connections, or a similarly named menu.
  3. Turn Bluetooth on and choose the command to pair, scan, or search for new devices.
  4. Tap WH-CH720N in the list of available devices.
  5. If Android asks for a passkey or PIN, enter 0000.
  6. Wait for the confirmation tone or notification showing that the headphones are connected.

Phone makers use different menu names and layouts, so follow the Bluetooth device-discovery wording shown on your model. If WH-CH720N is absent, leave the Bluetooth screen open, repeat pairing mode on the headset, and scan again while keeping the devices close together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iPhone

  1. Hold the WH-CH720N power button for about five seconds or longer until the repeated blue double-flash and “Pairing” announcement appear. On an unused or initialized headset, simply powering on starts pairing mode.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone and turn Bluetooth on.
  3. Wait under Other Devices for WH-CH720N to appear, then tap it.
  4. Enter 0000 if iOS requests a passkey.
  5. Confirm that the model moves to My Devices and shows a connected status.

Once paired, audio output may switch to the headphones automatically. If it does not, select WH-CH720N from the phone’s audio-output control.

Pair with a Windows 11 computer

Sony’s documented Windows 11 route uses the Bluetooth and devices page. The computer needs Bluetooth hardware with an active adapter. Music playback requires the A2DP profile; voice calls require HFP or HSP support.

  1. Put the headphones into pairing mode. For a later pairing, hold the power button for about five seconds or longer until “Pairing” is announced.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Turn the Bluetooth switch on.
  4. Select Add device.
  5. Choose Bluetooth as the device type.
  6. Select WH-CH720N when it appears.
  7. If Windows asks for a PIN, enter 0000.

With Swift Pair enabled, Windows may display a pop-up instead. Select Connect in that notification and complete any confirmation Windows shows.

If Windows says connected but there is no sound

  1. Open the Windows sound controls and select WH-CH720N as the audio output device.
  2. Check that the application is not assigned to a different output in its own audio settings.
  3. Confirm that the headset is still the active connected device rather than another remembered source.
  4. If the problem remains, remove the old WH-CH720N entry from Windows Bluetooth devices, place the headset in pairing mode again, and pair it as a new device.

For meetings, the computer must support the headset profile required by the calling application. A2DP is intended for music playback, while HFP/HSP provide the microphone-and-call connection.

Pair with a Mac or another computer

Desktop operating systems other than Windows 11 use different labels, but the sequence is the same:

  1. Put the WH-CH720N in pairing mode and keep it within 1 m (3.2 ft).
  2. Open the computer’s system settings and locate Bluetooth.
  3. Enable Bluetooth and start the command to add or discover a device.
  4. Choose WH-CH720N from the results.
  5. Enter 0000 if a passkey is requested.
  6. After the status changes to connected, choose the headphones as the computer’s sound output if audio continues through built-in speakers.

Menu names vary by operating-system version and computer manufacturer. If the computer has a physical wireless switch, vendor utility, or privacy control that disables Bluetooth, enable it before searching.

Pair with a TV

First check whether the TV can send Bluetooth audio

The WH-CH720N can connect directly only to a television that supports Bluetooth audio output. Bluetooth on a TV may be limited to remotes, keyboards, game controllers, or other input devices; that does not guarantee headphone output. Sony’s support information notes that TV connection methods depend on the television’s specifications and provides Bluetooth-audio guidance for supported Google TV and Android TV models.

Consult the TV manual or its audio settings for a function named Bluetooth audio, Bluetooth speaker, Wireless headphones, or Audio output device. If no such function exists, the TV may not support direct Bluetooth headphone output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

General TV pairing procedure

  1. Turn on the television and open its Bluetooth-audio or accessory menu.
  2. Put the WH-CH720N into pairing mode by holding the power button for about five seconds or longer until the blue indicator repeatedly double-flashes and “Pairing” is announced.
  3. Start the TV’s search for Bluetooth audio devices.
  4. Select WH-CH720N when it appears.
  5. Accept the pairing request. If the TV asks for a passkey, enter 0000.
  6. Set the TV’s sound output to the connected Bluetooth headphones if the television does not switch automatically.

There is no universal TV menu path. Manufacturers place Bluetooth audio under different sound, network, accessory, or device menus, and some models require a firmware-specific option. If WH-CH720N does not appear, repeat pairing mode, search again, and verify in the manual that the exact TV model supports Bluetooth audio output.

When the TV has no Bluetooth audio output

Direct pairing will not work if the television cannot transmit audio over Bluetooth. A separate Bluetooth audio transmitter may be a possible workaround when the TV provides a compatible audio output, but the appropriate connection depends on the TV’s ports and audio settings. The WH-CH720N itself does not require a special pairing accessory when the TV already supports Bluetooth audio.

Pairing versus connecting

Pairing is the discovery and registration step in which the source stores the headset’s identity. Connecting is the later Bluetooth link used for audio. The WH-CH720N remembers paired devices, but it can play music from only one paired source at a time.

For example, you may register the headphones with a phone, Windows computer, and TV. If the phone remains connected, the computer may find the headset but fail to take over. Disconnect WH-CH720N from the phone first, then select it on the computer. You generally do not need to erase every saved device just to switch sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when WH-CH720N does not appear

  • Restart pairing mode: Hold the power button for about five seconds or longer until the blue double-flash and “Pairing” prompt return.
  • Search promptly: Pairing mode expires after five minutes if no registration is completed.
  • Move closer: Keep the headset within 1 m (3.2 ft) during discovery and remove nearby wireless clutter where practical.
  • Confirm Bluetooth is enabled: Check the source’s Bluetooth switch and, on a computer, make sure its Bluetooth adapter is enabled.
  • Disconnect another source: A currently connected phone, computer, or TV can prevent the target device from taking the active connection.
  • Remove stale information: Delete the old WH-CH720N entry from the source device, then search and pair again.
  • Check the name: Select the entry shown as WH-CH720N, not an unrelated nearby device.

What to do when pairing succeeds but audio fails

Phone

Open the phone’s audio-output selector and choose WH-CH720N. Check that media volume is raised and that the application is not muted. If the phone shows the headset as saved but not connected, tap the device name to establish the link.

Computer

In Windows, select WH-CH720N as the system output and check the application’s own output choice. If the headset connects but a call application cannot use its microphone, verify that the computer supports HFP/HSP and that the application has microphone permission.

TV

Confirm that the TV’s sound-output setting is assigned to Bluetooth audio rather than internal speakers or an HDMI device. If the TV offers no Bluetooth-audio output option, the issue is compatibility rather than a failed headset pairing.

Managing the eight-device pairing memory

The headset stores registrations for up to eight devices. When you pair a ninth, the registration information for the device with the oldest connection date is overwritten. This matters if an old phone or computer appears to have disappeared: it may have been removed automatically when a newer device was added.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Saved registrations are not a multi-room playback feature. Only one paired source can provide music at a time, so switching from a phone to a TV or computer may require disconnecting the current source before connecting the next one.

Quick reference by source

Source Pairing route Important requirement If it fails
Phone Bluetooth settings > search for WH-CH720N Bluetooth enabled; use 0000 if requested Repeat pairing mode, scan again, and remove an old entry if necessary
Windows 11 Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth A2DP for music; HFP/HSP for calls; adapter enabled Select WH-CH720N as output or remove and re-pair
Mac or other computer System Bluetooth settings > add/discover device Bluetooth hardware and an active adapter Enable the adapter, remove stale information, and pair again
TV Model-specific Bluetooth-audio or accessory menu TV must support Bluetooth audio output Check the TV manual; do not assume every TV supports headphones

When to initialize the headphones

Initialization is relevant when ordinary rediscovery and re-pairing do not solve the problem. After initialization, powering on the headset enters pairing mode automatically, so you will need to register it again with devices you want to use. Because initialization changes the headset’s remembered state, try the less disruptive steps first: charge it, restart pairing mode, disconnect the active source, remove stale Bluetooth information, and pair again.

A reliable routine for switching between sources

Switching is easiest when you treat the headphones as having one active audio connection, not as a headset that plays from every remembered device at once. First pause playback on the device currently using the WH-CH720N. Then open that device’s Bluetooth controls and disconnect the headphones, or turn Bluetooth off briefly if the device keeps reconnecting. Put the headset into its normal connection state, select it on the new source, and verify that the new source has chosen WH-CH720N for audio output.

If the new source lists the headphones as saved but will not connect, the old source may still own the active link. Disconnecting the old source is usually less disruptive than deleting the headset from every device. Delete a saved entry only when the stored information appears stale or repeated connection attempts fail. After removal, repeat the complete pairing sequence and select the exact model name.

How to tell which part of setup failed

The indicator and the source-device list help separate discovery problems from audio-output problems. If the blue indicator is not repeatedly double-flashing and the voice prompt does not say “Pairing,” the headset is not ready for a new registration; hold the power button for about five seconds or longer again. If the indicator and prompt are correct but the model is missing from the source list, check Bluetooth, distance, and the computer adapter, then search again before the five-minute window ends.

If the source lists WH-CH720N and reports a connection but you hear sound from speakers, pairing has completed and the remaining issue is output selection. Choose the headset in the phone’s audio picker, the computer’s sound output, or the TV’s Bluetooth-audio output setting. For computer calls, music and microphone use can involve different Bluetooth profiles: A2DP supports music playback, while HFP/HSP support the call connection. A computer that lacks the required profile may connect yet fail to provide the function the application needs.

TV-specific checks before buying extra equipment

Do not assume that a TV with Bluetooth can send program audio to headphones. Some televisions use Bluetooth only for remotes, keyboards, controllers, or other accessories. Look specifically for an audio-output destination that names Bluetooth headphones, a Bluetooth speaker, or a comparable audio device. If the menu is absent, check the manual for the exact model rather than relying on the presence of a general Bluetooth switch.

A transmitter can be considered only after confirming that the TV has a compatible audio output and that its sound settings can send audio there. The suitable connection depends on the television’s available ports and configuration. No transmitter is needed for a TV that already supports Bluetooth audio output; pair the WH-CH720N directly through that TV’s model-specific menu.

Before you reset anything

Initialization should be a last resort for an ordinary pairing failure because it changes the headset’s remembered state. Before initializing, charge the headphones, confirm the correct pairing-mode behavior, keep the devices within 1 m (3.2 ft), disconnect another active source, and remove the old WH-CH720N entry from the target device. If those steps work, the headphones can be used without rebuilding every saved registration. If initialization is necessary, expect to register the headphones again with the devices you want to use.

For the shortest reliable setup, keep the headset close, use the repeated blue double-flash and “Pairing” announcement as confirmation, select the exact name WH-CH720N, and remember that TV support depends on Bluetooth audio output in the television itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the WH-CH720N not appear in Bluetooth settings?

Put the headphones back into pairing mode by holding the power button for about five seconds or longer until the blue indicator repeatedly double-flashes and “Pairing” is announced. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled, keep the source within 1 m (3.2 ft), search again promptly, and remove an old WH-CH720N entry if the source has stale pairing information.

What is the Sony WH-CH720N pairing PIN?

Use 0000 if the phone, computer, or TV requests a passkey or PIN.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can the WH-CH720N connect to more than one device?

The headphones can remember up to eight paired devices. Pairing a ninth overwrites the registration with the oldest connection date. They can play music from only one paired device at a time, so disconnect the current source before switching.

Why does Windows say connected but play sound through its speakers?

Open Windows sound controls and select WH-CH720N as the output device. Also check the application’s own output setting. If the entry is stale, remove it from Bluetooth devices, put the headphones into pairing mode again, and pair them as a new device.

Can I pair the WH-CH720N with any TV that has Bluetooth?

No. The TV must support Bluetooth audio output. A Bluetooth menu used for remotes or keyboards does not guarantee headphone support. Check the exact TV model’s manual or audio settings for a Bluetooth-audio output option.

Do I need a Bluetooth transmitter for my TV?

Only when the TV lacks direct Bluetooth-audio output and provides a compatible audio connection for a transmitter. A transmitter is not required when the TV already supports Bluetooth headphones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does pairing mode stay active?

Pairing mode is canceled if registration is not completed within five minutes. Repeat the power-button procedure to start it again.

What should I do if the headset connects but a computer call has no microphone?

Confirm that the computer supports HFP or HSP for call use and that the calling application has microphone permission. A2DP is the profile intended for music playback, while HFP/HSP provide the call connection.

The Bottom Line

Turn on the WH-CH720N for automatic first-use pairing, or hold the power button for about five seconds until “Pairing” and the repeated blue double-flash appear. Select WH-CH720N in the source’s Bluetooth menu and use 0000 if prompted. Keep the device within 1 m, finish within five minutes, disconnect other active sources, and confirm that a TV supports Bluetooth audio output before expecting a direct connection.
