Put the headphones into Bluetooth pairing mode using the procedure for your exact Sony model, then open Bluetooth settings on each source and select the headphones’ actual model name. Pairing saves the devices’ information; it does not guarantee that a phone, laptop, and tablet can all stay connected at the same time. Most models use one active audio connection, while models with multipoint can maintain two connections.

Pairing and connecting are different

Bluetooth pairing is the first exchange of device information. Once the exchange is saved, the source can usually reconnect without repeating the setup. Sony summarizes the dependency this way: “Pairing is a requirement before the devices can connect.” (Sony Bluetooth Pairing and Connection, last modified January 16, 2026.)

An active connection is the live Bluetooth link carrying music, notification sounds, or calls. A phone, laptop, or tablet may show the headphones as previously paired but not currently connected. In that case, select the headphones in that device’s Bluetooth list to request a connection.

  • Paired: the device record is saved for future use.
  • Connected: the headphones are currently linked to that source.
  • Multipoint: a supported feature that keeps two source devices connected at once.

Pairing the same headphones separately with three sources therefore stores three records; it does not turn a non-multipoint model into a three-device headset. Sony’s multipoint guidance limits supported models to two connected devices at a time.

Think of pairing as creating permission and connection as using that permission. If you put the headphones away and later turn them on near a source they already know, the source can often reconnect. If you choose a different already-paired source, you are changing the active link rather than creating a new pairing. You normally need to repeat pairing only when a saved record was deleted, the headphones were initialized, or you are adding a new source.

Before you start

  • Identify the complete model number printed on the headphones, packaging, or existing Bluetooth entry. Sony’s button timing, voice prompts, and supported features vary by model and generation.
  • Charge the headphones enough to remain on during setup.
  • Keep the headphones close to the phone, computer, or tablet while pairing.
  • Temporarily stop audio on another device that may already be connected. An active connection can prevent the headphones from appearing for a new pairing.
  • Open the source device’s current Bluetooth settings. Menu names and locations change between iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and tablet software versions.

Do not assume that every Sony noise-canceling model supports multipoint. Confirm support for the precise model in its Sony help documentation before following the two-device procedure.

Have the source devices available before you begin. If you are adding a phone, laptop, and tablet, pair them one at a time and verify each result before moving on. This makes it clear which source has a saved record and which one is currently active. It also avoids confusing a nearby device’s Bluetooth listing with the headphones’ listing.

How to put Sony headphones into pairing mode

Use the exact model’s official help guide for the pairing-mode button, hold time, and confirmation sound. The available material does not establish one universal sequence for every Sony headphone generation, so a button instruction for one model should not be treated as a brand-wide rule.

  1. Turn on the headphones according to the model’s instructions.
  2. Start Bluetooth pairing mode using that model’s documented control. Wait for the voice prompt, indicator, or other confirmation that pairing mode has begun.
  3. Leave the headphones in pairing mode while you open Bluetooth settings on the source device.

If the headphones were already paired with another source, disconnect them there first or follow the model’s documented method for entering pairing mode while powered on. If a model has been initialized or its saved records were deleted, every source must be paired again.

Pairing mode is temporary on many products, so do not leave the headphones waiting while you search through unrelated settings. Open the source’s Bluetooth page first when practical, then start pairing mode and watch for the model name. If the entry does not appear, repeat the model-specific procedure rather than assuming the headphones are defective.

Pair Sony headphones with a phone

Pairing procedure

  1. Put the headphones into pairing mode using the exact-model instructions.
  2. On the phone, open the system Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
  3. Wait for the available-device list to refresh, then select the headphones’ real model name, such as WH-1000XM4 when that is the model you own.
  4. Accept any pairing confirmation shown on the phone. Keep the headphones close until the status changes to connected or paired.
  5. Play a short sound to verify that the phone is using the headphones.

Sony warns that the model entry can take time to appear. Select the normal model entry rather than an LE_-prefixed entry when both are listed; Sony’s example distinguishes WH-1000XM4 from LE_WH-1000XM4. The exact entries for other models may differ.

If the phone says “paired” but audio remains on the handset

Open the phone’s Bluetooth device list and select the headphones to make the connection active. Then check the phone’s audio-output control and choose the Sony headphones if more than one output is available. Pairing status alone does not select the active audio route.

If the phone was paired earlier, you do not need to delete the record simply because it is not connected now. Select the saved Sony entry and wait for the connection status to change. Delete and re-pair only when the record was removed, the headphones were initialized, or repeated attempts leave an unusable saved entry.

Connect Sony headphones to a laptop

Pairing procedure

  1. Stop playback on the phone or another source that may be connected.
  2. Place the headphones in pairing mode using the model-specific instructions.
  3. Open the laptop’s current Bluetooth settings, enable Bluetooth, and choose Add device or the equivalent command for that operating system.
  4. Select the headphones’ actual model name from the discovered-device list, not an unrelated or LE-prefixed entry when Sony’s guidance distinguishes the two.
  5. Wait for the laptop to report that the device is connected, then open the laptop’s sound controls and select the headphones as the speaker output.

A laptop can show a successful Bluetooth connection while continuing to send sound to its built-in speakers or another output. Sony’s multipoint guide specifically calls out checking the computer’s sound-output selection when no audio is heard (Sony: Connect the headphones to two devices simultaneously).

Choose the right computer profile

Computers commonly expose separate Bluetooth audio profiles. The stereo headphones profile is intended for music and other high-quality playback. A hands-free headset profile is intended for calls and video conferences because it provides microphone input as well as audio. In Sony’s example, choose the hands-free headset profile for meetings or calls when the application needs the headphone microphone; choose stereo playback for normal listening. The labels differ by operating system, so select the profile that matches the task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meeting, the conferencing application can have its own input and output selectors in addition to the operating system’s sound panel. Set the Sony hands-free headset profile where the microphone is required, and check the application’s selected devices. After the meeting, return to the stereo headphones profile for ordinary listening if the computer presents both choices.

Pair Sony headphones with a tablet

Pairing procedure

  1. Enter pairing mode on the headphones using the instructions for the exact model.
  2. Open the tablet’s system Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth.
  3. Wait for the available-device list, then tap the headphones’ actual model name.
  4. Accept the pairing request and wait for the connected or paired status.
  5. Start playback and use the tablet’s audio-output control if sound is routed elsewhere.

A tablet follows the same Bluetooth principles as a phone, but its operating-system menus and output controls may be arranged differently. Use the tablet maker’s current Bluetooth instructions for the precise menu path; Sony’s headphone-side pairing behavior remains model dependent.

Pairing the tablet after the phone and laptop saves a third device record when the model allows it. It does not automatically disconnect or erase the earlier records. For a non-multipoint model, connect to the tablet when you want to use it, then reconnect manually to the phone or laptop later.

Use one Sony headset with a phone, laptop, and tablet

Situation What is saved How many devices can be active What you do to switch
Ordinary Bluetooth model Pairing records for each source you add Usually one active source at a time Stop or disconnect the current source, then select the headphones on the next source
Supported multipoint model Pairing records for each source, with two selected for simultaneous connection Two sources maximum according to Sony’s general guide Pause the first source when necessary and select or play from the intended source
Three paired sources on a non-multipoint model Three saved records Not three simultaneous links Connect manually to the source you want to use

Adding the phone, laptop, and tablet one after another does not itself enable simultaneous use. If the headphones support only one active connection, the source that connects last generally becomes the active one after the previous link is released.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multipoint is best understood as two active connections, not as a three-way audio mixer. A phone and computer can remain selected while you listen to one, then pause it and start the other. A third paired tablet remains stored, but it is not one of the two simultaneous connections unless you change the selected sources in the companion controls.

When switching manually on a one-connection model, stop playback on the first source before selecting the headphones on the second. This releases the active link and prevents the second device from appearing unable to connect. If a device still reports only “paired,” select the Sony entry again to request the live connection.

Set up multipoint on a supported model

Multipoint is model-specific. Sony’s general instructions use the WH-1000XM4 as an example and say the steps are generally similar across models, but the feature is not present on every Sony noise-canceling headset. Check the exact model’s specifications or help page first.

Phone-and-computer setup

  1. Pair the headphones with the phone using the phone procedure above.
  2. Pair the same headphones with the laptop or other computer.
  3. Open the Sony companion app on the phone. Sony’s general guide describes the setting as Connect to 2 devices simultaneously.
  4. Enable that two-device option.
  5. In the app’s device-selection screen, choose the other paired source, such as the computer.
  6. Confirm that both sources show as connected, then test each one separately.

When both sources are connected, pause playback on the first device before starting audio on the second if the switch does not occur automatically. Sony notes that changing sources can require stopping playback on the first source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The order matters: pair both sources first, then enable the two-device setting and select the second source in the app. Turning on a multipoint control cannot create a pairing record for a device that has never been paired. If either source was forgotten or the headphones were initialized, pair that source again before configuring multipoint.

What the app can and cannot do

The Sony app is not required for basic Bluetooth pairing: the phone, laptop, and tablet can be paired through their own Bluetooth settings. The app is relevant here because Sony places the two-device multipoint control there on supported models.

For the WH-1000XM5, Sony identifies Sony | Sound Connect as a smartphone app and states that there is no PC app. Its support page lists the two-device setting among functions that carry over to a PC. The model-specific information is available on Sony | Sound Connect, and Sony’s WH-1000XM5 multipoint overview is at the model-specific feature video page. Do not infer that another Sony model uses the same app name, menu, or capability without checking its support page.

Because Sony’s app functions are model dependent, an app menu that appears for one generation may be absent for another. The absence of a two-device control is therefore a reason to verify model support, not proof that basic Bluetooth pairing has failed.

Troubleshoot pairing and connection problems

The headphones do not appear in Bluetooth settings

  • Verify the exact model’s pairing-mode procedure and confirmation prompt; the headphones may simply not be in pairing mode.
  • Make sure they are not actively connected to another source. Stop playback and disconnect them there, then search again.
  • Wait for the list to refresh. Sony notes that the model can take time to appear.
  • Select the normal model name rather than an LE-prefixed entry when both appear and Sony’s guidance distinguishes them.
  • Move the source closer and retry with other nearby Bluetooth activity minimized.

If the list still does not show the headphones, repeat the pairing-mode step with the source’s Bluetooth page already open. Confirm the model number before selecting an entry, since similarly named listings can represent different devices or Bluetooth functions.

The headphones were paired before but will not connect

Open the source’s saved Bluetooth devices and choose the headphones manually. This requests a new active connection without repeating the initial pairing exchange. If the saved record was deleted or the headphones were initialized, put them back into pairing mode and pair them again.

The second multipoint source has no sound

  1. Pause playback on the first connected source.
  2. Start playback on the intended second source.
  3. Check the second source’s audio-output selector and choose the Sony headphones.
  4. If the second source still will not connect, open the Sony app’s two-device setting and confirm that the intended paired device is selected.

Two devices can be connected while only one is producing audio. Multipoint does not remove the need to choose the correct output on the source, and an actively playing first source can prevent the switch until it is paused.

The laptop shows connected but produces no audio

Select the headphones as the laptop’s speaker output rather than relying on the Bluetooth connection badge. For a call or conference, select the hands-free headset profile if the application needs the headphone microphone. For music, select the stereo headphones profile where the operating system offers both.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The multipoint option is missing

Check support for the precise headphone model and firmware guidance. Sony’s brand name alone does not establish multipoint support, and the availability of the Sony app does not prove that a particular model can maintain two connections. If the model is not supported, use one active connection at a time and switch sources manually.

The wrong Bluetooth entry was selected

If Sony’s device list shows both the model name and an LE_-prefixed version, return to the list and select the normal model entry. Sony’s WH-1000XM4 example specifically distinguishes those entries. Other models may display different names, so use the exact model guidance rather than assuming every listing follows the same pattern.

When to clear pairings and start over

Do not delete every saved Bluetooth record as a first step: a previously paired source normally needs only to be selected again for an active connection. A full re-pair is appropriate when the headphone’s pairing records were initialized, a source’s Bluetooth record was removed, or repeated connection attempts leave stale records that cannot be selected. Use the exact model’s official initialization and pairing instructions, because the reset controls and confirmation sequence differ among Sony generations.

After initialization, treat each source as new: enter pairing mode, select the normal model entry, and confirm the connection separately on the phone, laptop, and tablet. Only after those records are saved should you configure multipoint, if the model supports it.

Quick checklist

  • Identify the exact Sony model.
  • Use that model’s documented pairing-mode control.
  • Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, laptop, or tablet.
  • Select the real model name, not an LE-prefixed listing when Sony distinguishes it.
  • Remember that paired does not mean actively connected.
  • For computer audio, select the headphones as the output and choose stereo or hands-free according to the task.
  • Enable Connect to 2 devices simultaneously in the Sony app only when the exact model supports multipoint.
  • Expect a maximum of two active sources on supported multipoint models, not three.
  • Pause the first source when switching audio to the second multipoint source.
  • Re-pair only after a saved record was deleted, the headphones were initialized, or the existing record cannot be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Sony headphones be paired with a phone, laptop, and tablet?

Yes. Pair each source separately and the headphones can save each device’s information. Saving three pairings does not mean all three can remain connected simultaneously.

Do all Sony noise-canceling headphones support multipoint?

No. Multipoint is model dependent. Check the exact model’s Sony support documentation before looking for the two-device setting.

Why does my computer say the headphones are connected but play sound through its speakers?

Bluetooth connection status and audio routing are separate. Select the Sony headphones as the computer’s speaker output. For calls that need the headphone microphone, choose the hands-free headset profile; use the stereo profile for normal music playback.

Is the Sony app required to pair the headphones?

No. Basic pairing uses the phone, laptop, or tablet’s own Bluetooth settings. On supported models, Sony places the multipoint control in its companion app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I see both WH-1000XM4 and LE_WH-1000XM4?

Sony’s example says to select the normal model entry, WH-1000XM4, rather than the LE-prefixed listing. Other models may use different names, so follow the exact-model guidance.

Can multipoint connect three devices at once?

Sony’s general multipoint guide limits supported models to two connected devices at a time. A third device may remain paired but must be selected after one of the active connections is released.

Why does the second multipoint device have no audio?

Pause playback on the first source, start playback on the intended second source, and confirm that the second source has selected the Sony headphones as its output. Also verify the app’s two-device selection.

When should I delete a Bluetooth pairing and start again?

Try selecting the saved headphones entry first. Re-pair when the source record was deleted, the headphones were initialized, or repeated connection attempts leave a stale record that cannot be selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Pair each source through its Bluetooth settings using the exact Sony model name and model-specific pairing instructions. A saved pairing is not an active connection, and three saved devices do not create three simultaneous links. Only supported models offer multipoint, which Sony limits to two active sources; use the companion app for that feature and select the correct computer audio profile for music or calls.
