Nothing Ear (open) pairs through your phone’s Bluetooth settings. On a supported Android phone, Google Fast Pair can show an on-screen setup card; on iPhone, and on Android when Fast Pair is unavailable, use the case button and the Bluetooth device list.
Choose the right pairing route
Your platform determines whether a quick prompt is available, but both routes end with the earbuds connected over Bluetooth.

| Phone | Recommended first route | Fallback |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Manual Bluetooth pairing | Use the same manual steps if the earbuds do not appear on the first scan |
| Supported Android phone | Google Fast Pair while the case is open | Manual Bluetooth pairing from the phone’s Bluetooth settings |
| Android phone without Fast Pair support | Manual Bluetooth pairing | Use the manual sequence again after returning the earbuds to pairing mode |
Fast Pair is optional. Nothing’s documented Bluetooth method works on either platform, so you do not need Fast Pair to complete setup.
Check these requirements first
- Put both Ear (open) earbuds in their charging case before starting the documented setup.
- Leave the case lid open while you begin pairing.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone. On an iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth. Android menu names can vary by manufacturer, but the control is normally under the phone’s Bluetooth or connected-devices settings.
- Keep the phone close enough for the Bluetooth scan and leave the case open until pairing is complete.
Nothing lists Bluetooth 5.3, Android 5.0 and later, and iOS 13 and later as the product’s general compatibility specifications on the Ear (open) product page. Those are broad platform floors for using the earbuds; Fast Pair has additional requirements described below.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Manual Bluetooth pairing on an iPhone or Android phone
Use this sequence on an iPhone, or on Android when the Fast Pair card does not appear.
- Open the case with both earbuds inside. This puts the hardware in the starting state used by Nothing’s pairing instructions.
- Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the function button on the charging case for about three seconds. Nothing says the case indicator blinks white when the earbuds enter pairing mode.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth device list. On iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and wait under the available-devices area. On Android, open the Bluetooth settings and start or wait for a device scan.
- Select the earbuds. Tap the Ear (open) entry when it appears in the available-device list. Accept any connection prompt shown by the phone.
The manual route does not depend on the Nothing X app. It uses the case’s pairing control and the phone’s own Bluetooth menu, which is why it remains the reliable option when an Android Fast Pair prompt is not offered.
If you are pairing an iPhone
iPhone uses the manual route. There is no Fast Pair step in the documented iPhone process: open the case, use the case function button to enter pairing mode, then choose Ear (open) under Settings > Bluetooth.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
If you are pairing an Android phone without a prompt
Do not wait indefinitely for a pop-up. Use the manual sequence above. Fast Pair is a convenience layer, not a requirement for Bluetooth audio.
Google Fast Pair on supported Android phones
Fast Pair can shorten setup by presenting an on-screen prompt when the open case is near a compatible Android phone.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the Android phone.
- Place both earbuds in the charging case and open the lid.
- Watch for the Ear (open) Fast Pair card on the phone.
- Follow the actions shown on that card to connect.
If no card appears, the phone may not meet Fast Pair’s requirements, Google Play services may not be current enough, or the earbuds may not be in the state needed for discovery. In any of those cases, use the manual Bluetooth procedure rather than treating the missing card as a pairing failure.

Fast Pair compatibility is narrower than Android compatibility
Nothing identifies Fast Pair as a feature for supported Android devices running Google Play services 11.7 or later, with compatibility back to Android Marshmallow (Android 6.0). That is different from the Ear (open) product’s general Android 5.0-and-later compatibility listing. An Android phone can therefore meet the general operating-system floor and still not offer Fast Pair.
| Capability | Requirement listed by Nothing |
|---|---|
| General Ear (open) Android compatibility | Android 5.0 and later |
| General Ear (open) iPhone compatibility | iOS 13 and later |
| Fast Pair operating-system range | Compatibility back to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) on supported devices |
| Fast Pair services requirement | Google Play services 11.7 or later |
Nothing does not describe Fast Pair as available on every Android phone. If your device does not satisfy the supported-device and services conditions, manual Bluetooth pairing is the appropriate route.
What opening the case does after setup
Nothing’s Ear (open) product page says opening the case triggers a new pairing or a reconnection. After you have completed setup once, opening the case can therefore start the normal reconnect behavior for a phone that already knows the earbuds. If you are connecting to a different phone, use the manual pairing sequence so the earbuds are explicitly placed in pairing mode and visible to that phone.

Bluetooth remembers the devices you have previously connected. If the phone shows Ear (open) in its saved or previously connected list, selecting that entry may reconnect it; if the earbuds are not listed as available, return to the manual pairing sequence instead of repeatedly tapping a stale entry.
Do you need the Nothing X app?
No. Nothing’s documented basic pairing steps do not require Nothing X, and the Bluetooth connection can be completed directly from the phone’s settings.
The app is useful after the initial connection, particularly if you are using a non-Nothing phone and want the additional operations Nothing lists:

Nothing advises updating the app before using it so that its features are current. Treat the app as an optional companion for configuration and maintenance, not as a prerequisite for hearing audio through a normal Bluetooth pairing.
When to install the app
Install Nothing X after Bluetooth pairing if you want those extra controls or update functions. Doing so separates two tasks: first establish the basic wireless connection with the phone’s Bluetooth menu, then use the app for supported settings. If your only goal is ordinary Bluetooth audio, the manual or Fast Pair connection is sufficient.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Ear (open) does not appear in the device list
Nothing’s support instructions provide a specific way to put the earbuds back into discovery mode, but they do not publish a longer Ear (open)-specific failure-recovery sequence in the cited material. Work through the checks below without assuming an undocumented reset procedure.
- Confirm the starting state. Both earbuds should be in the open charging case, and Bluetooth should be enabled on the phone.
- Re-enter pairing mode. Use the manual sequence above: hold the case function button for about three seconds and look for the white blinking indicator described by Nothing.
- Scan again. Return to the phone’s Bluetooth settings and wait for the available-device list to refresh before selecting Ear (open).
- Use manual pairing if you were waiting for Fast Pair. A missing Android prompt does not prove that the earbuds are defective; Fast Pair has separate device and Google Play services requirements.
- Check the platform floor. The product page lists iOS 13 and later and Android 5.0 and later for general compatibility. A phone below those versions is outside the listed specification.
The official support material cited for this process does not specify a reset-button duration, a factory-reset gesture, or an alternative LED pattern for an Ear (open)-specific recovery. Do not substitute a guessed reset timing for the documented three-second pairing action.
When the earbuds appear but will not connect
- Keep the case open while selecting Ear (open), because the documented flow begins with the open case.
- Make sure you are selecting the Ear (open) entry in the phone’s available-device list rather than an unrelated nearby device.
- If an Android Fast Pair card is stalled or absent, leave that route and perform the manual Bluetooth steps.
- After a successful connection, opening the case is the documented trigger for a new pairing or reconnection, so close and reopen the case only as part of a new, deliberate attempt rather than repeatedly pressing random controls.
Platform and setup decisions at a glance
| Situation | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone, first connection | Open the case, hold the case function button for about three seconds, then select Ear (open) in Bluetooth settings | The documented iPhone path is manual Bluetooth pairing |
| Supported Android with a Fast Pair card | Keep the case open and follow the card | Fast Pair is the optional quick setup route |
| Android with no Fast Pair card | Use the manual Bluetooth sequence | Manual pairing is the fallback and does not depend on Fast Pair |
| Earbuds missing from the scan | Return them to pairing mode with the case button, then scan again | Nothing identifies the white blinking indicator as the pairing-mode signal |
| Basic audio works but you want controls or updates | Install or update Nothing X | The app provides optional equaliser, control, firmware, locating, latency and connection features |
Limits of the published instructions
The pairing procedure above is based on Nothing’s general support article titled “How to pair my Nothing Ear or Ear (a) with my phone?” rather than a support page dedicated only to Ear (open). The Ear (open) product page separately confirms that opening the case starts a new pairing or reconnection and lists Google Fast Pair as a feature. Because phone interfaces and firmware can change, a button label or on-screen prompt may look different on a particular model. Follow the current phone screen while preserving the documented sequence: open case, pairing mode, Bluetooth list, and Ear (open) selection.
For the manufacturer’s current materials, see Nothing Support and the Ear (open) product page.
