How to pair heart rate-monitoring earbuds with an iPhone and track a workout (Powerbeats Pro 2)

Powerbeats Pro 2 are the earbuds covered by Apple’s heart-rate-monitoring instructions. Pair them with the iPhone in Bluetooth settings, turn on Heart Rate Sensor in the connected Beats settings, and then start a workout in Apple Fitness or a HealthKit-enabled workout app. The resulting readings can appear in the workout app and in Apple Health. Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds do not gain heart-rate monitoring simply by pairing with an iPhone.

What you need for this setup

This workflow is product-specific. The documented earbud sensor is in Powerbeats Pro 2; the instructions should not be generalized to every wireless earbud that can connect over Bluetooth.

  • An iPhone with Bluetooth switched on.
  • Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds and their charging case.
  • At least one earbud worn during the workout.
  • Apple Fitness or another workout app that supports Apple HealthKit.
  • Health permissions for the workout app if you use a third-party app.

Apple recommends checking the earbuds’ fit and updating their firmware before exercising. A secure, comfortable fit matters because Apple identifies a dimmed heart-rate value or a row of dashes as a poor reading rather than a usable measurement.

Pair Powerbeats Pro 2 with an iPhone

Pairing uses the iPhone’s Bluetooth controls and the Beats setup animation. Keep the earbuds in their case while you begin.

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone.
  2. Switch Bluetooth on if it is off.
  3. Leave the earbuds inside the case, open the case, and hold it next to the iPhone.
  4. Wait for the Powerbeats Pro 2 setup animation to appear.
  5. Follow the prompts shown on the iPhone to finish pairing.

If the setup animation does not appear, remain on the Bluetooth screen and use the manual pairing option shown there. Select the Powerbeats entry when it becomes available and complete the on-screen instructions. Pairing alone establishes the audio connection; it does not, by itself, turn on heart-rate sensing.

Turn on the heart-rate sensor

The sensor is enabled from the settings for the connected Beats device, not from the general Bluetooth switch.

  1. Put at least one Powerbeats Pro 2 earbud in your ear.
  2. Confirm that the earbuds are connected to the iPhone.
  3. Open Settings and tap the Beats name near the top of the screen.
  4. Switch on Heart Rate Sensor.

Before starting the workout, check that the earbud sits securely and that the connection remains active. Apple also recommends making sure the earbuds’ firmware is up to date. The available instructions do not specify a particular firmware version; use the update method offered for your connected Beats device.

Start a workout in Apple Fitness

With the sensor enabled, open Apple Fitness and start the workout type you want to record. As you exercise, heart-rate readings should be available in the workout view when the earbuds have a usable reading.

Wear at least one earbud throughout the session. Heart-rate monitoring pauses when the earbuds are removed and resumes when they are put back in. If you remove both earbuds, expect the monitoring to stop until one is worn again and the connection is restored.

The earbuds do not create a separate workout file of their own. The workout app is the place where the session is started and where the live workout information is displayed.

Use a third-party workout app

A non-Apple workout app must support HealthKit to receive the heart-rate readings through Apple Health. Bluetooth compatibility by itself is not enough.

  1. Pair and connect Powerbeats Pro 2, then enable Heart Rate Sensor in the Beats settings.
  2. Open the third-party app and begin its workout-start flow.
  3. When the app asks for Apple Health access, allow it to read heart-rate data.
  4. Also allow it to read and record workouts in Apple Health if those permissions are requested.
  5. Start the workout and watch the app’s heart-rate field while exercising.

If the app starts a workout but shows no heart rate, check both requirements: the app must be HealthKit-enabled, and the requested Health permissions must have been granted. An app that lacks HealthKit support cannot receive these readings through this workflow, even though the earbuds are paired correctly.

Find the recorded heart-rate data in Apple Health

Apple says workout heart-rate information can be shown by the workout app or in the Health app. To look for heart-rate entries in Health:

  1. Open Health on the iPhone.
  2. Tap Search.
  3. Choose Heart.
  4. Tap Heart Rate.

Powerbeats Pro 2 do not separately record or store heart-rate data. Apple Support states this explicitly in its Powerbeats Pro 2 heart-rate-monitoring guidance. The reading is available through the connected workout and Health workflow rather than as an independent history kept inside the earbuds.

What to do when the reading is missing or dimmed

A row of dashes or a dimmed value indicates that the iPhone does not currently have a good reading. Treat that display as a signal to correct the setup rather than as a heart-rate result.

Check the fit

  • Make sure at least one earbud is actually being worn.
  • Reseat the earbud so it sits securely and maintains contact as you move.
  • Check the fit again if the value disappears during running or another high-motion activity.

Check the connection

  • Confirm that Powerbeats Pro 2 still appear as connected on the iPhone.
  • Keep the earbuds connected to the iPhone rather than another device while you are trying to record the workout.
  • If the connection has dropped, reconnect before starting the workout again.

Check the sensor setting

Return to the connected Beats settings and verify that Heart Rate Sensor is on. Pairing can remain active while the sensor setting is disabled, so checking Bluetooth status alone does not confirm that heart-rate monitoring is enabled.

Check the app permissions

For a third-party app, confirm that it has permission to read heart-rate data and to read and record workouts in Apple Health. Without those permissions, the app may be unable to display or save the readings even when the earbuds are fitted correctly.

Restart the attempt after removing the earbuds

Monitoring pauses when the earbuds are removed and resumes when they are put back in. After reinserting an earbud, give the connection a moment to return before judging the workout display. If the value remains dimmed or shows dashes, check fit and connection again as Apple recommends.

Understand which heart-rate source the iPhone uses

Powerbeats Pro 2 do not always become the selected source simply because they are worn. Apple describes automatic source selection when other monitors are present.

  • If an Apple Watch is also worn, Apple says the highest-confidence heart-rate source is selected automatically.
  • If a third-party monitor, such as a chest strap, is paired, that monitor’s data is prioritized.

Consequently, a workout may be recording heart rate without using the earbuds as the source you expected. If you are diagnosing a discrepancy, check whether an Apple Watch or another paired monitor is present before changing the earbud fit or app permissions.

Use Powerbeats Pro 2 with compatible gym equipment

Apple’s guide also describes a gym-equipment mode. On compatible equipment, select Powerbeats HR as the heart-rate sensor when the machine asks you to choose a source.

The connection has an important trade-off: connecting the earbuds to gym equipment disconnects them from the iPhone, and connecting them to the iPhone disconnects them from the gym equipment. Choose the device that should receive the sensor connection before beginning the session. If you switch destinations, reconnect on the other device rather than assuming both will receive the data simultaneously.

Choose the right workflow for where you want the data

Goal Required path Where to look for the result
Record with Apple’s workout service Pair in Bluetooth, enable Heart Rate Sensor, then start a workout in Apple Fitness The workout view and, where saved, Apple Health under Search > Heart > Heart Rate
Record with a third-party app Use a HealthKit-enabled app and grant permission to read heart rate and read and record workouts The third-party workout screen and Apple Health, subject to the app’s Health integration
Feed compatible gym equipment Select Powerbeats HR on the equipment The equipment’s workout display; the gym connection disconnects the earbuds from the iPhone

The documentation establishes these three destinations but does not establish support for every workout app or every piece of gym equipment. Check that the particular app is HealthKit-enabled and that the particular machine offers the Powerbeats HR sensor option.

Why ordinary Bluetooth earbuds are not enough

Many earbuds can pair with an iPhone for audio, calls, or controls. That Bluetooth relationship does not mean the earbuds contain a heart-rate sensor or can send heart-rate readings to Fitness or Health. The heart-rate instructions described here are for Powerbeats Pro 2.

When evaluating another earbud model, verify all three parts of the workflow before buying or troubleshooting:

  • HYPOALLERGENIC COMFORT: Medical-grade silicone prevents itch/redness. Oval-shaped core distributes pressure evenly – wear all day pain-free.
  • Sensor: the earbuds themselves must have a heart-rate sensor; generic Bluetooth support does not establish this.
  • App path: the workout app must support HealthKit if it is expected to receive heart-rate data through Apple Health.
  • Destination: decide whether you need readings in Apple Fitness, Apple Health, a third-party app, or compatible gym equipment.

The available Apple documentation does not establish heart-rate support for other earbud models, so do not infer compatibility from a model’s ability to pair or play music.

End-to-end setup checklist

Use this order when setting up a first workout:

  1. Charge the earbuds as needed and place them in the case.
  2. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on.
  3. Open the case next to the iPhone and complete the Powerbeats Pro 2 setup animation, or use manual pairing from Bluetooth settings.
  4. Wear at least one earbud and confirm that it is connected.
  5. Open the Beats settings near the top of the iPhone’s Settings app and turn on Heart Rate Sensor.
  6. Check the fit and apply any available firmware update before exercising, following Apple’s recommendation.
  7. Open Apple Fitness, or open a HealthKit-enabled third-party workout app.
  8. If the app is third-party, grant permission to read heart-rate data and to read and record workouts in Apple Health.
  9. Start the workout and confirm that a heart-rate value appears rather than dashes or a dimmed field.
  10. Afterward, review the workout app or open Health > Search > Heart > Heart Rate.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The earbuds never appear during pairing

Make sure the case is open and held next to the iPhone while the earbuds remain inside. Confirm Bluetooth is on. If the automatic setup animation still does not appear, use the manual pairing flow on the Bluetooth settings screen.

The earbuds are connected, but there is no sensor option

Verify that the connected device is Powerbeats Pro 2 and that at least one earbud is being worn. The documented Heart Rate Sensor control belongs in the settings for the connected Beats device. A different Bluetooth earbud model will not gain this control merely by pairing.

Apple Fitness shows no usable value

Check that the sensor switch is on, reseat the earbud, and confirm the connection. Dashes or a dimmed value mean Apple considers the reading poor. If an Apple Watch or another heart-rate monitor is present, remember that Apple may select that source instead.

A third-party app records time but not heart rate

Confirm that the app supports HealthKit and that you granted access to read heart-rate data. Also check permission to read and record workouts in Apple Health. An app can be installed and paired with the earbuds yet still lack the Health access needed to display readings.

The workout stopped receiving readings after removing an earbud

That behavior is expected: monitoring pauses when the earbuds are removed and resumes when they are put back in. Reinsert at least one earbud, verify the connection, and wait for the workout display to show a usable value.

The gym machine and iPhone cannot both use the earbuds

Powerbeats Pro 2 connect to the gym equipment or the iPhone, not both at once in this documented workflow. Select Powerbeats HR on the equipment when that is your intended destination, or reconnect the earbuds to the iPhone when you want the iPhone workout app to receive the connection.

Availability and regional limits

Apple notes that not all features are available in every country or region. If a documented control or destination is missing, regional availability may be a factor in addition to pairing, fit, firmware, or permission problems. The instructions above describe the documented Powerbeats Pro 2 workflow and should not be treated as a guarantee that every feature appears on every iPhone configuration.

What this setup can and cannot do

  • It can connect Powerbeats Pro 2 to an iPhone through Bluetooth and enable the earbuds’ heart-rate sensor.
  • It can provide heart-rate readings to Apple Fitness or a compatible HealthKit-enabled workout app after the required Health permissions are granted.
  • It can make workout heart-rate information available in Apple Health for review at Search > Heart > Heart Rate.
  • It can use compatible gym equipment when the equipment offers the Powerbeats HR sensor option.
  • It does not make ordinary Bluetooth earbuds into heart-rate monitors.
  • It does not leave a separately stored heart-rate history inside the Powerbeats Pro 2 earbuds.

For the cleanest first test, use only the Powerbeats Pro 2 and iPhone, enable the sensor, start Apple Fitness, and confirm a usable value before adding a third-party app, Apple Watch, chest strap, or gym machine. That isolates pairing, sensor, fit, and Health-permission issues in the order they affect the result.
