How to Pair Bluetooth Earbuds With an Android Tablet

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

To pair Bluetooth earbuds with an Android tablet, put the earbuds into their model-specific pairing mode, open the tablet’s Bluetooth settings, choose Pair new device, and tap the earbuds’ name. Confirm the connection when Android lists them as connected. Google Fast Pair can shorten this process for compatible earbuds, but ordinary Bluetooth settings work for the general case and remain the fallback when no Fast Pair notification appears.

Menu names vary among Samsung, Lenovo, Amazon, Pixel and other Android tablets. The labels may also change with the Android version, so look for Bluetooth under Connected devices, Connection preferences or a similarly named section.

What you need before pairing

Pairing succeeds only when both devices are ready to discover each other. Have the earbuds, their charging case if they use one, and the Android tablet nearby.

  • Charge and power on the earbuds. A depleted case or earbud may not enter pairing mode or may disappear from the tablet’s list.
  • Know the earbuds’ pairing control. Depending on the model, you may hold a physical button, touch one or both earbuds, or use a case button. The indicator light and timing are model-specific, so use the earbuds’ manual for the exact gesture.
  • Keep the earbuds close to the tablet. Pairing is most reliable when the devices are next to each other and away from other Bluetooth setup attempts.
  • Pause connections to other devices. Earbuds that are already connected to a phone, computer or television may not advertise themselves to the tablet until you disconnect them or put them back into pairing mode.
  • Turn on the tablet’s Bluetooth. You can do this from Quick Settings or from the full Settings app.

You do not need to buy another pair of earbuds if you already own Bluetooth earbuds. Fast Pair support is an optional convenience, not a requirement for a normal Bluetooth connection.

Pair earbuds through Android Bluetooth settings

This is the universal method and works whether or not the earbuds support Google Fast Pair.

1. Put the earbuds in pairing mode

Follow the earbud manufacturer’s instructions. Usually, you place both earbuds in the case, open the lid, and hold the case button until its light flashes. Other models require holding a button on an earbud or touching both earbuds for several seconds.

A steady light, a flashing light, or an audio prompt can indicate different states. Do not assume that simply removing the earbuds from the case makes them discoverable; many models automatically reconnect to their last device instead. If the earbuds do not appear later, repeat this step and verify the model-specific pairing signal.

2. Open Bluetooth settings on the tablet

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
  2. Touch and hold the Bluetooth tile to open its settings. If the tile is not visible, swipe again to show additional tiles.
  3. Alternatively, open Settings and look for Bluetooth or Connected devices.

On a Pixel Tablet, Google’s documented path is Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Bluetooth. Other tablets can place Bluetooth directly under Connected devices or use a manufacturer-specific label. See Google’s Pixel Tablet Bluetooth instructions for that device’s current menu path.

3. Turn Bluetooth on and scan for devices

Turn on the Bluetooth switch if it is off. Select Pair new device, Pair new device under an available-devices heading, or the equivalent option such as Scan. Android begins looking for nearby discoverable accessories.

Keep the earbuds in pairing mode while the list refreshes. Some tablets show a spinner or a Available devices heading; others add a refresh command in the overflow menu. The general Android procedure is described in Google’s Bluetooth device setup guide.

4. Select the earbuds

Tap the earbuds’ name when it appears. The name may be the model name, a shortened product name, or a name previously assigned by another device. If Android asks you to confirm a pairing request, accept it. A passcode prompt is uncommon for modern earbuds, but if one appears and the manual gives no code, Google’s Android guidance suggests trying 0000 or 1234 as fallback codes; neither is guaranteed to work for every model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Confirm the connection

Wait for the status to change to Connected. The earbuds should then appear under saved or paired devices. Open the Bluetooth entry if you need to see their connection state or available device controls.

After the first successful pairing, you normally do not repeat discovery. When the earbuds are powered on and nearby, select their name under saved devices to reconnect. Google notes that devices remain paired until you explicitly unpair them.

Fast Pair: the optional notification-based route

Google Fast Pair can display a setup notification when a supported accessory is placed in pairing mode near an Android device. It is a shortcut layered on top of Bluetooth, not a different kind of audio connection and not a requirement for compatibility.

Fast Pair requirements and limits

Aspect Standard Bluetooth settings Google Fast Pair
Accessory support Works with ordinary Bluetooth earbuds that can enter pairing mode. Requires earbuds and setup flow that support Fast Pair.
Tablet action Open Bluetooth settings, choose Pair new device, then select the earbuds. Turn on Bluetooth and Location, put the supported accessory in pairing mode nearby, then tap the setup notification.
Notification Not required. Expected when the supported flow is available, but notifications can be disabled or may not appear.
Fallback The normal method itself. Use the ordinary Bluetooth available-devices list if no notification appears.
Audio quality or compatibility Not inherently better or worse based on this setup choice. Fast Pair does not by itself promise higher audio quality; it mainly simplifies discovery and setup.

How to use Fast Pair

  1. Open the tablet’s Quick Settings and turn on Bluetooth.
  2. Turn on Location if the Fast Pair setup asks for it or if the notification does not appear. Google’s Fast Pair instructions include Bluetooth and Location as part of the documented setup.
  3. Put the compatible earbuds into their pairing mode and keep them close to the tablet.
  4. Tap the Fast Pair setup notification, then follow Android’s prompts.
  5. Check Bluetooth settings to verify that the earbuds show as connected.

Google documents the Fast Pair accessory flow for Android 6.0 and later, while another Android Help page notes that some Fast Pair steps work only on Android 10 and later. Treat those as requirements for particular Fast Pair functions, not as a universal version rule for every accessory or feature. If there is no notification, notifications may be disabled, the earbuds may not support Fast Pair, or the tablet may not meet that accessory’s requirements. Open Bluetooth settings and pair manually instead.

Pair AirPods with an Android tablet

AirPods can pair as Bluetooth earbuds with an Android tablet, although Apple-device features may not be available after the connection. The setup is specific to AirPods and should not be treated as the procedure for every earbud model.

  1. Place the AirPods in their charging case.
  2. Open the case lid.
  3. Use the case control to enter pairing mode until the status light flashes. The exact control can vary by AirPods generation, so use the model’s instructions if the light does not flash.
  4. On the tablet, open Settings → Bluetooth or the equivalent Connected devices path.
  5. Choose Pair new device and tap the AirPods name.
  6. Confirm that Android lists them as connected.

Google’s AirPods and Android guidance explicitly warns that some functionality available with Apple devices may not be supported on Android. Basic Bluetooth audio pairing can work even when platform-specific features do not.

If the earbuds do not appear in the device list

Work through these checks in order. The first three solve most discovery failures.

Check pairing mode, not just power

Earbuds can be switched on without being discoverable. Return them to the model-specific pairing mode and look for the correct flashing indicator or voice prompt. If they immediately reconnect to another device, disconnect that device first or follow the earbud manual’s instructions for switching devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify Bluetooth and refresh the scan

Confirm that Bluetooth is on in the tablet’s settings. Turn Bluetooth off, wait a moment, turn it on again, and reopen Pair new device. If the screen has a refresh control, use it while the earbuds remain in pairing mode.

Charge the earbuds and case

Low power can prevent the pairing signal from starting or can stop it before the tablet finishes scanning. Charge the case and earbuds, then repeat the pairing-mode procedure.

Move the devices close together

Place the earbuds beside the tablet during setup. Remove unnecessary distance and avoid starting several Bluetooth pairings at once. Once Android reports a connection, you can return the devices to normal use.

Restart both devices

Restart the tablet and power-cycle the earbuds according to their manual. Then turn Bluetooth back on, put the earbuds into pairing mode, and scan again. Google’s Android Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance recommends toggling Bluetooth and restarting devices when a connection does not work.

Look under saved devices

If the earbuds were paired to this tablet before, they may not appear under new devices. Open the saved or previously connected devices section and tap the earbuds’ name to reconnect. A saved pairing can remain available even when the earbuds are not shown in the initial discovery list.

Resolve a connection to another device

Many earbuds reconnect automatically to the last phone, computer or television they used. Temporarily disable Bluetooth on that other device or disconnect the earbuds there, then place the earbuds into pairing mode again. The exact method for switching between devices is model-specific; consult the earbud manual rather than assuming one universal button sequence.

Handle a passcode request

If Android requests a PIN and the earbud documentation does not state one, try 0000 or 1234. These are general fallback suggestions, not universal codes. If neither works, the manufacturer’s manual is the authoritative source for that model.

Check whether another tablet user changed Bluetooth

On a shared Android tablet, each user can change Bluetooth settings. Switch to the user profile that is trying to connect, verify Bluetooth is enabled there, and inspect that profile’s saved-device list. Google’s general Android help notes that Bluetooth settings may be changed by each user on a shared device.

What to do after pairing

Reconnect without pairing again

Turn on the earbuds, keep them within range, and open the tablet’s Bluetooth settings. Select the earbuds under saved or paired devices. Pairing is the one-time trust step; reconnecting uses that saved relationship.

Unpair only when you need a clean setup

If the tablet keeps trying to use an incorrect or stale connection, remove or unpair the earbuds from the tablet’s Bluetooth device list, then repeat the full pairing procedure. The wording for removal differs by Android version and manufacturer, so look for the device’s settings icon or an Unpair, Forget or equivalent command.

Keep expectations realistic across platforms

Bluetooth audio can work across Android and other platforms, but companion features are not guaranteed. AirPods are the clearest example in Google’s documentation: pairing is supported, while some Apple-specific functions may not be. Fast Pair support is likewise accessory-specific and should not be confused with ordinary Bluetooth support.

Additional pairing scenarios

What if the tablet uses a different menu?

Do not search for one exact wording. Android manufacturers can label the same control Bluetooth, Connected devices, Connection preferences, Pair new device or Available devices. Start in Settings, use the Settings search field for “Bluetooth” if one is available, or touch and hold the Bluetooth tile in Quick Settings. The important sequence is to enable Bluetooth, open the nearby-device list and select the earbuds while they are discoverable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do earbuds have to support Fast Pair?

No. Fast Pair is an optional accessory feature. Any compatible Bluetooth earbuds that can enter their own pairing mode can normally be selected from Android’s Bluetooth settings. Fast Pair only changes how the setup prompt is presented. It does not determine whether the earbuds can produce better sound, and its absence does not mean the earbuds are incompatible.

What does “paired” mean compared with “connected”?

Pairing saves the relationship between the tablet and earbuds. A device can remain paired even when the earbuds are in their case or turned off. Connected means the earbuds are currently available to the tablet. When a previously paired set is nearby and powered on, selecting it under saved devices reconnects it without repeating the discovery process.

Why might Fast Pair be missing even when Bluetooth works?

The earbuds may not support Fast Pair, the tablet may not meet a particular Fast Pair requirement, or notifications may be disabled. Google’s documented flow also uses Location. Do not keep waiting for the pop-up: open Bluetooth settings, choose Pair new device and complete setup manually.

Can another person use the same tablet?

On a shared tablet, users can change Bluetooth settings. The profile that is pairing should check its own Bluetooth switch and saved-device list. If another profile previously changed the setting, switch profiles or enable Bluetooth for the current user before scanning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard Bluetooth or Fast Pair?

Choose the route that matches your situation:

  • Use standard Bluetooth settings when the earbuds do not advertise Fast Pair, the notification is missing, notifications are disabled, or you want the most predictable procedure across tablet brands.
  • Use Fast Pair when the earbuds support it, Bluetooth and Location are enabled, and you want a nearby setup notification rather than navigating the device list.
  • Switch to manual pairing immediately if the Fast Pair prompt does not appear. Waiting for a notification is unnecessary; the earbuds can still be paired from Pair new device.

Both routes produce a saved Bluetooth pairing when successful. Fast Pair changes how setup starts; it does not make Bluetooth earbuds mandatory, improve their audio quality, or replace the earbuds’ own pairing-mode control.

Quick checklist

  • Earbuds and case are charged.
  • Earbuds are in the correct, model-specific pairing mode.
  • Tablet Bluetooth is on.
  • Pair new device or the equivalent scan command is open.
  • Earbuds are close to the tablet and not connected elsewhere.
  • The correct device name was selected.
  • Android shows Connected.
  • If Fast Pair was expected, Location is on and notifications are allowed; otherwise use manual Bluetooth pairing.

For official Android procedures, see Google’s Bluetooth setup guide, Pixel Tablet Bluetooth instructions, Fast Pair help, Bluetooth troubleshooting steps and AirPods connection guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pair Bluetooth earbuds with an Android tablet without Fast Pair?

Yes. Put the earbuds into their model-specific pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth, open Pair new device and select the earbuds. Fast Pair is optional; manual Bluetooth settings are the general method.

Why are my earbuds powered on but not visible?

Power does not always mean discoverable. Put the earbuds back into pairing mode, check for the correct flashing light or voice prompt, keep them close to the tablet and make sure they are not connected to another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to turn on Location to pair Bluetooth earbuds?

Not for ordinary Bluetooth pairing. Location is part of Google’s documented Fast Pair setup, so enable it when using Fast Pair or when its notification does not appear. You can still pair manually through Bluetooth settings.

How do I reconnect earbuds I paired before?

Open Bluetooth settings and select the earbuds under saved, paired or previously connected devices. You normally do not need to choose Pair new device again unless you unpaired them.

Can AirPods connect to an Android tablet?

Yes, as Bluetooth earbuds. Put them in the case, open the lid, enter pairing mode with the case control, then select them in Android Bluetooth settings. Some Apple-specific features may not be supported.

What PIN should I try if Android asks for one?

If the earbud manual does not specify a code, Google’s general Android guidance suggests trying 0000 or 1234. These are fallback suggestions, not guaranteed universal PINs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did Fast Pair not show a notification?

Notifications may be disabled, the earbuds may not support Fast Pair, or the tablet may not meet a requirement for that accessory. Turn on Bluetooth and Location as applicable, then use Pair new device manually.

Will pairing work on a shared Android tablet?

Bluetooth settings can be changed by each tablet user. Check the active user profile’s Bluetooth switch and saved-device list before scanning, especially if another user previously changed the connection.

The Bottom Line

Put the earbuds into their own pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth, choose Pair new device, and select them. Fast Pair is a convenient optional notification, not a requirement. If the earbuds do not appear, charge them, disconnect other devices, refresh Bluetooth, restart both devices and try again.
