How to Pair and Update a Wireless Controller on Nintendo Switch 2

To pair a controller with Nintendo Switch 2, attach a Joy-Con 2 while the console is on, connect a Switch 2 Pro Controller by USB, or open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. To update firmware, update the console first, then go to System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers with the controller powered on and paired.

The exact pairing flow depends on whether you are using Joy-Con 2 or the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, and Joy-Con 2 needs one additional choice: whether the controllers will be held together or used horizontally on their own.

Pairing methods at a glance

Controller Fastest connection Wireless method Extra choice
Joy-Con 2 Attach it to the powered-on console Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then hold SYNC for at least one second Choose a dual-controller grip or horizontal solo use on the pairing screen
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller (BEE-008) Connect it by USB to the console or dock Controllers > Change Grip/Order, then hold SYNC for at least one second None

After pairing, one or more player LEDs should remain lit. An unlit LED means the controller is disconnected or has lost its connection; repeated sequential flashing means it is trying to connect. Flashing can also indicate a very low battery.

Choose the route that matches your situation. Attachment is usually simplest for Joy-Con 2, while USB is a convenient first connection for a Pro Controller. The wireless SYNC route is useful when the controller is already charged and you want to connect it without a cable. Pairing and firmware maintenance are separate operations, so a controller that works in a game can still have an update waiting.

Before you pair: quick checks

  • Turn on the Switch 2 console before attaching Joy-Con 2 or starting the Change Grip/Order process.
  • Charge the controller. A very low battery can make the LEDs flash and can interrupt pairing or an update.
  • Install the latest console system update before troubleshooting or updating controller firmware.
  • If you use Bluetooth audio, remember that wireless controllers are limited to two players while that audio device is connected.
  • Keep the controller close to the console during the initial connection and while firmware is being installed.

These checks do not replace the pairing steps. They simply prevent common cases in which a controller is powered off, too low on charge, or blocked by the console’s current wireless-controller limit.

How do I pair Joy-Con 2 to Nintendo Switch 2?

Option 1: Attach Joy-Con 2 to the console

  1. Turn on Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Slide the Joy-Con 2 onto the matching rails on the console.
  3. Wait for the console to recognize the attached controller.

Nintendo says attached Joy-Con 2 are ready to use. The attachment also pairs each Joy-Con wirelessly, so you can detach it and continue using it wirelessly afterward without repeating the pairing process. This makes attachment the most direct setup for a new pair: connect each side, allow the console to recognize it, and then detach when you want a wireless layout.

Attached Joy-Con 2 do not count against the console’s connected-controller limit. Once detached, each left or right Joy-Con 2 counts as one wireless controller. That distinction matters when several players are joining.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 2: Pair Joy-Con 2 wirelessly with SYNC

  1. Turn on the console and open Controllers > Change Grip/Order from the HOME Menu.
  2. On the Joy-Con 2 you want to pair, press and hold the SYNC button for at least one second. Repeat for the other Joy-Con if you are pairing a pair.
  3. Wait for the player LED or LEDs to stop the connection animation and remain lit.
  4. Follow the on-screen button prompt to tell the console how the Joy-Con 2 will be held.

The SYNC button starts wireless pairing when held for the required time. A brief press has a different function: it temporarily disconnects a paired wireless controller. Press any button afterward to reconnect it. Do not substitute a quick tap for the one-second hold when you are trying to add a controller.

Choose a dual-controller grip

If the two Joy-Con 2 controllers will be held together as one gamepad, press the button combination shown on the screen. Depending on the controller orientation, the prompt uses the indicated L/R or ZL/ZR buttons. The console uses this confirmation to register the two Joy-Con as one dual-controller grip.

Pairing both Joy-Con does not itself tell the console that they will be held together. Complete the grip prompt even if the LEDs already show that both controllers are connected. If the prompt times out or the wrong buttons are pressed, return to Change Grip/Order and repeat the confirmation.

Use each Joy-Con 2 horizontally as a solo controller

For two-player games in which each person holds one Joy-Con 2 sideways, press SL + SR on each Joy-Con 2 intended for horizontal use. Complete the prompt for both controllers. Pairing the Joy-Con to the console alone does not determine whether they will be held together or separately; the grip confirmation is a separate step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the on-screen prompt as the authority for the required button combination. The horizontal arrangement is not selected by pairing one Joy-Con and leaving the other unpaired; each controller intended for play must be paired and confirmed in the appropriate orientation.

How do I pair the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller?

Nintendo identifies the official Switch 2 Pro Controller as model BEE-008. It supports both a wired USB pairing route and wireless pairing.

USB pairing

  1. Turn on Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Connect the Pro Controller to the console or to the dock with a USB cable.
  3. Wait for the console to recognize the controller.
  4. After it is recognized, you can disconnect the cable and use the controller wirelessly if it has charge.

USB pairing is useful when the controller is new, has not connected recently, or you want to avoid navigating the wireless pairing screen. It also gives you a direct recovery route if wireless pairing is not appearing. The controller still needs to be powered and recognized before you attempt a firmware update.

Connecting through the dock is supported as well as connecting directly to the console. USB is a pairing method, not a requirement for every later session: once recognized and charged, the Pro Controller can be used wirelessly.

  • Built-in motion controls for immersive gameplay

Wireless pairing with SYNC

  1. Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order on the HOME Menu.
  2. Press and hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
  3. Wait for the player LED to remain lit, then press a button to confirm it responds in the game or HOME Menu.

If the controller does not appear, keep it near the console, make sure it has charge, and repeat the Change Grip/Order step before holding SYNC again. A one-second hold is the pairing command; a short press later is used to temporarily disconnect and then reconnect the controller.

How can I tell whether the controller is connected?

LED behavior What it generally indicates What to do
One or more player LEDs remain lit The controller is connected Use the controller normally
LEDs are unlit The controller is disconnected or the connection was lost Press a button, repeat pairing, or check battery level
LEDs flash in sequence repeatedly The console and controller are attempting to connect Wait briefly; if it continues, open Change Grip/Order and pair again
LEDs flash while the controller is otherwise unresponsive The battery may be very low Charge the controller, then retry pairing

A solid player LED confirms the wireless link, but it does not confirm the controller’s firmware is current. Firmware status is handled separately in System Settings. Conversely, an update screen cannot fix a controller that is not powered on or paired; establish the connection first.

How do I update a Switch 2 controller?

Controller updates are installed from the console, not from the Change Grip/Order screen. Update the console’s system software first, then update each paired controller.

  1. Connect Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet and install the latest available system update.
  2. Make sure the controller you want to update is powered on and paired with the console.
  3. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  4. Select Controllers & Accessories.
  5. Select Update Controllers.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions and leave the controller powered on while the update runs.

If several controllers are paired, Nintendo Support states: “If multiple controllers are paired to the console, the controllers will be updated one controller at a time.” Select or reconnect the desired controller and repeat the process for the others after the first update finishes. Do not expect a group of paired Joy-Con or Pro Controllers to update simultaneously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same settings path applies whether you paired by attaching Joy-Con 2, by USB, or with SYNC. The connection route changes how the controller is recognized; it does not create a separate firmware-update menu.

If an update stops or does not complete

Return to System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers and retry the update step. Confirm that the controller is still powered on and paired. If it disconnected, pair it again through Change Grip/Order or by USB for the Pro Controller, then start Update Controllers again.

If multiple controllers are present, finish or retry the current controller before selecting another. A stopped update is a reason to repeat the update command, not to assume the controller is permanently unusable. Keep the console and controller powered during the retry and check the LED state if the screen no longer sees the controller.

Do not assume that a controller is updated merely because it pairs successfully. Pairing establishes a connection; the Update Controllers command checks and installs controller firmware.

How many wireless controllers can Switch 2 use?

Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can be paired or connected in most circumstances. The practical number can vary according to controller type, controller features, software, and local communication conditions. “Up to eight” is therefore a general ceiling, not a guarantee that every game or combination of accessories will support eight active players.

Situation How Nintendo describes it
Detached Joy-Con 2 Each detached left or right Joy-Con 2 counts as one controller
Joy-Con 2 attached to the console Attached controllers do not count against the connected-controller limit
Bluetooth audio connected Wireless controllers are limited to two players
Bluetooth audio disconnected The usual controller limit can apply, subject to controller type, software, and other conditions

If a third wireless player cannot join while Bluetooth headphones or another Bluetooth audio device is connected, disconnect the audio device and try pairing again. The two-player Bluetooth-audio limit is separate from whether the controllers themselves are charged or already paired.

Detached Joy-Con count individually even when they were originally paired as a dual-controller grip. That means four detached Joy-Con can represent four wireless controllers, while a Joy-Con attached to the console is outside the connected-controller count.

Do I need a Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip?

No. The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010, is an optional accessory sold separately. It provides another way to charge and pair Joy-Con 2 through the dock, but ordinary wireless pairing and firmware updates do not require it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For standard pairing, attach Joy-Con 2 to the powered-on console or use Controllers > Change Grip/Order with the SYNC button. For updates, use System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers while the Joy-Con is powered on and paired. Buying the grip is therefore a convenience choice for charging and dock-based pairing, not a prerequisite for the controller’s basic functions.

Why won’t my Joy-Con 2 connect?

Start with the system update

Check that Nintendo Switch 2 has the latest system update before trying more involved fixes. Nintendo’s pairing guidance places this check early because controller pairing and firmware behavior depend on the console software.

Pair again from Change Grip/Order

  1. Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order.
  2. Hold the Joy-Con 2 SYNC button for at least one second.
  3. Wait for the player LED to settle on a connected state.
  4. Complete the grip prompt with L/R, ZL/ZR, or SL + SR, depending on how the controller will be used.

If the controller was already paired but stopped responding, briefly press SYNC once, then press another button to reconnect. A brief SYNC press is not the same as the one-second press used to start pairing. If the LEDs remain unlit, charge the controller and repeat the process.

Clear stored wireless-controller pairings

To remove the console’s wireless controller pairing information, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Disconnect Controllers. After disconnecting, pair the controllers again through Change Grip/Order. This is a full clearing step, so previously paired wireless controllers will need to be connected again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Disconnect Controllers deliberately. It is broader than pressing SYNC once on one controller: the individual SYNC action temporarily breaks and restores one controller’s connection, while Disconnect Controllers clears the console’s stored wireless-controller pairing information.

Check the docked setup only when relevant

Nintendo’s Joy-Con troubleshooting also calls out the dock’s Ultra High Speed HDMI cable in the relevant docked troubleshooting path. If the problem occurs specifically while using the dock, check that cable and reconnect it as directed. After changing the cable, open Controllers > Change Grip Order and press SYNC to reconnect. The HDMI check is a docked-use troubleshooting branch, not a universal explanation for every wireless pairing failure.

Why won’t my Switch 2 Pro Controller connect or update?

Verify charge and pairing

Make sure the Pro Controller is charged and that it is actually paired. If it is not listed or its player LED does not settle, connect it by USB to the console or dock, or pair it wirelessly from Controllers > Change Grip/Order with a one-second SYNC press.

Update the controller firmware

Once the controller is paired, use System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. Nintendo recommends keeping controller firmware current as part of Pro Controller troubleshooting. If the command stops, retry it rather than leaving the controller in an unverified state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset the Pro Controller connection

  1. Press the Pro Controller’s SYNC button once.
  2. Press another button on the controller.
  3. If it does not reconnect, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second to pair again.

This reset sequence is distinct from clearing all controller pairing information in Disconnect Controllers. Use the individual SYNC reset first; clear all pairings only when you need to start over with every wireless controller.

A reliable order for pairing and updating

When you are setting up a new controller or diagnosing an intermittent connection, use this order so each step tests a different part of the process:

  • Experience the thrill of the race with the Grand Prix Mario design

  • Built-in motion controls for immersive gameplay
  1. Install the latest Nintendo Switch 2 system update.
  2. Charge the controller or connect the Pro Controller by USB.
  3. Pair the controller using attachment, USB, or the wireless SYNC method for its model.
  4. Confirm a solid player LED.
  5. For Joy-Con 2, complete the dual-grip or horizontal-solo button prompt.
  6. Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers.
  7. If more than one controller is paired, update them individually because updates run one controller at a time.
  8. If pairing fails, repeat Change Grip/Order, use the brief-SYNC reconnect step, and then clear pairings through Disconnect Controllers only if necessary.

This sequence separates physical connection, wireless pairing, grip selection, and firmware maintenance. A controller can pass one of these stages and still need attention at another. For example, a solid LED proves a connection but not current firmware, while a successful firmware check does not choose whether two Joy-Con will be held together or horizontally.

Frequently asked questions

For Joy-Con 2, attach it to the powered-on console or open Controllers > Change Grip/Order and hold SYNC for at least one second. For the Switch 2 Pro Controller, connect it by USB to the console or dock, or use the same Change Grip/Order and one-second SYNC method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I update my Switch 2 controller?

Update the console first. Then power on and pair the controller, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers, and follow the prompts. Paired controllers update one at a time.

Why won’t my Joy-Con connect?

Check the latest console update and charge level, then pair again from Change Grip/Order with a one-second SYNC hold. If it was paired but stopped responding, press SYNC once and then another button. If necessary, clear all stored pairings through System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Disconnect Controllers and pair again.

Do I need the Charging Grip to pair or update Joy-Con 2?

No. The BEE-010 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is optional. Joy-Con 2 can pair by attachment or the wireless SYNC process, and firmware updates use the console’s Update Controllers menu.

Why can’t a third wireless player connect?

Bluetooth audio limits wireless controllers to two players. Disconnect the Bluetooth audio device and try pairing the third controller again. Also remember that each detached Joy-Con 2 counts as one controller and that the normal maximum is up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances, subject to controller type, software, features, and local conditions.
