Pair Joy-Con 2 with Nintendo Switch 2
First registration by attaching the controller
The simplest first registration is physical attachment. Slide the Joy-Con 2 onto the Switch 2. The console registers the controller as it connects, after which you can remove it for wireless play. This method is useful when the controller has never been registered to that console or when wireless discovery is not finding it.

- From the HOME Menu, open Controllers.
- Select Change Grip/Order.
- On the Joy-Con 2 you want to use, press L + R at the same time.
- Wait for the registration confirmation, then follow the on-screen instructions for additional controllers.
For a single Joy-Con 2 held horizontally, press SL + SR instead of L + R. The horizontal procedure is the one to use when one Joy-Con is acting as an individual player controller.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When the wrong Joy-Con connects first
Connection order can be corrected without turning the console off. Briefly press the SYNC button on the incorrectly connected Joy-Con 2. That interrupts its communication with the console. Then press L + R on the Joy-Con 2 that should be registered. For a horizontal single Joy-Con, use SL + SR. Nintendo’s instruction is to use a brief SYNC press to interrupt the wrong controller, not to hold the button indefinitely.
When wireless recognition fails
If the controller does not appear in the Change Grip/Order screen, briefly press its SYNC button several times. Nintendo says this temporarily disconnects the controller. Press A, B, X, Y, or any direction button to reconnect it. Return to the registration screen and register it again if the console still does not show it as available.
Charge Joy-Con 2 correctly
Charging from the Switch 2
Attach the Joy-Con 2 to a Switch 2 that is either powered on or in sleep mode. The console can charge an attached controller in those states. A Switch 2 that is fully powered off does not charge attached Joy-Con 2, even if the console is sitting in its dock. If the battery is empty, wake or power on the console before concluding that the controller or cable has failed.
Using the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
The standard Joy-Con 2 grip included with the console cannot charge the controllers. For charging while the Joy-Con 2 is held in a grip, use the separately sold official Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, which charges the attached controllers and includes a USB charging cable. Confirm that the cable is connected correctly and that the charging indication appears before leaving the controller to charge.

If a Joy-Con 2 still will not charge
- Attach it to a Switch 2 that is powered on or asleep, rather than a powered-off console.
- Check the console’s charging or battery indication and make sure the controller is fully seated on the rail.
- If using the Charging Grip, verify the USB-C connection and try the included cable again.
- Test the controller while attached directly to the console. If it works attached but will not charge or communicate separately, continue with the SYNC and registration procedure.
- If there is still no charging indication or response, Nintendo directs users to service the affected hardware.
Fix Joy-Con 2 stick drift and motion problems
Update before calibrating
For an on-screen character that moves without input, an aim that wanders, or motion controls that do not respond correctly, first update the Switch 2. Calibration is less useful when the console software itself is not current.
Calibrate the control sticks
- Open System Settings on the Switch 2.
- Select Controllers and Accessories.
- Choose Calibrate Control Sticks.
- Select the affected Joy-Con 2 and follow the on-screen movement and confirmation prompts.
Calibration addresses the console’s interpretation of stick input; it does not prove that a worn or damaged physical stick has been repaired. If the symptom remains after calibration, continue to the direct-attachment test and service path.
Calibrate the gyro
Use the gyro calibration option in Controllers and Accessories when motion aiming or other gyro-controlled input is inaccurate. Keep the controller still in the position requested by the on-screen instructions while calibration runs. A stick problem and a gyro problem are separate: calibrate the sticks for unwanted directional movement and the gyro for unwanted motion input.

Nintendo also recommends deregistering the controller and attaching the Joy-Con 2 directly to the console as a diagnostic test. If input is normal while attached but unreliable wirelessly, focus on registration and radio interference. If the same drift or motion fault appears while attached, software calibration has not resolved the underlying controller problem and service is the appropriate next step.

Pair the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
Wireless registration
- Open the HOME Menu and select Controllers.
- Choose Change Grip/Order.
- On the Pro Controller, hold the SYNC button until the player LEDs sequence.
- Wait for the registration confirmation on the Switch 2.
Holding SYNC for this registration step is different from the brief SYNC presses used to recover a controller that has stopped responding.
Register and play over USB-C
Connect the Pro Controller to the Switch 2 with a USB-C cable. A direct cable connection registers the controller and automatically provides wired communication. A connection through the dock can also register and charge it. When you move the controller to a different Switch 2, register it with that console again rather than assuming the earlier console’s registration carries over.
Charging time and indicator
Nintendo lists approximately three hours for a full charge on its current support page checked in 2026. The charging lamp remains lit while the controller is charging and turns off when charging is complete. The three-hour figure is an approximate full-charge time, not a guaranteed time for every battery condition or power source.
Troubleshoot a Switch 2 Pro Controller that will not connect
No controller appears in Change Grip/Order
- Briefly press the Pro Controller’s SYNC button several times.
- Press a face button or a direction button to wake and reconnect it.
- Charge the controller and confirm the charging lamp behaves normally.
- Open HOME > Controllers > Change Grip/Order and register it again.
- Restart the Switch 2 if it is still absent, then repeat the registration.
If wireless registration remains unsuccessful, connect the controller by USB-C to register it directly. This also distinguishes a wireless-discovery problem from a controller that cannot communicate at all.

Connection drops or input is intermittent
Reduce radio and physical interference before replacing hardware. Move the console away from microwave ovens and cordless phones, take it out of a metal rack, and remove any unlicensed cover from the controller or console. Then perform the brief SYNC-and-button recovery and register again. These steps address the environmental causes Nintendo identifies for intermittent wireless communication.
The controller worked on another console
Registration is console-specific for practical troubleshooting purposes. Register the Pro Controller again whenever you move it to another Switch 2. A USB-C connection or the dock can perform that registration, after which you can test wireless operation from the Change Grip/Order screen.
It charges but still does not respond
Charging alone does not complete registration. After the charging lamp indicates power, use the brief SYNC presses, press a face or direction button, and register from Change Grip/Order. If the controller remains unrecognized after a restart and both wired and wireless attempts, stop repeated pairing attempts and use Nintendo’s service process.

What is and is not compatible with the original Nintendo Switch?
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. This is a compatibility limitation, not a pairing sequence that can be fixed by pressing SYNC longer. If you need a controller for the older console, use hardware that Nintendo identifies as compatible with that console.

Legacy Switch controllers have limited support on Switch 2, so compatibility should be checked for the specific controller and function rather than assumed. The procedures in this guide establish how to register Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller with Switch 2; they do not turn the Switch 2 Pro Controller into an original-Switch controller.
When to stop troubleshooting and request service
Use Nintendo Service Center inspection when the controller will not charge, cannot be registered after the reset and registration steps, or continues to show a hardware fault after calibration and direct-attachment testing. For a Pro Controller, include the relevant USB-C cable, dock or adapter when those accessories are part of the charging or connection chain. For a Joy-Con 2, send the affected controller and any relevant charging accessory so the failure can be reproduced.
Before shipping hardware, note which symptom remains, whether the controller works while attached, whether a charging lamp or console icon appears, and which registration method you tried. That information separates a charging fault, a wireless-registration fault and an input fault for the service technician without requiring you to keep repeating unsuccessful pairing attempts.

Quick Recap
Practical setup habits that prevent repeat failures
- Register each controller from Change Grip/Order when setting up a multiplayer session instead of pressing buttons randomly and accepting the first order shown.
- Use SL + SR whenever one Joy-Con 2 is held horizontally; use L + R for the usual paired Joy-Con registration.
- Keep a Joy-Con 2 attached to a powered-on or sleeping Switch 2 when it needs to charge, or use the dedicated Charging Grip rather than the non-charging standard grip.
- For the Pro Controller, keep a USB-C cable available: wired registration is a useful recovery path when wireless discovery fails.
- Keep the console clear of metal racks and strong nearby sources of radio interference, and remove unlicensed covers during diagnosis.
- Update the Switch 2 before diagnosing Joy-Con 2 stick or gyro behavior, then calibrate the relevant input instead of treating every movement problem as a pairing failure.
