What you need before pairing
A Chromebook can connect to a Bluetooth mouse when the Chromebook supports Bluetooth and the mouse is compatible. The mouse must be powered, sufficiently charged, discoverable, and actively in pairing mode. Bluetooth being switched on is not enough if the mouse is still connected to another computer or has not been placed in its pairing state.
Recommended Free Tools
Google’s Chromebook Help describes the basic requirement this way: before pairing, Bluetooth must be turned on, the device must be discoverable, and it must be in pairing mode. Read the instructions supplied with the mouse for the exact button or switch sequence, because there is no universal pairing control for every mouse model. See Google’s instructions for connecting Bluetooth devices to a Chromebook.

Check that the Chromebook has Bluetooth
- Turn on the Chromebook and sign in.
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner to open the status area.
- Look for Bluetooth. If it is present, the Chromebook exposes Bluetooth controls. If it is not present, check the Chromebook manufacturer’s specifications or support for your exact model before troubleshooting the mouse.
Do not assume that every ChromeOS device has identical hardware. The Bluetooth control must be available on the particular Chromebook you are using.
Prepare the mouse
- Charge the mouse fully, or replace its batteries if the model uses replaceable batteries.
- Turn the mouse on.
- Disconnect it from another nearby computer, tablet, or phone if it is already connected there.
- Use the mouse maker’s instructions to activate Bluetooth pairing or discovery mode. A blinking indicator may be used by some models, but do not rely on a particular light pattern unless the mouse documentation specifies it.
- Keep the mouse close to the Chromebook during the first pairing attempt.
Understand the mouse’s connection choices
Some mice offer more than one connection method, such as Bluetooth and a USB receiver, or several stored Bluetooth channels. Select the Bluetooth channel when you want the Chromebook’s built-in Bluetooth connection. A USB receiver is a different connection path and will not make the mouse appear in the Chromebook’s Bluetooth device list.
If the mouse has a channel button, use the channel assigned to Bluetooth and then activate pairing on that channel. If it was recently used with another device, disconnect or switch that device off temporarily so it does not capture the mouse as soon as it powers on. The exact controls are model-specific, so the mouse maker’s manual remains the authority for the sequence.
How to pair the mouse step by step
1. Turn on Chromebook Bluetooth
Select the time in the bottom-right corner, then select Bluetooth and turn it on. Leave the Bluetooth controls available while you prepare the mouse so you can immediately start discovery.
2. Put the mouse in pairing mode
Activate pairing mode using the mouse’s own instructions. The Chromebook can only list a mouse that is discoverable. If the mouse has several connection channels, choose its Bluetooth channel rather than a USB receiver or another wireless mode. If the mouse was previously paired, you may need to hold its pairing button again to make it discoverable.
Start pairing mode immediately before searching. Many devices stop advertising after a period of time, so putting the mouse into that state and then waiting several minutes on an old search screen can make it seem invisible. If the mouse disappears, switch it off and on, activate pairing again, and start a fresh search.
3. Start a new device search
- Open the Chromebook status area by selecting the time.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Select + Pair new device.
- Wait for nearby devices to appear, then select the mouse’s name.
- Follow any on-screen instructions. If ChromeOS displays a PIN prompt, check the mouse documentation and the prompt carefully instead of guessing.
The name shown may be a model name, a shortened product name, or a name assigned by the manufacturer. If several nearby devices appear, identify the mouse by its documented name and avoid selecting an unfamiliar device.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Confirm the connection
Open the Bluetooth area again and look under Currently connected. The mouse should be listed there. Move it across a surface and confirm that the pointer responds. If it is listed under previously connected devices rather than currently connected, switch the mouse off and on nearby; a saved, supported mouse may reconnect automatically.
Do not treat a name appearing in the search results as proof that pairing is complete. Detection only means the Chromebook can see an advertising device. The useful confirmation is a completed connection followed by a responsive pointer and an entry under Currently connected.

How automatic reconnection and saved pairings work
Google states that previously connected non-audio devices, including Bluetooth keyboards and mice, connect automatically when they are turned on and near the Chromebook. That behavior applies to a saved pairing; it does not replace the first-time pairing process. Keep the mouse powered on and close to the Chromebook when you want it to reconnect.
Automatic reconnection can fail if the mouse is still connected to another device, is on the wrong stored channel, has insufficient charge, or is too far away. Put it on the correct Bluetooth channel, bring it next to the Chromebook, and power-cycle it. If it remains listed as previously connected but never becomes active, use the fresh pairing procedure instead of repeatedly waiting for an automatic connection.

To manage a saved mouse, open Settings, select Bluetooth, and choose the mouse entry under the connected or previously connected devices list. Depending on the ChromeOS interface, you can use the available device-management option or Forget control. Forgetting removes the saved relationship, so you will need to use + Pair new device again.
Troubleshoot a mouse that does not appear
If the mouse never shows in the list of nearby devices, the problem is usually discovery, power, Bluetooth availability, or a pairing attempt that was started too late.
Check the Chromebook first
- Open the status area by selecting the time and confirm that Bluetooth is on.
- Open Bluetooth and choose + Pair new device again rather than waiting on an old search screen.
- Keep the Chromebook awake and close to the mouse during the search.
- If Bluetooth is missing from the status area, verify support for the exact Chromebook model with its manufacturer.
Check the mouse’s state
- Charge the mouse completely and turn it on.
- Place it in active pairing mode immediately before selecting + Pair new device.
- Follow the model-specific instructions for making it discoverable. Simply moving the power switch to “on” may not activate pairing mode.
- Move the mouse away from another computer or phone that could capture its connection.
- If it has a channel selector, choose Bluetooth rather than a receiver or a different saved channel.
Google’s general Bluetooth guidance also calls for checking that the device is supported and fully charged. Read the full troubleshooting guidance at Google Chromebook Help’s hardware and system troubleshooting page.
Retry from a clean search
- Turn the mouse off for a few seconds.
- Turn it on and immediately activate pairing mode according to its instructions.
- On the Chromebook, turn Bluetooth off and on if necessary.
- Select + Pair new device and wait for the mouse name.
If the mouse still does not appear after these checks, the Chromebook may not support that Bluetooth device, the mouse may not actually be in discovery mode, or the mouse may have a hardware or power fault. The manufacturer can confirm compatibility and the correct pairing sequence.

A listed device has been detected, but the connection handshake is failing. Start with the least disruptive fixes before removing the saved pairing.
Retry Bluetooth and the pairing prompt
- Cancel the current attempt if ChromeOS is still waiting.
- Turn Chromebook Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again.
- Put the mouse back into pairing mode.
- Select + Pair new device, choose the mouse, and complete every prompt.
- If a PIN prompt appears, enter the value specified by the mouse’s instructions or follow the exact on-screen direction.
Do not repeatedly enter an invented PIN. A wrong code can leave the attempt incomplete and make it harder to tell whether the mouse is still discoverable.
Forget the old entry and pair again
If the mouse was paired to this Chromebook in the past, its saved record may no longer match the mouse’s current state. Open Settings and Bluetooth, select the mouse in the connected or previously connected list, and choose the available Forget or device-management option. Then place the mouse in pairing mode and run + Pair new device from the beginning.

Forgetting is different from merely switching Bluetooth off and on: it removes the saved pairing and requires a new association. Use it when a previously working mouse is listed but refuses every connection attempt. If the mouse is listed more than once, remove the stale entry that corresponds to the failed connection, then pair the active Bluetooth channel again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRestart and install available updates
Google’s Chromebook troubleshooting guidance recommends turning the Chromebook off and back on and installing available system updates for continuing Bluetooth problems. Restart after you have closed the pairing attempt, then check ChromeOS Settings for updates before trying the pairing sequence again. An update can change Bluetooth behavior, so test the mouse after the update has finished rather than interrupting the process.
Troubleshoot a mouse that connects and then disconnects
Intermittent disconnections usually require checking power, distance, radio conditions, and Chromebook workload. Apply the following in order so you can identify which change helps.
Confirm charge and support
Make sure the mouse is fully charged and remains powered on. A low charge can cause an otherwise successful pairing to become unreliable. Also verify that the Chromebook and mouse are supported together; a device appearing in a scan does not guarantee that every feature or connection behavior is supported.
Reset the Bluetooth radio connection
- Select the time and turn Chromebook Bluetooth off.
- Wait briefly, then turn Bluetooth on.
- Turn the mouse off and on, keeping it close to the Chromebook.
- If it does not reconnect automatically, select the mouse from the saved devices list or use + Pair new device after forgetting the old entry.
Reduce distance and interference
Move the mouse and Chromebook closer together. Move the mouse away from other wireless devices and household appliances that could interfere with the connection. Test in a simple setup with the mouse beside the Chromebook before returning to your normal workspace. If the connection is stable nearby but fails at your usual distance, range or local radio interference is the likely factor.
Close unused tabs and apps
Close browser tabs and apps that are not in use, then test the mouse again. Google includes reducing unused Chromebook activity in its Bluetooth troubleshooting steps. This does not mean that every disconnection is caused by a busy browser; it is a quick way to remove unnecessary workload while you isolate the fault.
Restart and update
If toggling Bluetooth and reducing interference do not help, restart the Chromebook and install any available ChromeOS updates. After the restart, test with the mouse charged, nearby, and away from other wireless equipment.
Use a controlled test
Change one condition at a time: first test with a full charge, then test beside the Chromebook, then test with nearby wireless equipment moved away, and finally test after closing unused tabs and apps. If the pointer remains stable in this simple setup, restore your usual distance and devices one at a time. This does not prove which appliance is responsible, but it helps identify the condition that brings the drops back.
A practical decision table
| Symptom | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Mouse is absent from the device list | Bluetooth is on; mouse is charged, on, discoverable, and in pairing mode | Retry Bluetooth > + Pair new device; follow the mouse maker’s pairing sequence |
| Mouse appears but connection fails | Toggle Bluetooth; inspect any PIN prompt | Forget the saved mouse entry, restart the Chromebook, and pair again |
| Mouse connects, then drops | Charge level, device support, distance, and nearby wireless equipment | Move closer, reduce interference, close unused tabs/apps, then restart and update |
| No Bluetooth control appears | Select the time and inspect the status area | Check Bluetooth support for the exact Chromebook model with its manufacturer |
When not to use Chromebook recovery
A mouse that will not pair is not, by itself, a reason to begin Chromebook recovery. Google’s separate hardware troubleshooting material places recovery after basic checks. Start with Bluetooth availability, mouse charge, discoverability, pairing mode, a fresh pairing attempt, a restart, and available updates. Escalate to recovery only if Google or the Chromebook manufacturer specifically directs it for a broader hardware or system problem.

When to contact support
Contact the Bluetooth mouse manufacturer when you need the model’s exact pairing-button sequence, a compatibility confirmation, or help determining whether the mouse is entering discovery mode. Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when Bluetooth is missing from the status area, the model’s Bluetooth support is unclear, or the Chromebook continues to fail with a known-supported mouse after the standard checks.
When contacting support, provide the exact mouse model, Chromebook model, ChromeOS version if requested, whether the mouse appears in + Pair new device, and which stage fails. Explain whether the mouse is absent, refuses a connection, or disconnects after pairing. Also note whether it works beside the Chromebook, whether it is charged, and whether forgetting the saved entry changed anything. That information helps support distinguish discovery, authentication, range, and hardware problems.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I put a Bluetooth mouse into pairing mode?
Use the exact instructions for your mouse model. Pairing controls vary, and simply turning the mouse on may not make it discoverable.
Can a mouse reconnect without pairing again?
Yes. Google says a previously connected, supported mouse can reconnect automatically when it is turned on and near the Chromebook.
What should I do if the mouse is connected to another device?
Disconnect or switch off the nearby computer, tablet, or phone, then select the mouse’s Bluetooth channel and activate pairing mode again.
When should I forget a saved mouse?
Forget it when a previously paired mouse appears in Bluetooth settings but refuses repeated connection attempts. Pair it again with + Pair new device.
