Open the keyboard, set its viewing angle, and attach a compatible iPad Air magnetically with its rear camera lenses aligned to the keyboard cutout. The keyboard then works without a power switch, a pairing code, or a separate battery charge.
Before attaching it, verify your iPad model and update to iPadOS 18.3 or later. Those two checks prevent most setup failures, especially when a keyboard from a different iPad generation is involved.

How do I pair my Magic Keyboard to my iPad Air?
The Magic Keyboard for iPad Air uses the iPad’s Smart Connector rather than a conventional wireless pairing process. There is no Bluetooth menu to open and no pairing button to press. The keyboard receives power from the iPad as soon as the magnetic connection is correctly aligned.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify your iPad at Settings > General > About > Model Name.
- Confirm that the model is supported by this specific Magic Keyboard family.
- Place the keyboard on a flat, stable surface with the hinge facing away from you and the Apple logo on top.
- Open the keyboard lid and tilt it to the viewing angle you want. Stop when it reaches a comfortable position or resists further opening.
- Lower the iPad onto the keyboard. Align the iPad’s rear camera lenses with the cutout at the top-left of the keyboard.
- When the magnets and Smart Connector meet, begin typing or move your finger on the trackpad.
The first keypress wakes the iPad. A further keypress brings up the Lock Screen, after which you can authenticate and continue working. If nothing happens, leave the iPad attached while you work through the compatibility and connection checks below.

Which iPad Air models are compatible?
Compatibility depends on the exact iPad Air generation and screen size; a keyboard that fits one iPad Air family is not automatically suitable for another. Apple’s current US keyboard-selection page lists the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air for these models:
| iPad Air model listed by Apple | What to verify before purchase or setup |
|---|---|
| iPad Air 11-inch (M2) | Model name and 11-inch size |
| iPad Air 11-inch (M3) | Model name and 11-inch size |
| iPad Air 11-inch (M4) | Model name and 11-inch size |
| iPad Air 13-inch (M2) | Model name and 13-inch size |
| iPad Air 13-inch (M3) | Model name and 13-inch size |
| iPad Air 13-inch (M4) | Model name and 13-inch size |
| iPad Air (4th generation) | Confirm that the accessory is the iPad Air keyboard version, not a keyboard for another iPad family |
| iPad Air (5th generation) | Confirm the generation in Settings before attaching the keyboard |
Apple’s list is model-specific. Do not rely only on the words “iPad Air” on a box or store listing. Open Settings > General > About > Model Name, then match the complete name and generation with the keyboard’s compatibility information.
What iPadOS version does the keyboard require?
Apple Support specifies iPadOS 18.3 or later for Magic Keyboard for iPad Air. To check the installed version, open Settings > General > Software Update. Install the available update, keep the iPad connected to power if necessary, and let it restart before trying the keyboard again.

The keyboard will not become compatible simply because it attaches magnetically; the operating system must also meet Apple’s stated minimum.
Why is there no Bluetooth pairing step?
The keyboard is designed to communicate through the physical Smart Connector contacts built into the iPad and keyboard. Magnets hold the two parts together while the contacts carry power and input data. Because the connection is physical, the keyboard does not appear as a Bluetooth accessory, does not ask for a pairing code, and does not require a separate on/off switch.

This also explains why camera placement matters. The camera cutout is the visual guide for positioning the iPad; when the lenses sit in that opening, the connector contacts can align correctly. A slight misalignment may leave the iPad attached but prevent typing or trackpad input.
How to position the keyboard and choose a viewing angle
Start on a flat surface
Put the keyboard on a desk or other flat surface before attaching the iPad. Keep the hinge facing away from you and the Apple logo on top. This orientation gives the lid room to open and makes the camera cutout easy to see.
Open the lid gradually
Lift the lid and tilt the screen until it reaches the angle you need. Do not force it past the point where the hinge resists further opening. The hinge is intended to hold the iPad at the selected angle while you type or use the trackpad.
Attach the iPad from above
Bring the iPad down onto the keyboard rather than sliding it sideways. Aim the rear camera lenses at the cutout in the top-left corner. The magnetic pull should guide the tablet into place. Once attached, test both a key and the trackpad before moving the keyboard to another surface.
Does Magic Keyboard for iPad Air need to be charged?
No. Apple states that after the iPad is connected, you do not need to pair, turn on, or charge the Magic Keyboard. The keyboard draws the power it needs from the iPad through the Smart Connector, so there is no separate battery percentage to monitor.

You can charge the iPad through either of two USB-C locations:
- Connect a USB-C cable directly to the iPad.
- Connect the cable to the USB-C port on the keyboard’s hinge.
The keyboard’s USB-C port supplies power to the iPad but does not transmit data. It therefore cannot serve as a USB-C hub for a mouse, storage device, or other input accessory. Connect data accessories to the iPad’s own USB-C port instead.
How to adjust trackpad and keyboard settings
Trackpad behavior
Open Settings > General > Trackpad to adjust how the pointer responds. Available controls include:
- Tracking speed: Move the slider to make pointer movement slower or faster.
- Scrolling direction: Choose the direction that feels natural for your workflow.
- Tap to Click: Turn it on if you want a light tap to register as a click instead of pressing the trackpad.
- Two Finger Secondary Click: Enable it for a two-finger secondary (context) click.
Change one option at a time and test it in a document or webpage. That makes it easier to identify which setting changed the behavior you notice.
Hardware keyboard brightness
Keyboard brightness controls are under Settings > General > Keyboard > Hardware Keyboard. Open that panel to adjust the available brightness setting for the keyboard. If you do not see the control, first confirm that the iPad is attached and responding to keystrokes.

Why won’t my Magic Keyboard connect to my iPad Air?
Use the following order. It starts with checks that can prevent a connection entirely and ends with simple recovery actions.
1. Check the exact model
Return to Settings > General > About > Model Name and compare the complete model name, generation, and size with the keyboard’s supported list. If the accessory belongs to another Magic Keyboard family, the magnets or connector layout may not match even when both products are described as being for iPad.
2. Update iPadOS
Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available release. Magic Keyboard for iPad Air requires iPadOS 18.3 or later. After the update finishes and the iPad restarts, attach the keyboard again.
3. Inspect and clean the Smart Connector
Detach the iPad. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the Smart Connector area on the keyboard and the matching connector area on the iPad’s back or edge. Remove dust, crumbs, or film without applying liquid or scraping the contacts. Reattach the iPad with the camera lenses centered over the cutout.

4. Remove other cases and covers
Take off any iPad case, folio, skin, or cover that sits between the tablet and the keyboard. Even a thin layer can prevent the magnets or connector contacts from meeting fully. Test the keyboard with the iPad bare before deciding that the accessory has failed.

5. Reconnect and test both input devices
Attach the iPad again, press a key, and move a finger on the trackpad. If one works and the other does not, detach and reconnect once more while checking the alignment. Avoid judging the connection by the screen angle alone; the iPad can appear physically attached while the contacts are not seated.
6. Restart the iPad
If the keyboard still does not respond after cleaning, updating, removing the case, and reconnecting, restart the iPad. Once it has booted, attach the keyboard before opening other accessories or trying another input device.
Symptoms and likely causes
| What you observe | What to check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The iPad attaches but no keys work | Camera alignment and Smart Connector cleanliness | Detach, clean both connector areas with a soft lint-free cloth, and reconnect |
| The trackpad does not move the pointer | Complete magnetic seating and any case or cover | Remove the case, reconnect, then test the trackpad again |
| Nothing happens after a keypress | Supported model and iPadOS version | Confirm the model and update to iPadOS 18.3 or later |
| The keyboard works intermittently | Debris, partial alignment, or a cover between the devices | Clean, remove the cover, and attach the iPad squarely over the cutout |
| The iPad charges through the keyboard but a USB-C accessory is not detected | USB-C port function | Move the data accessory to the iPad’s own USB-C port; the keyboard port provides power only |
Can I use the keyboard while charging?
Yes. Plug the USB-C cable into the keyboard’s USB-C port and continue typing or using the trackpad while the iPad charges. That port is intended to reduce cable clutter around the tablet, but it remains power-only for connected accessories. If you need a mouse, drive, display, or other USB-C data device, connect it to the iPad directly.
What does the Magic Keyboard for iPad Air cost?
Apple’s US product page listed Magic Keyboard for iPad Air from $269 when checked on October 13, 2026. That is a starting price for the US listing at that time; prices and availability can change, and the correct version still depends on the iPad Air model and size. Confirm compatibility before treating a lower-priced listing as a suitable replacement.
