To set up the Dell Pro 7 Rechargeable Compact Keyboard, model KB746, set the power switch to WIN or MAC for your system, then either plug in the included Dell Secure Link USB receiver and select connection mode 1, or press and hold the connection mode 2 key to pair over Bluetooth. Charge it over USB-C. The steps below follow Dell’s current setup guidance for this keyboard.
Confirm you have the KB746 keyboard
Dell sells the standalone keyboard as the KB746 and sells it separately from the KM746, which bundles a keyboard with a mouse. The KB746 is the model these steps cover. The KM746 bundle shares the same Secure Link receiver, and Dell’s KM746 setup video is the source for the receiver steps, but the mouse itself has its own charging behaviour and figures. Do not apply any mouse charging times to the keyboard.

Step 1: Set the layout switch
Before you connect anything, slide the keyboard’s power switch toward WIN for a Windows layout or toward MAC for a Mac layout. Dell’s product listing describes the keyboard as a wireless keyboard with USB-C charging and Bluetooth/RF connectivity, so the same unit works with either connection route below.

Choose a connection method
You have two ways to connect, and they use different connection modes on the keyboard.
#1 Best Overall
- Quiet performance for greater focus
- Smooth, fatigue-free typing
- Comfortable control
- Ultra-smooth glide
- Extended power performance
| Route | Keyboard connection mode | What you need | How it connects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dell Secure Link USB receiver | Mode 1 | The included Secure Link USB receiver | Receiver plugged into the computer; keyboard set to mode 1 |
| Bluetooth | Mode 2 for a new pairing; mode 3 for a second Bluetooth device | Bluetooth turned on in the computer | Pairing code typed on the keyboard after you select Dell KB746 on the computer |
Dell’s setup video describes up to two Bluetooth device connections, using modes 2 and 3. The receiver route is the simpler option when your computer has a free USB port. Bluetooth is useful when you want to pair directly with a host without the receiver.
Step 2: Connect with the USB receiver
- Plug the Dell Secure Link USB receiver into a USB port on the computer.
- On the keyboard, select connection mode 1.
- Use the keyboard; it connects through the receiver.
Dell lists the Secure Link receiver among the KB746 package contents, so it should be in the box with the keyboard.

Step 3: Pair over Bluetooth
- Turn on Bluetooth on the computer. On Windows 11, this is under Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- On the keyboard, press and hold the connection mode 2 key until its light starts blinking.
- In the computer’s Bluetooth pairing list, select Dell KB746.
- Type the number shown on the computer screen using the keyboard, then press Enter.
If the light does not blink, the keyboard is not in pairing mode, so hold the mode 2 key again. Dell’s setup video demonstrates this flow with a Windows-style on-screen code prompt. Other operating systems may show different pairing menus, and Dell’s setup video does not show each system’s interface. Dell’s specifications list compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPadOS and Android.
