From there, select the earbuds on your device. An iPhone needs Bluetooth enabled and iOS 27 or later; a Mac may connect automatically through the same Apple Account or can be paired manually; a Windows PC uses its normal Bluetooth device list. Siri is not available when AirPods are used with a non-Apple device.
What you need before pairing
Have both AirPods 5 earbuds in the charging case, open the lid, and make sure the earbuds have charge. Keep the case close to the device during setup. Pairing is a Bluetooth discovery process, so the device must have Bluetooth enabled and should be running current system software.

- iPhone: Apple’s current support guidance lists iOS 27 as the minimum version for pairing AirPods 5. Install available iPhone software updates before troubleshooting connection problems.
- Mac: Bluetooth must be enabled in System Settings. If the Mac and iPhone use the same Apple Account, AirPods already set up on the iPhone may appear automatically on the Mac.
- Windows PC: Use the PC’s built-in Bluetooth settings. Apple’s instructions address non-Apple Bluetooth devices generally and do not specify one set of Windows menu names for every Windows release.
AirPods 5 do not require a special adapter or cable for these procedures. The essential control is the front of the open charging case, not a setup button on the back.

- Place both AirPods 5 earbuds in the charging case.
- Open the lid and leave the earbuds inside.
- Double-tap the front of the case.
- Continue until the case status light flashes white.

Pair AirPods 5 with an iPhone
1. Update iOS and turn on Bluetooth
- Open Settings and tap General > Software Update. Install an available update; AirPods 5 pairing requires iOS 27 or later according to Apple’s current support page.
- Return to Settings, tap Bluetooth, and make sure the Bluetooth switch is on.
2. Start AirPods 5 pairing
- Put both earbuds in the open case.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- Hold the open case next to the unlocked iPhone.
An on-screen setup prompt should appear. Follow the prompts to finish pairing and configure the available AirPods options. If no prompt appears, remain on the Bluetooth settings screen and wait for AirPods to appear in the device list, then tap the listing.
3. Confirm the connection
After setup, insert the earbuds and play audio. The iPhone should route sound to AirPods 5. If audio continues through the iPhone speaker, open the playback destination controls and choose the AirPods. Closing the case or moving out of Bluetooth range can disconnect the active audio session; reopening the case near the phone lets you try again.
When the iPhone cannot find AirPods 5
Check that both earbuds are seated in the case and charging, Bluetooth is on, and iOS is at least version 27. Close the case, wait 15 seconds, reopen it, repeat the front double-tap until the light flashes white, and try again. If the earbuds still do not appear or refuse to connect, follow Apple’s AirPods reset procedure and then repeat the pairing steps.

Pair AirPods 5 with a Mac
Automatic connection through the same Apple Account
If AirPods 5 were already set up with an iPhone and the Mac is signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account, Apple says the Mac should connect to them automatically. Put the earbuds in your ears, then use the Mac’s Control Centre or Sound controls to select AirPods if they are not already the active output.
Automatic availability depends on the same Apple Account relationship. A Mac signed in to a different account, or a Mac that has never seen the earbuds, may require manual Bluetooth pairing.
Manual pairing in macOS
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Place both AirPods 5 earbuds in the open case.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- In Nearby Devices, find AirPods 5 and click Connect.
Keep the case open until the Mac reports that the connection is complete. You can then close the lid and use the earbuds normally.

A successful Bluetooth connection does not always mean the Mac has changed its audio output. Open Control Centre, choose the Sound controls, and select AirPods 5 as the output device. This changes where audio plays without requiring you to pair the earbuds again.

Mac pairing problems
Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled, both earbuds are charging, and the case is in pairing mode with a flashing white light. If AirPods 5 are missing from Nearby Devices, close the case for 15 seconds, reopen it, and restart the pairing sequence. If they appear but the Connect button does not complete the process, update macOS, retry, and reset the AirPods if necessary before pairing them again.
Pair AirPods 5 with a Windows PC
Windows uses ordinary Bluetooth pairing rather than Apple’s iPhone setup card or the Mac’s Apple Account handoff. Menu labels vary by Windows version, so look for the PC’s Bluetooth settings and its command to add a new Bluetooth device.
- Open the Windows Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Choose the option to add or discover a Bluetooth device.
- Put both AirPods 5 earbuds in the open case.
- Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- Select AirPods 5 when it appears in the PC’s Bluetooth device list and confirm the connection.
After Windows reports that the earbuds are connected, choose AirPods 5 as the playback and, when needed, microphone device in the app or Windows sound controls. The exact names of those controls depend on the Windows release and the application you are using.
What works on Windows and what does not
Apple states that AirPods can function as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device: you can listen and talk. Siri is not available in that setup. Music playback, video sound, voice calls, and microphone use therefore depend on the PC and app exposing the normal Bluetooth audio and headset profiles; Apple’s cited instructions do not promise Apple-specific features or Windows-specific enhancements.

iPhone, Mac, and Windows pairing compared
| Device | Where pairing starts | How AirPods 5 are discovered | Special behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Settings > Bluetooth | Hold the open case near the iPhone after the white-light pairing sequence; follow the setup prompt | Requires iOS 27 or later; Apple setup prompt is available |
| Mac | System Settings > Bluetooth for manual setup | Select AirPods 5 under Nearby Devices, or use the same-Apple-Account automatic connection | Can connect automatically after iPhone setup when the Mac uses the same Apple Account |
| Windows PC | The PC’s Bluetooth settings | Select AirPods 5 from the Bluetooth device list | Bluetooth headset use is supported; Siri is unavailable |
In every case, the AirPods 5-specific discovery action is the same: both earbuds stay in the open case while you double-tap the case front until the status light flashes white.

Work through the checks in order. Most failures come from software compatibility, an uncharged earbud, Bluetooth being disabled, or the case not actually entering discovery mode.
AirPods 5 do not appear in the device list
- Check charging: Make sure both earbuds are seated in the case. A poorly seated earbud may not be ready for pairing.
- Check Bluetooth: Verify Bluetooth is enabled on the iPhone, Mac, or Windows PC rather than assuming it is on.
- Repeat the exact case gesture: The lid must be open, both earbuds must be inside, and the double-tap is on the front of the case. Wait for a flashing white light before searching.
- Reset the timing: Close the case, wait 15 seconds, reopen it, and start the pairing sequence again.
- Update software: On iPhone, install iOS 27 or later. On Mac and Windows, install available system and Bluetooth updates before trying again.
AirPods 5 appear but will not connect
Move the case close to the device, cancel any incomplete connection attempt, and repeat pairing mode. If the device remembers an earlier failed entry, remove or forget that AirPods listing in its Bluetooth settings, then discover the earbuds again. Do not assume that selecting an old listing has put the new case session into pairing mode; the white-light sequence is still required.

The Mac connects but sound stays on the speakers
Choose AirPods 5 manually in Control Centre or the Mac’s Sound controls. Pairing and audio-output selection are separate actions, so changing the output device is the appropriate fix rather than resetting the earbuds.

Only one earbud seems to work
Return both earbuds to the case and verify that each is charging. Close the lid, wait 15 seconds, reopen it, and retry. If the device still reports an incomplete connection, update its software and reset the AirPods before pairing again. The available guidance does not identify a separate AirPods 5 pairing gesture for a single earbud.
Repeated prompts or an old device keeps reconnecting
Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on other nearby devices that have previously used the AirPods, then pair with the intended device. Once the new connection is complete, turn Bluetooth back on elsewhere and select the desired audio destination when needed. On a Mac using the same Apple Account as the setup iPhone, automatic availability is expected; a Windows PC always relies on its own Bluetooth device list.
When to reset
Apple’s troubleshooting order is to update the device, confirm both earbuds are charging, turn on Bluetooth, retry pairing, and reset the AirPods if they remain absent or will not connect. Use Apple’s current reset instructions for AirPods 5 rather than applying a procedure intended for an older model. After the reset completes, put both earbuds in the case, open the lid, double-tap the front until the light flashes white, and pair from the beginning.

Pairing is the one-time act of adding AirPods 5 to a device’s Bluetooth records. Connecting is what happens when that device subsequently uses the saved pairing. The iPhone setup prompt and the Mac’s same-Apple-Account handoff can make the first connection feel automatic, while Windows requires you to choose the earbuds from its Bluetooth list. If audio goes to the wrong speaker after a successful pairing, select AirPods 5 as the active sound output instead of repeating the entire setup.
Quick checklists
Before you tap Connect
- Both earbuds are in the open case.
- The case is close to the device.
- The device’s Bluetooth switch is on.
- The iPhone is running iOS 27 or later.
- The case light is flashing white after a double-tap on the front.
If the first attempt fails
- Close the case and wait 15 seconds.
- Reopen it and confirm both earbuds are charging.
- Repeat the front double-tap until the white light flashes.
- Retry from the device’s Bluetooth screen.
- Install pending software updates.
- Reset the AirPods using Apple’s current AirPods 5 procedure if they still do not appear or connect.
Bottom line for each device
Use the open-case, front double-tap method for every AirPods 5 pairing session. On iPhone, update to iOS 27 or later and follow the nearby setup prompt. On Mac, check for the automatic same-Apple-Account connection first, then use System Settings > Bluetooth > Nearby Devices for manual pairing. On Windows, enable Bluetooth and select AirPods 5 from the PC’s device list; listening and talking work as a Bluetooth headset, but Siri does not.
