Which PS5 controller are you pairing?
These instructions depend on the controller model. Sony documents the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 separately, so button names and the first-connection procedure should not be treated as interchangeable.

The steps below concentrate on the DualSense, because it is the standard controller supplied with a PS5. A DualSense Edge follows the same basic USB-first idea for its initial connection, while DUALSHOCK 4 should be handled according to its own support instructions.
How do I pair my first DualSense with a PS5?
The first DualSense pairing establishes a wireless relationship between that controller and the console. You do not need to start in the Bluetooth Accessories menu. Use a cable that carries data, complete the initial handshake, and then remove the cable if you want to play wirelessly.

What you need
- A PS5 that is powered on or being started.
- The DualSense wireless controller.
- The USB cable supplied with the controller, or another USB cable explicitly marked as supporting charging and data or charge-and-sync.
- A free USB port on the PS5.
A cable marked charge-only can deliver power but cannot complete the documented controller connection. If the original cable is missing, use a compatible data cable rather than choosing one solely because it fits the port.
First-pairing procedure
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense to the console with the USB cable.
- If the controller is off, press its PS button.
- Watch for the light bar to blink and the player indicator to light up. Those signals indicate that the console has recognized and paired the controller.
- Leave it connected long enough to gain useful battery charge. When you are ready to use it wirelessly, unplug the cable and press PS if the controller does not wake immediately.
The cable is required for this first documented connection even though the controller will operate wirelessly afterward. Starting with Bluetooth Accessories instead can send you down the wrong path when no controller has yet been paired to navigate the PS5 menus.
How to confirm it worked
- The PS5 responds to the controller’s directional buttons and sticks.
- The controller’s player indicator is illuminated.
- With the cable removed, pressing PS wakes the controller and reconnects it to that console.
If the controller only charges and the PS5 does not respond, treat that as a cable or USB-port problem first; the troubleshooting section covers the recovery order.
How do I connect a second PS5 controller?
A second DualSense can be added wirelessly when one controller is already paired and usable. Controller 1 navigates the PS5 menus, while controller 2 is placed into pairing mode. This is the method to use when you want two players, a spare controller, or a controller that has not yet been registered with this console.
Prepare controller 2
- If the second controller’s player indicator is lit, hold PS until the indicator turns off.
- Disconnect any USB cable from controller 2. The wireless pairing sequence is performed with that controller free of a cable.
- Place controller 2 near the PS5 so its light-bar status is easy to see.
Open the PS5 pairing screen with controller 1
- Use controller 1 to open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Select General.
- Select Bluetooth Accessories.
Put controller 2 into pairing mode
- On controller 2, press and hold Create and PS at the same time.
- Continue holding until the light bar begins to blink.
- Look at the Bluetooth Accessories list on the PS5 and select the controller that appears.
After successful pairing, Sony says the light bar blinks and the player indicator lights up. Assign the controller to the requested user profile if the console presents that prompt. Repeat the same process for another controller, using a paired controller to navigate the menu each time.

How many controllers can be used?
A PS5 can use up to four controllers at once. That is a simultaneous-use limit for the console, not a statement about how many consoles one controller remembers. Keep those two numbers separate when planning multiplayer setups.
Can I pair a PS5 controller without a cable?
Yes, but the answer depends on whether another controller is already paired. Sony’s documented first DualSense connection uses the included USB cable. The cable-free process is for an additional DualSense: controller 1 opens the Bluetooth Accessories screen while controller 2 enters pairing mode with Create + PS.
If this is the only controller you have and it has never been paired to that PS5, connect it by USB first. A wireless scan is not a replacement for that initial documented handshake. If the controller was previously paired to this PS5 but has simply been turned off, pressing PS may reconnect it without repeating the registration process.
What if the PS5 controller will not connect by USB?
When pressing PS produces no pairing response, check the data path before resetting anything. A controller can show charging behavior even when the cable cannot carry the data needed for pairing.
Check the cable
- Use the included cable if it is available.
- Otherwise choose a USB cable labeled charge-and-sync, charging-and-data, or equivalent wording.
- Do not rely on a cable labeled charge-only; Sony says that type cannot be used for this connection.
Try another PS5 USB port
Disconnect the cable, move it to a different USB port on the PS5, reconnect the controller, and press PS again. A single port may be obstructed, damaged, or not making a reliable connection even though the console itself is functioning.

Check the controller state
- Make sure the controller is not still connected to another device by an active cable or wireless session.
- If its player indicator is lit while you are trying to add it as controller 2, hold PS until the indicator goes dark, then start the Bluetooth Accessories procedure again.
- Give the controller some charge if the light bar does not respond at all.
After each change, reconnect the cable and press PS; do not switch several variables at once, because you will not know which change fixed the problem.

How do I reset a DualSense that will not reconnect?
If a compatible data cable, a second USB port, and a fresh press of PS do not restore the connection, Sony’s support procedure includes a hardware reset. Resetting is a recovery step, not the normal first-pairing method.
- Turn off the PS5 if the console is running and disconnect the controller from the cable.
- Find the small reset button on the back of the DualSense.
- Use a thin, non-damaging object to press and hold that button briefly.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable that supports data.
- Press PS and wait for the light bar and player indicator response.
Sony says resetting the DualSense does not affect its pairing settings. If the first attempt fails, repeat the USB and PS steps after confirming that the cable is not charge-only. A reset cannot compensate for a cable that supplies power but no data.
Why does the light bar matter?
The light bar provides a quick status clue during pairing:
- Blinking during first USB connection: the console is processing the controller connection.
- Blinking after holding Create + PS: the second controller is in wireless pairing mode and should appear in Bluetooth Accessories.
- Player indicator illuminated: the PS5 has recognized the controller and assigned it a player position.
- No response: check charge level, the cable’s data capability, the USB port, and then the reset procedure.
Light patterns can vary with the controller’s current state, so use the on-screen response and button input as confirmation rather than treating one color or blink timing as a universal error code.

What is the difference between four controllers and four pairings?
Two separate limits are often confused:

Registering a DualSense with several devices and using several controllers on one console are different operations. Pairing slots concern the controller’s remembered devices; the four-controller figure concerns simultaneous PS5 use.
How should I pair a DualSense Edge?
Sony provides a separate first-connection instruction for DualSense Edge. Use the Edge’s included USB cable, connect it to the PS5, and press the PS button on the Edge. Do not assume that every accessory, button label, or setup screen is identical to the standard DualSense.
When an Edge is being added as an additional controller and another controller is already operating the PS5, use the console’s Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories screen and the pairing controls printed on the Edge. Keep the first-controller-versus-additional-controller distinction intact: the initial connection is USB-first, while the wireless menu is for adding another controller.
How should I pair a DUALSHOCK 4?
DUALSHOCK 4 is listed separately in Sony’s controller support material. For its first connection, connect the controller to the PS5 with its included USB cable and press the controller’s PS button. Its control layout does not include the DualSense’s Create button, so do not apply the Create + PS instruction to it.
If you are unsure which model you have, check the name on the controller or its packaging before following a button combination. Using the correct model-specific procedure is faster than troubleshooting a pairing attempt that the hardware cannot perform.

What should I do if the second controller does not appear in Bluetooth Accessories?
- Confirm that controller 1 still controls the PS5 and that you are on Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- Turn controller 2 off by holding PS until its player indicator goes dark.
- Remove its USB cable.
- Hold Create and PS together until the light bar blinks; holding only one button will not start the documented pairing mode.
- Wait briefly for the controller to appear, then select it with controller 1.
- If it remains absent, move it closer to the PS5, repeat the button combination, and test it with a known data-capable cable if its battery may be low.
Do not begin by deleting unrelated Bluetooth entries or resetting every controller. First verify the controller’s power state, cable removal, button combination, and the exact menu path.
Does pairing with a phone or computer change PS5 setup?
No. Sony lists DualSense support for compatible computers and mobile devices, but available features vary by device. Those compatibility details do not replace the PS5’s first-pairing procedure and should not be used to infer that every phone or computer setting applies to the console.
If a DualSense was recently used with another device, return to the PS5’s documented connection path: use USB and PS for the first PS5 pairing, or use controller 1’s Bluetooth Accessories menu and Create + PS for an additional controller. The device you used previously does not change which PS5 method applies.

- Remember that up to four controllers can be used at once, while one DualSense can store up to four device pairings.
Once the controller responds to the PS5 and reconnects after the cable is removed, the pairing is complete. Keep the data-capable cable available for charging and future recovery, because a cable that only supplies power cannot perform the documented USB connection.
