Pair the watch from the Garmin Connect app—not from your phone’s Bluetooth settings. In Garmin Connect, choose More > Garmin Devices > Add Device, put the watch into its model-specific pairing mode, and confirm the six-digit code shown on the watch. If the connection later fails, restart both devices, toggle Bluetooth, clear old pairing records, check power-saving modes and software updates, and then add the watch again through Garmin Connect.

What you need before pairing
Have the watch, the phone you intend to use, and the latest available Garmin Connect app ready. Keep the devices close together while setting them up. The watch should have enough battery to finish setup, and the phone should have Bluetooth enabled. Garmin Connect may also request permission to find nearby accessories, particularly on iOS.
Pairing creates the Bluetooth relationship between the watch and phone. It does not, by itself, give the watch access to the internet or guarantee that new activity data has reached Garmin’s cloud. The phone still needs a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection when Garmin Connect synchronizes data.

Pair an existing watch with your phone
- Install or update Garmin Connect. Open your phone’s app store, install Garmin Connect, and apply any available update before starting.
- Open the device list. In Garmin Connect, select More > Garmin Devices > Add Device. On iOS, the app may ask you to choose Find Nearby Accessories; approve that request so the app can search.
- Put the watch into pairing mode. On the watch, look for a menu named something like Settings > Bluetooth, Connectivity, Phone, Pair Phone, or Pair Mobile Device. The exact path depends on the model. If none of those labels appears, use that model’s owner’s manual rather than guessing.
- Select the watch in Garmin Connect. When the app finds it, tap the setup or connect option displayed for that device.
- Confirm the six-digit code. Garmin Connect and the watch use a code during setup. Enter the six-digit number in the app or confirm that the number shown on the phone matches the number on the watch.
- Finish the prompts. Leave Garmin Connect open until setup completes. The app may ask for notification, location, or other permissions needed by your phone platform and watch features.
Do not make the phone’s Bluetooth settings the first place you pair the watch. A Bluetooth entry created there can leave Garmin Connect without the pairing information it needs for syncing and notifications. If you already paired that way, remove the old entry and restart the setup in Garmin Connect.
Finding pairing mode when the menu is different
Garmin uses different menu structures across watch families and software versions. A model may call the control Pair Phone, Pair Mobile Device, or place it under a broader Bluetooth or Connectivity menu. Some watches expose pairing mode during initial setup; others require you to open settings from the watch face.
The important result is the same: the watch must be actively advertising itself for pairing when Garmin Connect searches. If the app is open but the watch is still on its normal watch face and no device is found, return to the watch settings and select its phone-pairing command. Do not keep rescanning indefinitely without changing the watch’s state.

Garmin support separates connection reports into four useful symptoms. Choose the closest one before changing settings; the right fix depends on whether the phone cannot see the watch, pairing fails during setup, an established connection drops, or synchronization and notifications are the only missing functions.
| What you see | Likely place to start | Next checks |
|---|---|---|
| The watch is not listed during setup | Restart both devices, toggle phone Bluetooth, and confirm the watch is in pairing mode. | Disable Bluetooth-blocking modes, clear stale records, check updates, and retry from Garmin Connect. |
| “Pairing failed” appears after the watch is found | Remove old Garmin Connect and phone Bluetooth records, then start a fresh pairing. | Check that the watch is not paired with another phone or tablet and confirm the six-digit code. |
| The watch is paired but not connecting | Bring the devices close, restart them, and check whether a power or travel mode disabled Bluetooth. | Check software versions, phone compatibility, and competing phone connections. |
| The watch connects but does not sync or show notifications | Confirm the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data and that Garmin Connect is allowed to run. | Check Garmin service status, Bluetooth range, notification permissions, and the watch’s connection state. |
First-line fixes when the watch is not found
Restart both devices
Turn the phone off and back on. Restart the Garmin watch using the model’s normal power control, then open Garmin Connect and try More > Garmin Devices > Add Device again. Restarting clears temporary Bluetooth and app states without deleting activities or settings.

Toggle Bluetooth on the phone
Open the phone’s quick settings or system settings, turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it on again. Return to Garmin Connect rather than pairing from the system Bluetooth page. If the app still cannot find the watch, restart the phone after the toggle and repeat the search.
Check modes that disable Bluetooth
Garmin identifies Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, and Expedition Mode as possible causes of a disabled Bluetooth connection. Turn off any of these modes temporarily, then place the watch back into phone-pairing mode. Re-enable a power-saving mode only after confirming that the connection works and understanding which connectivity features it suppresses.

Make sure another device is not holding the connection
A watch should not be paired with more than one smartphone or tablet while you are troubleshooting. Turn Bluetooth off on other nearby devices, or remove the watch from their Garmin Connect and Bluetooth lists. Then keep only the intended phone active and retry the app-led setup.
Clear stale pairing records and start over
Old records are a common reason for a device to appear in one place but fail to complete setup. The labels vary between Android and iOS versions, but the process has two parts: remove the watch from Garmin Connect and remove any remaining phone-level Bluetooth record.
- In Garmin Connect, open the Garmin devices list and select the watch you are trying to repair.
- Use the app’s remove or delete-device command. Confirm the removal when asked.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings. If the watch is still listed, choose the command that forgets, removes, or unpairs that device. Do not simply tap it to reconnect.
- Restart the phone and the watch.
- On the watch, open its phone-pairing menu again.
- In Garmin Connect, choose More > Garmin Devices > Add Device and complete the six-digit-code step.
Garmin notes that behavior depends on the Garmin Connect version. With Garmin Connect 5.21 and newer, removing a device from the app may also remove its phone Bluetooth pairing. Check the Bluetooth list anyway; a stale record can remain depending on the phone platform and software.

When pairing fails after the watch is discovered
Confirm the code on both screens
During setup, the watch displays a six-digit code. Enter that number in Garmin Connect or approve the matching number when prompted. If the code changes or disappears, cancel the attempt, return the watch to pairing mode, and begin again so the phone and watch generate a fresh confirmation.
Use only one active pairing attempt
Close other Bluetooth setup screens and stop searches from additional phones or tablets. A second device attempting to claim the watch can interrupt the confirmation step. Keep Garmin Connect in the foreground on the intended phone until the app reports completion.
Update before repeating the process
Install available Garmin Connect updates and update the watch software through Garmin’s normal update process when the watch is already usable. A current app and watch build reduce compatibility problems, especially after a phone operating-system update. If the watch cannot be updated until it is paired, complete the stale-record cleanup first and then update once the connection is restored.
Paired but disconnected
Check distance and obstacles
Garmin gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 30 feet (10 meters) for the watch described on one of its support pages. Garmin Customer Support does not state a publication year on that page, and the guidance is product-specific rather than a universal range for every Garmin watch and phone. Walls, a body between the devices, metal objects, and nearby wireless signals can reduce the usable distance. For testing, put the phone and watch in the same room and within a few feet of each other.
Look for a disabled radio
Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, and Expedition Mode can disable Bluetooth. If the watch began showing connection alerts after you changed an activity or travel profile, inspect those modes first. Turn the mode off, return to the normal watch profile, and check Garmin Connect again.

Restart and verify ownership
Restart both devices, then confirm that the watch is not still trying to reconnect to an old phone. If the old phone is nearby, turn its Bluetooth off while testing. A watch that is technically paired to one phone may not connect to the phone you are currently holding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Paired but not syncing data
Bluetooth pairing and cloud synchronization are separate stages. Bluetooth carries information between the watch and phone; Garmin Connect then needs the phone’s internet connection to upload that information. If new activities or health data are missing, test the phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection and open Garmin Connect so it can synchronize.
- Load a web page or another online service on the phone to verify internet access.
- Open Garmin Connect and leave it running long enough to complete a sync.
- Check Garmin’s service-status information if the phone is online but cloud data still does not appear.
- Keep the watch near the phone during the sync and avoid switching the phone’s Bluetooth off.
A watch can therefore show as connected while recent data remains absent from Garmin’s cloud. Fix the phone’s internet or service-side issue rather than repeatedly deleting the Bluetooth pairing when the Bluetooth link itself is working.
Smart notifications are missing
First establish whether the watch is connected to Garmin Connect. If it is not, use the disconnected-device steps above. If it is connected but notifications do not arrive, check that the phone still grants Garmin Connect the notification permissions it requested and that the watch has not entered a mode that disables Bluetooth or notifications.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the phone within the approximate Bluetooth range while testing and send a simple test notification from another app. If ordinary phone notifications do not appear on the watch but Garmin Connect syncs normally, the remaining issue is likely notification permission or a watch notification setting rather than pairing itself. Menu names differ by phone and watch model, so use the notification section in the relevant owner’s manual for the exact control.

Move the watch from an old phone to a new phone
Use a deliberate handoff instead of trying to pair the watch with both phones at once.
- On the old phone, open Garmin Connect and remove the watch from the Garmin devices list.
- In the old phone’s Bluetooth settings, remove or forget the watch if it remains listed.
- Turn the old phone off. This prevents it from attempting an automatic reconnection while you set up the new phone.
- Install or update Garmin Connect on the new phone and sign in to the Garmin account associated with the watch.
- Put the watch into its phone-pairing mode.
- On the new phone, select More > Garmin Devices > Add Device in Garmin Connect.
- Select the watch and enter or confirm the six-digit code shown on its display.
Removing a device from Garmin Connect has an important Garmin Pay consequence: the watch’s Garmin Pay wallet is deleted and must be recreated after the watch is added to the new phone. Treat the wallet as something you will set up again, not as data that transfers automatically with the Bluetooth pairing.
A complete recovery sequence
When several symptoms overlap, use this order so that each step is more disruptive only if the previous one fails:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Put the watch and phone within a few feet of each other.
- Turn off Battery Saver, Stealth Mode, or Expedition Mode on the watch if active.
- Restart the watch and phone.
- Toggle the phone’s Bluetooth off and on.
- Open Garmin Connect and try to add or reconnect the watch.
- If it is not found or pairing fails, remove the watch from Garmin Connect and forget it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Restart both devices again.
- Put the watch into pairing mode and add it through Garmin Connect, confirming the six-digit code.
- Once paired, verify that the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data and allow a full sync.
- If notifications are still absent, check phone notification permissions and watch notification settings.
How to avoid repeat connection problems
- Always begin a new setup in Garmin Connect, not in the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- Keep Garmin Connect and the watch software current.
- Do not leave the watch paired to several phones or tablets.
- Remember that power-saving, Stealth, and Expedition modes can disable Bluetooth.
- Keep the phone nearby when syncing and when testing notifications.
- When changing phones, remove the watch from the old phone and turn that phone off before pairing the new one.
- Plan to recreate the Garmin Pay wallet after removing and re-adding the watch.
When to consult the model manual or Garmin support
The pairing menu, notification controls, software-update process, and Bluetooth behavior can vary by watch model, phone platform, and app version. Consult the owner’s manual when the watch does not offer an obvious pairing command or when a model-specific mode is unclear. If the documented restart, Bluetooth toggle, stale-record cleanup, update, and Garmin Connect pairing sequence all fail, use Garmin’s support categories for the matching symptom: device not found, pairing failed, paired but not connecting, or smart notifications not arriving. No general pairing-success or failure percentage is established by Garmin’s support material, so a persistent problem should be diagnosed from the specific watch, phone, software versions, and symptom rather than from an assumed failure rate.
