How to Pair a Bluetooth Speaker With Your Phone, Laptop, or TV

To pair a Bluetooth speaker, put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing (discovery) mode, open Bluetooth settings on your phone or computer, and select the speaker when it appears. A TV must support Bluetooth audio and usually has a separate sound-output menu. After pairing, select the speaker as the active audio output if sound does not switch automatically.

The exact button names and menus vary, but the sequence is consistent: make the speaker discoverable, select it from the host device’s Bluetooth list, complete any prompt, and then verify that it is the output carrying sound.

What you need before pairing

Pairing works only when the speaker is discoverable. Turn it on, then press its Bluetooth or pairing control according to the speaker’s instructions. Some speakers use a dedicated Bluetooth button; others require holding a multifunction button. The indicator light or sound prompt differs by model, so use the manual when you cannot tell whether pairing mode is active.

  • Power: Charge the speaker or connect it to power so it does not shut down during setup. A speaker that is plugged in may still need to be switched on.
  • Discoverability: Put the speaker in pairing mode immediately before opening the host device’s Bluetooth list. Being powered on is not always the same as being discoverable.
  • Proximity: Keep the speaker close while pairing. Apple advises keeping an iPhone within about 33 feet (10 meters) of the accessory; that is a pairing guideline, not a guaranteed real-world range.
  • One intended host: If the speaker is already connected to another phone or computer, disconnect it there or place it back into pairing mode before trying the new device.
  • Compatible host: The phone, laptop or television must provide Bluetooth audio support. A computer without Bluetooth needs a suitable USB Bluetooth adapter; a television needs built-in Bluetooth audio or a compatible audio transmitter.

Pairing saves an association between two devices. Connecting makes that saved speaker active at the moment. A phone or computer may remember a speaker but still require you to select it as the current output. This distinction explains why a speaker can show as saved while audio continues through the built-in speakers.

Pairing also does not establish that every speaker can serve several devices at once. Some products support multipoint or simultaneous connections, while others switch between hosts. Unless the speaker’s documentation says otherwise, plan to disconnect it from the previous host before connecting the intended one.

Which settings path should you use?

Host device Where to start Important variation
iPhone Settings > Bluetooth Enter a PIN only if the speaker requests one; check its instructions for the code.
Android phone Bluetooth settings > Pair new device Labels, refresh controls and some features vary by handset, Android version and hardware.
Windows 11 laptop Taskbar Quick Settings Bluetooth control > Manage Bluetooth devices, or Settings > Bluetooth & devices Bluetooth must be supported and turned on; discovery behavior can vary by Windows settings.
Windows 10 laptop Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device > Bluetooth Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, but the documented pairing path remains available on supported installations.
Samsung TV example Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List Menu names and paths differ by model year. Other televisions may not support Bluetooth audio at all.

Use the operating-system route for phones and laptops rather than searching for a separate speaker app. The speaker’s instructions matter for entering discovery mode and for any passcode; the host’s Bluetooth settings handle the actual selection. On a TV, start with sound output, because a general Bluetooth menu may be intended for remotes, keyboards or other accessories rather than audio.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker with an iPhone

  1. Put the speaker into discovery mode using its pairing button or the procedure in its instructions. If it is already linked to another host, disconnect that host first.
  2. On the iPhone, open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  3. Wait for the speaker’s name to appear under the available devices list, then tap it.
  4. If iOS asks for a passcode, enter the PIN supplied in the speaker’s instructions. Do not assume a generic code unless the accessory documentation gives one.
  5. Keep the iPhone and speaker within about 33 feet (10 meters) while pairing, as Apple specifies in its current iPhone guide.

When the speaker is listed as connected, start audio and check where it is playing. If the iPhone remains on its internal speaker, open the app’s audio-output control or the system playback selector and choose the Bluetooth speaker. A successful pairing does not by itself guarantee that every app will switch output without that selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the speaker name never appears, leave the Bluetooth screen open while re-entering pairing mode on the speaker. Make sure the speaker is not merely showing a charging light, and move it closer to the iPhone. If it appears under a different name, use the name shown by the speaker’s instructions rather than guessing a model number.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker with an Android phone

  1. Put the speaker into pairing mode.
  2. Swipe down to open Quick Settings, touch and hold Bluetooth, or open the phone’s Bluetooth settings directly.
  3. Choose Pair new device. Some phones show an available-devices list immediately or provide a refresh control instead.
  4. Tap the speaker’s name when it appears and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. If a passcode is requested and the speaker’s code is unknown, use a code suggested by the accessory documentation or the phone’s instructions; a common code is not guaranteed to work.

Google Android Help notes that some Bluetooth procedures require Android 15 or newer or supported hardware, and manufacturers can change the labels. Once paired, the speaker appears under saved devices. To reconnect later, turn Bluetooth on and select the speaker under saved devices if it does not reconnect automatically. If you see a saved entry but hear no sound, open the phone’s connected-device or audio-output controls and make the speaker active.

A saved entry is useful for reconnection, but it is not proof that the speaker is currently connected. Check the status shown beside the device and then check the media-output selector. If another host has taken the speaker’s connection, disconnect that host or return the speaker to pairing mode before selecting it on Android.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker with a Windows laptop

Windows 11

  1. Turn on the speaker and place it in pairing mode.
  2. Confirm that the laptop supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is on. Open the taskbar’s Quick Settings Bluetooth control and choose Manage Bluetooth devices, or open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Find the speaker in the list of new devices and select it.
  4. Accept any pairing prompt. If Windows asks for a code, use the code provided by the speaker’s instructions.

After Windows reports that the speaker is connected, select it as the playback device if audio still comes from the laptop. The connection can be saved even when the speaker is not currently the active output. Check the sound output control in Windows and choose the speaker by name before testing playback.

Windows 10

  1. Put the speaker into discovery mode.
  2. Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  3. Select Add Bluetooth or other device, choose Bluetooth, and wait for the speaker to appear.
  4. Select the speaker and complete the prompts.

Microsoft says many Windows computers have Bluetooth built in. If yours does not, a USB Bluetooth adapter can be plugged into a USB port to add Bluetooth. On Windows, discovery settings can affect whether nearby devices appear, so check that Bluetooth discovery is enabled if the speaker is on and in pairing mode but missing from the list. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; that date concerns operating-system support, not whether the laptop’s existing Bluetooth hardware can pair.

If a USB adapter is required, install it in a compatible USB port and follow its device instructions before opening the Bluetooth page. The adapter adds the radio capability; it does not remove the need to put the speaker in discovery mode or choose it as the playback output after pairing.

Connect a Bluetooth speaker to a TV

First confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio

A TV can have Bluetooth for a remote or keyboard without offering Bluetooth audio output. Look in the TV’s sound settings for a Bluetooth speaker or Bluetooth audio-device list, and check the model’s manual or specifications. The exact menu is model-specific, so do not infer audio support solely from the presence of a Bluetooth remote.

This compatibility check is the main difference between TV setup and phone or laptop setup. A phone or computer normally exposes a Bluetooth-device list as part of its operating system. A television may hide audio devices under a sound-output submenu, may support only certain Bluetooth accessories, or may not transmit audio over Bluetooth at all.

Samsung TV example

  1. Put the speaker into pairing mode.
  2. On many Samsung models, open Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List.
  3. Select the speaker from the list and approve the connection.
  4. Return to the sound-output screen and verify that the Bluetooth speaker is the selected output.

Samsung publishes several menu variants for different model years, so your labels may not match this path exactly. Use the manual for the specific television when you cannot find a Bluetooth Speaker List. A television that has no Bluetooth-audio option should be treated as unsupported until its documentation says otherwise.

If the TV offers a list but the speaker is absent, confirm that the speaker is discoverable at that moment and close enough for setup. Do not assume that scanning from a remote-control menu scans for speakers; look specifically for an audio-device or sound-output list.

If the TV has no Bluetooth audio option

Samsung identifies a Bluetooth adapter as an option when a compatible TV lacks built-in Bluetooth audio. The adapter must connect to an audio output the television actually provides, such as a 3.5 mm jack or standard left/right AUX/RCA output. Check the port type before buying or connecting an adapter; a cable or adapter that does not match the TV’s available output cannot transmit its sound to the speaker.

Match the transmitter to the output available on the set, not merely to the connector on the speaker. Confirm whether the television has a 3.5 mm output or separate left and right AUX/RCA outputs, and follow the adapter’s pairing instructions. An adapter is a fallback for a TV without built-in Bluetooth audio; it is not necessary when the television already provides a supported Bluetooth Speaker List.

What to do after the speaker pairs

Test with a short piece of audio while keeping the devices nearby. Pairing stores the relationship, but playback depends on the active output selection. On a phone, choose the speaker from the connected-device or media-output control. In Windows, choose it as the playback device. On a TV, return to the sound-output menu and select the Bluetooth speaker. These are separate checks because a saved device is not necessarily the device currently carrying audio.

If you move the speaker away and later return, the phone, laptop or TV may reconnect automatically. If it does not, open the saved or previously paired devices list and select the speaker. If the speaker has connected to a different host in the meantime, disconnect it from that host or place it back into pairing mode before selecting it on the intended device. Bluetooth speakers do not all support the same simultaneous-connection or multipoint behavior, so do not assume that one speaker can actively serve every paired device at once.

When testing a TV, play speech or music and listen for both continuity and timing. A connection can remain active while sound occasionally drops out or voices lag behind the picture. Those symptoms point to distance, obstructions, interference or compatibility considerations rather than necessarily a failed pairing.

Troubleshoot a speaker that will not appear or play audio

The speaker is missing from the Bluetooth list

  • Confirm that the speaker is powered on, not merely charging, and place it in pairing mode again.
  • Move it close to the phone, laptop or TV during discovery. Apple uses approximately 33 feet (10 meters) as an iPhone pairing guideline.
  • Check the speaker’s manual for the correct pairing control and for any indicator that confirms discovery mode.
  • Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in the host device’s settings.
  • On Windows, review discovery-related Bluetooth settings because Microsoft notes that they can affect whether devices appear.
  • If another phone or computer is using the speaker, disconnect that host or re-enter pairing mode before searching again.
  • On a TV, search from the sound-output or Bluetooth-speaker menu and verify that the model supports Bluetooth audio.

Do not start by deleting every saved device. First establish that the speaker is powered, discoverable and near the intended host. Removing a saved entry cannot make an unsupported television gain Bluetooth audio capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The speaker shows as paired, but there is no sound

  • Check whether the status says connected rather than merely saved or paired.
  • Select the speaker as the current audio output on the phone, in Windows playback controls, or in the TV’s sound-output menu.
  • Start playback again after changing the output; some apps keep the previous output until playback is restarted.
  • If the speaker immediately changes back to another host, disconnect that host before reconnecting the intended device.
  • Confirm that the speaker itself is not muted or shut down and that the source device is producing audio.

The key diagnostic question is whether the host sees the speaker as a saved association or as the active connected output. If it is saved but not connected, select it again. If it is connected but silent, select it explicitly as the output and test another short audio clip.

The TV does not list the speaker

  • Verify Bluetooth-audio support in the TV’s model manual or specifications.
  • Look specifically under sound output, not only under general Bluetooth or remote-control settings.
  • Confirm the speaker is discoverable and nearby.
  • If the TV has no Bluetooth-audio menu, identify whether it has a 3.5 mm or left/right AUX/RCA output for use with a compatible Bluetooth adapter.
  • Check that the adapter, if used, matches the physical output on the television and is set to transmit rather than receive.

Bluetooth remotes and Bluetooth audio are separate capabilities. A remote that works wirelessly is therefore not sufficient evidence that the TV can send program sound to a speaker.

TV sound cuts out or is out of sync

Samsung lists distance, obstructions, radio interference and compatibility as possible causes of Bluetooth TV dropouts. Reduce the distance, remove physical obstacles where practical, and move potential sources of radio interference away from the path. Lip-sync error is also possible: voices and on-screen movement may not align perfectly even when the connection remains active. Check the television and speaker documentation for compatibility information before assuming the speaker is defective.

These are possible limitations, not inevitable results of TV Bluetooth. If the sound is stable near the television but unreliable farther away, distance or obstruction is a useful clue. If the connection is stable but speech is delayed, investigate compatibility and any audio-sync controls documented for that TV and speaker.

Choosing the right connection path

Question Phone or laptop TV
Is Bluetooth audio normally built in? Bluetooth settings are part of the operating system on supported iPhone, Android and Windows devices. Support varies by model; a Bluetooth remote does not prove that Bluetooth audio output is available.
Where do you select the speaker? In the device’s Bluetooth list, then in its audio-output controls if necessary. In the television’s sound-output menu or Bluetooth speaker list.
What if the speaker does not appear? Re-enter pairing mode, move closer, check Bluetooth and review Windows discovery settings where applicable. Perform the same checks, then verify that the TV supports Bluetooth audio.
What is the fallback? A USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a Windows computer that lacks it. A compatible Bluetooth adapter can use a 3.5 mm or left/right AUX/RCA audio output on a TV that lacks built-in Bluetooth audio.
What limitation deserves attention? Saved and connected states are different, and simultaneous-connection behavior varies by speaker. Distance, obstacles, interference, compatibility and possible lip-sync delay can affect playback.

For a phone or laptop, the deciding factor is usually the operating-system path and whether Bluetooth hardware is present. For a TV, first decide whether native Bluetooth audio exists. If it does, use the sound-output menu; if it does not, compare the available wired outputs with the input requirements of a Bluetooth transmitter. This prevents buying an adapter that cannot connect to the ports on the set.

A reliable pairing checklist

  1. Check that the speaker is charged and that its instructions identify the pairing control.
  2. Put the speaker into discovery mode before opening the host’s device list.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth and select the speaker when its name appears.
  4. Use a passcode only when prompted, following the speaker’s documentation.
  5. Confirm the status is connected, not only saved or paired.
  6. Select the speaker as the active audio output.
  7. If the device is absent, move closer, check discovery mode and investigate whether another host is connected.
  8. For a TV, verify Bluetooth-audio support and the correct sound-output menu before troubleshooting the speaker itself.
  9. For an unsupported TV, identify a matching 3.5 mm or left/right AUX/RCA output before choosing a Bluetooth adapter.
  10. Test with nearby audio first, then assess distance, obstacles, interference and timing if TV playback is unstable.

These steps cover the documented pairing routes for iPhone, Android, Windows 10 and Windows 11, plus the Samsung TV example. The controls on a different speaker or television may use different names, but the sequence remains: make the speaker discoverable, select it from the host’s Bluetooth settings, then choose it as the active audio output.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Bluetooth speaker not showing up?

Make sure it is powered on and in pairing or discovery mode, move it close to the phone, laptop or TV, and confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the host. If another device is connected to the speaker, disconnect that host or put the speaker back into pairing mode. On a TV, search from the sound-output menu and verify that the model supports Bluetooth audio.

What is the difference between paired and connected?

Pairing saves the relationship between the devices. Connecting makes the speaker the active device now. A speaker can appear as saved or paired while audio still plays through the phone, laptop or TV, so select it as the current output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I pair one speaker with two devices?

A speaker may remember several paired devices, but simultaneous connections and multipoint behavior vary by model. Do not assume it can actively serve two hosts. Disconnect the other phone or computer or re-enter pairing mode when switching.

Does a Bluetooth remote prove that my TV supports a Bluetooth speaker?

No. A TV may use Bluetooth for a remote or keyboard without offering Bluetooth audio output. Look for a Bluetooth speaker list under sound output and check the television’s model manual or specifications.

What can I do if my TV has no Bluetooth audio setting?

If the TV lacks built-in Bluetooth audio, Samsung identifies a compatible Bluetooth adapter as an option when the set has a 3.5 mm or standard left/right AUX/RCA audio output. Match the adapter to a port the TV actually provides.

Why is TV Bluetooth audio delayed or cutting out?

Distance, obstructions, radio interference and compatibility can affect TV Bluetooth audio, and lip-sync error is possible. Reduce the distance and obstacles, consider nearby interference, and check the TV and speaker documentation for compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a passcode to pair?

Only if the speaker or host requests one. Use the PIN supplied in the speaker’s instructions rather than assuming a generic code. Android also advises following the accessory documentation when an unknown code is requested.

Can I add Bluetooth to a Windows laptop that lacks it?

Yes. Microsoft says a USB Bluetooth adapter can be plugged into a USB port on the Windows device to add Bluetooth. After installing or enabling it, use the normal Windows pairing path and select the speaker as the playback device.

The Bottom Line

Put the speaker in discovery mode, select it in the phone or laptop’s Bluetooth settings, and then make it the active audio output. For a TV, confirm Bluetooth-audio support and use its model-specific sound-output menu; if native support is absent, a compatible adapter requires a matching 3.5 mm or left/right AUX/RCA output. If setup fails, check discoverability, distance, another connected host, compatibility and TV audio-output support before assuming the speaker is faulty.
