Put the speaker into its own pairing or discovery mode first, then open your phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the speaker. If it does not appear or will not play sound, work through power, distance, stale pairings, other connected devices and audio-routing checks in that order. The speaker’s manual remains the authority for its pairing button and any PIN.
This guide covers current iPhone and general Android procedures. Menu names differ by Android version, phone manufacturer and speaker model, so a label may not look exactly the same on your device.

What pairing actually requires
Bluetooth pairing is a short setup exchange that lets the phone and speaker recognize one another and save a connection record. The speaker must advertise itself before the phone can list it. Simply turning the speaker on is not enough if it is not discoverable.

Discovery controls are model-specific. Some speakers use a dedicated Bluetooth button; others require holding a power or multifunction button. Follow the instructions supplied with the speaker rather than assuming a universal button sequence. If the speaker was previously paired, it may try to reconnect automatically to the last phone or tablet instead of entering discovery mode for a new one.

Pairing mode can also end after a short timeout. Start discovery immediately before scanning from the phone, and repeat the speaker’s documented gesture if the list stays empty. A flashing Bluetooth indicator is common, but light colors, tones and button behavior vary by model.
For iPhone, Apple gives an approximate pairing distance of 33 feet (10 meters). That is a support guideline, not a guaranteed range in every room: walls, other wireless equipment, the phone’s position and the speaker’s orientation can affect performance. Beginning with the devices a few feet apart removes distance as a variable; you can test a longer range after the connection works.
Before you start: a quick setup checklist
- Identify the exact speaker model and keep its instructions available. The manual explains how to enter discovery mode, which PIN to use and whether the speaker has a documented way to clear old pairings.
- Charge the speaker or connect it to power. A power light does not prove that the battery has enough capacity for a pairing attempt.
- Temporarily move the phone and speaker away from other paired phones, tablets, computers, cars and headphones. A nearby device may claim the speaker’s connection first.
- Keep the phone unlocked and place it close to the speaker while the initial exchange is taking place.
- Decide whether you are pairing for media playback or using a speaker that also supports calls. After pairing, check the relevant audio destination rather than relying only on the word “connected.”
Pair a Bluetooth speaker with an iPhone
- Enter discovery mode on the speaker. Turn it on and use its documented pairing gesture. A flashing Bluetooth indicator commonly signals this state, but indicator behavior varies by model.
- Open Bluetooth settings. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on.
- Select the speaker. Wait for its name under the available devices list, then tap it. Keep the Bluetooth page open while the speaker is advertising.
- Complete any code prompt. If the iPhone requests a PIN or passcode, use the value specified in the speaker’s instructions. Do not guess a code when the manufacturer provides one.
- Choose the speaker for playback. Start audio and, if necessary, select the Bluetooth speaker from the app’s playback destination or from Control Center.
Keep the phone and speaker near each other while the initial exchange takes place. If the speaker never appears, reopen the Bluetooth screen and repeat discovery mode rather than leaving the speaker in its normal, non-discoverable state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Apple’s approximate 10-meter guidance describes proximity for the accessory exchange, not a promise that the speaker will work reliably at that distance through walls or around competing wireless equipment. If performance is intermittent, relocate or reorient the phone and speaker and test again at close range.
When an iPhone refuses a previously paired speaker
Open Settings > Bluetooth and tap the speaker in the saved-device list to reconnect. If that fails, tap the information button beside the accessory, choose the option to forget the device, put the speaker into discovery mode again and pair it as a new accessory. Forgetting removes the iPhone’s old pairing record; it does not reset every pairing record stored inside the speaker.
If an installed app is supposed to discover or control the accessory, check that the app has Bluetooth permission in Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth. Basic system pairing does not make a third-party app’s permission automatic. If the speaker pairs in Settings but is absent inside the app, the app permission is a more relevant check than repeating the hardware pairing steps.
Pair a Bluetooth speaker with an Android phone
- Make the speaker discoverable. Turn it on, ensure it has charge, and use the speaker maker’s documented pairing control.
- Open Bluetooth controls. Swipe down to open Quick Settings, then touch and hold Bluetooth. You can also open the Settings app and enter the connected-device or Bluetooth section; the exact path depends on the phone.
- Choose Pair new device. Tap Pair new device, or the equivalent control such as Available devices. If the speaker is missing, use the screen’s refresh control or close and reopen the list.
- Tap the speaker name. Follow Android’s prompts to approve pairing.
- Reconnect later from saved devices. Turn Bluetooth on and select the speaker under previously saved or paired devices.
Google notes that Android steps vary with the operating-system version and supporting hardware. A manufacturer may place the same controls under a different heading, but the sequence remains: enable Bluetooth, scan for a discoverable speaker, select it and approve the request. If your phone offers both a Quick Settings Bluetooth tile and a full Settings page, the full page usually exposes the saved-device and accessory options needed for troubleshooting.

PIN or passcode prompts on Android
Use the code in the speaker’s manual whenever one is supplied. General Android help mentions common passcodes such as 0000 or 1234 when no code is available, but those values are not universal. Stop guessing if the speaker’s instructions specify a different code or the attempt is rejected. Repeated incorrect attempts can leave the old pairing exchange in a failed state, so forget the entry and start discovery again rather than cycling through random numbers.

The underlying radio technology is the same, but phone software, speaker firmware and menu labels are not identical. Treat the table as a map to the relevant control, not a promise that every screen will match. On either platform, the speaker still has to be made discoverable; opening the phone’s Bluetooth page alone cannot force a speaker that is already connected elsewhere to advertise itself.
If the speaker does not appear
Follow these checks before attempting more drastic changes:
- Confirm power. Charge the speaker or connect it to power. A low battery can prevent discovery even when the power light is still on.
- Re-enter pairing mode. A speaker may leave discovery mode after a short timeout. Use its instructions to start the mode again immediately before scanning.
- Move closer. Keep the phone within a few feet for the first attempt. Apple’s approximate upper guideline is 10 meters (33 feet), but obstacles and interference can reduce that distance.
- Refresh the phone’s list. Reopen the Bluetooth page or use Android’s refresh control. A list that was open before the speaker became discoverable may not update instantly.
- Check other devices. The speaker may already be connected to another phone, tablet or computer. Disconnect or unpair it there, then put it back into discovery mode.
- Try a clean restart. Turn the speaker off and on, then restart the phone and scan again.
If the speaker pairs with another phone but not the target iPhone, Apple recommends unpairing it from the other device and trying again. This prevents an existing connection from making the speaker unavailable to the new phone. The same isolation step is useful on Android: turn off Bluetooth temporarily on nearby devices or disconnect the speaker from their saved-device screens.
Do not judge discovery by the speaker’s name alone. Some models use a generic name, a shortened model number or a name previously assigned by another phone. Compare the identifier shown in the speaker’s instructions or on its label, and avoid selecting an unrelated nearby accessory.
If the speaker appears but pairing fails
Clear the old record on the phone
A saved record can become unusable after a phone update, speaker reset or interrupted pairing. On iPhone, use the accessory’s information control in Settings > Bluetooth and choose Forget This Device. On Android, open the saved-device entry and choose Forget or Unpair. Then restart discovery mode on the speaker and pair it again as a new device.
Forgetting on the phone removes that phone’s stored relationship; it does not automatically erase pairings held by the speaker. If the speaker continues reconnecting to an old device, use the manufacturer’s documented speaker-side procedure or disable Bluetooth on that old device while you pair the new one.
Cycle both sides of the connection
Switch phone Bluetooth off, wait briefly, switch it on and scan again. Power-cycle the speaker as well. If the problem persists, restart the phone; this clears temporary Bluetooth service states without deleting other data. Keep the speaker in discovery mode during the fresh scan instead of assuming that a previous failed attempt left it discoverable.
Resolve code and compatibility issues
Enter only a PIN supported by the speaker’s documentation. If pairing still fails, check the speaker manufacturer’s compatibility information and model-specific instructions. Compatibility can depend on the speaker’s firmware and the phone’s software, so a generic reset sequence cannot establish that a particular combination will work. The maker can confirm whether the model supports the phone and whether a firmware or reset procedure applies.

“Connected” but no sound: fix the audio path
A connected label confirms a Bluetooth link, not that the current app is sending media to it. Work through the output path:
- Raise both volume controls. Increase the phone’s media volume and the speaker’s physical volume. Some speakers retain a low volume from a previous device.
- Start playback again. Pause and resume the track or video after the connection is established.
- Select the output on iPhone. Open the app’s playback destination control or Control Center and choose the Bluetooth speaker instead of the phone speaker, headphones or another output.
- Enable Media audio on Android. Open the paired accessory’s settings and turn on Media audio. A phone can remain connected for calls or control while media audio is disabled.
- Check for another active receiver. A different paired headset, car system or speaker may be receiving the sound. Disconnect it, then select the intended speaker.
- Reconnect cleanly. Disconnect and reconnect the accessory. If the output remains silent, forget the pairing on the phone and pair again.
These checks distinguish a radio connection from an audio-routing problem; buying an app, cable or replacement accessory is not a standard fix for a routing error. If only one app is silent while other audio plays through the speaker, check that app’s own playback destination before changing the Bluetooth pairing.
When a speaker used to connect but stopped
- Check that the speaker still has charge and that the phone is within a short distance.
- Turn Bluetooth on and select the speaker from the phone’s saved devices.
- Power-cycle the speaker and restart the phone if the saved-device connection fails.
- Forget or unpair the speaker on the phone, put the speaker back into discovery mode and pair afresh.
- Look for a second device that has taken the speaker’s connection.
Some manufacturers document a speaker-side procedure for clearing stored pairings, but there is no universal reset gesture. Use the model’s own instructions; do not assume that holding a particular button combination will have the same effect on another speaker. A reset can remove every stored phone from the speaker, so use it only when the maker’s instructions identify the correct procedure and explain its effect.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Scanning before discovery mode: the phone cannot list a speaker that is not advertising.
- Pairing from too far away: start close, then test range after the first successful connection.
- Leaving an old device connected: a speaker may reconnect to a tablet, computer or car and disappear from the new phone’s practical reach.
- Assuming “connected” means “playing”: verify the output destination and media setting.
- Guessing PINs or reset combinations: use the speaker maker’s instructions; there is no universal code or reset gesture.
- Buying software to solve a settings problem: standard pairing and troubleshooting use the phone’s built-in controls.
When to contact the speaker maker
Contact the manufacturer when the model’s discovery control is unclear, its documented PIN fails, compatibility is uncertain, or the speaker will not enter pairing mode after charging and power-cycling. Provide the exact speaker model, phone model, operating-system version, whether the speaker appears in the scan list and which troubleshooting steps you completed. That information lets support distinguish a control sequence problem from a hardware or firmware fault.
If the speaker cannot be discovered by any compatible phone after a full charge and the maker’s documented reset procedure, replacement may be reasonable. Pairing itself does not require a paid app, subscription, special cable or accessory. Consider a new speaker only when the existing one is confirmed faulty, unsuitable or being replaced; a purchase is not the normal remedy for a stale pairing or incorrect audio route.

- Forget stale pairings and disconnect other phones or tablets that may already own the speaker.
- A Bluetooth connection can exist without media playback; verify the output destination and Android’s Media audio setting.
- Use the speaker maker’s instructions for model-specific buttons, PINs, compatibility and reset behavior.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Bluetooth speaker not showing up on my phone?
Make sure the speaker is charged, powered on and in its model-specific discovery mode. Keep it close to the phone, refresh or reopen the Bluetooth list, and disconnect it from any other phone, tablet or computer. Then power-cycle both devices and scan again.
How close should my iPhone be to the speaker when pairing?
Apple gives an approximate pairing distance of 33 feet (10 meters). Start within a few feet, because walls, interference and device orientation can reduce usable range.
