Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The right distribution method depends on what your command-line tool is built with, which operating systems and CPU architectures you support, and who will own upgrades. For a tool used by developers on both Linux and macOS, Homebrew provides one familiar package-manager route. A Python application is usually better installed with pipx, which gives it an isolated environment. A self-contained binary or installer can hide language-runtime details, but you must document its install location, supported architectures, PATH changes, update mechanism, and removal procedure.
Decide those responsibilities before publishing anything. Installation is not complete when a file is copied; the command must be discoverable on PATH, upgrades must have one clear owner, and users need a predictable way to uninstall it.

Start with a support and ownership decision
There is no packaging format that is independent of implementation language and user expectations. Write down the support contract for your tool before choosing a command or archive format.

Define the platforms you actually support
- Operating systems: macOS and Linux are not one platform. Linux users may be on different distributions, shells, and library versions; macOS users may have different CPU architectures.
- CPU architectures: list every architecture for which you publish a binary or have verified a build. Do not imply that a package manager’s availability guarantees that your artifact runs on every machine.
- Runtime prerequisites: state whether users need Python, Rust, a compiler, system libraries, or no runtime at all.
- Shell and PATH behavior: identify the directory containing the executable and the shell configuration file that must include it.
- Upgrade and removal owner: the same mechanism that installs the tool should normally perform its upgrades and uninstall.
Homebrew’s Linux documentation describes architecture support tiers, including ARM32 as Tier 3 and 32-bit x86 as unsupported. Treat those statements as Homebrew-specific support information and check its current tiers before promising support for a particular Linux machine. Your own release matrix may be narrower or broader.

Choose an installation owner
| Route | Best fit | What you must explain |
|---|---|---|
| Homebrew formula | A tool whose users already use Homebrew and whose build or runtime dependencies can be expressed in a formula | macOS and Linux prefixes, compiler and development-tool requirements, supported architectures, PATH setup, and brew-based upgrade and removal commands |
| Language-specific installer | An application distributed through a language ecosystem; pipx is the documented Python example | How to install the language package manager, how the application is isolated, the directory added to PATH, and how that manager upgrades or removes the app |
| Standalone binary or installer | A maintainer can publish a self-contained artifact or a supported installer for each target system | Install location, architectures, integrity checks when available, PATH changes, update source, and a complete uninstall procedure |
| Native Linux distribution package | A tool that must integrate with a particular distribution’s package database and policy | Separate maintenance for distribution families and releases. Do not promise universal Linux instructions without distro-specific testing. |
Compare each candidate on four axes: the systems and architectures it covers, prerequisites, who owns future changes, and how reliably it puts the command on PATH. “Easiest” and “most secure” depend on the users and systems you are targeting.
Using Homebrew on macOS and Linux
Homebrew is useful when you want one recognizable package-manager experience across macOS, Linux, and Linux on Windows Subsystem for Linux. It is not a universal Linux system package manager: Linux users still need a working compiler and standard development tools, and a package may be built locally rather than downloaded as a prebuilt bottle.
Know the prefixes and prerequisites
The Homebrew Linux documentation identifies /home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew as the current default Linux prefix. Its installation documentation lists /opt/homebrew as the default prefix for Apple Silicon macOS. A different installation choice, shell, or architecture can produce a different path, so use the prefix printed by the installer rather than hard-coding one in your own instructions.
On Linux, Homebrew expects a working system C compiler and standard development tools. Its guide gives prerequisite examples for Debian and Ubuntu such as build-essential, procps, curl, file, and git, and also discusses Fedora, RHEL/CentOS Stream, and Arch. Package names and availability can change with a distribution release; tell readers to follow the current Homebrew prerequisite list for their distribution.
Make the brew command available in every new shell
Running the installer is only part of the setup. Homebrew’s Linux instructions show this initialization for the default Linux prefix:
eval "$(/home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/bin/brew shellenv)"
The command must also be persisted in the startup file used by the reader’s shell. For Bash, the guide shows adding the corresponding brew shellenv line to .bashrc; for Zsh, use the appropriate .zshrc file. The exact line should come from the installer’s output because the prefix can differ. Open a new shell, then run brew --version and brew --prefix to confirm that the expected executable is being found.
Package your tool as a formula
A Homebrew formula should declare the source or release artifact, the build steps, runtime dependencies, and the executable that users will invoke. Keep platform-specific assumptions visible: a formula that works on macOS may require a different dependency or build path on Linux. If Linux lacks a suitable bottle, users may compile the formula locally, so your support statement must include the compiler and development-tool requirement.

Tell users that the formula is the source of truth for upgrades and removal. Avoid instructing them to replace a brew-managed file manually; that creates two competing owners and can leave stale files behind. If you publish a tap or another non-default source, identify it explicitly and explain how it is added and removed.
When Homebrew is the wrong abstraction
Homebrew is a poor fit when your application needs a language-specific dependency environment that should not be shared, when you cannot maintain a formula for both operating systems, or when your users cannot install development prerequisites. In those cases, pipx or a standalone release may give a clearer contract.
Installing a Python command-line application with pipx
The Python Packaging User Guide recommends avoiding a single global environment for unrelated applications. Installing every application’s dependencies into that environment can create conflicts and can interfere with operating-system Python packages. pipx addresses this by creating a separate virtual environment for each application while exposing the application’s command through a directory on PATH.
Install pipx using the platform’s package manager
On macOS, the current pipx instructions describe installing it with Homebrew:
brew install pipx
On supported Linux distributions, the documented examples include:
sudo apt install pipx
sudo dnf install pipx
Package availability and package names are distribution-sensitive. Prefer the distribution package when it is available rather than forcing a system-wide Python installation with a language package manager.
Handle externally managed Python environments
Distributions adopting PEP 668 mark their system Python as externally managed. The pipx documentation calls out Ubuntu 23.04 and later, Debian 12 and later, and Fedora 38 and later as examples where a direct pip install --user may fail. That failure is a protection, not a reason to bypass the distribution’s package policy with sudo. Install pipx through the distribution or another documented isolated method, then let pipx manage the application environment.

Expose the application on PATH
After installing pipx, run:
pipx ensurepath
This adds pipx’s application directory to PATH. Start a new shell, or reload the shell configuration as instructed by pipx, before testing the command. Verify both layers separately: pipx --version confirms pipx is available, while running your application’s command confirms that its executable directory is on PATH.

Install, upgrade, and remove the app through pipx
Publish your application as a normal Python package, then have users install that package with pipx. For an illustrative package named mytool, the command is:
pipx install mytool
The package name and the command users type do not have to be identical, so document both explicitly. A pipx environment keeps the application’s dependencies independent from other pipx applications and from the operating system’s Python packages. Users should use pipx’s own upgrade and uninstall operations for that application, not a second installer or a manual deletion of its virtual environment.
For projects rather than end-user applications, use a project virtual environment instead. Homebrew’s language guidance distinguishes project environments from pipx-installed command-line applications; do not ask users to install a development project’s dependencies globally merely to obtain a CLI.
Publishing a standalone binary or installer
A standalone release is appropriate when you can provide a self-contained artifact for each supported target and want users to avoid learning a language ecosystem. It transfers more responsibility to you: users need an accurate install location, architecture list, PATH instructions, update policy, and uninstall steps.
Choose the artifact and installation location
Publish one clearly named artifact per supported operating system and architecture, or provide an installer that selects the correct artifact. State whether the installer places the executable in a user-owned directory or a system directory and whether administrator privileges are required. A user-owned location generally avoids permission changes, but it still must be added to PATH.
Do not claim support for an architecture merely because the operating system can run other software. Test the exact binary and record the result in a release matrix. If an architecture is unsupported, make the installer fail with a useful message rather than silently installing an incompatible file.

Treat install scripts as executable code
A downloaded shell script can change files and shell configuration, so direct readers to the project’s official domain or official release artifacts. Explain how to inspect the script before execution. If the project publishes checksums or signatures, document the verification command; do not imply that such verification exists when it has not been provided.
The uv project is a concrete example of several distribution choices: its documentation describes a standalone installer for macOS and Linux, Homebrew availability, installation from the Python package index with an isolated environment such as pipx, and installation through Cargo. Cargo builds from source and requires a compatible Rust toolchain. uv’s documentation also distinguishes standalone installations that can self-update from installations made through another method, which should be upgraded through that package manager. That distinction is a useful model for documenting any standalone CLI.

Choose one update path for each installation method. A self-updating standalone installation should say where it obtains updates and how a user can disable or inspect that behavior. An installation made by Homebrew, pipx, or another package manager should be upgraded by that manager. Do not tell a user to run a self-update command on a package-manager-owned installation unless the project explicitly supports that combination.
Document removal as carefully as installation
List every file or directory created by the installer, including shell-profile edits, caches, symlinks, and downloaded archives. Explain how to remove the executable and how to remove the PATH line without deleting unrelated configuration. If an installer has no automated uninstall command, provide a safe manual sequence and identify the exact installation directory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PATH is part of the product
A successful copy of an executable is not a successful installation if the shell cannot find it. Your documentation should show the expected command, the directory that contains it, and a verification step.
- Homebrew: initialize the active prefix with that prefix’s
brew shellenv, then persist it in the shell’s startup file. - pipx: run
pipx ensurepath, open a new shell, and verify the application’s command. - Standalone installer: state the exact bin directory and provide a shell-specific PATH edit. Do not assume Bash when many macOS users use Zsh.
When troubleshooting, ask the user to run the shell’s command lookup (for example, command -v toolname) and to print PATH. This distinguishes a missing executable from a broken application. If the command resolves to an older copy, remove the stale installation or reorder PATH entries rather than reinstalling blindly.

Upgrade and uninstall policy
| Installation method | Upgrade owner | Removal principle |
|---|---|---|
| Homebrew formula | Homebrew and the formula source | Use Homebrew’s removal operation so its records and linked files remain consistent |
| pipx application | pipx and the Python package source | Remove the named pipx application and its isolated environment through pipx |
| Standalone installer | The installer or the project’s documented self-update mechanism | Remove the documented binary, support files, and any PATH edit |
| Native distribution package | The distribution package manager | Use that distribution’s package database and follow its configuration-file policy |
Put these instructions next to the initial install command, not in an obscure maintenance page. Users often copy the first command they see; if upgrade ownership is ambiguous, they can end up with multiple versions in different directories.

Release and documentation checklist
For maintainers
- List supported operating systems, distribution families, shells, and CPU architectures.
- Record the runtime, compiler, and system-library prerequisites for each route.
- Choose whether Homebrew, pipx, a standalone artifact, or a native package is the primary path for each audience.
- Build or install on every claimed target and test the command from a fresh shell.
- Verify that the executable’s name, package name, and documentation are unambiguous.
- Document PATH changes, upgrade commands, and uninstall steps together.
- State which installation methods can self-update and which must be upgraded by their package manager.
- For scripts and binaries, provide inspection or artifact-verification guidance when the project supports it.
- Explain unsupported architectures and known platform-specific limitations instead of allowing a partial install.
For users
- Choose the route that matches the tool’s implementation and your existing package-manager habits.
- Install prerequisites using the current instructions for your operating system and distribution.
- Complete the shell setup printed by the installer, including the correct PATH entry.
- Open a new shell and verify the package manager and the tool separately.
- Record the installation method so you use the same owner for upgrades and removal.
- Keep only one active installation unless you intentionally need parallel versions.
Troubleshooting common failures
command not found after installation
Check whether the package manager itself is on PATH, then whether the application’s bin directory is on PATH. Run command -v brew, command -v pipx, or command -v toolname as appropriate. Re-run the relevant shell setup, start a new shell, and inspect the actual prefix instead of assuming the default.
Homebrew fails while compiling on Linux
Confirm that the system C compiler and standard development tools are installed for the Linux distribution. A formula may be built locally when a bottle is unavailable. Check the current Homebrew prerequisite list and the formula’s dependencies before treating the failure as an application bug.
pip install --user is rejected
On a distribution with an externally managed Python environment, use the distribution’s pipx package or another documented isolated installation. Do not use sudo as a workaround for an environment policy; it can make ownership and future removal harder to reason about.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The wrong version runs
Use command -v toolname and inspect every matching path. Remove or unlink the obsolete copy through its original manager, then open a new shell. Reinstalling without identifying the old path can leave the same conflict in place.
A standalone installer cannot be reversed
Locate the installer’s documented binary directory and shell-profile change. Remove only the files it created, restore the PATH entry, and retain any user data unless the project explicitly identifies it as disposable. If the project provides no uninstall guidance, ask the maintainer to document the file list before recommending the installer to others.
Which route should you publish?
Use Homebrew when your audience already uses it and you can maintain a formula whose dependencies and build behavior are correct on both operating systems. Use pipx when the deliverable is a Python command-line application and dependency isolation matters. Use standalone artifacts when you can test and support each target binary and are prepared to own installation, updates, and removal. Offer native Linux packages only when you are ready to maintain distribution-specific metadata and policies.
Whichever route you choose, publish one primary path and label alternatives clearly. A short, accurate support matrix and an explicit PATH and upgrade policy are more valuable than a long list of untested install commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can users install the same CLI with more than one method?
They can, but doing so often creates duplicate executables and unclear upgrade ownership. Recommend one primary method for each platform and tell users to remove an older copy before switching.
Should a Python CLI be installed into the operating system’s Python environment?
Generally no. The Python Packaging User Guide recommends isolated application environments such as pipx to avoid dependency conflicts and interference with distribution-managed Python packages.
Is a standalone install automatically safer than a package manager?
No. Safety depends on the project’s release process, artifact verification, privileges, and update design. Treat downloaded installer scripts as executable code and document how users can inspect or verify what they run.
