How to Pack a TV for Moving Without Its Original Packaging

Use a fitted, double-walled flat-screen TV carton with foam corner protectors whenever you can. Measure the television first, including its depth, and choose a carton that matches those dimensions. Cover the screen with a soft protective layer, keep adhesive tape off the panel, fill every void so the set cannot move, and transport it upright.

If a purpose-built carton is unavailable, wrap the television with substantial cushioning, add corner protection, and immobilize it upright between sturdy flat objects. That is a fallback—not a proven equivalent to a fitted box. For an unusually large, thin, valuable, or difficult-to-handle set, professional packing is the safer option.

Why a fitted TV box is the safest choice

A flat-screen television is wide, rigid and comparatively thin. Its glass or layered display can be damaged by a point impact at a corner, pressure from a strap or another item, or bending while the set is carried. A fitted carton provides a rigid outer shell, keeps cushioning in the intended position and gives you a surface that can be braced during transport.

The strongest general recommendation in the available moving guidance is an adjustable, double-walled flat-screen TV carton with foam corner protectors. The carton must fit the particular set; “fits a 55-inch TV” is not enough if the television is unusually deep or has a protruding rear housing.

U-Haul describes cartons for televisions from 20 to 86 inches. In its product guidance, the large carton is for 32–70-inch sets and the extra-large carton is for 70–86-inch sets. Those are that retailer’s product ranges, not an industry-wide sizing standard. U-Haul also says its own TV box will not fit a television deeper than five inches, so measure depth rather than relying on diagonal screen size alone.

Home Depot likewise recommends purchasing a TV box sized to the set. Neither source establishes a universal price, stock level or protection guarantee, so verify the carton’s internal dimensions and the retailer’s current availability before buying.

Measure and prepare the television before wrapping

1. Record the model and dimensions

Find the model number on the rear label or in the television’s settings, then consult the model’s manual. Measure the screen diagonally to identify the nominal size, but also record the full outside width, height and depth, including any rear bulge, side-mounted controls or attached hardware. Compare those measurements with the carton’s usable interior dimensions, not merely its advertised screen-size range.

Leave enough room for the screen cover, corner foam and any cushioning required by the carton instructions. If the carton cannot accommodate the television without forcing the flaps or compressing the panel, use a larger compatible carton rather than trying to make the smaller one work.

2. Photograph connections and remove accessories

Before disconnecting anything, photograph the rear of the set and each cable connection. Label the cables, remote control and power cord, and place small screws or other hardware in a sealed bag with the television’s model noted on it. Remove the stand or legs if the model allows it and the manual calls for removal; do not leave a heavy stand attached if it can shift against the panel.

3. Clear a safe packing area

Use a clean, flat surface large enough to support the entire television. Keep the display face away from tools, buckles and rough flooring. Have another person help with a large set so that no one has to grip the panel by its corners or twist the chassis while lifting.

Supplies and what each one does

Supply Purpose Important condition
Adjustable, double-walled TV carton Rigid external protection and a controlled fit Match the television’s width, height and depth; U-Haul states a five-inch maximum depth for its own box.
Foam corner protectors Distribute impact away from the panel’s corners Use a protector at every required corner and keep it seated while the carton is closed.
TV cover or soft screen-protection layer Prevents abrasion against the display It must lie flat; do not put adhesive tape on the screen.
Bubble cushioning Adds impact absorption when specified or when using the no-carton fallback U-Haul’s fallback calls for at least three inches of bubble cushioning.
Quilted moving blanket Adds a padded outer layer Use it over the cushioning or screen protection without creating pressure points.
Stretch wrap Holds a blanket and protective layers in place Wrap the protective material, not the bare display; keep tension moderate.
Packing tape Seals the carton or secures wrap Keep it on the carton or on the protective wrap and TV case, never directly on the screen.
Two sturdy, flat objects Creates a rigid sandwich for a no-box move They must be broad and stable enough to prevent sliding, tipping and concentrated pressure.

Step-by-step: packing the TV in a fitted carton

  1. Confirm the manual and carton. Read the television’s model-specific packing instructions and check the carton’s interior dimensions. Follow the manual where it differs from generic moving advice.
  2. Disconnect and label. Photograph the wiring, unplug all cables, label them and bag the remote, screws and other small parts.
  3. Remove the stand when appropriate. Detach the stand or legs if the manual permits and the stand would otherwise create a pressure or shifting hazard. Keep the hardware with the labeled accessories.
  4. Protect the display. Fit a TV cover or another soft, clean screen-protection layer. The covering should protect the surface without trapping hard objects against it.
  5. Install the corner foam. Place the supplied or compatible foam protectors on the television’s corners. Check that none has slipped onto the active display area.
  6. Prepare the carton. Assemble the double-walled carton according to its flap pattern. Tape the bottom seam thoroughly enough to support the set and cushioning; do not allow tape to contact the television.
  7. Place the television in the carton. With a helper, lower the protected set into the carton in the orientation specified by the carton and television manual. Do not force a corner through a tight opening.
  8. Fill voids. Add the carton’s intended padding or other soft cushioning to empty spaces so the television cannot slide or rattle. Do not fill gaps with hard objects that could press into the panel.
  9. Close and seal. Fold the carton flaps in their designed order and tape the seams. Mark the exterior as fragile and indicate the upright orientation.
  10. Test the pack before loading. With another person supporting the carton, make a small controlled movement. If the set shifts inside, reopen the carton and add or reposition cushioning rather than accepting movement.

No original box? Use this fallback carefully

A blanket by itself is not a fitted TV package. Without a rigid carton, the set is more exposed to side impacts and to pressure from neighboring cargo, so the quality of the cushioning and the way the television is immobilized become critical.

U-Haul’s no-carton sequence

  1. Cover the television with at least three inches of bubble cushioning.
  2. Place a quilted moving blanket around the bubble-cushioned set.
  3. Position the wrapped television between two flat, sturdy objects so it cannot slide or tip.
  4. Secure that assembly so the objects cannot move toward the display during transport.

The “three inches” figure is U-Haul’s stated fallback guidance, not a universal test standard. Use the same principle on every exposed side and avoid compressing the screen to achieve the thickness.

Home Depot’s no-carton sequence

  1. Apply two or three protective layers over the screen.
  2. Fit foam corner pads.
  3. Wrap the television in a moving blanket.
  4. Use stretch wrap to hold the blanket and protective layers in place.
  5. Secure the wrapped set between stable, flat supports so it remains upright and cannot shift.

Home Depot’s sequence differs from U-Haul’s in the stated materials and order. Both approaches require more than a single blanket, corner protection and immobilization. Neither source presents blanket wrapping as tested equivalent to a fitted carton.

How to tape a no-box wrap

Put tape over the protective wrap and onto the television’s case only where needed to hold the wrap. Never apply adhesive tape to the screen surface. Tape can leave residue, pull at a surface coating or apply a concentrated force when removed. Keep stretch-wrap tension firm enough to hold the blanket but not so tight that it bends the chassis or presses the corners into the display.

Load and transport the television upright

Keep the television vertical during carrying and in the moving vehicle. The official U-Haul packing guide states: “You should refrain from laying your TV down flat when you transport it, even when it’s protected by a TV Box.” A flat position can expose the broad panel to bending or to pressure from cargo above it.

Carry it without twisting

  • Use two people for a large or awkward set.
  • Grip the carton or the protected edges, not the center of the display.
  • Keep the route clear before lifting so you do not have to pivot around furniture or stairs.
  • Set the carton down gently and keep it vertical between moves.

Brace the carton or wrapped set

Place the television against a stable wall or between sturdy, flat items that are taller and broad enough to stop it from sliding. Fill side gaps so the carton cannot rock, and keep heavy or sharp-edged cargo away from the panel. The U-Haul and Home Depot guidance both emphasize preventing movement; U-Haul also describes tying the carton to truck rails where appropriate.

Do not rely on the vehicle’s wall alone if the carton can tip. A strap should restrain the outer carton or support, with padding between the strap and the carton; it should not squeeze directly across the screen.

Fitted carton versus no-carton fallback

Factor Fitted TV carton No-carton wrap
External protection Rigid double-wall coverage with a controlled enclosure Blanket and cushioning only; exposed to nearby cargo unless rigid supports are added
Fit Adjustable cartons are designed around TV size ranges; depth must still be checked Depends on the materials and supports you assemble
Depth compatibility U-Haul states its own carton will not fit sets deeper than five inches No stated universal limit; the supports must clear the television without pressing it
Materials Carton, corner foam, screen cover and void filler Bubble cushioning or multiple screen layers, corner foam, blanket, stretch wrap and flat supports
Movement control Fill carton voids, seal it and brace the upright carton Immobilize the wrapped set between sturdy flat objects
Availability and cost Current price and stock are not stated in the cited guidance Uses materials you may already have, but material quantity and suitability vary
Best use Preferred for ordinary moves and valuable or fragile sets Last-resort method when a correctly sized carton cannot be obtained

Check the television’s own manual

Generic moving instructions cannot replace the model manual. One Philips-branded manual instructs owners to follow its carton diagram, save the front cardboard for moving or shipping, and avoid packing the stand on the same side as the screen. That manual says the front cardboard is included only with select models, so do not assume every television has that piece or that the instruction applies to another model.

If the manual specifies a stand position, foam insert, front panel or lifting method, use that arrangement. A manufacturer’s diagram can account for a chassis shape that a generic carton guide cannot.

Common packing mistakes and fixes

The carton fits the diagonal size but not the depth

Symptom: The rear housing pushes against the carton or prevents the flaps from closing.

Fix: Stop and measure the carton’s usable depth. Obtain a larger or different carton; do not crush the rear housing or force the flaps. U-Haul’s five-inch depth limit applies to its own TV box and should not be generalized to every carton.

Tape is touching the screen

Symptom: Tape is used to hold a cover directly on the display.

When professional packing makes sense

Professional movers commonly offer television packing as a service category. It is worth considering when the screen is exceptionally large or valuable, when the route includes stairs or a long carry, or when you cannot provide two people and a stable way to brace the set. A service listing confirms that the category exists, but it does not establish universal workmanship, insurance terms or pricing. Ask exactly what materials, upright handling and damage coverage are included before booking.

If you hire help, still provide the model number and dimensions and point out any manufacturer-specific packing instructions. A professional service should not remove the need to verify fit and orientation.

Final pre-loading checklist

  • Model number and manual checked.
  • Diagonal size, full width, height and depth measured.
  • Carton’s internal dimensions verified, including depth.
  • Cables photographed, labeled and bagged.
  • Stand removed or positioned exactly as the manual requires.
  • Screen covered with a soft protective layer.
  • Foam corner protectors installed.
  • All carton voids filled so the set cannot shift.
  • No adhesive tape touching the display.
  • Carton sealed and marked fragile/upright, or no-box supports secured.
  • Television loaded vertically, braced and kept away from heavy cargo.
