You can overclock a monitor only within the limits and procedure its manufacturer supports. Some displays include a built-in Overclock option in the on-screen display (OSD); creating a custom resolution or refresh rate beyond the display’s intended range is a different, riskier practice. Check your exact monitor’s documentation first, then enable any supported OSD option and select an available refresh rate in your graphics settings. There is no universal safe uplift or maximum rate.
What monitor overclocking means
“Overclocking” can describe two different things. A manufacturer may provide an OSD setting that lets a particular monitor operate above its standard panel specification. Dell, for example, documents an Overclock option for the G2723H. Alternatively, a user may create a custom resolution or refresh rate outside the monitor’s designed operating range. BenQ ZOWIE warns that such custom settings may damage the display and may affect warranty coverage. These cases should not be treated as interchangeable.

The supported modes, setup steps, connection requirements, and warranty terms vary by model. A rate documented for one monitor is not a general limit for another.
Before you change the refresh rate
- Find the exact model and revision. Use the product label or system display information, then consult the current manual or manufacturer support page for that model.
- Check the resolution and input. A refresh rate may be available only at certain resolutions or through a particular connection. One reviewed monitor manual, for example, says its Overclock feature works only over DisplayPort; that is a model-specific requirement, not a universal rule.
- Confirm the setting is manufacturer-supported. Prefer a documented OSD Overclock option and its listed modes. Do not assume that a custom rate outside the documented range is safe simply because a graphics utility accepts it.
- Know how to recover. Before enabling an overclock, locate the monitor’s instructions for disabling it or reducing its maximum rate if the image disappears.
How to enable a monitor’s built-in Overclock option
- Open the monitor’s OSD. Use the physical buttons or joystick on the display and follow the menu path shown in its manual. Menu names and locations differ by model.
- Enable Overclock only if the manual documents it. Dell’s G2723H instructions describe this kind of manufacturer-provided setting. Do not use another model’s instructions as a substitute for your own manual.
- Allow the display to restart if prompted. One reviewed monitor manual says the display may reboot after Overclock is enabled. Follow the prompt and wait for the image to return.
- Select a refresh rate exposed for that display. In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Display > Change resolution, select the monitor, and choose one of the refresh rates shown for it. Available options depend on the monitor, connection, resolution, and system configuration. NVIDIA’s documentation says that with G-SYNC enabled, its refresh-rate control is set to the highest rate available for that display.
- Check the result in ordinary use. Confirm the selected resolution and refresh rate in your operating system or graphics settings, then use the display normally. If the image is unstable or abnormal, revert to a lower rate or disable Overclock using the monitor’s documented recovery steps.
The monitor’s OSD and the computer’s graphics settings may both need adjustment: enabling the monitor feature does not necessarily select the higher rate in the operating system.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
If you see a blank or abnormal image
A missing image after changing a mode does not mean the monitor can use that rate. Follow the recovery procedure in the exact model’s manual rather than repeatedly trying custom values.
- No image: ASUS advises disconnecting the signal cable and using the OSD to try a lower maximum refresh rate. Follow the steps for your model, reconnect the signal cable as instructed, and select a lower rate.
- Distorted or otherwise abnormal image: A reviewed monitor manual advises disabling Overclock when the image is abnormal. Use the monitor’s OSD to turn the feature off or reduce its maximum rate.
- The setting is unavailable: Check whether the documented feature requires a specific input, resolution, or other configuration. Do not infer that a missing option can safely be replaced with an unsupported custom mode.
Custom refresh rates and warranty risk
BenQ ZOWIE warns that a custom resolution or Hz setting outside the monitor’s designed operating range may damage the monitor and may make it ineligible for warranty coverage. That warning concerns settings outside the designed range; it does not establish that every manufacturer-supported OSD overclock damages a monitor or automatically voids every warranty. Check the terms that apply to your exact model and region before changing settings.

- Incredible Images: The Acer KB272 G0bi 27" monitor with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail.
- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting. A 120Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver smooth 2D motion scenes in gaming and video.

Warranty consequences depend on the manufacturer and product. A graphics-card vendor’s overclocking warranty statement is not evidence of the warranty terms for a monitor made by another company. Likewise, a manual’s warning that the manufacturer does not guarantee an Overclock feature should be applied only when the manual’s product identity and current applicability are confirmed.
What to expect from an overclock
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a typical refresh-rate increase, a universal safe ceiling, or a guaranteed result. Your usable modes depend on the specific monitor and system. Treat only the rates documented by the manufacturer or exposed for the selected display configuration as candidates, and revert if operation is unstable.

AMD recommends making small increments and testing stability after each adjustment in its guidance for GPU overclocking. That is GPU-tuning advice, not a monitor-specific procedure; it should not be used to justify pushing a monitor beyond its documented range.
