The most reliable system is to treat each soundtrack release as an album, preserve its credited artists in tags, and use folders only for navigation. Keep the game title in a separate custom field when your player supports one, retain disc and track numbers, and verify every automated match before saving. This keeps albums together without erasing composer, performer, edition, or sequence information.
Use a two-layer system: tags for meaning, folders for navigation
Music players read embedded metadata, not your folder intentions. A directory named after a game can be useful when browsing a file manager, but it cannot reliably tell a player which tracks belong to an album, who performed them, or which edition you own. Make tags the authoritative description of each file, then generate a predictable folder and filename layout from those tags.

Organize around the soundtrack release rather than the game alone. A game may have an original score, a vocal album, a remaster, a promotional mini-album, and several regional or anniversary editions. Keep those releases separate whenever their track lists, credits, dates, labels, or identifiers differ. The album title should be the title printed for that release, even when it is not identical to the game title.

- Optional game fields: a way to browse by game or series without changing the release’s official music metadata.
If you later move the files to a different drive or reorganize directories, a well-tagged library remains understandable. A folder-only system does not.

Prepare safely before changing a library
Batch tagging can alter hundreds of files at once. Make a working copy or backup before importing, matching, or renaming anything. Keep the original files untouched until you have checked the results in your normal player.
- Copy the soundtrack directories to a second location or snapshot the library.
- Decide which file types and directories are in scope; do not mix unrelated music into the same batch.
- Choose a consistent spelling policy for your own optional game or series fields before editing.
- Make a small test batch first, including at least one multi-disc release and one track with a different performer.
- Confirm that your music player displays album artist, artist, disc number, and track number as expected.
Keep the backup until you have played representative tracks, inspected album grouping, and confirmed that artwork and filenames point to the intended release.
Set the essential tags
Use the following fields as the baseline. Names vary slightly between formats, but the concepts are the same.

Release metadata can include MusicBrainz identifiers and a release type in addition to the fields above. These identifiers are useful for distinguishing editions, but they should describe the specific release you actually own.
Preserve credits instead of inventing a “game artist”
Album artist and track artist answer different questions. Album artist groups the release as credited; artist identifies the credit for a particular track. A soundtrack album might credit an orchestra, a record label project, a composer, or several performers at album level while listing a different vocalist on one track.
MusicBrainz release style guidance puts it plainly: “In general, you should just enter the artist(s) as shown on the release (see the guidelines for artist credits).” It also states: “Track artists should follow the release artist, except where another artist is credited in the track listing of the release.” Apply those rules to the credit printed or officially listed for your edition.

Do not set album artist to the game title merely because it makes a player’s artist view look tidy. Doing so hides the actual release credit and makes searches for a composer or performer less reliable. If you want a game-centric view, add a separate game-title or franchise tag and use a player’s grouping, smart playlist, or custom-column feature.
Example credit layout
Suppose a release is credited to “Studio Orchestra” at album level, while one track lists “Studio Orchestra featuring A. Singer.” Use the release title in ALBUM, “Studio Orchestra” in ALBUMARTIST, and the track’s fuller credit in ARTIST for that song. Put the game name in an optional custom field such as GAME_TITLE if your player supports it.
Keep editions and versions separate
Automated album lookup is release-oriented. Selecting the wrong edition can produce a plausible-looking album with incorrect dates, track order, disc count, or credits. Two releases with the same cover title may still be distinct because one is a remaster, regional pressing, digital edition, bonus-disc set, or reissue.
Before saving a match, compare:
- Album or release title, including volume and edition wording.
- Release artist and each track artist.
- Number of discs and the number of tracks on each disc.
- Track titles and their order.
- Release date, country, label, and available identifiers.
- Whether bonus tracks or alternate mixes are present on your files.
If an edition is not represented by the selected release, do not force a near match simply because most titles look right. Keep the files in a separate album and enter only the edition details you can establish. A missing value is safer than a guessed date, country, or label.
Choose a folder and filename template
Folders should make a directory listing readable without duplicating every piece of metadata. These templates work for many libraries:

For a single-disc album, you can omit the disc component or use a consistent value such as 1-01. For multi-disc sets, retain both components so a normal alphabetical sort follows the intended sequence. Include an edition or release detail in the directory when two releases share a name.

Long artist strings and inconsistent credit formatting can make filenames unwieldy. Add an artist to filenames only if your player or filesystem workflow benefits from it; keep the full credit in tags regardless. Avoid putting the game title into every track title, because that creates clutter in players and makes later corrections harder.
MusicBrainz Picard can rename files and place them in directories using a naming script. Generate paths from the tags after you have confirmed the correct release, rather than using the folder name to decide the metadata.
Use MusicBrainz Picard for album-based tagging
Picard’s workflow has four broad stages: retrieve album information, match files to tracks, select or confirm cover art, and save the updated files. Saving can also rename files and move them according to your configured naming and directory options.

- Open Picard and add files or a folder. Import only the soundtrack batch you intend to process. Leave unrelated albums out of the same operation.
- Cluster unmatched files. Clustering groups files that appear to belong to one album so you can search for a release rather than matching every file independently.
- Look up the album. Select the intended release, paying attention to edition, country, date, disc count, and track list. If your files have weak or missing tags, Picard can also scan them with AcoustID to help identify possible matches.
- Inspect the match confidence. A green-looking or otherwise confident result is not a substitute for checking the release identity. Compare the proposed album and track values with your source files and physical or official listing.
- Compare original and proposed metadata when uncertain. Picard’s matching view lets you review what will change. Stop if a track title, artist, disc number, or edition does not fit.
- Correct ambiguous assignments manually. Drag a file to the correct track when automatic matching places it incorrectly. Check bonus tracks, alternate versions, and similarly named songs one by one.
- Select appropriate cover art. Use artwork for the particular release when available. Do not use a generic game image if it misrepresents a separate album edition.
- Save only after review. Confirm the release, track order, credits, and artwork, then save. If configured, Picard will write tags and apply your filename and directory template.
Picard is designed to identify an album release, not to infer your preferred game hierarchy. You remain responsible for selecting the right release and correcting uncertain matches.
Protect multi-disc sequencing
Multi-disc soundtracks are easiest to browse when each file has both a disc number and a track number. Store the values in the dedicated fields rather than typing “Disc 2” into the album or title. Players that understand these fields can display one album with separate discs; file managers can still sort correctly when your filename begins with both numbers.
If your player merges discs unexpectedly, inspect whether it reads disc number and whether all files share exactly the same album and album-artist values. If it does not support disc metadata, a folder per disc is a practical navigation aid, but do not remove the embedded disc and track values.

Artwork is release-specific presentation
Cover art affects how an album is recognized in a player, but it does not define the metadata. Confirm that the selected image belongs to the release edition you tagged. A remaster, regional release, or bonus-disc set may have different artwork even when the core title is similar.

Understand file-format differences
Common concepts such as album artist, track number, release type, and disc number map to different tag implementations depending on the audio format. A field that appears as “Album Artist” in one application may have a different underlying name or storage convention in another.
After saving a test batch, reopen the files in the player you actually use. Check that it reads album artist separately from artist, displays disc and track numbers, and retains your optional game field if you rely on it. If a field disappears after conversion, keep the standard release fields intact and treat the custom field as optional rather than replacing a supported field with it.
Troubleshoot common failures
The album is grouped under the wrong artist
Inspect album artist first. If it contains the game title or a guessed composer instead of the release credit, restore the credited album artist. Leave track artist values separate where a track has a different credit.
The correct songs received data from another edition
Compare date, country, label, identifiers, disc count, and bonus tracks. Undo the batch from your backup or retag the files against the intended release. Do not keep incorrect edition data merely because the track titles are similar.
Tracks play in the wrong order
Check that track number and disc number are populated and numeric, and that every file in the album uses the same album and album-artist values. If the player ignores disc metadata, use disc-specific folders while retaining the embedded fields.
One track was matched to the wrong song
Use the original-versus-proposed comparison, then manually drag the file to the correct track. Verify title, artist, duration or recording identity where available, and track position before saving the correction.
The game does not appear in searches
Do not alter album artist or album to force a game search. Add a game-title or franchise field supported by your player, or create a smart playlist based on that field. If your player cannot read custom tags, use a consistent folder layer and playlist naming instead.

A custom field vanishes after conversion
That behavior can result from format-specific tag mapping or a converter that copies only common fields. Recheck the converted file, retain standard fields for album behavior, and treat the custom game field as a convenience that may require reapplication.
Maintain the library after the first pass
Process new soundtracks with the same release-first routine. Create the album folder, identify the exact edition, verify credits and sequence, then save tags before moving or renaming files.
- Keep one consistent spelling for your optional game and franchise fields.
- Do not merge a reissue into an original release just to reduce folder count.
- Preserve disc and track values when adding bonus material; if the bonus tracks are a separate release, give them their own album metadata.
- Review automated matches whenever the source files have sparse tags or multiple releases share a title.
- After major edits, open several albums in your regular player and confirm grouping, credits, artwork, and order.
- Refresh backups after the corrected library has been tested.
A complete example
Imagine a two-disc soundtrack with a separate remastered edition and one guest vocalist. Create a directory such as Music/Soundtracks/Example Game/Example Game - Original Soundtrack (2012)/. Store files with names like 1-01 - Main Theme.flac and 2-03 - Vocal Finale.flac. Set the album to the release title, album artist to the credited release act, artist to the credited performer for each track, disc and track numbers to their original positions, and release date to the date of that edition. Put “Example Game” in a custom game-title field if supported. Keep the remastered edition in a different album and directory, even if most track titles match.
This arrangement lets a player group the original release correctly, find the guest vocalist through the track artist field, play both discs in order, and filter the library by game without rewriting the release’s credits.
