How to Organize PS5 Games, Media, and Storage

The most reliable way to organize a PS5 is to separate three jobs: keep actively played games on console or compatible M.2 storage, park inactive games on USB extended storage, and manage screenshots and clips in Media Gallery. Start at Settings > Storage to see what is consuming space, then use the Game Library and Media Gallery to move, delete, sort, and copy content.

Start with a storage audit

Open Settings > Storage before deleting or buying anything. The PS5 breaks usage into games and applications, media, and saved data, so you can identify the actual source of the problem instead of guessing. The management screen also provides ways to move or delete data.

What to check first

  • Games and applications: Look for titles you have finished, games installed for a single event, and large downloads you are not currently playing.
  • Media: Screenshots and video clips can accumulate unnoticed, especially if you capture frequently.
  • Saved data: Treat saves separately from games. Deleting an installed game is different from deleting its saved data, and you should remove saves only when you are certain they are no longer needed.

Write down which category is largest and deal with that category first. If games dominate, moving or deleting installations will make the biggest difference. If media dominates, use Media Gallery to export or remove captures. If saved data is the concern, review local and, where supported by the relevant PlayStation service, cloud saved data separately.

Use the right place for each kind of content

PS5 storage options are not interchangeable. The important distinction is whether a location can launch a game or merely hold its installation files.

Location Best use What you can launch or view Important checks
Console storage Games and data you use regularly Installed games and applications Check remaining capacity in Settings > Storage.
USB extended storage Keeping games outside console storage when they are not in rotation PS4 games can be played directly; PS5 games must be copied back to console or compatible M.2 storage first Use SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later, 250 GB to 8 TB; not every drive is guaranteed to work, and Sony says not to use a USB hub.
Compatible M.2 SSD Expanding capacity while retaining playability from the added storage PS5 and PS4 games, plus media applications, can be stored and launched from the M.2 location Follow Sony’s current M.2 compatibility and installation requirements before purchase or installation.
USB drive for captures Copying screenshots and clips out of Media Gallery Supported images and videos can be viewed from USB The official guidance describes capture copying, not a particular drive model or performance rating.
Cloud storage Saved data where the relevant PlayStation service supports it Saved data, not installed game files or captures Do not confuse cloud saves with game storage or Media Gallery content.

Move games from the Game Library

The Game Library is the practical control point for deciding which installations stay immediately playable and which are archived. Use it after your storage audit, not before, so every move has a purpose.

Keep active games immediately playable

Leave games you play every week on console storage or move them to a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony states that M.2 storage can store and launch both PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media applications. That makes it the appropriate expansion path when you want a larger library that remains playable without copying titles back and forth.

Park inactive PS5 games on USB

USB extended storage is useful for retaining a PS5 installation without using the console’s internal capacity. It is not a launch location for PS5 software: when you want to play one of those titles, copy it back to console storage or compatible M.2 storage first. The copy step is the trade-off for using a less expensive or already-owned USB drive as an archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Play PS4 games directly from USB

PS4 games are treated differently. Sony’s support guidance allows PS4 games to run directly from USB extended storage, so a USB drive can serve as both an archive and a play location for those titles. Keep PS5 and PS4 installations clearly identified in your own system: the same drive may launch one generation directly while requiring a copy for the other.

Delete an installation when you can re-download it

If a game is not worth keeping locally and you have no reason to preserve its installation files, delete the game or application from the storage-management controls. Sony says deleted game and application purchases can be downloaded again from the Game Library. This lets you reclaim space without losing your purchase entitlement. Before deleting, verify that any saves or captures you care about are still present; deleting the game is not a substitute for managing those separate data categories.

Choose and prepare USB extended storage safely

Check the requirements before buying

Sony’s USB extended-storage support page specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB through 8 TB. These are compatibility requirements stated by Sony, not a guarantee that every drive in that range will work. Sony also warns that not all USB devices are guaranteed to function and advises against connecting the drive through a USB hub.

  • Confirm the drive meets the 5 Gbps-or-faster SuperSpeed USB requirement.
  • Choose a capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB.
  • Connect the drive directly to the PS5 rather than through a hub.
  • Check Sony’s current support guidance for the specific connection and compatibility details that apply to your console.

Back up the drive before formatting

Formatting a USB device as extended storage erases the data already on it. Copy any documents, photos, or other files you need to another location before starting the format. Treat the format as a destructive operation even if the drive is new to the PS5 but has been used elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the PS5’s format process

  1. Connect the compatible USB drive directly to the PS5.
  2. Open the console’s storage controls and choose the option to format or configure the drive as extended storage.
  3. Read the warning confirming that existing data will be erased.
  4. Proceed only after verifying that the drive contains no files you need.
  5. After formatting, use the Game Library and storage-management controls to move eligible games to the drive.

The exact on-screen wording can change with system software, so follow the labels shown by your console rather than relying on an older screenshot or guide.

Disconnect it safely

Do not simply pull the cable while the PS5 is reading or writing game data. Use the console’s safe-removal instruction for extended storage, wait for the system to confirm that it can be disconnected, and then unplug the drive. Safe removal prevents an avoidable interruption while files are being transferred.

Use an M.2 SSD when games must stay playable

An M.2 SSD addresses a different problem from USB extended storage. It expands the pool from which games can be launched, rather than acting only as a parking area. Sony’s guidance says compatible M.2 storage can hold and launch PS5 and PS4 games and media applications.

Verify compatibility first

M.2 support depends on Sony’s compatibility and installation requirements. Check the current Sony instructions immediately before purchase and again before installation; do not assume that any physically fitting M.2 drive is supported. The guidance in this article does not establish a particular model, speed rating, heat solution, or installation method, so those details must come from Sony’s current requirements for your console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether the convenience is worth it

  • Choose M.2 expansion if you want a large PS5 library to remain launchable without copying titles back from USB.
  • Choose USB extended storage if you mainly need inexpensive capacity for games you play infrequently and accept the copy-back step for PS5 titles.
  • Use both when your library has two tiers: frequently played games on console or M.2, and an archive of inactive games on USB.

Organize screenshots and clips in Media Gallery

Sony describes Media Gallery as “The Media Gallery app is your place to view and manage all your screenshots and video clips.” Use it as the capture equivalent of the Game Library: first narrow the view, then decide what deserves to stay on the console.

Sort and filter before deleting

In Media Gallery, use the available sort and filter controls to reduce a large collection to a manageable set. Sorting helps you find recent or older captures; filtering helps isolate the kind of item you are looking for. Review the narrowed results before removing anything so that an important clip is not lost among duplicates.

Mark important captures as favorites

Mark screenshots and clips you expect to revisit as favorites. Favorites provide a quick retrieval path without requiring you to remember when the capture was made or scroll through every item. Use this for highlights, reference images, and clips you intend to share or export.

Browse by game

Media Gallery organizes captures into albums by game. Open the album for a specific title when you want to clean up one game’s screenshots without touching captures from another. This is especially useful after finishing a game: you can keep a small set of memorable images, copy the rest to USB if desired, and remove redundant captures from the console.

WD_BLACK 1TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD Officially Licensed Storage Expansion for PS5 Consoles, up to 7,300MB/s, with heatsink - WDBBYV0010BNC-WRSN
  • Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
  • With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Copy selected captures to USB

  1. Connect a USB drive that the PS5 can access for media transfer.
  2. Open Media Gallery and select the screenshots or video clips you want to preserve.
  3. Choose the command to copy the selected captures to the connected USB storage device.
  4. Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting the drive.
  5. Verify the files on the USB drive before deleting the originals from Media Gallery.

The official guidance confirms copying selected captures to USB. It does not specify a particular drive model or performance requirement for this use, so select a drive appropriate to the amount of media you need to transfer and confirm that your files are present before cleanup.

A practical organization workflow

Use this sequence whenever the PS5 reports low space or your library becomes difficult to navigate.

  1. Audit: Open Settings > Storage and identify whether games, media, or saved data is responsible for the pressure.
  2. Classify games: In the Game Library, separate active games from titles you want to retain but are not currently playing.
  3. Place active games: Keep them on console storage or move them to compatible M.2 storage if you want them launchable from expanded capacity.
  4. Archive inactive games: Move them to USB extended storage. Remember that PS5 games must be copied back before play, while PS4 games can run directly from the USB drive.
  5. Clean captures: Open Media Gallery, filter or sort the collection, mark favorites, and work through game-based albums.
  6. Export before removal: Copy selected screenshots and clips to USB, then confirm the copies before deleting local versions.
  7. Handle formatting carefully: Back up any files on a USB drive before formatting it as extended storage, and use the PS5’s safe-removal process when disconnecting it.
  8. Recheck periodically: Return to Settings > Storage after a cleanup to confirm that the expected space was recovered.

Decide what to buy, if anything

Do not purchase storage until the audit shows what kind of capacity you need. A drive that solves the wrong problem can leave you copying games unnecessarily or paying for capacity you will not use.

Your priority Most suitable option Reason
Keep infrequently played PS5 games without occupying console space Compatible USB extended storage It holds the installations, but PS5 games must be copied back to console or M.2 storage before launching.
Keep a large PS5 and PS4 library playable from expanded storage Compatible M.2 SSD Sony says M.2 storage can store and launch both generations of games.
Play older PS4 games while preserving console capacity USB extended storage PS4 games can be played directly from the USB location.
Preserve screenshots and clips outside the console USB drive for captures Media Gallery can copy selected captures to a connected USB device.
Recover space without buying hardware Delete unneeded games, applications, or captures Purchased games and applications can be downloaded again from the Game Library, while captures should be exported first if you want to keep them.

Troubleshooting common organization problems

A PS5 game on USB will not start

This is expected behavior for USB extended storage. Copy the game to console storage or compatible M.2 storage, then launch it from there. USB remains useful as the holding location; it is not the launch location for PS5 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PS5 does not accept a USB drive as extended storage

Check the basics in order: the drive should meet the SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-later requirement, have capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, and be connected directly rather than through a hub. Not every drive is guaranteed to work. If the drive contains files you need, back them up before attempting any format operation because formatting erases existing data.

A capture seems to have disappeared

Use Media Gallery’s sort and filter controls, then check the album for the relevant game. If you copied the item to USB, verify the copy on the drive before deleting local content. Favorites can make important captures easier to find during future cleanups.

Deleting a game did not free the expected amount of space

Return to Settings > Storage and check each category. A game deletion changes game-and-application usage, but media and saved data are tracked separately. You may need to remove or export captures or review other large installations before the total changes as expected.

You are unsure whether to delete saved data

Pause and verify first. The storage screen distinguishes saved data from games and media. Keep local saves unless you are certain they are no longer needed and understand whether a supported cloud-storage option contains the version you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the system organized over time

  • Review Settings > Storage whenever free space becomes tight, rather than waiting until a new game cannot install.
  • Use a simple rule for games: active on console or M.2, inactive on USB, and disposable only after you confirm you can download them again.
  • After a major gaming session, open Media Gallery and remove duplicate captures while the context is still fresh.
  • Mark favorites before a cleanup so important clips are not mixed with temporary screenshots.
  • Copy captures to USB when you need a separate copy, and verify the files before deleting the originals.
  • Safely remove extended-storage drives and never format a drive until its existing files are backed up.

This arrangement keeps the console’s immediately playable space focused on current games, turns USB into a deliberate archive instead of a dumping ground, and gives screenshots and clips a repeatable home in Media Gallery.
