The Favorites manager is where you create folders, move saved pages, rename or delete entries, reorder links, and sort the Favorites bar alphabetically. To organize a collection, open Settings and more > Favorites > More options > Open favorites page, build a small folder hierarchy, place each favorite in the correct folder, and use Sort by name when an A–Z order is more useful than a hand-curated order. Turn on Favorites sync under your Edge profile if the same structure should appear on other signed-in devices.
What Edge calls bookmarks
In Microsoft Edge, a saved website is called a Favorite. “Bookmarks” and “Favorites” mean the same thing for this purpose, but Edge’s menus use the latter term. Favorites may be displayed on the Favorites bar, inside folders, or in the full Favorites manager.

The manager is the central control point for a collection. Microsoft documents it as the place to organize saved websites, bookmarks, and webpages, including creating folders, sorting and reordering items, editing names or addresses, and deleting entries. Organizing there is safer than trying to maintain a long, mixed list from the bar alone because you can see the folder structure and the items inside it together.

Choose a structure before moving anything
A useful structure reflects how you use links, not how websites happen to label themselves. Start with a few broad folders that will remain meaningful for months. Examples include Work, Finance, Travel, and Reference. A folder for every individual site quickly becomes as difficult to scan as an unorganized list.

Keep the top level small
Put only your most important categories at the top level. If a category has several distinct groups, create subfolders beneath it. For example, Work might contain Projects, Documentation, and Tools. A shallow structure makes frequent links easy to reach; a deeper structure is useful only when the extra distinction helps you find an item.
Separate frequent links from archives
Reserve the Favorites bar and its first-level folders for sites you open regularly. Put infrequently used material in a folder such as Reference or Archive. This avoids forcing every saved page into the same visual row and leaves the bar useful for daily work.
Decide how names should work
Page titles are often long, duplicated, or written for search engines rather than for your own recognition. Use short names that identify the destination or task. “Payroll portal” is easier to scan than a full marketing title, while “Project Atlas — issue tracker” distinguishes a work link from other tracking systems. Consistent naming also makes Sort by name produce a more useful result.

Use this desktop path to reach the full manager:
- Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more, the three-dot menu in the browser toolbar.
- Choose Favorites.
- In the Favorites window, select More options.
- Choose Open favorites page.
The Favorites page is where you can work on folders and individual entries. Menu wording or icon placement can change with an Edge update, your operating-system language, or a policy applied to a managed device. If a label is not in the same position, look for the Favorites window’s More options menu and the command that opens the full page.
Create and maintain folders
Use the folder controls on the Favorites page to build the hierarchy you planned. Create a folder at the appropriate level, give it a concise name, and then add or move favorites into it. The same controls support renaming and deleting folders.
Create a top-level folder
- Open the Favorites page.
- Use its folder control to create a new folder.
- Enter a category name such as Work, Travel, or Reference.
- Save the folder, then repeat only for categories you will actually maintain.
Create a subfolder
- Select the parent folder in the Favorites page.
- Use the folder creation control while that parent is selected.
- Name the subfolder according to the narrower task or topic.
- Open the parent to confirm that the new folder is nested at the intended level.
Confirming the parent matters when several folders have similar names. A misplaced folder can make later moves confusing, especially after synchronization to another device.

Rename or delete a folder
Select the folder in the Favorites manager and use its available edit or delete action. Renaming preserves the items inside it while making the category clearer. Delete a folder only after checking its contents; a folder removal can affect every favorite stored beneath it. If a category is no longer useful, first move any links worth keeping into another folder, then remove the empty or obsolete folder.
Save a new bookmark directly into a folder
When you are viewing a page you want to keep, assign its destination while saving rather than saving to a temporary location and cleaning it up later.
- Select Add this page to favorites in Edge.
- Review the proposed title and replace it with a concise name if necessary.
- Open the folder or destination selector in the save dialog.
- Choose the correct folder, including a subfolder if one is appropriate.
- Select Done.
Check the destination before closing the dialog. Saving two pages with similar titles into different folders can make duplicates look intentional even when one is unnecessary. A deliberate name and destination at save time reduces that ambiguity.
Move existing favorites into folders
For items already in your collection, use the Favorites manager to place each one in the appropriate folder. Work in batches by category rather than dragging randomly through the entire list. Open a folder, identify the links that belong there, and move them one at a time or by the manager’s available selection controls.
After a move, verify the destination folder before deleting any duplicate. If the same address appears in two places, compare the names and destinations first. Keep the copy whose name, folder, and position are most useful, then remove the redundant entry through the manager’s delete action.

A practical first pass
- Open the Favorites page and note the existing top-level items.
- Create the small set of folders you decided on.
- Move obvious matches first, such as all travel reservations into Travel.
- Leave uncertain items in a temporary, clearly named folder rather than forcing a premature decision.
- Review that temporary folder later and either classify each link or delete it if it is no longer useful.
The manager also supports reordering. Use that capability after the main folder placement is complete, so you are not repeatedly rearranging items while the structure is still changing.

Sort Edge Favorites alphabetically
Microsoft’s documented alphabetical command is Sort by name on the Favorites bar page. To use it:
- Open the Favorites page through Settings and more > Favorites > More options > Open favorites page.
- Right-click anywhere on the Favorites bar page.
- Select Sort by name.
This is the supported path for an A–Z arrangement. It is useful when you remember a site’s name but not its category, or when a folder has grown too large for a hand-maintained order.
When alphabetical order is the wrong choice
A–Z order treats every link as equally important. A hand-curated order is better when you need a small number of high-frequency links at the top, such as a daily work portal, calendar, or frequently used reference page. In that case, keep those links in a deliberate order and use folders to separate the rest.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft’s documentation confirms that saved sites can be reordered, but it does not document additional automatic sort keys. Do not assume Edge can automatically sort by visit frequency, date added, domain, or URL unless your installed version explicitly offers such a command.
Rename, edit, and remove stale links
Regular cleanup keeps folders useful. In the Favorites manager:
- Rename entries whose titles are vague, duplicated, or unnecessarily long.
- Edit a favorite when its page title or URL has changed.
- Delete dead links, obsolete references, and confirmed duplicates.
- Reorder entries when a manual priority order is more useful than alphabetical order.
Use names that answer the question “What will I get when I open this?” A task-based label is often more durable than a company name or a temporary campaign title. If a URL changes, edit the existing favorite rather than creating another copy unless both destinations are genuinely different.

A safe cleanup sequence
- Open a questionable favorite and confirm whether it still reaches the intended page.
- If the destination changed, edit the existing favorite and retain its folder position.
- If two entries lead to the same destination, keep the clearer name and more useful folder placement.
- Delete only after confirming that no separate account, region, or task requires the other entry.
- Reorder the remaining links once the cleanup is finished.
Choose an organization method
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folder hierarchy | Flat top level | Nested folders | Use a flat list for a small collection; nest only when subtopics make scanning easier. |
| Ordering | Manual priority | Sort by name | Manual order suits daily links; A–Z suits large lists searched by title. |
| Maintenance | Keep original page titles | Use concise task-based names | Short, consistent names are easier to scan and maintain. |
| Portability | Local organization | Favorites sync enabled | Use sync when the same profile and collection are needed on other signed-in devices. |
These choices are independent. You can use nested folders with manual priority, or flat folders with alphabetical sorting. Select the combination that matches how you retrieve links rather than trying to make every folder behave identically.
Sync folders and favorites across devices
Edge can make Favorites available on other signed-in devices through profile synchronization. Sync is a profile setting, so verify that you are using the same Edge profile on each device.
- Sign in to your Edge profile.
- Open Settings > Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to configure.
- Open Sync.
- Turn on the Favorites data toggle.
After synchronization is enabled, the folders and saved sites associated with that profile can be available on the user’s other synced devices. Allow for the possibility that menus, timing, or available controls differ on a managed computer. If a device shows a different collection, first check the signed-in profile and whether Favorites is enabled in that profile’s Sync settings.
What sync does not solve
Sync does not decide your folder names, remove duplicates, or choose between alphabetical and manual ordering. Those are organization decisions you make in the Favorites manager. It also does not make every mobile command identical to the desktop interface. Treat the desktop Favorites page as the place to establish the structure, then use other devices to access it.
Desktop and mobile differences
The documented workflow applies to current Edge desktop experiences, including Windows 10 and Edge for Mac in Microsoft’s organization and add-favorite guidance. Mobile Edge has separate Favorites views. Do not assume that a phone or tablet exposes the desktop Favorites-bar context menu, the same folder controls, or the Sort by name command.
Recommended Free Tools
If you need to perform a large reorganization or alphabetical sort, use the desktop Favorites page. On mobile, confirm that you are signed in to the profile whose Favorites sync is enabled, then use the mobile Favorites view for access and small edits that the installed app provides.

Troubleshoot common organization problems
The Favorites page is not visible
Start again from Settings and more > Favorites, then open More options > Open favorites page. If labels differ, check for an Edge update, a different display language, or a managed-device policy that changes available commands.
A favorite was saved in the wrong place
Open the Favorites manager, locate the item, and move it to the intended folder. When saving a new page, use the destination selector in the Add this page to favorites dialog and confirm the folder before selecting Done.
Alphabetical sorting did not happen
Make sure you right-clicked on the Favorites bar page in the Favorites manager and selected Sort by name. The documented command is tied to that page; it is not described as a global sort for every view or every nested folder.
A folder or favorite is missing on another device
Check that both devices use the same signed-in Edge profile. On the device where the collection should appear, open Settings > Profiles > Sync and confirm that the Favorites toggle is on. Mobile and desktop views may expose different controls even when they use the same synchronized profile.
Too many duplicates appeared
Do not delete entries solely because their titles look alike. Open each candidate, compare its destination and purpose, keep the version with the clearest name and correct folder, and then delete confirmed duplicates from the manager.
A maintenance routine that keeps the system usable
Organization is easier when small corrections happen at the time you save a page. Use a concise title, select the destination folder, and avoid saving a second copy when an existing favorite already represents the same task.
- Keep only a few stable folders at the top level.
- Use subfolders for genuine subtopics, not for every individual site.
- Rename unclear entries so their purpose is obvious.
- Remove dead and confirmed duplicate links from the Favorites manager.
- Use manual order for high-frequency links and Sort by name for lists best scanned alphabetically.
- Review the profile’s Favorites sync setting when moving to a new signed-in device.
With that approach, Edge’s Favorites manager becomes the source of truth: folders express the broad structure, names identify each destination, ordering reflects how you retrieve links, and synchronization carries the same organization to the other devices using the profile.
