Google Photos can automatically cluster pictures of the same person or pet, but you must enable Face Groups before you can name, search, merge, or correct those clusters. Open the People or People & pets area, assign names or nicknames, and review the results because Google describes face-group suggestions as imperfect. Availability depends on your region, domain, account type, and app version.
This guide covers the complete workflow: checking eligibility, turning the setting on, finding groups, labeling them, merging duplicates, correcting individual photos, marking your own group as Me, and understanding what happens to face data when you disable the feature or stop using Google Photos.

What Face Groups does in Google Photos
Face Groups is Google Photos’ automated filing system for people and pets. When it is enabled, Photos detects faces, creates face models that estimate visual similarity, and groups pictures likely to show the same individual. A group can then receive a name or nickname, making it searchable.
The grouping is not a verified identity record. Google also says its system can use context beyond a clearly visible face, such as pictures taken close together in time or similar clothing. That can help with side profiles, blurred images, or photos in which a face is partly hidden, but it can also put different people together or split one person into several groups. Treat every group as a useful suggestion that needs occasional review.

What you need before starting
You need a Google Photos library, access to the Google account that owns it, and a supported account, domain, and region. Face Groups is a setting attached to the account, so changing accounts in the same browser or app can make the feature appear to vanish. A current version of the app or browser is sensible because Google changes menu names and locations.
No scanner, external drive, printed album, or other physical product is required to use face grouping. The task is entirely inside Google Photos. If you have a large library, plan for processing time after enabling the setting; groups may not be visible immediately.
Check availability before troubleshooting
People or People & pets may be absent for several different reasons. Google states that Face Groups is not available in every geographic region, domain, or account type. Even where it is supported, the library may not yet contain any generated groups.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm that Face Groups is turned on.
- Check that you are using the intended Google account, especially if you have personal, work, school, or family accounts.
- Allow time for Photos to process a large library after enabling the feature.
- Look for People on the website or People & pets under Collections in the Android app.
If the setting is enabled but no groups appear, the combination of account eligibility and processing status is more likely than a missing menu. Menu names can change with the app version and platform. A missing People area is therefore not proof that your photos cannot be organized; first check the setting, account, region, and whether processing has begun.
Turn on Face Groups
On a computer
- Go to
photos.google.com/settingswhile signed in to the account that owns the library. - Expand Group similar faces.
- Turn on Face Groups.
- Return to Google Photos and open People when groups have been generated.
The exact wording can vary as Google updates the web interface, but the relevant control is the Face Groups setting inside Group similar faces. If you use more than one Google account, verify the avatar or account identifier before changing the switch.
On Android
- Open Google Photos and tap your profile or account menu.
- Open Photos settings.
- Go to Privacy. In some current versions, the control is surfaced under Preferences and Group similar faces.
- Turn on Face Groups, then return to Collections and open People & pets after processing begins.
Because Google has moved this control between settings sections, search the settings screen for “Group similar faces” if the first path does not match your version. If the option is missing altogether, verify region, domain, and account eligibility before assuming the app is broken.
Find a person or pet group
Website
Open Google Photos in a browser and choose People. Select a face group to see the pictures currently assigned to it. Groups may appear without names until you label them. Unnamed groups are still usable for review; the name is what makes a group convenient to retrieve with a text search.
Recommended Free Tools
Android app
Open Collections, then People & pets. Tap a group to browse its photos. The iOS and web layouts can use different navigation labels, so look for the People area rather than relying on an identical menu sequence.
For a first pass through a large library, start with the groups containing the clearest portraits. Labeling obvious groups first gives you a reliable base for spotting duplicates and incorrect assignments later.

Name a group so it becomes searchable
- Open People on the website or People & pets under Collections on Android.
- Select the group you want to identify.
- Choose Add a name.
- Enter a name or nickname and save it.
After labeling, search Google Photos for that name to retrieve pictures assigned to the group. Google describes the label as private to the account holder, even when the underlying photos are shared with other people. Sharing a photo therefore does not expose the private face-group name as a public annotation.
Use a consistent naming style for relatives, friends, and pets. A nickname is acceptable, but avoid creating slightly different spellings for the same person; separate spellings make later merging harder. If you are unsure which of two unnamed groups is the same person, leave both unnamed until you can inspect them rather than assigning a speculative label.
Merge duplicate groups carefully
A person may have two groups because Photos processed different parts of the library at different times or because the system was uncertain about similarity. Google can suggest a merge, and labeling two groups with the same name can also produce a matching suggestion.
- Open the first group and add the person’s name.
- Open the second group and enter the same name.
- When Google presents a matching or merge suggestion, inspect both groups before accepting it.
- Confirm only when every group represents the same person or pet.
Google Photos Help warns that “Face group suggestions aren’t perfect.” A completed merge cannot be undone, so do not confirm a suggestion simply because the thumbnails look broadly similar. Check distinctive faces, age differences, siblings, and photos with hats or sunglasses before committing.
Pay particular attention to event-heavy libraries. People photographed at the same party may share backgrounds, lighting, clothing, and capture times, all of which can reinforce an incorrect match. Open enough images from each group to establish that the same individual appears throughout, not just in the first few thumbnails.
Fix a photo placed in the wrong face group
Rename or remove a group label
Open the group, use its More menu, and edit or remove the name. Removing the name changes the label; it does not necessarily remove every photo from the underlying face grouping. If a group contains several people, correct the individual assignments as well as the group name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCorrect one photo’s assignment
- Open the individual photo.
- Open the photo’s information or details panel.
- Find the People & pets controls.
- Where those controls are offered, remove the incorrect group, add the appropriate group, or select a different face group.
- Save the change and revisit the group to confirm the result.
The controls available for an individual image vary by country, platform, and app version. Do not assume that every account can manually create a new group for a face Photos did not detect. If a suggested assignment is wrong, use Google Photos’ feedback option when it is shown.
When a person is missing from a photo
A face may be too small, obscured, turned away, blurred, or absent from the frame. Contextual signals can sometimes place such an image in a group, but there is no guarantee. Try the details panel on another clear image of the same person, and review the group after Photos has processed more of the library.
Do not interpret a missing face assignment as proof that the person is not in the image. Detection and grouping are separate steps, and either can fail. Conversely, a grouped image is not proof of identity because contextual signals can influence membership.

Mark your own group as “Me”
Google Photos can designate the account holder’s group as Me. In Face Groups settings, confirm your own face group as Me. Google says this supports personalized search and creations. You can change or remove the Me label later, so selecting it is not a permanent identity setting.
Choose the group carefully if several self-portraits or different ages appear. The Me label is an account preference, not a public tag, and changing it does not rename other people’s groups.
Understand what the system is—and is not—doing
Detection
Photos first looks for faces in images. Detection can fail when a face is obscured, very small, heavily blurred, or outside the frame.
Face modeling
With Face Groups enabled, Google creates models that estimate whether faces look alike and whether they belong to the same individual. The model is an automated similarity estimate, not a human-confirmed identity.
Contextual grouping
Google says grouping can also consider photos taken near one another in time and similar clothing. These signals may improve coverage when the face itself is unclear, but they can create false matches—for example, two people photographed at the same event in similar outfits.

Human review remains necessary
Review newly created groups, proposed merges, and unusual assignments. Pay special attention to siblings, twins, children whose appearance changes quickly, and pets with similar markings. Correcting mistakes early prevents an inaccurate label from spreading through searches and creations.
Privacy, deletion, and retention consequences
Labels are private to your account
Google describes names and nicknames assigned to face groups as private to the account holder, even if a labeled photo is shared. The recipient can see the shared image, but the private face-group label is not presented as a public tag.
Turning Face Groups off deletes organization data
Disabling Face Groups is not merely a temporary hide switch. Google’s retention policy says that turning it off deletes all account face groups, the face models used to create those groups, and user-created face labels. If you enable the feature again later, you should expect to rebuild names and review newly generated groups.
Before switching it off to troubleshoot, record that it is a destructive reset of the face-organization layer. Your underlying photos are separate from the groups, but the names, models, and group structure are not retained according to the policy.

Deleting a photo removes models derived from that photo
Google says that deleting an individual photo deletes the models derived specifically from that photo. This does not mean every model for the person disappears; it applies to data derived from the deleted image.
Long-term inactivity
Google’s retention policy states that Face Groups content is deleted after more than two years without using Google Photos. If face labels are important to your archive, keep the account active rather than treating the feature as a permanent, independent backup of your organization work.

The menu is missing
- Check the Face Groups setting at
photos.google.com/settingson the web or in the app’s privacy/preferences settings. - Confirm the account, region, domain, and account type support the feature.
- Check whether Photos has created any groups yet; an empty library or newly enabled setting may not show useful groups immediately.
- On Android, look under Collections for People & pets; on the website, look for People.
The setting is on but groups are empty
- Keep the app updated and connected while Photos processes the library.
- Open several recent photos and check again later.
- Verify that you did not enable the setting in one Google account while viewing photos from another.
- Allow additional processing time for a large or recently imported library.
Too many duplicate groups
- Label only groups you have inspected.
- Use the same spelling for the same person.
- Accept a merge only after checking both groups; completed merges cannot be undone.
- Leave uncertain groups separate until you have enough images to compare them.
The wrong person appears in search
- Open the photo’s details panel and use People & pets controls to remove or change the assignment when available.
- Review the group for contextual false matches caused by event timing or similar clothing.
- Send feedback through Google Photos when an incorrect suggestion is presented.
- Check whether the problem is limited to one image or affects the whole group before renaming anything.
A control described online is not visible
Google’s controls can differ by country, platform, account type, and app version. Use the current details panel and More menu available to your account rather than assuming every tutorial applies identically. If a manual face-group creation option is not present, you cannot rely on it as a required step.
A practical maintenance routine for a large library
- Enable Face Groups and wait for initial processing.
- Open People or People & pets and label the groups you recognize first.
- Search each new name to spot obvious misfiles.
- Inspect merge suggestions before accepting them.
- Correct individual photos through their details panels where the controls are available.
- Recheck groups after importing a large batch of images, especially event photos with multiple people.
- Use the Me label only after confirming the correct self group.
- Before disabling Face Groups, decide whether losing all face models, groups, and labels is acceptable.
This routine keeps face grouping useful without treating automated clusters as definitive identity records. The feature is most effective when its suggestions are combined with deliberate naming and periodic correction.

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I see People or People & pets?
Face Groups may be unavailable for your region, domain, or account type, or the setting may be off. If it is enabled, Photos may still be processing the library or may not have created groups yet. Check the account and setting first.
Where do I turn on face recognition in Google Photos?
On a computer, open photos.google.com/settings, expand Group similar faces, and turn on Face Groups. On Android, use the profile menu, Photos settings, and Privacy; some versions place the control under Preferences and Group similar faces.
How do I name a person in Google Photos?
Open People on the website or People & pets under Collections on Android, choose a group, select Add a name, and enter a name or nickname. That label can then be used in searches.
Are face-group names visible when I share a photo?
Google describes the name or nickname as private to your account, even when the photo itself is shared. Sharing the image does not turn the face-group label into a public annotation.
Can I undo a merge?
No. Google says a completed merge cannot be undone. Inspect both groups carefully, especially when people resemble one another, before confirming.

Can I remove one wrong photo from a group?
Open the photo, view its information or details, and use People & pets controls to remove or change the assignment when those controls are available. Availability varies by country, platform, and app version.
What happens if I turn Face Groups off?
Google’s retention policy says turning it off deletes account face groups, the face models used to create them, and user-created face labels. Turning it on again should therefore be treated as a rebuild rather than a simple pause.
How accurate are Google Photos face groups?
They are automated similarity groups, not verified identities. Google Photos Help says, “Face group suggestions aren’t perfect.” Review groups and merge proposals, because timing, clothing, image quality, and changing appearance can all affect results.
