Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a predictable cartoon stream, store episodes in stable, clearly named folders; add them to an OBS VLC Video source in the order you want; turn on Loop Playlist and leave Shuffle Playlist off. That organizes playback, but it does not make a stream uninterrupted by itself: the media must remain accessible, OBS and the network must keep running, and YouTube stream health needs monitoring.
Plan a library that is easy to maintain
OBS can play a list of media files in the order listed, but it does not impose a folder or filename convention. Use a structure that makes episodes easy to identify and keeps alphabetical sorting aligned with playback order:

Season 01/
Series Name - S01E01 - Episode Title.mp4
Series Name - S01E02 - Episode Title.mp4
Use consistent season and episode numbering, including leading zeroes, so episode 2 does not sort after episode 10. Put specials and interstitials in clearly labeled folders or give them an unmistakable filename. Once the playlist is built, avoid moving or renaming files: changing their paths can leave the source unable to find them. This is a practical workflow, not a naming rule from OBS or YouTube.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck files before building the playlist
- Open representative files and check that video, audio, and any intended subtitles behave as expected.
- Include only material intended for this stream, and establish that you have the rights needed to rebroadcast it. A file playing successfully does not establish permission to stream it.
- OBS documents local support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; match its architecture to OBS, such as 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. VLC provides extended media support beyond OBS’s built-in media source documentation.
See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation for supported sources and source options.

Build an ordered, looping OBS playlist
- Install VLC if needed. Close OBS, install the VLC version matching your OBS architecture, then reopen OBS. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check that VLC is installed and the architectures match.
- Add the source. In the scene that will carry the stream, select Sources → + → VLC Video and create a source.
- Add files in playback order. Use the playlist controls to add the episode files in the intended sequence. Review the list rather than assuming folder order has been imported correctly.
- Set predictable playback. Turn Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off. Loop Playlist restarts the source after it runs out of files; shuffle is a separate control. If you want to repeat only one file, use an OBS Media Source and enable its Loop option instead.
- Check visibility behavior. If scenes may switch, inspect the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting. Depending on its configuration, a hidden source can stop, pause, or continue. Make sure the 24/7 playback source will not be hidden or stopped unintentionally.
- Preview the whole path. Play several files, including one near the end of the playlist, and verify the transition back to the first item. Check audio levels and the picture in OBS before going live.
OBS’s documented option describes Loop Playlist as restarting the source when it has run out of media files. It is a playback setting, not a guarantee that OBS, the computer, the network, or YouTube will remain connected.
Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder
YouTube treats the audience-facing event as a broadcast and the encoder’s audio/video input as a stream. Keeping that distinction in mind helps when setting up a persistent encoder or planning how broadcasts use an input; it does not protect a broadcast from computer, power, or network failure. See Google’s explanation of YouTube broadcasts and streams.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the broadcast and obtain the stream key for the encoder. Handle the key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or shared setup notes.
- Configure OBS for the event. Select YouTube as the service and enter or select the stream key using the controls in your OBS version. Confirm the chosen ingest protocol is supported by the encoder and matches the YouTube setup.
- Choose a protocol deliberately. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS. HLS is a different ingest method with additional segment and playlist requirements, described below; do not apply HLS-specific rules to a standard RTMP/RTMPS setup.
- Set output for your connection. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds for keyframe frequency. Pick resolution and bitrate based on the intended output and the sustained upload capacity available to the encoder. There is no single bitrate appropriate to every resolution, frame rate, and connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the relevant format recommendations.
- Run a representative test. Test content with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then check the YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and messages before relying on the setup.
Keep the stream available end to end
A looped playlist only solves what happens when its media list reaches the end. Continuity depends on every link in the chain: the files, the playback source, OBS, the computer, the internet connection, and YouTube ingest.
- Keep the media drive mounted and file paths unchanged. A disconnected drive or moved file can break playback.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping or restarting unexpectedly, and keep OBS open and connected for as long as the stream is meant to run.
- Use a reliable network connection with upload capacity appropriate for the chosen output. Monitor YouTube’s stream health while live and respond to warnings or messages.
- Test the complete setup before depending on it. A successful local loop does not demonstrate that the encoder or network can sustain a live connection.
YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it. Its guidance does not prescribe a particular computer, storage device, folder scheme, or guaranteed-uptime design.

When HLS ingest is actually in use
HLS is not just another label for a playlist of local cartoon files. It is an ingest protocol with specific segment and playlist requirements. YouTube’s setup guidance calls for TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST or PUT, and no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
The YouTube Live Streaming API’s HLS documentation also specifies increasing media sequence numbers, unique segment filenames across encoder restarts, and an updated playlist for each media segment. It describes a separate backup ingest URL for sending a redundant second copy. Redundancy adds encoder configuration and does not guarantee uninterrupted viewing. These details matter primarily when implementing HLS ingestion; a creator using a normal encoder preset may not manage segments and playlists directly. Read Google’s HLS ingestion guide if you are implementing that workflow. The underlying HLS standard identifies playlists through a .m3u8 or .m3u path extension or the appropriate content type and requires UTF-8 encoding; those are protocol details, not rules for naming local cartoon files. See RFC 8216.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is absent from OBS’s source menu | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC matching OBS (for example, both 64-bit), then reopen OBS. |
| A file is missing or playback stops on it | The file was moved or renamed, its drive is unavailable, or the media is not playing as expected. | Restore the original path, reconnect the drive, and open the file independently before rebuilding the playlist. |
| Episodes play in an unexpected order | The source list is in a different order than intended, filenames sort inconsistently, or shuffle is enabled. | Review the VLC Video list, turn Shuffle Playlist off for scheduled order, and use consistent episode numbering. |
| The playlist ends instead of starting over | Loop Playlist is off, or the wrong source type or loop control is being used. | For multiple files, enable Loop Playlist on VLC Video. For one file, use Media Source’s Loop option. |
| Playback pauses or stops after changing scenes | The source’s Visibility Behaviour may stop or pause it while hidden. | Inspect that setting and test scene changes in the intended 24/7 layout. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the live stream drops | The encoder connection, upload capacity, output settings, or ingest configuration may be unsuitable. | Review YouTube’s health messages, verify the connection and protocol, check the encoder’s CBR and keyframe settings, and test at the intended output before restarting. |
| HLS ingest is rejected or delayed | HLS segment, request, playlist, or sequence requirements may not be met; HLS also has higher latency than RTMP. | Check TS format, 1–4 second segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, the outstanding-segment limit, sequence numbers, and playlist updates against YouTube’s HLS documentation. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer, media drive, or internet connection to be part of the always-on setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
