How to Organize a Side-by-Side Refrigerator for Better Food Storage

The safest way to organize a side-by-side refrigerator is to create a clear map around the appliance’s actual compartments, verify temperatures with thermometers, keep perishable food out of the door, and isolate anything that could leak. Set the refrigerator to 40°F (4°C) or below and the freezer to 0°F (-18°C) or below, then use shelves, crispers, drawers, and bins according to their labels and the owner’s manual.

Start with temperature, not shelf height

A tidy refrigerator is useful only when food stays cold enough. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and FDA guidance sets the refrigerator limit at 40°F (4°C) and the freezer limit at 0°F (-18°C). The number shown on a control panel may be a setting rather than the actual air temperature, so place an appliance thermometer in the refrigerator and another in the freezer. Check them regularly, especially after changing a setting, loading a large amount of food, or noticing that food feels warmer than usual.

Do not assume one shelf is always the coldest in every side-by-side model. Airflow, vents, drawer design, ice makers, and control settings differ. USDA says food can be stored in any location in a properly operating refrigerator when the entire cabinet remains at or below 40°F. The layout below is therefore a practical starting map, not a universal temperature ranking.

Read the manual before assigning specialty compartments

Side-by-side refrigerators do not all use the same drawer controls or shelf arrangements. The manual takes precedence if it specifies a temperature range, humidity slider, maximum load, vent clearance, or a special purpose for a drawer. Some meat drawers have adjustable controls; some crispers have separate humidity settings; other models have fixed compartments. Keep those instructions with your organizing plan.

A practical side-by-side refrigerator map

Compartment Good uses Safety and organization notes
Interior shelves Covered leftovers, dairy, ready-to-eat foods, and frequently used items Use visible zones that fit the shelf spacing. Keep food covered and leave room for cold air to move.
Sealed crisper drawers Fresh vegetables and fruit Use the humidity control if present. Vegetables generally need higher humidity; fruit generally needs lower humidity. Follow the drawer labels and manual.
Meat or cheese drawer Meat, cheese, and other foods intended for the specialty compartment Use the temperature setting specified for the model. Seal raw products so juices cannot escape, even inside this drawer.
Door bins Items that are less temperature-sensitive, such as condiments and other products allowed by the manufacturer Door temperatures fluctuate more than cabinet temperatures. Keep perishable foods and eggs out of the door.
Freezer side Grouped frozen foods that can be seen and retrieved easily Maintain the freezer target of 0°F (-18°C) or below, preserve airflow, and follow the model’s loading instructions.

How to reset and organize the refrigerator

  1. Prepare a safe work area. Have a refrigerator thermometer, freezer thermometer, covered containers or sealed bags, and a way to wipe spills. Work in sections so refrigerated food is not left out unnecessarily.
  2. Measure before moving shelves. Put the thermometers in place and record the readings. If the refrigerator is above 40°F or the freezer is above 0°F, correct the setting and consult the manual before relying on the new arrangement.
  3. Inspect every package for containment. Keep refrigerated food in covered containers or sealed bags. Put raw meat, poultry, and seafood in a sealed container or wrap them securely so juices cannot reach other food.
  4. Assign broad zones. Choose a shelf or section for ready-to-eat foods, another for dairy or frequently used items, a crisper for produce, and the specialty drawer for foods it is designed to hold. The exact shelf order is a convenience decision when the whole refrigerator is verified at the safe temperature.
  5. Adjust shelves to the packages you actually use. If the model allows height changes, create enough clearance for the tallest containers without blocking vents. Keep similar items together so you can find them with the door open for less time.
  6. Load the crispers by humidity. Put vegetables in the higher-humidity setting and fruit in the lower-humidity setting when the drawer provides that control. If the drawer has a model-specific label, use it instead of a generic rule.
  7. Keep perishable foods off the door. Move eggs, milk, meat, seafood, and other temperature-sensitive foods to an interior shelf or the appropriate specialty drawer. Eggs should remain in their carton on an interior shelf.
  8. Use the door for less-sensitive items. Reserve the bins for foods that tolerate the greater temperature fluctuation there and that fit securely without falling when the door moves.
  9. Organize the freezer by category. Keep similar frozen foods together and visible. Avoid filling the compartment so tightly that cold air cannot circulate or packages block vents.
  10. Recheck the thermometers. After loading, allow the appliance to stabilize and check the readings again. Rearrange or remove obstructions if the temperature does not remain within the target.

Where specific foods belong

Eggs

Keep eggs in the carton on an interior refrigerator shelf. The carton protects the eggs and makes the date easier to read, while the interior location avoids the larger temperature swings found in door bins.

Milk, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy

Use an interior shelf or the refrigerator’s designated dairy or cheese compartment. Grouping dairy together makes it visible and reduces searching. If a drawer is labeled for cheese or has an adjustable cold setting, follow that model’s instructions rather than treating every drawer as interchangeable.

Leftovers and ready-to-eat food

Cover leftovers or place them in sealed containers. Put them where they are easy to see, rather than behind tall packages where they may be forgotten. A large pot of soup or stew should be divided into shallow containers so it cools faster; hot food may go directly into the refrigerator.

Raw meat, poultry, and seafood

Keep raw products sealed or securely wrapped. A leak-proof container is useful protection, but the container does not make an uncovered or poorly wrapped package safe. Position raw foods so a leak cannot drip onto ready-to-eat food. Use the meat drawer when the appliance provides one, while still following the model’s temperature instructions.

Fresh vegetables and fruit

Use the crisper drawers for produce and set their humidity controls according to the drawer labels. Vegetables generally benefit from higher humidity conditions, while fruit generally benefits from lower humidity conditions. Do not pack a drawer so tightly that air cannot move or that packages crush the produce.

Condiments and other door items

The door is convenient for products that are less temperature-sensitive and fit safely in its bins. It is not the place for perishable foods. USDA advises against storing perishable food in the door because that area fluctuates more than the main cabinet.

Frozen food

Group frozen food by type, such as vegetables, prepared meals, and ingredients. Keep labels facing outward when possible, leave space for airflow, and maintain the freezer at or below 0°F (-18°C). Follow any limits in the appliance manual for baskets, shelves, and ice-making equipment.

Prevent leaks and cross-contamination

Organization must protect ready-to-eat food from raw-food juices. Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood in a sealed container or securely wrapped package. If a spill occurs, wipe it up promptly and clean the affected surface with hot, soapy water. Clean containers before returning them to the refrigerator.

Store refrigerated food in covered containers or sealed bags. Covering protects food from drips and helps contain odors, but it does not replace temperature control. Keep raw packages from touching foods that will be eaten without further cooking.

Do not use smell, appearance, or taste as a safety test. FDA warns that harmful bacteria may not change a food’s appearance, smell, or taste. Temperature control, timely refrigeration, clean surfaces, and leak prevention are the reliable controls described here.

Use time and temperature safely

  • Refrigerate perishable food within two hours.
  • Use a one-hour limit when the surrounding temperature is above 90°F.
  • Divide large amounts of soup, stew, or similar food into shallow containers for faster cooling.
  • Do not crowd the refrigerator; cold air must circulate around refrigerated foods to keep them properly chilled.
  • Cover food before storing it and clean spills as soon as they occur.

These time limits apply while food is outside the refrigerator. A well-organized cabinet cannot make food safe after it has been left warm too long.

Leave space for airflow and visibility

Overpacking is one of the easiest ways to undermine an otherwise sensible arrangement. FDA’s guidance is direct: “Avoid ‘Overpacking.’ Cold air must circulate around refrigerated foods to keep them properly chilled.” Keep vents clear, avoid wedging packages against the cabinet’s airflow openings, and leave enough room to see what is behind the front row.

Visibility also reduces unnecessary door openings. Put frequently used foods in an easy-to-reach zone, group similar items, and use the shelf height that best fits the package. A Kenmore side-by-side manual recommends reducing door openings through organization, but that is model-specific advice; it should not be treated as a universal or quantified energy-saving result.

Choose an organizing approach that fits a narrow cabinet

A side-by-side refrigerator usually offers less front-to-back width than a wide French-door layout, so a system that looks orderly in a large appliance can hide food here. Start with broad categories rather than many tiny labels: ready-to-eat food, dairy, ingredients, produce, and condiments. Within each category, put the newest or soonest-to-use package where you can see it first. This creates a practical rotation without making unsupported claims about reducing waste.

There are three useful approaches. An open-shelf approach costs nothing and preserves the most airflow, but small packages can spread out. A shallow open bin groups those packages and can be lifted out for cleaning, though it consumes some usable width and may hide items behind its rim. A covered container or sealed bag is best for leftovers and raw-food containment, but it should not be used to fill every inch of the cabinet or block a vent. Choose based on visibility, leak control, cleanability, and clearance—not appearance alone.

Before purchasing any bin, measure the actual usable width, depth, and height between shelf rails and under the door. Also measure the narrowest opening the bin must pass through. Check that a loaded bin will not prevent a drawer from opening, interfere with the door seal, or sit in front of an air outlet. Organizers are optional convenience tools; a refrigerator thermometer and safe containers address more important safety needs.

Common organization mistakes to avoid

  • Putting eggs and milk in the door: frequent door opening creates greater temperature fluctuation there, so use an interior shelf instead.
  • Assuming the bottom shelf is always coldest: model design varies; verify the whole cabinet rather than relying on a universal shelf rule.
  • Leaving raw packages on an open plate: a plate may not contain a leak. Use a sealed container or secure wrapping.
  • Blocking vents with a large bin: the compartment may look neat while chilled air cannot circulate.
  • Filling a crisper until it cannot close: compression damages produce and can interfere with humidity control.
  • Changing a specialty drawer setting by guesswork: read the manual and use the drawer for the purpose stated by its manufacturer.
  • Relying on smell to decide whether food is safe: harmful bacteria may be present without an obvious odor or appearance.
  • Leaving a large hot pot intact: divide it into shallow containers so it cools more quickly.

Choosing organizer bins and containers

Organizer bins are optional convenience tools, not food-safety equipment. Before buying one, measure the shelf or door space and compare the bin’s width, height, and depth with the usable opening. A bin that blocks a vent, prevents a drawer from closing, or leaves no room for airflow makes the refrigerator harder to manage.

Option When it helps Checks before using it
No additional bin Open shelves already provide clear visibility and adequate spacing Keep categories together and avoid stacking that hides food.
Open organizer bin Grouping small, similar packages in a narrow shelf area Measure first; confirm it does not block vents, overhang shelves, or make cleaning difficult.
Covered food container or sealed bag Containing leftovers and preventing drips Use a leak-resistant closure, leave room for cooling, and clean the container promptly after a spill.
Drawer divider or tray Separating items inside a compatible crisper or specialty drawer Do not defeat the drawer’s humidity or temperature control, and follow the manual’s instructions.

Evaluate every accessory against five questions: Does it fit the available width and height? Can you see and retrieve food easily? Will it contain a leak and clean quickly? Does it leave airflow unobstructed? Does it preserve the humidity or temperature function of the compartment? If the answer to any of these is no, the accessory is not improving the storage system.

Troubleshoot an arrangement that is not working

The refrigerator thermometer reads above 40°F

  • Check that packages are not blocking vents or packed tightly against one another.
  • Confirm that the door closes fully and that bins or tall containers are not preventing closure.
  • Review the control and loading instructions in the owner’s manual.
  • Recheck the temperature after the appliance has had time to stabilize.

Until the refrigerator is back within the recommended range, treat temperature-sensitive food cautiously and avoid adding more warm food.

Food is difficult to find

Reduce the number of categories per shelf, move frequently used items into a visible zone, and adjust shelf heights where the model permits. Use a small bin only if it improves visibility without blocking airflow. Reorganize the freezer in the same way, keeping similar packages together.

A drawer is too warm, too cold, or producing poor results

Check whether the drawer has a humidity or temperature control and whether it is set for the food inside. Read the appliance manual before changing a specialty setting. Drawer behavior varies by model, so do not transfer a setting from another refrigerator.

A raw-food package leaks

Remove the package and any contaminated items, then wipe the spill and clean the surface with hot, soapy water. Rewrap or re-containerize the raw food securely before returning it. Keep ready-to-eat food protected from the affected area.

A simple maintenance routine

  • Check the refrigerator and freezer thermometers regularly.
  • Wipe spills immediately instead of allowing them to dry.
  • Confirm that covered foods remain sealed and raw packages remain leak-proof.
  • Remove excess items when airflow or visibility is reduced.
  • Review the manual when changing a drawer control, shelf position, or loading pattern.

The best layout is the one your particular side-by-side refrigerator can maintain: temperatures verified with thermometers, compartments used for their intended functions, raw foods contained, perishable foods kept away from the fluctuating door, and enough open space for cold air to circulate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I organize a side-by-side refrigerator?

Verify the refrigerator is at or below 40°F and the freezer at or below 0°F, then group foods by function. Use interior shelves for covered ready-to-eat food and dairy, crispers for produce, the specialty drawer as labeled, the door for less-sensitive items, and the freezer for grouped frozen food. Keep vents clear and raw foods sealed.

Which shelf is coldest in a side-by-side refrigerator?

There is no universal coldest shelf. Vents, controls, ice makers, and drawer designs vary by model. USDA says any location is safe when the entire refrigerator stays at or below 40°F, so use an appliance thermometer instead of assuming a shelf ranking.

Can eggs stay in the refrigerator door?

No. FDA advises keeping eggs in their carton on an interior shelf because door temperatures fluctuate more than temperatures inside the cabinet.

What belongs in the refrigerator door versus the shelves?

Reserve door bins for products that are less temperature-sensitive and fit securely, such as suitable condiments. Keep eggs, milk, meat, seafood, leftovers, and other perishables on interior shelves or in the appropriate specialty compartment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should raw meat be stored in a side-by-side refrigerator?

Keep it in a sealed container or securely wrapped package so juices cannot reach ready-to-eat food. Use the meat drawer if the appliance provides one, follow its temperature instructions, and clean any spill promptly with hot, soapy water.

Should hot food go straight into the refrigerator?

Yes. Hot food may go directly into the refrigerator. Divide a large pot of soup or stew into shallow containers so it cools faster, and avoid leaving perishable food out for more than two hours, or one hour when the surrounding temperature exceeds 90°F.

Do refrigerator organizer bins improve food safety?

Bins are convenience tools, not food-safety equipment. They can help visibility or contain small packages only if they fit, are easy to clean, do not block vents, and preserve airflow. Covered containers or sealed bags are the better choice for leak prevention.

What should I do if my refrigerator reads above 40°F?

Check for blocked vents, overpacking, or a door that cannot close fully. Review the owner’s manual, correct the setting, and recheck after the appliance stabilizes. Treat temperature-sensitive food cautiously until the refrigerator returns to 40°F or below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on smell or appearance to tell whether food is safe?

No. FDA warns that harmful bacteria may not change a food’s appearance, smell, or taste. Use temperature control, timely refrigeration, covered storage, clean surfaces, and leak prevention instead.

The Bottom Line

Organize by the compartments your model actually provides, verify 40°F or below in the refrigerator and 0°F or below in the freezer, keep perishables out of the fluctuating door, contain raw-food juices, and leave clear paths for cold air. A thermometer and correctly sized, cleanable containers are more valuable than a crowded collection of bins.
