The safest, clearest setup is to agree the appeal with the shelter first, send viewers to a direct-to-charity checkout, and run a moderated stream with written rules, transparent disclosures and a documented closeout. Do not treat money sent to your channel, subscriptions or Bits as charitable donations unless the donation is processed through an eligible charity system.
1. Agree on the fundraiser before you announce it
Contact the animal shelter and obtain written approval before creating a campaign page, using its name or publishing its logo. The shelter should be able to confirm that it is the intended beneficiary and that the proposed game, audience and fundraising language are appropriate.

Confirm the beneficiary and purpose
Record the shelter’s exact legal name, the project the money will support, the country in which it is registered, and who will own and administer the fundraising page. A concrete purpose helps viewers understand the appeal, but it can also make donations restricted to that purpose. Ask the shelter to approve wording such as medical treatment, kennel repairs, emergency food, sterilisation or a named equipment purchase rather than describing the appeal only as general support.
Write a secondary purpose
Agree what happens if the target is exceeded, the item becomes unavailable, costs change or the project cannot proceed. Put that fallback in the appeal before launch. The Charity Commission gives the model of saying that money left after buying a scanner, or money received when the scanner cannot be bought, will be spent on other equipment for the rescue centre. Your shelter should approve equivalent wording for its own circumstances.

Use a short written agreement
The document does not need to be complicated, but it should assign responsibilities and prevent disagreements.
- Beneficiary name, registration details and primary purpose.
- Approved description, images, logos and any restrictions on their use.
- Donation platform, account owner and who can change the campaign page.
- Whether the shelter or the organiser answers donor questions and handles refunds.
- Any costs, platform deductions, payment-processing charges or currency conversion.
- Target, dates, milestones and the method for reporting the final amount.
- Secondary purpose for excess, unusable or redirected funds.
- Privacy, safeguarding and permission rules for shelter staff, volunteers and animal images.
- How records, receipts and donor information will be retained under the shelter’s policies.
Do not imply that the shelter endorses your channel beyond the permission it actually gave. If the shelter asks you to change the campaign or stop using its materials, follow that instruction promptly.
2. Choose a donation route that sends money to the charity
The central distinction is who receives the donor’s payment. Twitch’s charitable-donations guidance says a charitable donation is made through Twitch Charity, a charitable fundraising platform such as Tiltify, or the charity’s own fundraising system. A viewer who pays a streamer through an ordinary tip, subscription or Bits is supporting the creator; it is not automatically a charitable donation or a tax-deductible contribution, even if the creator later intends to give some of the money away.

| Route | How money moves | Receipt and tax position | Checks before launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twitch Charity | The viewer uses the channel’s Donate to Charity control and the charity receives the donation through the connected system. | Twitch says the tool does not take a cut of donations and that the viewer receives a PayPal Giving Fund receipt. Tax treatment depends on the donor’s jurisdiction and the receipt issued. | The shelter must be listed and enrolled in good standing with PayPal Giving Fund. Twitch’s current FAQ describes support for US charities and USD donations. |
| Recognized fundraising platform | The platform hosts the campaign and routes donations under its current agreement with the selected charity. | Receipt, fees, payout timing and donor-data handling vary. Read the platform’s current terms and confirm what the shelter receives. | Verify the shelter’s profile, legal name, campaign ownership, country and currency availability before sharing the link. |
| Shelter’s own fundraising system | Viewers give through the shelter’s official donation page or payment form. | The shelter controls the receipt and any tax acknowledgement. Ask it what donors should expect. | Obtain the exact URL, campaign code or instructions from the shelter and test the path without making a misleading test donation. |
| Payment to the streamer | The creator receives a tip, subscription, Bits or other channel revenue and may later transfer money to the shelter. | The payment is creator income or support, not a direct charitable donation. The creator is responsible for accounting, transfer and any applicable tax. | Describe the arrangement precisely and never promise a donor a charity receipt for the creator payment. |
Compare routes on six practical questions: is the shelter listed and eligible; does money go directly to it; what receipt is issued; which countries and currencies work; what campaign, moderation and reporting controls exist; and what fees, payout delays and data practices apply. If a platform’s terms are unclear, ask the shelter before publishing the link.
3. Set up Twitch Charity when the shelter is eligible
Twitch’s documented workflow is designed to replace the normal channel control with a charity-specific call to action. Availability is not universal, so check the shelter’s eligibility first.

- Open the Twitch Creator Dashboard and confirm that the shelter appears in the Charity section and is eligible for the available currency and country.
- Read the charity profile carefully. Match its legal name and location to the details supplied by the shelter.
- Create the campaign, set a realistic target and enter the approved purpose and fallback language.
- Review the page as a viewer. Check the charity name, target, dates, spelling, image permissions and destination before going live.
- Enable the Donate to Charity control rather than presenting a normal tip button as the donation method.
- Place the same charity link in the stream description, chat command, scheduled-event page and any social post that promotes the event.
- Save the campaign confirmation and any available progress records for the final reconciliation.
Twitch says viewers receive a PayPal Giving Fund receipt for donations made through the Charity tool. The receipt is not a promise that every donor can claim a deduction: eligibility and tax treatment depend on the donor’s country and circumstances.
4. Use another platform when Twitch cannot list the shelter
If the shelter does not appear in Twitch Charity, ask whether it already uses a recognized service such as Tiltify, JustGiving or Streamlabs Charity, or whether it prefers its own donation page. Verify the charity profile directly with the shelter, because similarly named organisations can appear in search results.

Keep the platform’s current terms with your event records. A platform’s availability, currency support and fee schedule can change, so do not copy assumptions from an earlier event.
5. Write donation-page and on-screen copy that cannot mislead
Every public description should identify the shelter, purpose, route and limits in plain language. State whether any costs are deducted and include the approved secondary purpose. If the shelter is receiving direct donations, say so; if you are donating channel revenue later, describe the percentage, calculation and timing instead of calling the payment a donation made by the viewer.
Example direct-donation wording
We are raising funds for [shelter legal name] to support [approved purpose]. Donations made through the Donate to Charity link go to the shelter through the selected charity system. Platform fees, receipt details and tax treatment follow that system's terms. If the stated project cannot proceed or funds remain after it is completed, the shelter may use the balance for [approved secondary purpose].

Example creator-revenue wording
Subscriptions, Bits and ordinary tips support this channel. Separately, I will donate 25% of my Twitch payout attributable to this event, calculated after [define deductions], to [shelter legal name] by [date]. That creator payment is not a direct charitable donation by viewers.
Do not say that every subscription funds an animal, that the shelter receives 100% unless that is documented, or that a donor will receive a tax deduction unless the charity system and local rules support the claim.
6. Design the stream around a clear, achievable action
Choose an age-appropriate game
Check the game’s PEGI rating or the rating system used in your audience’s country. Consider violence, language, gambling-like mechanics, frightening content and voice-chat exposure. A game can be technically permitted for a younger audience while still being unsuitable for the tone of a shelter fundraiser.
Set the schedule and target
Publish the start and finish times, time zone, fundraising target, donation deadline and what happens if the target is reached early. Use milestones that do not pressure people to overspend: a new game mode, a shelter Q&A, an extra hour, a challenge chosen in advance or a thank-you message from the shelter.
Make the call to action accessible
- Keep the direct donation link visible in the panel, description and pinned chat message.
- Read the link and purpose aloud for viewers who are not looking at the chat.
- Use captions where available and describe important on-screen information.
- Explain the difference between the charity button and creator-support buttons once at the start.
- Offer a no-pressure way to participate, such as sharing the event or learning about the shelter.
Prepare a short run sheet with opening disclosure, donation explanation, milestone timings, moderator handoffs, breaks, shelter appearances and closing remarks. This prevents improvised claims when the chat is busy.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

7. Moderate the stream and protect people and animals
The Fundraising Regulator’s online gaming guidance recommends moderators, age-rating checks, clear fundraising communications and safety and wellbeing procedures. Appoint at least one person who is not playing and can watch chat, remove abusive content, answer routine questions and escalate incidents.
Give moderators written authority
- Publish chat rules before the event and pin them at the start.
- Define which comments trigger deletion, timeout, ban or escalation.
- Keep the donation link and approved wording in a moderator-only reference message.
- Provide a method for reporting harassment, impersonation, suspicious links or animal-welfare misinformation.
- Decide who contacts the shelter, platform or emergency services if a serious incident occurs.
Protect wellbeing
Schedule breaks for the host and moderators, monitor fatigue and stop the event if harassment, doxxing, self-harm threats, malware links or unsafe challenges appear. Do not show identifiable shelter locations, intake records, adopter details or vulnerable animals without permission. Disable or restrict in-game voice chat when it cannot be moderated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Handle sponsors, affiliates and paid promoters as regulated relationships
A business that gives a proportion of sales, an affiliate arrangement that generates commission, or a creator paid to promote the appeal may fall under commercial-participator or professional-fundraiser rules. The Fundraising Regulator distinguishes volunteers raising money in aid of a charity from people acting on the charity’s behalf for payment.
Before accepting money or a promotional commitment:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify every paid, affiliate or in-kind relationship and tell the shelter.
- Perform basic due diligence on the business or promoter, including identity, reputation and the suitability of its products.
- Sign a written agreement stating the exact amount or percentage, calculation base, payment date, expenses, content approvals and each party’s legal responsibilities.
- Label the relationship clearly on stream, in the description and wherever the promotion appears.
- Track sales, codes, commissions and transfers so the promised amount can be checked.
Do not let a sponsor’s logo or sales message obscure the charity’s identity or imply that buying a product is the same as making a direct donation.

9. Treat raffles, competitions and incentives separately
Prize draws, paid entries, prediction games and other mechanics can be regulated as gambling or prize competitions. Rules vary by country and, in Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency notes that provinces and territories regulate gaming activities. Check the law where participants are located before adding a raffle, entry fee or chance-based reward.
Keep the fundraiser viable without a prize mechanic. If you offer an incentive, publish eligibility, closing time, selection method, prize description, geographic limits, age requirement and any free-entry route required by law. Ask the shelter whether it can accept or administer the incentive. Gift Aid and other tax-relief rules may also apply to qualifying incentives; never promise relief without confirming the applicable rules.
10. Operate the event with an audit trail
During the stream, record the platform dashboard total at agreed intervals, screenshots of milestone achievements and any creator-revenue calculation needed for a later transfer. Keep a separate log for sponsor commitments, refunds, chargebacks and non-cash gifts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen viewers ask where money goes, answer from the approved script. If a platform outage or payment error occurs, announce the problem, pause claims about the running total and post the verified replacement link. Never ask viewers to send money to an unfamiliar account in chat.
11. Close out and report the result
- Stop accepting donations at the published deadline or clearly extend it with a new end time.
- Export or record the final platform total, fees, refunds and payout status.
- Reconcile direct charity receipts with the platform report. Separately calculate any creator revenue you promised to donate.
- Transfer creator revenue through the shelter’s approved method and retain confirmation.
- Ask the shelter to confirm the amount received or granted, subject to its privacy and accounting policy.
- Publish the final amount, date sent, route used, known deductions and any variance from the on-screen total.
- Explain remaining or redirected funds using the secondary purpose approved before launch.
- Thank donors, moderators, sponsors and the shelter without publishing donor information they did not consent to share.
- Store agreements, campaign pages, receipts, reports and incident notes according to the shelter’s retention policy.
A transparent closeout distinguishes money donated directly by viewers from creator revenue, sponsorship income and in-kind support. That separation is what lets the shelter and donors understand the result.
Quick Recap
12. Troubleshooting common failures
| Problem | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The shelter is missing from Twitch Charity. | It may not be in a supported country, currency or PayPal Giving Fund status. | Ask the shelter to confirm eligibility, then use its approved platform or own donation page. Do not substitute a similarly named charity. |
| Viewers think subscriptions are donations. | The charity and creator controls are visually adjacent or the script is vague. | Explain the distinction, label each button and use the direct charity link for the appeal. |
| The target total and shelter total differ. | Fees, refunds, currency conversion, delayed payouts or separate revenue streams were mixed. | Reconcile each stream separately and publish the reason for the variance. |
| A sponsor has not paid its promised share. | The agreement lacked a calculation base, deadline or records. | Use the written contract, document the shortfall and tell the shelter before reporting a final result. |
| Chat posts a fake donation link. | Impersonation or a compromised account is redirecting viewers. | Remove the message, warn viewers through the verified channel, report the account and keep only the approved link in pinned locations. |
| The stream becomes unsafe or unmanageable. | Insufficient moderation, fatigue, abusive content or an unsuitable game. | Pause or end the broadcast, preserve relevant evidence, check on affected people and review the safety plan before any restart. |
