Sort by drive size first, then by measurement system (metric or SAE), then by size, and keep shallow and deep sockets in separate runs. Give specialty sockets their own clearly marked zone, and return every piece to one fixed position with its size marking facing you. That order matches how manufacturers list these kits. It is a recommended workflow, not a tested one: none of the sources reviewed measured search time or compared layouts.
Start with what “192-piece” actually means
The count does not identify one universal assortment. DEWALT’s DWMT75049 192-piece set is one sourced example. It uses 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch drives, includes SAE and metric sockets, and lists shallow and deep socket groups. BGS technic also sells a 192-piece socket set tray, and its contents differ. Before you reorganize, lay out your own set and count what you have by drive, type and size. The steps below apply to any large set, but your piece list and case layout may differ from these examples.

The sorting order, step by step

Separate by drive size
Make one group each for 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch (if your set has all three). Drive size is the first physical constraint: it decides which ratchet and extension a socket can use, so it is the cleanest first cut.

Split metric from SAE inside each drive
Within a drive group, keep metric and SAE in separate rows or sections. Mixing them is the most common reason a 13 mm and a 1/2-inch socket get confused, since they are close in size.

Order by size
Run each row from smallest to largest, left to right or front to back. Keep that direction the same in every row, so your hand learns one pattern.

Keep shallow and deep sockets in distinct runs
Do not interleave them. Put the deep sockets in a parallel row directly behind or beside the shallow ones, so the same size sits in the same column.

Give specialty sockets their own marked section
Spark-plug sockets, bit sockets and E-type (external Torx-style) sockets are used less often and look different from standard sockets. A visibly separate zone stops them cluttering the main rows.

Group the drivers and accessories
Keep ratchets, extensions, adapters and universal joints together by drive size, or in adjacent labeled groups, so the ratchet and extension for a given drive are never in different places.

Assign each tool a fixed position
Return every piece to the same slot, with its size marking readable when stored. Empty slots then show immediately what is missing.
Check that the markings are readable
Fast identification depends on being able to read the size stamped on the socket. DEWALT’s page lists hand-stamped markings, while an authorized listing for the same model describes laser-etched markings. Those descriptions may reflect different markets or revisions, so check what is actually on your sockets. If markings are faint, orient each socket so the stamped end faces up or outward, and consider an added label on the tray beside the slot rather than on the tool.

Keep the case, add a tray, or use a rail?
If the original molded case already shows sockets legibly, keep that layout and simply make missing pieces easy to spot. If it does not, a size-marked foam tray or socket rail is an optional fix. BGS describes its tray as having individual positions with non-slip recesses, and a GEARWRENCH set contents document describes high-visibility markings and a foam storage tray designed for accessibility. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent tests.

Socket dimensions and organizer sizes vary, and none of the sources verifies that a given organizer fits an unspecified set. Check the organizer’s drive range, capacity and dimensions against your sockets before buying.

Adjust for how you work
The fastest arrangement depends on your common tasks. If you mostly work on one system, such as metric on cars, put that group at the front or top. Put the sockets you reach for daily where your hand lands first, and leave the rarely used specialty pieces toward the back.
