Start by checking whether your computer meets Planet Zoo 2’s published minimum: an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, a GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB, Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB or Intel Arc A750 8 GB, DirectX 12 and 40 GB of storage. If it does, select the lowest graphics preset, test a stable frame rate, then raise one setting at a time. If lowering quality barely changes performance, the limit is probably the CPU, simulation, heat or background software rather than the GPU. Computers below the minimum may need cloud gaming instead of more graphics tweaking.

Check the minimum before changing a slider

Planet Zoo 2’s minimum specification is not a lightweight target. The Epic Games Store listing from 2026 specifies an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, 16 GB of system memory, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 with 6 GB of video memory, an AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT with 6 GB, or an Intel Arc A750 with 8 GB. DirectX 12 is required, and the installation needs 40 GB of storage. An SSD is recommended.

The recommended tier is substantially faster: an Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, paired with a GeForce RTX 3070 with 8 GB, Radeon RX 6700 XT with 12 GB, or Intel Arc A770 with 16 GB. The recommended specification requires an SSD. These are two different targets: the minimum describes the supported entry point, while the recommended specification leaves more headroom for large zoos, higher image quality and steadier frame delivery.

Component Minimum listed for Planet Zoo 2 Recommended listing What the difference means
CPU Intel i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Intel i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X A faster processor gives the simulation more room as animal counts, guests and facilities grow.
Memory 16 GB RAM No separate memory figure appears in the Epic Games Store listing from 2026 Below 16 GB, Windows and the game have less working space and stutter can become more likely.
Graphics RTX 2060 6 GB, RX 5600 XT 6 GB or Arc A750 8 GB RTX 3070 8 GB, RX 6700 XT 12 GB or Arc A770 16 GB The recommended GPUs provide more rendering capacity and video-memory headroom.
API DirectX 12 DirectX 12 A system that cannot provide DirectX 12 is outside the listed baseline.
Storage 40 GB SSD required Keep at least the stated capacity free; an SSD helps loading and streaming but does not guarantee higher FPS.

Compare your exact processor, graphics card, RAM and DirectX support with the table before spending money. A machine below the CPU, GPU, RAM or DirectX baseline is outside the supported target, so settings changes may not make it playable.

Establish a clean baseline

Do not change ten options at once. A baseline tells you whether a change helped and prevents a high-quality setting from masking a separate problem.

  1. Close the zoo or save a repeatable test location. Use the same camera position and roughly the same number of guests and animals each time. Simulation load changes as a zoo grows, so comparing unrelated saves can produce misleading results.
  2. Select the lowest available graphics preset. Apply it, restart the game if the menu requests a restart, and play long enough to encounter the area that normally stutters. Record the approximate frame rate and whether the problem is constant or occurs only during camera movement.
  3. Choose a practical frame-rate target. A stable, lower target is generally more useful than a high number that repeatedly drops. Keep the target consistent while testing; otherwise you cannot tell whether a setting improved frame pacing.
  4. Change one option at a time. Raise a single setting, test the same scene, and keep it only if the visual improvement is worth the performance cost.

Frontier’s official performance guidance says, “You may find it helpful to lower the graphics quality of the game itself from the in-game menu.” That is the safest first intervention because it changes several expensive effects together and gives you a known starting point.

Lower resolution only after the preset test

If the lowest preset is still too slow, reduce output resolution. Frontier specifically recommends temporarily lowering Windows resolution as a troubleshooting step. This can show whether the graphics processor is the limiting component, although the desktop will look softer while testing.

Use the game’s own resolution control if the shipped menu provides one. Resolution scale, upscaling support and their exact labels should be verified in the released build; no complete launch menu or measured performance ranking is published. Treat any in-game scale option as a practical experiment rather than a guaranteed fix.

Lowering resolution usually helps a graphics-bound workload because fewer pixels must be rendered. If the frame rate barely changes, restore the resolution and investigate CPU load, simulation size, temperatures and background programs instead. Reducing image quality cannot remove a processor bottleneck.

Test expensive settings as heuristics, not proven rankings

No current official Planet Zoo 2 source publishes a slider-by-slider FPS ranking. Shadows, volumetric effects, view distance and any upscaling or ray-tracing options are therefore testable heuristics, not measured facts. The exact menu and ray-tracing behavior should be confirmed in the version you play.

Shadows

Test the shadow setting first if the game exposes separate shadow quality or distance controls. Lower values can reduce the number and resolution of shadow maps, but the visual benefit varies by scene. Compare an outdoor enclosure with trees, buildings and fences because a nearly empty test area may hide the cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Volumetric and atmospheric effects

If fog, clouds, lighting shafts or volumetric quality appears in the menu, lower it temporarily. These effects can be costly in scenes with large sight lines. Keep notes on both average smoothness and sudden drops; a setting that changes only a brief effect may not be worth sacrificing globally.

View distance and level of detail

Lower view distance or level-of-detail controls when camera movement across a large zoo causes the largest slowdown. The trade-off is earlier detail transitions and less distant scenery. Test from a high vantage point over the busiest part of the park rather than from inside a small building.

Textures and texture filtering

Texture quality often depends more on video-memory capacity than on raw shading speed. If your card has the listed 6 GB minimum, lowering textures can be useful when memory warnings, hitching or texture pop-in accompany movement. If memory is not the problem, reducing textures may deliver little FPS improvement while making surfaces noticeably blurrier.

Anti-aliasing and reflections

Where separate anti-aliasing, reflection or screen-space reflection controls exist, test them after shadows and distance settings. Use the same camera angle for each comparison. No current official source establishes which of these costs the most in Planet Zoo 2, so do not assume an internet ranking applies to your build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ray tracing and upscaling

Do not enable ray tracing on a minimum-specification system unless you have already established comfortable performance without it. Support for ray tracing and upscaling, and the exact quality modes, should be checked in the shipped game. If an upscaler is present, compare its image at the same output resolution and keep it only when the gain in smoothness outweighs artifacts such as shimmering or softness.

Find out whether the GPU or CPU is limiting you

A graphics preset can only help when rendering is the main constraint. Monitor CPU utilization, per-thread activity, GPU utilization, temperatures and clock behavior while reproducing the slowdown. Planet Zoo 2 has no published benchmark for this diagnosis.

  • GPU-bound pattern: GPU utilization stays high, lowering resolution or visual quality increases FPS, and temperatures remain within the computer’s normal operating range. Keep the lower setting that gives the desired stability.
  • CPU-bound pattern: overall GPU utilization is modest while one or more CPU threads are saturated, especially when the zoo is busy. Lowering shadows or resolution may barely change FPS. Reduce simulation complexity where the game allows it, avoid very large test zoos, and investigate background load before buying a graphics card.
  • Thermal pattern: performance starts acceptably and declines after several minutes as the laptop or desktop heats up. Check temperatures and clock speeds during the drop, not just at launch.
  • Background-load pattern: the game stutters when recording, an overlay or a browser is active but behaves better when those programs are closed. Repeat the same scene with competing software disabled.

Planet Zoo is a simulation-heavy game, so animal counts, guest numbers, pathing and facility activity can make the processor the limiting part even when the scene does not look graphically complex. A newer graphics card will not solve a CPU-limited zoo.

Remove overlays and background programs

For a controlled test, close browser tabs and other demanding applications, then disable overlays and recording tools temporarily. Frontier’s support guidance states: “Turn off any background programs, especially those that add additional overlays or screen recording functionality.” Its examples include GeForce Experience, OBS, FRAPS, XSplit, Xbox Game Bar, Overwolf, Discord, Mumble, MSI Afterburner, Xbox Game DVR and NVIDIA ShadowPlay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable one category at a time if you need to identify the culprit. First stop recording, then turn off chat or game overlays, and finally close hardware-monitoring overlays. Keep a written note of what was disabled so you can restore the tools after testing. If performance changes only when an overlay is removed, use that application’s per-game exclusion or leave its overlay off while playing rather than lowering every graphics setting.

Control heat, especially on laptops

Frontier advises checking whether the computer is too hot when troubleshooting performance. A laptop deserves particular attention because its cooling system has less space and may reduce clock speeds after sustained play. Test on a hard, unobstructed surface, clear dust from vents according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and verify that the fans can exhaust air.

Watch temperatures and clock speeds while the slowdown is happening. A brief temperature reading at the main menu is not useful. If clocks fall as heat rises, lowering graphics quality may reduce some heat, but it does not repair blocked vents, a failing fan or an inadequate cooling system. A cooling pad is an accessory category rather than a guaranteed solution; its benefit depends on the laptop’s intake design and condition.

Do not invent a universal “safe” temperature from a single number. CPU and GPU limits differ by model, and the manufacturer’s specifications are the appropriate reference. The important diagnostic signal is a repeatable performance decline that tracks rising temperature and falling clocks.

Make sure storage is not creating stutter

Keep at least 40 GB free for the game, matching the published requirement. Leave additional working space for Windows and updates rather than filling the drive to its limit. If the installation is on a hard disk, moving it to an SSD is worthwhile where possible because an SSD is recommended in the official listing and required for the recommended tier.

An SSD can improve loading and asset streaming, but it is not a promise of higher average FPS. If the frame rate is low because the CPU is saturated or the GPU is fully occupied, changing storage will not remove that bottleneck. Use the same save and camera path before and after the move so you can distinguish shorter loads from actual rendering improvement.

Use a repeatable settings workflow

The following order minimizes wasted time and makes each result interpretable.

  1. Verify the platform: compare CPU, GPU, RAM, DirectX 12 support and free storage with the minimum table.
  2. Prepare the test: close browsers, recorders and overlays; check that the computer is not overheating.
  3. Apply the lowest preset: test the same busy zoo area and record smoothness.
  4. Lower resolution: use the game’s control if available, or temporarily lower Windows resolution as Frontier recommends.
  5. Identify the bottleneck: observe GPU utilization, individual CPU-thread load, temperatures and clocks.
  6. Tune one visual group: test shadows, volumetrics, view distance, textures, reflections and anti-aliasing individually, treating the order as a heuristic.
  7. Recheck a growing zoo: a setting that works in a small tutorial park may fail when guests, animals and buildings multiply.
  8. Move to SSD if needed: confirm 40 GB is free and compare loading or streaming behavior separately from FPS.

Keep the setting that meets your stability target with the least distracting image-quality loss. There is no benefit in chasing a theoretical maximum if camera movement still produces repeated hitching.

Choose between tuning, upgrading and cloud play

Situation Most useful next step Why
PC meets minimum and GPU utilization is high Lower resolution, shadows, volumetrics or distance settings The rendering workload is the likely limit.
PC meets minimum but one CPU thread is saturated Reduce zoo complexity and background load; keep visual changes modest Graphics reductions cannot remove a simulation or processor bottleneck.
Performance falls after several minutes Check temperatures, vents, fans and sustained clocks Thermal throttling can erase the benefit of an initially adequate configuration.
Stutter improves when overlays close Leave recording and overlays disabled or configure per-game exclusions Competing software was consuming system time or adding capture overhead.
System is below the CPU, GPU, RAM or DirectX minimum Consider a hardware upgrade or cloud gaming Settings tweaks cannot make an unsupported baseline reliable.
Loads are long but FPS is otherwise acceptable Move the installation to an SSD and keep 40 GB free An SSD addresses storage latency, not every performance problem.

A current requirements guide identifies GeForce NOW as the official cloud option for players without high-powered hardware. Availability, supported editions, data-center location, subscription terms and game support can change, so verify those details at the time you decide. Cloud play also depends on a stable internet connection and adds streaming latency; it is an alternative to local rendering, not a graphics-setting fix.

Common symptoms and the correct response

“Lowering graphics barely changes my frame rate.”

Check GPU utilization and individual CPU-thread load first. If the GPU is not busy while a CPU thread is saturated, the zoo simulation or another process is limiting performance. Compare a small, quiet zoo with the large save that stutters, then close overlays and check temperatures. Buying a faster GPU before this diagnosis may leave the problem unchanged.

“The game starts smoothly and then slows down.”

Monitor heat and clock speeds throughout the session. A sustained decline points toward cooling or thermal throttling. If temperatures and clocks remain normal, compare the number of guests, animals and active facilities with the earlier test; simulation demand can grow as the park develops.

“The lowest preset is still too slow.”

Temporarily lower Windows resolution, test with all listed overlays and recording tools closed, and confirm that the PC reaches the minimum CPU, GPU, RAM and DirectX requirements. If it remains below a usable frame rate and the hardware is below minimum, stop spending time on individual sliders and consider an upgrade or verified cloud option.

“I get stutter even though average FPS looks acceptable.”

Repeat the same camera path while watching frame-time behavior, temperatures and background activity. Close browser tabs and overlays, then compare the installation on an SSD if it is currently on a hard disk. Average FPS can hide short stalls caused by streaming, contention or thermal changes.

“Which single setting should I lower first?”

There is no authoritative Planet Zoo 2 ranking. Start with the lowest preset, then test shadows, volumetric effects and view distance because they are reasonable visual-cost experiments. Keep the change only if your own repeatable scene shows a useful improvement.

What the published evidence does and does not establish

The official requirements establish the minimum and recommended hardware, DirectX 12, storage capacity and SSD guidance. Frontier’s support instructions establish the broad troubleshooting order: verify specifications, lower in-game graphics quality, temporarily lower Windows resolution if necessary, disable demanding background programs and overlays, and check heat.

They do not establish a complete slider-by-slider FPS chart, a universal best resolution, a guaranteed benefit from an SSD, or a fixed performance result for every zoo size. Launch-menu labels, upscaling modes and ray-tracing behavior should be checked in the released build. Use the workflow above to measure your own combination of hardware, save file and frame-rate target instead of treating an unmeasured ranking as fact.
