For a conventional single-output Twitch stream, start with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate your internet connection and computer can sustain together. Twitch’s sample profiles are starting points—not guarantees. Test with the same game and workload you expect to stream, and favor a stable stream over a higher setting that drops frames.
Start with OBS’s Twitch output baseline
In OBS, open Settings > Output and select an output mode that exposes the streaming encoder controls. Twitch’s conventional single-output guidance recommends Constant Bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval. CBR keeps the configured bitrate predictable; variable bitrate can swing between quieter and more demanding moments.
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Twitch’s guidance notes that a consistent interval also helps viewer quality options transition smoothly when transcoding is available.
Choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together
Twitch lists these example configurations: 1080p at 60 fps with 6000 kbps, 720p at 60 fps with 4500 kbps, and 720p at 30 fps with 3000 kbps. These are Twitch recommendations, not a promise that your upload connection or route to a particular ingest server can sustain them.

| Example output | Twitch-listed bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6000 kbps | When both your system and connection can sustain the higher workload. |
| 720p, 60 fps | 4500 kbps | When smooth motion matters but 1080p60 is too demanding. |
| 720p, 30 fps | 3000 kbps | When a lower frame rate and bitrate improve stability. |
As a troubleshooting starting point, OBS Project’s 2024 guidance suggests using about 75% of your total upload speed for bitrate. Keep additional headroom for other household or studio traffic. A speed test measures a general connection at that moment; it does not prove that the route to Twitch’s chosen ingest server is stable.
Set the canvas and output resolution
In Settings > Video, OBS’s Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace in which you arrange sources; it is often your monitor or game resolution. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size sent to viewers. For example, you can keep a 1080p canvas while sending a 720p output.

Higher output resolutions and frame rates require more bandwidth and encoding work. For fast-moving games, 60 fps can make motion smoother if your computer and connection handle it. If they do not, test 30 fps, a lower output resolution, or both. There is no single best Twitch resolution for every game, PC, and connection.
Do not tune to a bitrate number alone
Compare settings by the picture viewers receive, frame delivery stability, upload headroom, ingest-route reliability, and the load placed on your CPU or GPU. A nominally sharper profile is a worse choice if it causes persistent dropped frames.

Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
OBS offers hardware encoders that move encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component in the GPU. OBS says modern hardware encoders generally provide good quality with minimal performance impact, while older generations may produce lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate.
x264 uses substantial CPU. Twitch suggests starting with the veryfast preset and experimenting cautiously; Twitch warns that presets slower than Faster require CPUs with six or more cores. A heavier preset is not automatically better if it leaves too little CPU capacity for the game or causes encoding lag.

Try the available hardware encoder and x264 on your own system under the actual game workload. No encoder choice can be declared best for all hardware generations, and a setting that works in a menu may fail once a demanding game is running.
Understand Twitch viewer quality options and Enhanced Broadcasting
Twitch transcoding can give viewers choices among different playback qualities, but availability depends on account tier: Partners are guaranteed full access, Affiliates receive it as available with priority, and other streamers receive it as available. Do not assume every viewer will be able to select a lower-resolution version of your stream.

Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting is a separate configuration path that provides automatic stream configuration and multiple client-side encodes. Twitch says Enhanced Broadcasting is required for Dual Format Streaming and its 2K workflow. If you use those features, conventional single-output settings are not the whole setup; follow Twitch’s current Enhanced Broadcasting setup instructions. A complete OBS-version and operating-system compatibility matrix is not established here, so confirm eligibility and current requirements in Twitch’s documentation before changing workflows.

- Run a private test or otherwise test before going live. OBS recommends checking that the stream runs smoothly before a real broadcast.
- Use the game and workload you expect to stream. Check OBS statistics during demanding scenes, not just at a quiet desktop.
- Change one class of setting at a time. If you lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate together, it becomes harder to tell which change solved the problem.
- Keep the profile that delivers reliably. Twitch’s guidance is to favor stability over settings that push the connection to its limit.
Fix dropped frames and other common streaming problems
OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames usually point first to an unstable or insufficient connection to the ingest server, rather than proving that the encoder is at fault. Lower the video bitrate and try a different Twitch server. On Windows, OBS says TwitchTest can help identify a server with a good Quality score. Leave upload headroom even if a speed test appears fast enough.
The connection is stable, but encoding or rendering struggles
Reduce the workload and test again: lower output resolution or frame rate, try the other available encoder, and check whether the game is consuming too much of the computer’s resources. If a particular x264 preset causes trouble, return to a faster preset rather than keeping a CPU-heavy setting at the expense of stream performance.
Bitrate changes seem to help only temporarily
OBS notes that dynamically changing bitrate can help manage congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection issue and may reduce picture quality. If congestion or route instability persists, lower the target bitrate, test another ingest server, and investigate the connection rather than treating automatic bitrate changes as a permanent cure.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not stream to Twitch or go live from a camera. For Twitch, use the OBS setup above. If your separate goal is a 24/7 YouTube loop, the process is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on.
