The safest way to tune an older PC with an NVIDIA GPU is to optimize one game at a time. In NVIDIA App, open Graphics, select the game, move the Performance-to-Quality slider toward Performance, choose Optimize, and review every proposed change before applying it. NVIDIA builds those recommendations from your GPU, CPU, and display, so they are a useful starting point—not a guaranteed low-end preset or a promise of a particular frame-rate increase.
What NVIDIA App can—and cannot—do on an older PC
NVIDIA App provides a central place to inspect and change supported game graphics settings. Its automatic recommendations consider three parts of your system: the NVIDIA GPU, the CPU, and the connected display. That personalization is why the same slider position can produce different recommendations on two computers, even when they run the same game.

The app does not provide one universally correct “low-end” configuration. A setting that is reasonable for an older desktop with a fast processor may be unsuitable for a laptop whose CPU is the limiting component. Likewise, a display’s native resolution changes how expensive a game is to render. Treat Optimize as a first pass that you can inspect, test, and undo rather than as an NVIDIA-certified performance guarantee.
No general FPS percentage can be promised from these controls. Any gain depends on the particular game, resolution, driver, background workload, and hardware limits. The useful outcome is a repeatable process: change a small, clearly scoped set of options, test the game, identify the bottleneck, and then decide whether another reduction in image quality is worth it.

Prepare before changing a game
- Choose one title. Start with the game that has the clearest performance problem instead of changing every game at once.
- Record your current settings. A screenshot or written note of the game’s graphics menu makes it easier to restore a setting that you prefer.
- Use a repeatable test. Play the same demanding level, match, save, or benchmark section before and after the change. Do not compare a quiet menu with a busy scene.
- Keep the first change reversible. Per-game settings are easier to diagnose than a global change applied to every title.
- Check the current app labels. NVIDIA can change menu names and supported functions between releases. If your layout differs, use the current Graphics panel rather than assuming an older tutorial’s path is identical.
These steps do not require buying a new GPU, extra memory, storage, cooling, or an accessory. Software tuning can reduce the work a game asks the existing hardware to do, but it cannot remove a hardware limit.
Use NVIDIA App’s Optimize workflow
- Open the game list. Launch NVIDIA App and select Graphics. Choose the specific game you want to tune. NVIDIA describes this panel as the place to configure resolution and screen options, use Optimize, and inspect in-game settings.
- Favor performance when smoothness matters most. Move the Performance-to-Quality slider toward Performance. The slider controls the type of recommendations the app will make; it is not a direct FPS control.
- Run Optimize. Select Optimize and wait for the proposed changes to appear. The app uses information about your GPU, CPU, and display to generate them.
- Review the proposed settings. Read the listed in-game changes in the Graphics panel. Check resolution, screen mode, and individual quality choices before accepting them. If one change would make the game unacceptable to you, leave it unchanged and apply only the adjustments you understand.
- Apply them to this game first. Keep the configuration at the game level while diagnosing performance. Use Global Settings only when you deliberately want the same behavior across all games and applications.
- Launch and test the actual game. Play a demanding section for long enough to notice frame pacing, input response, image clarity, and stutter. A change that looks good in a menu may behave differently during combat, driving, or a crowded scene.
- Iterate one decision at a time. If performance is still inadequate, return to the game’s own graphics menu and lower the options that demand the most from the system. Test again before making another broad change.
Optimize is therefore a recommendation engine, not a locked preset. You remain in control of which proposed settings are accepted and whether they apply to one title or everything installed.
Choose per-game or global settings deliberately
| Scope | What it changes | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-game | Only the selected title’s supported settings | Diagnosing one game, testing an older title, or preserving different preferences between games | Requires repeating the process for other titles |
| Global Settings | Settings intended to affect all games and applications covered by the app | A deliberate system-wide policy you want everywhere | A setting that helps one game can reduce quality or cause unwanted behavior in another |
When a problem appears in only one title, begin with its per-game profile. Global changes make it harder to tell which game-specific setting caused an improvement or a new problem. After you have a stable configuration, you can decide whether a particular change is truly appropriate across your library.
How to choose a position on the Performance-to-Quality slider
| Slider direction | What to expect | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Toward Performance | Optimize is encouraged to favor less demanding game settings, with image-quality trade-offs possible | Frame delivery and responsiveness matter more than maximum detail |
| Middle | A compromise between the app’s performance-oriented and quality-oriented recommendations | You want to preserve visual detail while addressing moderate slowdown |
| Toward Quality | Recommendations favor visual fidelity and may leave more rendering work enabled | The game already runs acceptably and you are trying to improve appearance |
The slider does not measure your game in real time and does not guarantee a fixed frame rate. If a title is CPU-limited, moving farther toward Performance may not solve its slowest moments because reducing GPU image quality cannot make a busy game simulation run faster.

Lower demanding options inside the game when Optimize is not enough
NVIDIA’s performance guidance recommends reducing game settings when latency or performance remains high. Use the title’s own graphics menu after the NVIDIA App pass, and change the most demanding options first. Resolution and screen options are exposed in the Graphics panel; other choices vary by game and are displayed in that game’s menu.
- Lower the render workload. A lower resolution or less demanding display configuration can reduce the amount of work sent to the GPU, at the cost of sharpness.
- Reduce expensive visual effects. If the game identifies a quality option as demanding, lower it one step and retest rather than moving every control to its minimum immediately.
- Watch frame pacing, not only an average. A setting that raises an average frame rate but still produces severe pauses may not feel smoother.
- Stop when the trade-off is no longer worthwhile. The purpose of optimization is playable, consistent output, not the lowest possible slider position.
There is no single best position for every older or low-end system. Keep a note of the change that helped, so you can restore it after a game update or driver change.
Diagnose whether the CPU or GPU is the limit
Settings changes work best when they target the component that is actually limiting the game. NVIDIA’s latency guidance distinguishes game latency, which can become high when the CPU is limiting the game, from render latency, which can become high when the GPU is limiting rendering.

- Lowering resolution or visual quality produces little improvement in the slowest scenes.
- The game’s simulation, draw-call work, or background processing appears to be the limiting factor.
- Performance falls in crowded areas even when the image is not especially detailed.
For a CPU-limited title, reducing GPU quality may have only a small effect. Close unnecessary background work, use a sensible per-game profile, and accept that a faster CPU may be required for a substantial latency improvement.

Signs of a GPU render limit
- Reducing resolution or other visual quality options makes the game respond more consistently.
- Slowdowns occur in scenes with heavy lighting, geometry, effects, or high output resolution.
- The game becomes smoother after Optimize proposes less demanding rendering choices.
For a GPU-limited title, the Performance direction and carefully selected in-game reductions are more likely to help. Preserve the options that matter most to you and lower the rest incrementally.
NVIDIA’s guidance also makes the hardware boundary explicit: “At some point, the best way to get lower latency is to invest in faster hardware.” That is a limit of software tuning, not a requirement to purchase anything merely to use NVIDIA App.
Use Legacy Settings only for older games
For an older title, open Graphics > Driver Settings > Show Legacy Settings. NVIDIA lists older-driver controls such as anisotropic filtering, texture filtering, antialiasing variants, background application frame rate, and PhysX in this area.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Legacy option | Why you might inspect it | How to approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Anisotropic filtering | Can improve the appearance of textures viewed at an angle | Change it per game and check whether the visual improvement is worth the added work |
| Texture filtering | Controls how textures are sampled and displayed | Use the title’s behavior as the test; older engines can react differently |
| Antialiasing variants | Can reduce jagged edges | Try only when the game’s own antialiasing is missing or ineffective, because quality and performance costs vary |
| Background application frame rate | Can limit rendering while a game is not the active window | Useful when multitasking, but keep the change scoped to titles that behave correctly with it |
| PhysX | Provides a compatibility setting for games that use PhysX | Leave it alone unless the older title benefits from a specific selection and remains stable |
NVIDIA says these legacy controls can benefit older games but are not necessary or applicable for most modern games. Compatibility and visual effects vary by title, so do not apply a legacy value globally just because it helped one classic game.

“Many older games can be enhanced using NVIDIA Control Panel options, correcting a lack of anisotropic filtering, bolstering anti-aliasing, and adding more realistic ambient occlusion shading.”
The quote describes possibilities for older games, not a guaranteed result for every engine. If a title becomes unstable, shows missing effects, or looks worse, restore the previous per-game value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance versus image quality: make the trade-off explicit
Every optimization is an exchange. Moving toward Performance can make a game easier for constrained hardware to render, but may reduce detail, sharpness, or effects. Moving toward Quality preserves more visual information but can increase render work. Decide which compromise fits the game rather than treating “Performance” as automatically correct.
Recommended Free Tools
- Competitive or reaction-sensitive play: prioritize consistent frame delivery and input response, even if some effects are reduced.
- Story-driven or exploratory play: keep the visual settings that define the atmosphere, and lower less important options first.
- Very old games: inspect Legacy Settings only when the title needs them; modern games generally do not.
- Mixed libraries: keep separate profiles. A single global compromise rarely suits every engine and display.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
| What you observe | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Optimize proposes changes you do not want | The Performance-to-Quality position and the individual entries shown in Graphics | Move the slider toward your preferred balance, then accept only the listed changes that make sense for the game |
| The game is still slow | Whether the slowdown is GPU-render or CPU-side, and whether the test scene is genuinely demanding | Lower demanding in-game settings one at a time; if the CPU is limiting, expect software changes to have limited effect |
| The image is too soft or unattractive | Resolution and quality changes applied by Optimize | Restore the most visible setting and reduce a different demanding option, accepting that performance may fall |
| A legacy change causes odd behavior | Which value changed under Graphics > Driver Settings > Show Legacy Settings | Revert that per-game value and retest without other legacy controls |
| Other games now look different | Whether the change was made under Global Settings instead of the selected game | Undo the global change and recreate it only in the affected game profile |
| Results vary after an update | The current app layout, driver, and game settings | Recheck the Graphics panel and repeat the same controlled test; menu labels and supported functions can change between releases |
When a change makes no measurable or noticeable difference, restore it rather than stacking more adjustments. A clean baseline makes the next diagnosis possible.

Do not confuse Project G-Assist with NVIDIA App optimization
Project G-Assist is not a generic low-end-PC optimizer and its requirements are not NVIDIA App requirements. NVIDIA’s March 25, 2025 requirements for G-Assist specify the following:
| G-Assist requirement | Stated requirement |
|---|---|
| GPU | Desktop GeForce RTX 30, 40, or 50 Series with at least 12 GB of VRAM |
| CPU | A supported processor |
| Storage | 6.5 GB for System Assistant |
| Driver | GeForce driver 572.83 or later |
G-Assist also briefly uses GPU resources while handling a request. An older PC that can use NVIDIA App may not satisfy these G-Assist specifications. Do not infer NVIDIA App eligibility, minimum hardware, or legacy GPU support from this separate feature’s requirements; consult NVIDIA’s current support information for the release you have installed.
A repeatable checklist for each game
- Open NVIDIA App and select Graphics.
- Select one game and note its current configuration.
- Move Performance-to-Quality toward Performance only as far as your visual target permits.
- Choose Optimize and read every proposed change.
- Apply the changes to the game profile, not Global Settings, during diagnosis.
- Test the same demanding scene and judge smoothness, latency, and image quality.
- Lower demanding in-game options if the result is still inadequate.
- Decide whether the evidence points to a CPU limit or a GPU render limit.
- For an older title only, inspect Graphics > Driver Settings > Show Legacy Settings and change one option at a time.
- Restore any setting that causes instability, unwanted image changes, or no useful improvement.
The practical boundary of optimization
NVIDIA App is most useful as a controlled way to start tuning: it gathers system information, proposes game-specific changes, and lets you review their scope. Its recommendations cannot turn a CPU-limited game into a GPU-limited one, and they cannot guarantee a particular frame rate. The strongest results come from matching the setting to the actual bottleneck, keeping changes per game, and preserving a known-good configuration you can restore.
