Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMake a web application feel faster by measuring the complete request path first, then fixing the largest verified delay. Start with real-user Core Web Vitals and controlled lab traces; inspect DNS, redirects, round trips, origin work, cache behavior and transferred bytes; then change one variable and measure again. A CDN, compression or a newer protocol can help, but none is an automatic cure for slow uncached application work.
Start with evidence, not a CDN setting
Network optimization is a delivery problem between a browser, the network edge and your origin. The same page can be fast for a nearby desktop and slow for a mobile user far from the origin, so use both field and lab data.
Measure real users
Track Core Web Vitals by page, device class and user group. Google’s recommended “good” thresholds at the 75th percentile are:
| Metric | What it represents | Recommended good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | Loading performance | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP | Interaction responsiveness | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS | Visual stability | 0.1 or less |
Assess mobile and desktop separately. These are guidance thresholds, not a promise that every visitor will experience a fast page. Record time to first byte (TTFB), resource timing, transferred bytes, cache status and interaction outcomes alongside the vitals.

Use lab runs to reproduce causes
Run a consistent browser trace from representative locations and devices after each material change. Lab tools help isolate a redirect chain, a blocking stylesheet or a slow API call, but they cannot replace field data: device capability, radio conditions and user interaction vary in production.
Trace what TTFB actually contains
TTFB is not simply “server time.” It can include DNS lookup, network round trips, redirects and origin processing. Split the path before selecting a remedy:
- DNS: check lookup latency and whether resolvers repeatedly miss the cache.
- Redirects: remove unnecessary HTTP-to-HTTPS, host or locale hops from the critical navigation.
- Network distance: compare the user’s location with the edge and origin locations.
- Application work: profile routing, authentication, database calls, upstream APIs and template rendering.
- Response transfer: inspect status, content type, compression and bytes delivered after the first byte.
A CDN can reduce network latency for cacheable responses, but it does not make expensive uncached application work disappear. If the trace shows database or upstream delays, fix those paths or reduce the work before moving the response to an edge.
Use edge delivery and caching safely
When a CDN is a good fit
Consider a content delivery network when users are geographically distant from the origin or repeated requests for eligible resources consume origin capacity. Evaluate the actual geography of your users, cacheability, cache-key controls, purge or versioning workflow, hit-rate visibility, origin integration and total cost. A large advertised network is less useful than a correct cache response near your users.

Images, CSS and JavaScript are usually strong candidates for edge caching. Use immutable, versioned filenames such as app.8f31.js; when content changes, publish a new name rather than relying on emergency purges. Set a long lifetime only when the URL changes with the bytes.

Cloudflare documents static assets as cached by default in its setup and dynamic HTML as not cached by default. Those are Cloudflare defaults, not a universal rule for every CDN. Other providers expose different controls, so confirm the selected provider’s current documentation.
Keep personalized and sensitive responses out of shared caches
Cache rules are a correctness and security decision. Verify that cookies, authorization headers, query strings, language, device variation and other response differences are represented in the cache key. Do not cache a response containing private account data merely because it is slow. Check cache-control headers, vary behavior, purge permissions and observability before expanding HTML caching.
A cache hit ratio is meaningful only when the hit response is current and correct. Monitor hit and miss status by URL class, age and region; investigate unexpected misses instead of increasing TTL blindly.
Reduce the bytes that must cross the network
Remove work before compressing it
- Delete unused JavaScript, CSS, fonts and third-party requests.
- Serve images at the dimensions and quality the rendered layout needs.
- Lazy-load below-the-fold media where it does not delay the main content.
- Avoid sending desktop-only or locale-specific data to every client.
Compression cannot help bytes you never send. Measure each resource’s encoded and decoded size and prioritize the largest critical transfers.
Verify negotiation and response eligibility
For text-based responses, enable a supported compression method and inspect both sides of the edge. The browser’s Accept-Encoding, the response’s Content-Encoding, content type, status, minimum-size rules, plan and CDN configuration all affect delivery. Cloudflare documents Gzip, Brotli and Zstandard behavior subject to those conditions; do not assume another provider has the same plan limits or defaults.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check origin logs and CDN headers together. A compressed response at the origin may be recompressed, decompressed or bypassed at the edge. Confirm that errors, redirects and API responses are handled intentionally rather than applying a blanket rule.
Choose protocol and hosting changes by diagnosis
HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 can improve connection use, but changing protocol without removing distance, redirects or oversized resources may not improve the user’s result. Compare a controlled before-and-after measurement from the same locations. For hosting or CDN options, compare:
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| User geography | Are edge locations close to the users who are slow? |
| Cache behavior | Can you define keys, bypass private responses and invalidate safely? |
| Origin integration | Can it reach your origin securely and preserve required headers? |
| Observability | Can you see TTFB, hits, misses, status codes and regions? |
| Transfer handling | Are compression and content-type rules explicit and testable? |
| Operating cost | What do requests, egress, storage, purges and support add up to? |
A repeatable optimization workflow
- Baseline: capture field LCP, INP and CLS at the 75th percentile for mobile and desktop; record TTFB, bytes, cache status and key resource timings.
- Pick one slow path: use a trace to identify DNS, redirects, distance, origin work or transfer size as the dominant delay.
- Apply the smallest relevant change: remove a redirect, tune a query, move eligible content to the edge, correct a cache key or reduce a resource.
- Validate correctness: test anonymous, authenticated, cookie-bearing, localized and error responses where applicable.
- Re-measure: repeat the same lab conditions and watch field data long enough to see the change across real devices and regions.
- Compare cost and complexity: retain a change only when user outcomes improve without unacceptable invalidation, debugging or delivery cost.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The CDN made no difference”
Likely cause: the response is a cache miss, personalized, or dominated by origin processing. Fix: inspect cache-status headers and the origin trace; cache only a correct public response and optimize the uncached path.
“Users see old CSS or JavaScript”
Likely cause: a long-lived URL contains changed bytes. Fix: publish versioned filenames or use a deliberate purge process, then verify new and old URLs from multiple regions.
“Private data appeared in a cached response”
Likely cause: cookies, authorization or query variation was omitted from the cache decision. Fix: bypass shared caching for private responses, correct the cache key and purge affected objects immediately.

“Lab scores improved but field data did not”
Likely cause: the test location or device does not represent affected users, or interaction and rendering delays remain. Fix: segment real-user data by geography, device and connection, then trace the worst segment.
“TTFB is high only in one region”
Likely cause: physical distance, regional DNS behavior, an edge miss or a slow origin route. Fix: compare DNS, connect, TLS, waiting and transfer timings by region and verify the cache policy for that route.

For repeatable page captures while investigating delivery, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport settings, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, 100-URL bulk calls, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response headers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I optimize TTFB or Core Web Vitals first?
Use both: TTFB helps locate response-path delay, while LCP, INP and CLS show what users experience. Prioritize the measured bottleneck for the affected device and region.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is a higher CDN cache-hit ratio always better?
No. A hit is valuable only when the response is correct, current and safe for that request. Review cache keys, personalization and invalidation with the ratio.
Can compression fix a slow database query?
No. Compression reduces eligible transfer bytes after the response is produced; it does not remove origin computation or database latency.
