How to Optimize Images to Improve Website Performance

A practical workflow for reducing image bytes, choosing formats, serving responsive candidates, and fixing the image-related bottleneck that actually slows a page.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Optimize images by removing unnecessary ones, sizing each asset for its actual display, choosing a format that suits its content, and compressing it only as far as its quality allows. Then serve responsive variants and load them according to their role on the page. For the biggest gains, identify whether images are actually slowing the page: smaller files help when image transfer is the bottleneck, but they will not fix a late-discovered image or slow rendering.

Start with the page, not a format or compression setting

Work from the images visitors see and the sizes at which they see them. An image that is scaled down with CSS still transfers its original bytes, so a large source can waste bandwidth even when it looks small on screen. First ask whether the image is needed; if it is, determine its rendered dimensions and inspect its intrinsic pixel dimensions.

  1. Inventory prominent images. Check the hero, product images, cards, and other large visible assets. Compare their intrinsic dimensions with their rendered dimensions at common viewport widths.
  2. Generate appropriately sized candidates. Provide widths close to actual rendered use rather than sending the largest original to every device. Account for high-density screens, but avoid variants so large that they erase the bandwidth benefit.
  3. Reserve the layout space. Include accurate width and height attributes so the browser can allocate space before the image loads and reduce layout movement.

Google web.dev notes that serving desktop-sized images to mobile devices can use 2–4 times more data than needed. That is a conditional comparison, not a guaranteed saving on every page. Responsive candidates let the browser choose a suitable resource for the layout and device.

Use srcset and sizes for responsive widths

For the same image composed at different widths, use width-descriptor candidates in srcset and describe the image’s expected rendered width with sizes. The browser can use those hints alongside the viewport and device density to select a candidate.

Adjust sizes to match the real layout. If the image occupies half the viewport on desktop, for example, a rule claiming it is 800 pixels wide can lead to an unnecessarily large choice. Keep the fallback src and dimensions accurate to the asset and layout.

Use <picture> for format selection or art direction

Use <picture> when the browser needs format alternatives or a different composition at a breakpoint. Put preferred formats first and provide a broadly compatible fallback source. Art direction means serving a different crop or composition—not merely another resolution—when the design calls for it.

<picture>
  <source type="image/avif" srcset="/images/hero.avif">
  <source type="image/webp" srcset="/images/hero.webp">
  <img src="/images/hero.jpg" width="1600" height="900"
       alt="A view of the product dashboard">
</picture>

For responsive alternatives, each source can also have appropriate srcset and sizes values. Verify the fallback and alternatives with the browsers your audience uses.

Choose a format that fits the image

There is no universal best image format. Choose according to visual content, transparency or animation needs, fidelity, file size, and browser support. Compare candidates made from the same source at the size they will actually be displayed; converting an already optimized file can make it larger.

Image type or need Formats to consider What to check
Photographs and detailed raster images JPEG, lossy WebP, or AVIF Compare visual quality and bytes at the target dimensions. WebP is broadly supported across modern browsers according to web.dev; the cited image-performance guidance describes AVIF support as reasonably decent but not as broad, so check audience browser requirements and retain a fallback where needed.
Logos, diagrams, charts, and clean line art SVG Check that the asset is suitable as vector artwork and renders as intended at its display size.
Transparency, pixel accuracy, or crisp edges PNG or an appropriate lossless format Compare file size while preserving transparent areas, sharp boundaries, and exact pixels where those matter.
Long-form animation where playback controls are useful Video may be more suitable than an animated image Consider whether playback control and the intended viewing experience favor video.

Compress images, then inspect the result

Lossy compression discards image information to reduce bytes. It often works well for detailed photographs, but artifacts can become obvious around text, flat colors, and high-contrast edges. Lossless compression preserves image data while reducing encoding overhead, making it useful when fidelity or crisp edges matter.

  1. Choose representative images from the site, including photographs, graphics with text, and assets with sharp edges or transparency.
  2. Export candidate formats and quality settings at the intended output dimensions.
  3. Compare file size and inspect the images at their actual display size and, where relevant, at higher-density display scale.
  4. Reject settings that introduce visible artifacts or outputs that are larger than the original. Keep the original when a transformation makes the file worse.

Google web.dev recommends experimenting with compression levels until you find a good compromise between image quality and file size. Its guidance names Squoosh and ImageOptim as options; it does not establish one best tool or a setting that suits every asset.

Load images according to their importance

Lazy loading can defer images below the fold until they approach the viewport. Do not lazy-load an above-the-fold hero image when it is likely to be the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element: delaying its discovery or request can make the main content appear later.

<!-- Suitable for an image below the fold -->
<img src="/images/related-story.jpg" loading="lazy"
     width="800" height="533" alt="Related story">

For a prominent image, inspect when the browser discovers it and whether fetch priority or a preload hint would help. Use priority selectively; it competes with other page work, including scripts and fonts. Do not lazy-load or boost every image by default. Confirm that the chosen hint addresses a measured discovery or loading issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnose LCP before choosing a fix

LCP records when the largest image or text block in the viewport is rendered. Google web.dev guidance, last updated March 31, 2025, says a good LCP is 2.5 seconds or less for at least 75% of page visits. Treat that as a field-performance target, not a guarantee for an individual visit.

  • AI Object Removal with Object Detection - Clean up photos fast with AI that detects and removes distractions automatically.
  • AI Image Enhancer with Face Retouch - Clearer, sharper photos with AI denoising, deblurring, and face retouching.
  1. Use PageSpeed Insights, browser developer tools, or a performance trace to identify the LCP element and its resource.
  2. Separate the time spent discovering and requesting the resource from the time spent rendering it. Check whether the image is discovered late, takes a long time to transfer, or arrives promptly but is rendered late.
  3. Choose the corresponding fix: right-size and compress if image transfer is slow; improve markup or carefully adjust preload and priority if discovery is late; investigate rendering and competing page work if render delay dominates.
  4. Measure again after changes under comparable conditions. A smaller image can shorten resource loading without improving LCP when discovery or rendering is the larger delay.

Decide whether an image CDN fits your workflow

An image CDN can transform and deliver variants by dimensions, pixel density, format, and compression. It may reduce manual processing, but it is not automatically better than a build-time image pipeline. Compare setup and migration effort, cost, support, and documentation with the work the CDN would remove.

  • Check whether automatic transformations match the formats, dimensions, and quality controls the site needs.
  • Consider whether adding another origin introduces connection setup time or makes the LCP image harder for the browser to discover early.
  • Compare operating and migration costs with generating and serving variants during the build.
  • Evaluate the resulting page in performance tools rather than assuming that a CDN or format conversion will improve it.

The guidance cited here does not identify a provider as universally best or establish current provider pricing. Select a delivery workflow against your measured bottleneck and operational requirements.

Troubleshoot common image-performance problems

  • The image looks small but transfers a large file. The source may be much larger than its rendered use. Generate appropriately sized candidates and use responsive markup so a smaller candidate can be selected.
  • A converted image is larger than the original. Conversion does not guarantee a smaller file. Compare the result and retain the original if the candidate is larger or looks worse.
  • Text or edges look smeared after compression. Lossy artifacts are especially visible around sharp edges, flat colors, and text. Try a less aggressive setting or a lossless format where fidelity matters, then inspect again.
  • A mobile page still downloads a large image. Check the actual srcset candidates and whether sizes matches the rendered layout. Incorrect sizing hints can lead the browser to choose a larger resource than intended.
  • LCP remains slow after reducing image bytes. Recheck the LCP breakdown. Late resource discovery or render delay may be dominant; compression alone will not solve those bottlenecks.
  • The hero image appears late after adding lazy loading. Remove lazy loading from the above-the-fold LCP image. Check whether the browser discovers it early and whether a carefully chosen priority or preload hint is warranted.
  • A responsive or format fallback is missing. Verify that each alternative URL exists and that the <img> fallback is valid. Test the markup in the browsers and viewport sizes relevant to your audience.

Measure the result, not just the file size

Track image bytes alongside the page experience. For each prominent asset, record the rendered dimensions, selected resource, and file size; for LCP, inspect resource discovery, load duration, and render delay. Recheck representative pages and viewports after changes. An optimization is useful when it reduces unnecessary transfer or improves the measured loading path without unacceptable visual loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should every image on a page use the same format?

No. Select formats by the asset’s visual content, fidelity and transparency needs, file size, and audience browser support; compare actual outputs rather than converting everything uniformly.

Does a smaller image file always improve LCP?

No. It can reduce image resource loading time, but LCP may instead be constrained by late discovery or render delay.

Should I lazy-load the hero image?

Usually not when it is above the fold and likely to be the LCP element. Lazy loading is intended for images lower on the page that can wait until they approach the viewport.
