To make website images smaller without degrading them, start by matching each file’s dimensions to the largest size it will actually appear, then choose a format and compression method suited to its content. Create responsive image candidates where layouts need them, and compare the exported files at real display size before publishing. There is no single format or quality setting that works best for every image.
1. Start with the dimensions the page needs
An image that is much larger in pixel dimensions than its rendered size carries unnecessary data. First identify the largest layout slot the image must fill, then prepare an image at a suitable size rather than sending an oversized original to every visitor. CSS controls the image’s displayed layout size; responsive image markup gives the browser a choice of source files for that layout.
For example, a site might offer a smaller candidate for a narrow display and a larger one for a wider display. The exact pixel widths should follow the site’s layout and asset needs; there is no universal set of breakpoints or file dimensions that fits every site.
Use srcset and sizes for resolution choices
srcset lists alternate image candidates, while sizes describes the expected layout slot. With that information, the browser can select a candidate based on viewport and device conditions. MDN explains the responsive-image attributes and resolution switching in its responsive images guide.

sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 800px"
alt="A mountain landscape">
In this example, the browser has three width candidates and a description of the image’s expected slot. Adjust the candidate widths and the sizes expression to reflect your actual layout. A wrong sizes value can describe a slot inaccurately, so verify what the page really displays at relevant viewport widths.
Keep the layout responsive too
Responsive source selection does not replace responsive CSS. The image still needs to fit the layout; for a fluid image, a common rule is max-width: 100%; height: auto;. Check that the image neither overflows its container nor appears distorted, and confirm that the displayed dimensions match the intended design.
2. Choose a format for the image, not by habit
Format choice depends on the image’s content and requirements, including transparency, animation, sharp edges, text and browser support. JPEG is a familiar choice for photographs. WebP and AVIF can support lossy or lossless compression and may reduce file size. PNG can be useful when lossless output or precise reproduction matters. SVG suits vector artwork and can itself be minified or compressed. These are trade-offs, not a rule that one format always wins.
| Image or requirement | Formats to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Photographs with detailed tonal variation | JPEG, WebP or AVIF | Compare file size against visible quality at the intended display size; lossy compression may suit photographic detail. |
| Screenshots, diagrams, line art or exact-pixel needs | PNG or a lossless WebP/AVIF option | Look closely at text, flat colors and edges. Lossless output preserves image data. |
| Artwork requiring transparency | PNG, WebP or AVIF, depending on workflow and support | Confirm transparency is preserved and check browser support for your audience. |
| Vector logos and illustrations | SVG | Ensure the artwork is genuinely vector-based; minification or compression may reduce SVG transfer size. |
| Animated images | A format that supports the required animation in your delivery stack | Verify animation behavior and compatibility in the browsers your audience uses. |
This table is a selection framework rather than a guarantee about relative file sizes: the result varies with source material, encoding and settings. MDN’s image file type and format guide describes format characteristics; check current browser support for your target audience and stack before relying on a format.

Use <picture> when you need format alternatives or art direction
Use <picture> when you want to offer alternate formats or different image compositions for different conditions, and include a usable <img> fallback. The browser can select a supported source, while the fallback remains available when none of the offered sources applies.
<picture>
<source type="image/avif" srcset="/images/landscape.avif">
<source type="image/webp" srcset="/images/landscape.webp">
<img src="/images/landscape.jpg"
alt="A mountain landscape"
style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;">
</picture>
This simple example offers format alternatives for one composition. If you need art direction—such as a different crop on narrow screens—use media conditions and corresponding sources, while keeping the fallback meaningful. Do not add alternate sources unless you can create, serve and verify them.
3. Decide whether lossy compression is acceptable
Lossy compression reduces file size by discarding image information. It often suits photographs, where a carefully chosen export may look acceptable despite changed pixel data. Lossless compression preserves image data and can be a better fit for screenshots, diagrams, line art or cases where exact pixels matter. The appropriate choice depends on what a visitor must be able to see, not just the file extension.
- Consider lossy compression for photographic images where some data loss is acceptable and the result remains visually sound.
- Prefer lossless output when exact image data matters, or when small changes to text, flat colors or edges would be conspicuous.
- Inspect transparency and animation after export if the asset relies on either.
Do not treat “lossless” as a guarantee that every format conversion or workflow preserves the original appearance: the key is to understand what the chosen conversion and settings do, then inspect its output. The web.dev Image performance learning resource notes that “When compressing, there isn’t a universal setting suitable for all cases.”

4. Compare exports visually and by file size
Compression quality numbers are not directly interchangeable across formats or workflows, and a single setting cannot be assumed to suit every asset. Export representative images at several settings, compare their file sizes, and inspect the results both at their actual page size and enlarged. Keep the smallest file that still meets your visual standard.
- Choose representative assets. Include the kinds of images your site actually uses, such as photographs, screenshots, diagrams or illustrations.
- Export alternatives. Test the relevant formats and multiple compression settings for those assets.
- Compare bytes and appearance. Record the file sizes and inspect each version at its expected rendered size.
- Inspect details at enlarged scale. Check text, thin lines, sharp edges, flat-color boundaries and transparency for visible artifacts.
- Choose per asset type. Retain the smallest result that clears your quality threshold rather than forcing one setting across the whole library.
There is no generally applicable percentage reduction to promise: savings depend on source material, dimensions, format and quality choice. web.dev’s responsive images article covers the broader workflow of selecting and optimizing responsive images.
5. Make the workflow repeatable
For a small site, a manual export-and-check process may be enough. For a large image library, command-line or GUI tools and optimization services can automate processing. Automation can save repetitive work, but the value depends on the number of assets, integration with publishing, output quality, processing limits, privacy and workflow requirements, and total cost. No particular vendor or service is established here as the best choice.
Whichever workflow you use, preserve an original where practical, define output variants that match real layout needs, and test a representative batch before applying settings across a library. Recheck the rendered results in the page, because a smaller file is not an improvement if the image is visibly damaged or the wrong candidate is served.

6. Troubleshoot common image-optimization problems
The file is still large after compression
Check the pixel dimensions first. If the asset is far larger than its largest rendered slot, prepare an appropriately sized source. Then compare an alternative format or compression approach for that kind of image; changing a quality setting alone may not address oversized dimensions.
The image looks blurry on a high-density screen
Check whether the available candidates include a suitable larger-resolution source and whether srcset lists it correctly. Also inspect the actual rendered size and the sizes description: the browser’s selection depends on the candidates and the layout-slot information you provide.
Text, edges or flat colors look damaged
Those details can reveal lossy artifacts. Compare a lossless export or a less aggressive lossy setting, then inspect the image at both page size and enlarged scale. Screenshots, diagrams and line art often warrant a different choice from photographs.
Transparency or animation disappeared
Verify that the selected output format and export workflow support the requirement, and that the transparency or animation survives conversion. Choose a compatible alternative if it does not, and confirm support in the browsers relevant to your audience.

A modern format does not display for some visitors
Check current browser support for your audience and the way the image is embedded. Offer alternate sources with <picture> and a usable <img> fallback when appropriate, then test the resulting page in the browsers you need to support.
A responsive image serves the wrong candidate
Confirm each file path and width descriptor in srcset, and make sizes describe the actual layout slot at the relevant viewport widths. CSS determines the displayed layout; the attributes help the browser choose among the supplied files.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to convert every image to AVIF or WebP?
No. Pick formats according to the image, required features and browser support for your audience; compare the actual exports.
Does a smaller image file always mean better optimization?
No. It must still look right at its rendered size and meet any requirements for detail, transparency or animation.
