How to optimize graphics settings for a fast-paced PC shooter

Optimize a fast-paced PC shooter with a measured loop rather than a copied “competitive” preset: record your current settings, lower the most demanding options a few at a time, test the same scene, and restore any setting whose visual benefit is worth its performance cost. Start with shadows, effects and particles, post-processing, environment or material detail, anti-aliasing, and textures. Keep native resolution when practical, verify the display’s highest refresh rate, and decide on V-Sync or latency features by testing your actual monitor and game.

What a good setup is trying to achieve

In a fast shooter, the useful target is not the highest average FPS at any visual cost. You are balancing four outcomes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Frame-rate capacity: enough rendering headroom for the busiest fights and effects.
  • Frame-time consistency: fewer sudden slowdowns or uneven frames while turning, aiming, or entering a crowded area.
  • Responsiveness: a short, predictable delay between mouse input and the image changing.
  • Clarity and smoothness: an image you can read quickly, without distracting blur, shimmering, or tearing.

These goals can conflict. A setting that makes the scene prettier may consume the headroom needed for a stable frame rate. A synchronization option can remove tearing while adding delay. A lower resolution can increase performance but makes image degradation easier to see. The best result is therefore specific to your game, graphics card, processor, monitor, and tolerance for visual compromises. Riot Games Support’s guidance, dated October 7, 2026, puts it plainly: “There’s no single perfect setup for every PC.” Riot Games Support

Set a baseline before changing anything

Do not change ten options and then try to guess what helped. A baseline makes every later decision reversible and gives you a fair comparison.

  1. Write down the current configuration. Record resolution, display mode, refresh-rate selection, V-Sync state, frame-rate limit if the game exposes one, and each quality option. A screenshot of every graphics menu is sufficient.
  2. Choose a repeatable test. Use the same map, training area, replay, or game mode. Reproduce a short route that includes ordinary movement, aiming, and the busiest effects you regularly encounter. Testing a different scene after every change makes the results unreliable.
  3. Note what you actually feel. Record whether the image tears, whether mouse movement feels delayed, and whether the frame rate drops during fights. Average FPS alone does not establish lower input latency.
  4. Change only a small group of related options. Riot recommends lowering a few settings at a time, testing again, and gradually turning settings back up. Its optimization guide does not claim a universal FPS gain for any individual option.

Keep a simple change log: setting, old value, new value, test result, and whether the image still looks acceptable. If an update resets the game, you can restore the last known-good combination instead of starting over.

Lower the settings that are sensible first candidates

Menu names vary. “Environment,” “world detail,” and “material quality” may describe similar controls in different games, while one game may combine effects and post-processing into a single slider. Match the function, not the exact label. The following order is a practical starting point supported by Riot’s list of demanding options; it is not a cross-game benchmark ranking.

1. Shadows

Reduce shadow quality or shadow distance first when available. Keep a level at which character silhouettes and cover remain readable, then test the same route. If the lower setting removes useful depth cues or makes indoor spaces confusing, restore it and reduce another option instead. Make this an individual decision: the cited guidance identifies shadows as a candidate to lower, not a guaranteed winner on every engine.

2. Effects, particles, and post-processing

Explosions, smoke, sparks, bloom, depth-of-field-style effects, and other post-processing can become especially expensive during a firefight. Lower these controls together only for the first pass, then test them separately if the result is promising. Preserve effects that communicate an enemy ability or projectile clearly; a small visual gain is not useful if important combat information disappears.

3. Environment, detail, or material quality

Look for controls named environment quality, object detail, geometry detail, world quality, or material quality. Reduce one step and repeat the route. Inspect medium-distance cover, weapon models, and surfaces you use for target identification. If a lower value makes objects appear too late or surfaces difficult to distinguish, return it to the previous value and continue with another category.

  • Warranty: A 30-day money-back and free replacement warranty from order date and lifetime technical support.

4. Anti-aliasing and image-enhancement effects

Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges, while sharpening or other image-enhancement controls alter perceived clarity. Lower anti-aliasing one level at a time and check thin geometry, fences, weapon sights, and distant player outlines. A setting that raises FPS but introduces distracting shimmer can be a poor competitive trade. Treat the game’s anti-aliasing and enhancement controls as a pair: the clearest combination at your target performance is more valuable than the lowest individual setting.

5. Texture quality

Textures affect surface detail and can be one of the most visible quality reductions. Lower them only as far as necessary, then inspect weapons, walls, and map landmarks at normal engagement distances. If the game offers several texture levels, compare adjacent values in the same scene rather than jumping straight to the minimum. Riot lists textures among the options to investigate when performance is inadequate, but does not provide a universal setting level or expected FPS increase. Riot Games Support

Use a controlled tuning loop

Once you have selected a candidate setting, use the same cycle for every change:

  1. Lower one small group. For example, reduce shadows and effects by one step, not every slider at once.
  2. Restart the same test route. Include the action that previously caused a slowdown.
  3. Check performance and feel. Look for smoother heavy fights, not just a higher number in a quiet area. Move the mouse rapidly, track a target, and watch for tearing or delayed response.
  4. Inspect image costs. Check outlines, smoke, distant cover, textures, and the visibility of combat effects.
  5. Keep, refine, or revert. Keep the change if it improves the target without an unacceptable visual loss. If it helps only slightly, try the next setting. If it hurts clarity, restore it immediately.

After finding a low setting that helps, raise it one step and test again. This “restore until the benefit is no longer worth the cost” approach gives you a personalized ceiling instead of an unnecessarily blurry image.

Resolution and display mode: larger gains, more visible compromises

Keep native resolution when possible

Lowering resolution reduces rendering work, so it is a reasonable fallback when the quality settings above do not meet your target. It also produces the most noticeable image-quality loss in Riot’s guidance. Try the next lower resolution only after you have tested the individual quality groups, and compare player outlines, reticles, text, and distant geometry at normal viewing distance. Riot Games Support describes resolution reduction as a tradeoff rather than a universal competitive requirement.

Compare fullscreen with your current display mode

Where the game offers fullscreen, borderless, and windowed modes, test fullscreen against the mode you currently use. Riot notes that fullscreen may improve performance on some systems, but not all. Keep the mode that delivers the more consistent result on your PC; do not assume the label alone guarantees lower latency or higher FPS. Record the mode with your baseline because changing it can alter the behavior you are trying to measure.

Choose V-Sync based on tearing versus latency

V-Sync synchronizes frame output with the monitor’s refresh cycle and can prevent visible tearing. The tradeoff is potential added input delay. NVIDIA’s system-latency guide recommends turning V-Sync off when the player accepts tearing, while Riot recommends testing both states with the actual game and display. NVIDIA’s guide and Riot’s guide therefore point to a test, not a one-size-fits-all answer.

  1. Run your repeatable route with V-Sync off. Note whether tearing is visible during fast horizontal movement and whether aiming feels immediate.
  2. Run the same route with V-Sync on. Note whether tearing disappears and whether mouse movement feels less immediate.
  3. Choose according to your priority and display. If tearing is unacceptable, the synchronized result may be preferable; if minimum delay matters more and tearing is tolerable, off may suit you better.

Do not infer input latency from average FPS alone. Compare the same scene, same frame-rate behavior, and the physical feel of rapid inputs.

Variable refresh rate and NVIDIA latency features

G-SYNC, V-Sync, and Reflex

For supported hardware and games, NVIDIA describes a G-SYNC plus V-Sync plus Reflex configuration as a tear-free path that keeps latency low. The guide also says uncapped FPS with Reflex can produce slightly lower latency. Those are configuration choices for compatible systems, not universal requirements. Check that the game, GPU, and monitor expose the relevant options before planning around them.

Enable Reflex when the game supports it

NVIDIA’s official recommendation is: “If you play a game that supports NVIDIA Reflex, we highly recommend turning it on.” Reflex is a game-level feature, so its presence and controls vary by title. If Reflex is available, test its supported modes in the same route rather than assuming that a driver toggle will have the same effect. NVIDIA states that Reflex overrides the driver’s Ultra Low Latency setting when both are enabled; avoid treating both as separate additive boosts. NVIDIA’s system-latency guide

AMD Radeon latency and frame-rate controls

AMD documents three distinct features:

  • Radeon Anti-Lag dynamically adjusts frame timing to reduce the delay between input and displayed response in supported configurations.
  • Radeon Boost changes resolution in response to input in supported games, trading image detail for responsiveness during motion.
  • Radeon Chill regulates frame rate.

AMD notes that Radeon Chill does not interoperate with Anti-Lag and/or Boost in the referenced driver documentation. Availability depends on the game and system configuration, so do not enable every switch by default. Test one feature at a time, observe image clarity and responsiveness, and keep only a combination the game actually supports. AMD’s feature documentation

Confirm the monitor is using its fastest supported refresh rate

A high-refresh display cannot help if the operating system or game is set to a lower mode. Check the operating system’s display settings and the game’s display menu, then select the monitor’s maximum supported refresh rate when it is available and stable. NVIDIA states that a higher refresh rate reduces scanout latency. This is a hardware limitation to verify, not a claim that every player needs to buy a new monitor. NVIDIA’s system-latency guide

After changing the refresh rate, repeat your V-Sync and latency tests. Synchronization behavior is tied to the display’s refresh cycle, so a setting that felt acceptable at one refresh rate may feel different at another.

Compare options on four axes

Setting or feature What to test Main benefit Primary tradeoff
Shadows Busy fights and areas with cover Candidate for reducing rendering demand Less shadow detail or depth information
Effects, particles, post-processing Explosions, smoke, ability effects Candidate for reducing heavy-fight slowdowns Less visual detail or combat-effect visibility
Environment, detail, material quality Mid-distance cover and surfaces Candidate for reducing scene complexity Lower object or surface detail
Anti-aliasing and enhancement Thin edges, sights, distant outlines Candidate for reducing processing cost More jagged edges or shimmering
Textures Weapons, walls, landmarks Candidate for reducing demand when needed Less surface detail
Resolution Text, reticle, outlines, distant geometry Can reduce rendering work Most noticeable image-quality loss among these choices
V-Sync Fast pans and immediate mouse movements Can prevent tearing May add input delay
Fullscreen versus another mode Identical route and fight sequence May improve performance on some systems Result varies by system

Judge each candidate by frame-rate consistency, responsiveness, clarity, and tearing or smoothness on your display. The supplied vendor guides do not provide a common numerical benchmark across games and hardware, so a percentage improvement from one title should not be transferred to another.

Practical decision branches

If fights still stutter after the first pass

Return to the exact fight sequence and lower the next candidate group by one step. Test effects and post-processing separately from shadows, then examine environment or material detail. If those changes are already at an acceptable minimum, try resolution as the larger but more visible compromise. Keep the last setting that improves the heavy scene without making targets or important effects difficult to read.

If FPS is high but aiming feels delayed

Test V-Sync off and on, because synchronization can add latency even when the frame-rate number looks healthy. Confirm the monitor’s maximum refresh rate in both the operating system and game. If the game supports NVIDIA Reflex, test it; on AMD hardware, test a supported Anti-Lag configuration. Do not enable incompatible AMD features together, and do not assume a driver setting duplicates a game-integrated feature.

If the image is smooth but tears

First verify the refresh-rate selection. Then compare V-Sync states. If supported, test the G-SYNC, V-Sync, and Reflex combination NVIDIA describes for tear-free, low-latency operation. If your hardware or game does not expose those options, choose between visible tearing and possible synchronization delay according to your preference rather than copying another player’s setup.

If lowering settings makes targets harder to see

Restore the setting that removed useful visual information and lower a different category. Resolution and anti-aliasing changes can alter outlines and fine geometry more noticeably than a modest shadow reduction. Keep textures or material detail higher if those surfaces help you identify weapons, cover, or map landmarks, and accept a lower-cost setting elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lock in the result and retest after changes

When the configuration feels right, save screenshots or a written list of every value, including display mode, resolution, refresh rate, V-Sync, and latency features. Keep the test route and your observations with that record. After a game patch, graphics-driver update, monitor change, or operating-system display change, verify the values again and repeat a short version of the same route. Updates can alter available labels or reset selections; a recorded baseline makes it clear whether a new problem comes from the game, the display configuration, or a setting that reverted.

Revisit one setting at a time when your priorities change. A new monitor refresh rate may justify retesting synchronization, while a game update may make a previously expensive effect affordable. The goal is a stable, readable, responsive setup for the way you actually play—not the lowest possible slider values.
