To address information disclosed from motor vehicle records, check your state DMV’s current procedure: a listing on a people-search site alone does not show where its information came from or whether its disclosure was lawful.
First, distinguish a DMV record from a people-search listing
The federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) governs personal information contained in state motor vehicle records and information disclosed onward by recipients. The U.S. Department of Justice describes the law as generally restricting DMV disclosure while allowing specified permissible uses. A DMV may also adopt a procedure that lets individuals opt out of unrestricted disclosure. The Justice Department’s explanation of the DPPA is a general description of that framework, not a state-by-state guide.

A people-search site showing your name, address, or other details does not establish that the site got them from a DMV. Similar details can appear in multiple records and sources. An opt-out request is a practical way to seek removal or restricted use; it is not, by itself, proof of a DMV disclosure or a legal violation.

Choose the removal route that fits your goal

Start with the specific site listing
- Save the details. Record the site name, the URL of your listing, and the specific information shown. This gives you a clear target; it does not determine the listing’s source.
- Find the site’s own privacy or removal instructions. Look for links or help topics labeled “opt out,” “privacy,” or “remove my information.” Follow that site’s current directions rather than assuming another site’s steps will apply.
- Keep a record of your request. Note when you submitted it and any confirmation or status the site provides. Do not assume that removal from one page removes copies, other listings, or data held by other services.
If you live in California, submit a DROP request
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) lets eligible residents submit one request to more than 600 registered data brokers listed in the platform. The state began accepting consumer requests on January 1, 2026. DROP is a California service, not a nationwide request portal. See CalPrivacy’s official DROP consumer guidance.

- Open the official DROP platform from the CalPrivacy consumer guidance and verify that you meet the California residency requirement.
- Create your consumer profile and submit the request to participating registered brokers in the platform.
- Choose profile details thoughtfully. The platform’s terms explain that profile information is disclosed to brokers so they can process the request. Required verification information is distinct from additional profile details; accurate identifiers may help brokers match you, but provide only details you are comfortable submitting.
- Review each broker’s status. A request is not an instant removal, and the status can have different meanings for different brokers.
What DROP status labels mean
- Deleted: The broker matched you and deleted non-exempt personal information. This does not guarantee that information disappeared from every site or source.
- Exempted: The broker matched information but may retain it under a legal exemption.
- Opted-out: The broker did not make an exact match. The state says it still has the data but may not sell or share it.
- Record not found: The broker did not find the information or could not locate you using the identifiers provided.
- Pending: The broker has not processed the request yet.
What DROP does not remove
CalPrivacy says the request does not remove information you gave directly to a business with which you have a direct relationship, exempt data, or publicly available data. Its scope is the registered data brokers covered by the platform, not every website that publishes personal information. If a broker reports “Record not found,” consider whether accurate additional identifying details could help it match you before changing your profile.
Allow time for California broker processing
California brokers began processing DROP requests on August 1, 2026. Covered brokers must access the platform and process requests at least every 45 days, and CalPrivacy says a status update may take up to 90 days. These are processing and reporting timeframes, not a promise that every listing will be deleted within 90 days. Check the platform for your request’s status rather than treating silence as confirmation of removal.

For DMV-source disclosure, check your state agency
The DPPA allows a DMV to establish an opt-out from unrestricted disclosure, but the procedure depends on the state. Use your own state motor vehicle agency’s current website or contact channel to look for its privacy, personal-information disclosure, or DPPA instructions. Do not assume a California process applies elsewhere, or that opting out of future DMV disclosures will remove information already held by a people-search site. The Justice Department’s general DPPA explanation does not establish each state’s current forms or rules.

These routes address different parts of the problem: a site-specific request targets a known listing, California DROP sends a request to covered registered brokers, and a state DMV procedure concerns disclosure of motor vehicle records. If you are eligible for DROP and also find a listing on a site, using both the platform and the site’s own removal route may address separate records or copies. Keep track of responses and review whether the particular listing changes; no single route guarantees removal from every source.
