You can ask each people-search site to suppress a profile that displays your political donations, but you cannot use that request to erase the original campaign-finance filing. People-search services assemble reports from data brokers, public records and other sources, then sell or display those reports. Opting out is therefore a site-by-site privacy request, not a deletion of the government record.
The practical approach is to find every matching profile, complete each service’s opt-out process, document what you submitted and check again periodically. Listings can return when public records change, and your information may still appear in another person’s report.

What you are actually removing
A people-search profile and a campaign-finance filing are two different records held by different organizations.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies people-search services as a type of data broker. Its materials describe political contribution records as one category of public record that brokers can compile. The FEC, meanwhile, makes federal campaign-finance reports available for public review and inspection. Suppressing a broker’s copy does not change the filing that the FEC received.

Why political donations appear in people-search reports
Federal campaign-finance disclosures are intended to provide transparency. The FEC says it makes a wide range of federal campaign-finance reports and other documents available for public inspection. A broker can copy information from those records and combine it with names, addresses, telephone numbers, relatives, age ranges, property details or social-media information to create a searchable identity report.
A donation entry may therefore be visible in two places at once: the official filing and a commercial profile that copied or inferred information from it. The commercial profile can be suppressed; the official filing remains public. This distinction is why promises to “remove your political donation from the internet” or “permanently delete your public record” are too broad.
Before you start: gather the details that distinguish you
Searches based only on a common name can produce false matches. Prepare a small set of identifiers so you can confirm that a result is actually yours without sending unnecessary information to a site.

- Your full name, including middle name or initial and common spelling variations.
- Current and former cities or states where you have lived.
- One or more telephone numbers and addresses that may be associated with older records.
- Age range or approximate birth year, if a site displays it as a matching clue.
- Names of relatives or associates shown in a result, used only to verify the match.
Do not upload an identity document or provide a full Social Security number unless the service’s process genuinely requires it and you have reviewed its privacy policy. The FTC warns that identity verification can require personal information. Before submitting, check what the service asks for, why it says the information is needed and how it says it will use or retain it.
Step-by-step: submit your own opt-out requests
1. Find profiles on several people-search sites
Use a search engine to look for your name with a city, state, telephone number or address. Open results that appear to be people-search or data-broker reports and compare the identifying details. Record the exact profile URL, the name displayed and any other clue that confirms the match.
The FTC recommends searching for a site’s name together with the phrases “opt out” or “remove my information.” Those searches often locate a service’s removal instructions faster than navigating its homepage. Repeat the search with spelling variations and older locations because one site may have more than one profile for the same person.

2. Locate the site’s removal instructions
Look for labels such as “opt out,” “remove my information,” “privacy choices,” “do not sell or share,” or “privacy request.” Read the instructions before entering data. Some sites require you to paste the profile URL; others ask you to search for yourself inside a dedicated opt-out form.

A search result can lead to an advertisement, a mirror site or a third-party request service rather than the broker that controls the profile.
3. Match the correct record
Enter only enough information to identify your listing. Compare the city, age range, relatives, phone number or address shown in the result. If several people share your name, do not claim every matching profile. An incorrect request could affect another person’s record while leaving yours visible.
4. Submit the request and complete verification
Follow the site’s exact confirmation steps. A service may send an email link, text code or other verification request. Keep the confirmation message, request number and date. If the site asks for additional personal information, decide whether the privacy benefit justifies providing it and review the stated retention policy first.
5. Keep a private tracking log
Use a spreadsheet or secure note with columns for the site, profile URL, identifying details used, submission date, confirmation number and follow-up date. Store the log somewhere separate from a public social-media account. This prevents duplicate work and gives you evidence of what you requested if a listing returns.
6. Repeat the process across other services
One opt-out applies only to the service that accepted it. Search for other people-search sites and repeat the same process. Some sites obtain data from the same underlying broker, but a removal on one service does not prove that another service has removed its copy.

7. Check the result and revisit it
After the service’s stated processing period, search again using the same name and location combinations. If the profile is still visible, verify that you used the correct form and completed any email confirmation. Submit a follow-up request or contact the service through the privacy channel listed in its instructions.
What happens after an opt-out
The FTC’s July 2022 consumer guidance states: “After you opt out, the people search site will stop selling your existing information.” The important qualifier is existing. An opt-out controls the information held or displayed by that service under its process; it is not a command to every data broker or government office.
Public records can change. A newly filed report, an updated address or a fresh data feed can cause a service to create or repopulate a listing. A person can also remain visible in a relative’s, neighbor’s or associate’s report even when an individual profile has been suppressed. For those reasons, treat opt-out as an ongoing maintenance task rather than a one-time erasure.

No universal recheck interval is established for all people-search sites. A practical schedule is to review your tracking log periodically and after a major change such as moving, changing a telephone number or making a new disclosed contribution. Search for both your current details and older ones that a broker may retain.
When a result reappears, save a screenshot or profile URL, note the date and submit a new request. Do not assume that a previous confirmation permanently covers future records; ask the service whether its policy applies to later versions of the same profile.
DIY requests versus a paid removal service
The FTC describes two basic routes: submit requests yourself for free, one site at a time, or pay a service to submit requests on your behalf. A paid service can save time, but its value depends on the work it actually performs. No provider’s current coverage, price or success rate should be assumed without checking its present terms.

Before paying, ask for a current list of covered sites, an example of the completion report, the rescan frequency, cancellation terms and an explanation of how your verification data is protected. Be skeptical of guarantees of “complete” or “permanent” removal unless the provider defines exactly what those words mean.
The FEC rule about copied disclosure information
Keeping a filing public does not mean every use of copied filing data is unrestricted. The FEC states: “Any information copied from such reports or statements may not be sold or used by any person for the purpose of soliciting contributions or for commercial purposes, other than using the name and address of any political committee to solicit contributions from such committee.”
This is a restriction on certain uses of copied disclosure information. It is not a general right to hide, delete or seal the original filing. If you believe a service is using campaign-finance information in a way that conflicts with the applicable FEC rules, preserve the listing, the service’s terms and the date you observed it, then seek advice from the FEC or a qualified attorney.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming one request covers the entire internet
Problem: You remove one profile and expect every other broker to update automatically.
Correction: Maintain a list of services and submit separate requests. A broker may have copied the same source record independently.
Using only your current address
Problem: Older listings remain indexed under a previous city or telephone number.
Correction: Search current and former locations and record each matching profile before submitting requests.

Requesting removal of the wrong person
Problem: A common name leads you to claim another individual’s record.
Correction: Verify multiple identifiers and submit only when the details clearly match you.
Stopping after the confirmation email
Problem: The listing disappears temporarily or reappears after a public-record update.
Correction: Recheck periodically and keep the original confirmation so you can reference it in a new request.
Sending excessive identity data
Problem: You provide more sensitive information than the service needs to verify the request.
Correction: Read the privacy explanation, use the minimum requested details and avoid unnecessary identity documents.
Confusing suppression with deletion
Problem: You believe the FEC filing has been erased because a broker profile is hidden.
Correction: Remember that the government record and the broker listing are separate layers with separate custodians.

What is known—and what is not—about results
There is no current population-wide statistic establishing how many people-search sites list political donations, how often listings reappear or what percentage of opt-out requests succeed. The FTC’s 2014 data-broker report describes historical research involving nine brokers; it should not be treated as a current industry-wide rate or as a guarantee about any present provider.
Likewise, the FEC’s public-record guidance describes statutory posting windows—generally within 48 hours of receipt, or within 24 hours for electronically filed covered documents—but the page reviewed does not show a publication year. Those windows explain why filings can become publicly available quickly; they do not predict when a commercial broker will copy, update or suppress a listing.
A maintenance checklist
- Search your name with current and former cities, states, addresses and telephone numbers.
- Confirm that each result is your profile before requesting removal.
- Use the site’s own opt-out or privacy-request procedure.
- Complete every email, text or verification step required by that procedure.
- Record the service, profile URL, request date and confirmation information.
- Repeat the process for other people-search services.
- Review what personal information a paid service requests and how it uses that information.
- Recheck periodically and after major changes to your public records.
- Expect the official campaign-finance filing to remain publicly accessible.
Bottom line for hiding campaign contributions online
You can reduce exposure by suppressing your listing on each people-search service that displays it. The request affects that broker’s existing profile, not the FEC’s public filing, other brokers’ databases or reports about relatives and associates. Keep realistic expectations, document every request and plan to repeat the process when information returns.
