1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no universal opt-out switch. Each service sets its own controls, and some are limited by country or account status. Turn off the platform’s AI-training or data-sharing setting, submit an objection form when one exists, and reduce the public visibility of future posts. These steps usually limit future processing; they do not promise that a model already trained on your data will be retrained or erased.
Use the platform-specific instructions below, then record the date you checked them. Labels and locations can change after an app update.

What an AI opt-out can—and cannot—do
“Training AI” covers several different activities. A service might use a public post to build a foundation model, use your prompts to improve an assistant, send content to a partner for model training, or reuse an image in a separate generative feature. One setting may cover only one of those activities.

- Feature reuse: a post or image may be made available to an image, remix, search, recommendation, or other generative feature without being part of general model training.
- Public visibility: changing an audience from public to followers or friends reduces new exposure, but does not prove that copies already collected have disappeared.
- Model erasure: the controls below generally do not promise that an already trained model will be untrained. Treat an opt-out as a limit on future use unless the service expressly says otherwise.
Feedback is a special case. A thumbs-up or thumbs-down submission can create a separate data-use path from the normal chat or post setting. Always read the wording next to the control you are changing.

Platform-by-platform controls
| Service | Direct control | What the documented control covers | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT / OpenAI | Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone: Off; or Privacy Portal → Do not train on my content | Normal conversations and content used to improve model performance | Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. Feedback submitted with thumbs up/down may allow the entire associated conversation to be used. |
| Use the account setting for use of data and content to train generative-AI models | Member data and content covered by the setting; it also controls sharing with Microsoft for model-training activities | Availability and wording vary by country and account. A separate Data Processing Objection Form addresses certain non-content-generating models. | |
| Facebook and Instagram (Meta) | Use the current Privacy Center or privacy objection form shown in your account | Meta’s documented objection concerns public Facebook and Instagram data, including posts and comments, where the regional process is available | The cited public-data objection is for adults in the European Union. Audience restrictions reduce future exposure but do not remove previously collected data. |
| X and Grok | Privacy & Safety → disable the Grok data-sharing option | Personal data about interactions with, inputs to, and results from Grok used to train or fine-tune Grok | Feedback can be a separate path. Protected posts have an additional effect: X says they are not used to train Grok or xAI’s underlying models and are not surfaced in responses. |
ChatGPT and OpenAI
Turn off model improvement in settings
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile or account menu.
- Open Settings, then Data controls.
- Set Improve the model for everyone to Off.
- Close and reopen the settings panel and verify that the switch still shows Off. Check each account or workspace separately if you use more than one.
OpenAI also documents a Privacy Portal route labeled Do not train on my content. Use that route if the in-app setting is missing or if you want to submit the request through the portal. Keep a confirmation screen or case number if one is provided.
Use Temporary Chats for conversations you do not want used for improvement
OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while they remain temporary. Start a new temporary conversation before entering the sensitive material; changing a normal conversation afterward does not turn it into a temporary one.
Do not assume feedback is covered
OpenAI says that when you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve models even after you have opted out. If you do not want that conversation considered, avoid submitting either feedback control. If you already sent feedback, the normal model-improvement switch does not guarantee that the associated conversation is excluded.
Disable generative-AI training use
- Sign in to LinkedIn on the account you use for posting.
- Open your account’s Settings and look for the privacy or data-use control referring to using your data and content to train generative-AI models.
- Choose the opt-out state and save it if LinkedIn presents a separate Save button.
- Return to the page and confirm the setting remains disabled. Repeat on any additional account or organization profile where you publish.
LinkedIn’s wording and the availability of this setting depend on your country and account state. Its November 3, 2025 update says that, in designated regions, some member data and public posts may be used for content-generating AI, while private messages are excluded. The same setting controls sharing with Microsoft for model-training activities.

Use the separate Data Processing Objection Form when appropriate
The generative-AI switch is not the only objection route. LinkedIn’s Data Processing Objection Form addresses objections to using personal data and member content for certain non-content-generating models, including systems for personalization, security, trust, or anti-abuse work. Read the form’s regional eligibility and purpose before submitting it; an objection aimed at those systems is not automatically an objection to every AI feature.
Facebook and Instagram (Meta)
Check the Privacy Center or objection form in your account
- Open Facebook or Instagram and go to the current Privacy Center or privacy settings area.
- Look for a notice or form about public information being used to develop or improve generative AI.
- Read the eligibility statement, enter the requested account details, and submit the objection if the form is available to you.
- Save the confirmation and note the date. Check both Facebook and Instagram if you maintain separate accounts.
Meta’s April 14, 2025 announcement says adults in the European Union can object to public data being used for training, including public posts and comments. Do not present that form as a worldwide right: its availability is regional, and the exact options shown in an account can change.
Understand what Meta says was used
Meta has stated: “Publicly shared posts from Instagram and Facebook – including photos and text – were part of the data used to train the generative AI models underlying the features we announced at Connect.” That statement concerns publicly shared material. Restricting a post to friends, followers, or another smaller audience reduces future public exposure; it is not a promise that information previously collected has been removed from training data or a model.
Review feature-specific sharing controls
Training and feature reuse are separate questions. Look for settings that govern sharing, reuse, remixing, or the ability of other people to reference your images, audio, prompts, or posts in generative features. The Associated Press reported in 2026 that Meta discontinued its Muse Image feature after criticism that public Instagram photos could be referenced for AI-generated images. The episode is a reminder to check both the general training objection and any separate generative-feature controls displayed in your app.

X and Grok
Disable Grok data sharing
- Open X and go to Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy & Safety.
- Open the section for Grok or data sharing with Grok.
- Turn off the option that permits your data to be used for training or fine-tuning Grok, then confirm the change if prompted.
- Reopen the page to verify the switch is still off after the app refreshes.
X says that opting out means personal data about your interactions with, inputs to, and results from Grok will not be used to train or fine-tune Grok. You can still use Grok on X after opting out.
Consider protecting the account when public visibility is the concern
X says that making an account private prevents posts from being visible to everyone and prevents those posts from being used to train Grok and xAI’s underlying AI models or surfaced in response to user queries. To protect the account, open Settings and privacy → Privacy & Safety → Audience, media and tagging, then enable the option that protects your posts. Review pending follower requests and remove people who should no longer see the account.
Private-account protection applies to posts that are protected under X’s rules; it does not automatically withdraw information you deliberately submitted elsewhere. X also warns that voluntarily submitting feedback can create a separate data-use path, so do not assume the Grok switch covers feedback you choose to send.
Does making an account private or deleting a post undo AI training?
Usually, no. Privacy changes govern what can be collected or viewed in the future. A public post may already have been copied, indexed, included in a dataset, or used in a model-training run before you changed its audience. Deleting the original post can remove it from the platform’s current interface, but the policies described above do not promise that every copy or trained representation is removed.

Use privacy changes anyway: they reduce the chance of new collection and limit who can access future posts. For high-risk material, combine an audience change or deletion with the service’s formal objection process rather than relying on only one action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regional and account eligibility checks
Location is decisive for some controls. The Meta public-data objection described above is for adults in the European Union. LinkedIn identifies designated regions and the United Kingdom for its stated rollout, and its form may not appear for every member. A missing control can therefore mean that your account is outside the eligible region, that the feature has not reached your account, or that the platform has moved the setting.
- Check the account’s country and age information if the service uses them to determine eligibility.
- Use the platform’s current Privacy Center or Help page rather than an old screenshot.
- Read whether the control covers public posts, private messages, prompts, feedback, or only a particular generative feature.
- Record the date, account, setting name, and confirmation shown after submission.
A practical opt-out checklist
- Inventory your accounts: list each profile, page, workspace, and assistant account where you publish or submit prompts.
- Find the AI control: search the current settings for “train,” “improve,” “generative AI,” “data sharing,” “Grok,” or “privacy objection.”
- Submit the formal objection: use a portal or form when the service offers one, and verify regional eligibility first.
- Reduce future exposure: change public posts to a restricted audience, protect the account, or disable reuse and remix features where available.
- Separate feedback from normal use: avoid thumbs-up/down or voluntary feedback on content you do not want reviewed for model improvement.
- Recheck after updates: app redesigns can move or rename controls. Confirm the state again after major updates or account changes.
Common failure modes and fixes
The setting is not visible
Check whether you are signed into the correct account, update the app, and try the web settings page. If the control still does not appear, review the service’s regional eligibility notice; do not assume that a form shown in another country applies to you.

Best Value
You opted out but still see AI features
An opt-out normally limits a data-use purpose; it does not necessarily remove the assistant, search feature, recommendation system, or generative tool from the app. Look for a separate control governing reuse or sharing in that feature.
You already submitted feedback
Review the service’s feedback policy. OpenAI specifically says a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can make the entire associated conversation eligible for improvement use even after opting out. Other services may describe their own feedback treatment separately.
What to expect after opting out
The realistic outcome is narrower future use, not a guarantee of historical deletion. A platform may stop sending new eligible content to a training pipeline, exclude future interactions, or prevent protected posts from being surfaced. None of those outcomes necessarily changes a model that was trained earlier.
For sensitive material, the safest approach is preventative: avoid posting it publicly, use temporary or private modes where offered, disable training before submitting prompts, and do not send optional feedback. Keep a dated record of each setting so you can identify what changed if the platform revises its policy.
