Change the relevant setting separately in each account, and check the service’s exceptions: an opt-out usually controls future training use, not chat deletion, safety processing, or data already used to train a model.
Where to turn off training for each service
The controls below apply to the consumer services and account types described. Product labels and menus can change, so if a path looks different, use that provider’s current privacy or data-control guidance. Workplace and business accounts may follow different terms or administrator settings.

ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI also offers a Privacy Portal option labeled “do not train on my content.” Chat history can remain visible after you switch off training, so use the history controls separately if you want to delete conversations. If you use Codex, inspect its separate “Include environments” setting: it controls training on full environments.
Claude
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. If you submit feedback or report a bug, read the notice shown with that action; submitted material may be treated differently from ordinary chats. Team and Enterprise administrators can control feedback submission, and commercial offerings have separate terms.

Gemini Apps
Google says chats made with Keep Activity off are retained for 72 hours to respond, process feedback, and protect the service, its users, and the public. Some Connected Apps features may be unavailable with the setting off. Google also says copies already reviewed by service providers are disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years; deleting activity does not delete those copies.
Connected-app data needs particular attention. With Keep Activity on, Gemini activity can include connected-app data and may be used to improve services, including training. Disconnecting an app or deleting its source data does not erase Gemini Apps Activity. Google says it may use summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences from connected-app interactions for training, with privacy-preserving steps and exceptions for addressing abuse or harm.

Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft’s directions vary across Copilot on the web, Edge Sidebar, and app versions. Its support material describes an updated app rollout dated August 18, 2026; consult the current instructions for the specific version and device you use. Do not assume this consumer control covers Microsoft 365 business data or every feature branded Copilot.
Grok on X
X says you can continue using Grok after opting out. Review the live setting’s wording to understand its scope, especially because it refers not only to your Grok interactions, inputs, and results but also to public data.

What an opt-out does—and does not—change
Think of training, stored history, and service operations as separate things. A training control is generally a forward-looking choice about using covered data to improve models. It is not automatically a command to erase chat history, delete all retained copies, or remove information already incorporated into a trained model. The provider guidance described here does not establish a general promise of “untraining” or complete removal of previously used data.
- Training use: The controls above describe how the providers handle future activity within their stated scope.
- Chat or activity history: Review the provider’s history or activity controls separately if you want saved records deleted.
- Feedback and safety: Feedback you submit may be handled differently from ordinary conversations. Some data may also be processed for service operation or safety.
- Removal or correction: If you need a data deletion or correction request, use the provider’s relevant privacy or account controls and read any retention exceptions. Do not assume an opt-out makes such a request for you.
Check the account and content you use
Before relying on a setting, confirm that it applies to the account and product where you enter data. Consumer services, workplace accounts, and business offerings can have different terms; an organization administrator may control some settings. Also consider what you send: prompts, uploads, public posts, voice inputs, connected-app content, and feedback may not all receive identical treatment. The provider’s live control and privacy notice are the best guide to the coverage of your specific product.

If your service is not listed
Look in that provider’s privacy, data controls, or AI activity settings for a training or model-improvement option. Verify the account type and product, whether the choice applies to future inputs, and whether feedback, connected services, or safety review are exceptions. No current official Meta AI opt-out route or regional differences are established here, so check Meta’s own current privacy controls rather than relying on an assumed path.
