The right control depends on where your content is: conversations in an AI service, posts on a social platform, or pages on a website you publish. This guide, current as of October 4, 2026, explains the documented controls for OpenAI, Google, X/Grok, Meta, and YouTube—and what each one does not cover.

These controls are service-specific, not a legal determination of what rights apply to your content. Their availability and effect can depend on account type, location, and the provider’s current policies.

Stop ChatGPT or Codex conversations from being used for model improvement
- For a personal ChatGPT account: Open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI also documents an alternative through its Privacy Portal: choose Do not train on my content. OpenAI says either option is sufficient for ChatGPT conversations and Codex tasks.
- Check the separate Codex environment control: If you use Codex and want to control sharing of full environments, review its Include environments setting separately. The conversation control does not replace that setting.
- Consider account type: OpenAI says inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, API, and Academic Researchers workspaces are not used for model improvement by default. API organization owners can enable data sharing, so an organization administrator should check the applicable setting.
OpenAI describes the personal-service opt-out as applying to new conversations. It also says feedback you voluntarily submit—such as a thumbs-up or thumbs-down—may allow the associated conversation to be used for training despite the opt-out. The documentation does not establish that switching the setting removes previously collected material or reverses training already performed.

If you publish a site, Google documents Google-Extended as a product token for robots.txt. It is not a separate crawler or HTTP user agent: Google says it uses existing Google user-agent strings to crawl, while the token communicates this control. For example, a site publisher can place the following directive in the site’s robots.txt file to disallow Google-Extended from the whole site:

Use narrower path rules instead if you intend to limit only parts of the site, and validate the live file against Google’s crawler documentation. Google says this token can control use of Google-crawled site content to train future generations of Gemini models and for certain Gemini grounding uses. It explicitly states: “Google-Extended does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search.”
This is not a blanket block on Google AI use. Google says Search AI features use Googlebot access controls; controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex govern how page content appears in Search AI features. Those controls differ in effect, so choose them based on whether you want to restrict crawling, snippets, indexing, or a particular Gemini use. Google warns that recrawling and processing a change can take from several days to several months. See its AI features and your website guidance for the Search-specific details.

Turn off X’s documented Grok training and fine-tuning option
- On X, open Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators → Data Sharing.
- Turn off the option that allows public data and Grok interactions to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says the opt-out leaves Grok usable and applies to model creation and fine-tuning. Its Grok help page also describes limits: feedback submitted on conversations may still be used, and the setting does not prevent a deployed Grok-powered feature from learning through normal use. Making your account private is an additional way X describes to limit access to your posts; it is not the same setting as the training opt-out.

Meta’s Newsroom explanation says public Instagram and Facebook posts, including photos and text, were used for the generative-AI models discussed in that 2023 post. Meta said those models were not trained on private posts, and that private messages with friends and family were not used unless someone in the chat chose to share them with Meta AI.

That explanation does not establish one opt-out process available to every user, account, or country today. Check the current Privacy Center and the options shown for your account and region; do not assume a setting described for one place or account applies everywhere.
YouTube AI activity controls are not a creator-video opt-out
YouTube’s privacy notice addresses prompts, outputs, material shared with YouTube AI features, related content, and feedback. It says YouTube AI Feature Activity is on by default and describes reviewing and deleting activity through Google Account tools, subject to service-specific storage periods. Those controls concern AI-feature activity; they do not establish a general creator opt-out from training on published YouTube videos.

The same notice says recordings of a face and voice used for YouTube avatars are not used to train Google’s generative-AI models, except to address abuse or harm. That specific statement should not be generalized to other YouTube content or AI features.

What opting out does—and does not—mean
An opt-out is not automatically a request to delete data, and it is not proof that material already collected has been removed from a dataset or a model. The official sources described above do not establish a cross-provider promise to undo prior training. They also cover different material: new chats, feedback, public posts, website pages, or activity within a particular AI feature. Read the provider’s stated scope before treating a control as effective for a different kind of content.
